ADC candidate eased out of debate

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Sunday opposed the easing out of its candidate, Prince Dapo Adelegan, from a debate meant for candidates of parties participating in Saturday’s governorship election.

The candidates present at the first leg of the debate organised by Face the Voter Initiative were Babatunde Ali of People Redemption Party, Aminu Olanrewaju of Allied Peoples Movement, Dotun Ojon of Young People’s Party and Martins Olagbegi of Action Democratic Party.

Adelegan was scheduled to attend the second leg, but received a letter from the organisers that he could no longer be accommodated due to constraint of space and logistics.

Speaking through the Deputy Director General of his campaign organisation, Pastor Ajibola Ogunmakinwa, Adelegan said thousands of the party’s supporters would be disappointed at the action of the organisers.

He said the party’s supporters would be denied opportunity to see how their preferred candidate would fare.

Also, the Concerned ADC Supporters described the decision to bar Adelegan as unfortunate and bizarre.

The ADC supporters, in a protest letter signed by Mr. Jimi Ajibola, said the reason given by the organisers was incomprehensible, if not completely flimsy.

Ajibola said it was a deliberate attempt to deny the people of Ondo State opportunity to make a choice, adding that  elections were about making choices.

He said: “It could also be out of fear of our candidate and the need to protect some preferred candidates from facing the real challenge that can be offered by our candidate.

“Prince Adelegan is a tested and trusted technocrat well equipped with what it takes to move a state like Ondo forward after years of stagnation.

“It should be stated that the rigging of an election is not just limited to the cooking up of figures and the stealing of ballot boxes. Lack of transparency in the process and absence of democratisation of the space also constitute an integral part of thwarting a free and fair election.

“Shutting out a credible candidate on the grounds of space constraints and logistics, when the earlier round of debates had accommodated an even larger number of participants, is nothing but an afterthought.”

16 PDP governors to campaign for Jegede

    By Gbade Ogunwale, Abuja

Sixteen governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will on Wednesday be in Akure for the party’s candidate Eyitayo Jegede’s campaign.

The governors, in a statement on Sunday by the Director General of the PDP Governors Forum, Cyril Maduabum, said the visit is the grand finale of the PDP governorship campaign ahead of Saturday’s election.

Saying they are united for Jegede, the governors repudiated a report in Sunday’s edition of a national newspaper (not The Nation), purporting that the PDP governors were divided over the candidate.

They described the report as tendentious, malicious, prejudicial, biased, conjured, procured, inciting and false.

The statement said: “For the avoidance of doubt, the PDP Governors’ Forum is united, strong and primed to do its utmost to elect our candidate in the Ondo governorship election, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, who has the experience, dynamism and programme of action to return Ondo State to its glory days.

“We think the story is the handiwork of fifth columnists, who are afraid of the popularity of the

“Nothing can stop the march of progress in Ondo. Indeed, Jegede’s victory is one whose time has come.”

The governors said they speak with one voice, adding that attempts by anyone to sow division and discord within their ranks have failed miserably.

“As a matter of fact, the PDP governors rose from a virtual meeting a few days ago with a resolve and commitment to make sure that all hands are on deck to support and deliver the PDP candidate.

“They are aware of the importance of the Ondo election to the image, solidarity and fortunes of the PDP.”

Guns boom in Akure as PDP, APC supporters clash

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

There was heavy shooting on Sunday morning on Oba Adeshida road in Akure, the Ondo State capital, as supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) clashed.

The fight was said to have been a reprisal over the killing of an APC member at Oba Nla, Akure, on Saturday night.

Several persons were said to have been injured, while many vehicles were vandalised.

As at the time of this report, the fight had spread to Erakhale.

Motorists had stopped plying the Oba Adeshida road at press time.

The police command has said nobody died in the clash.

It said one person, who was in injured, is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Spokesman Tee-Leo Ikoro told reporters that policemen had been drafted to the area.

He said some party supporters were raising unnecessary tension.

Traders and passersby fled for safety at Oba Nla along Oba Adeshida road as PDP and APC supporters exchanged gunfire.

More policemen were sighted at the area as traders at Oba Oja market displayed their goods.

The Governor Akeredolu Campaign Organisation in a statement by its spokesman Richard Olatunde alleged that the recourse to attack, thuggery and violence by the PDP was the height of insensitivity, irresponsibility and indecency and was obviously provocative.

He alleged that PDP thugs attacked anyone seen with APC branded items such as clothes and caps, as well as taxi drivers with Akeredolu stickers at Obanle.

He said the violence continued yesterday, with APC supporters beaten, clubbed and attacked with machetes for supporting the party.

Olatunde said: “We note that Oba-nla junction is the political base of some PDP chieftains like the lawmaker representing Akure South/Akure North Federal Constituency, Adedayo Omolafe, popularly called Expensive. Therefore, the source of this latest wave of thuggery and violence should not be far-fetched.

“The popularity of the APC candidate, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, has become a source of worry to the PDP. But rather than seeking legitimate means to shore up support, the party is bent on decimating the overwhelming and massive support APC is enjoying across the state, ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

“It is unfortunate that the PDP continues to move on this path of perdition despite appeals. Our appeal to security agents is to stop the party from turning our dear state into a theatre of war in the name of election.

But the Eyitayo Jegede Campaign Organisation, through its spokesman, Gbenga Akinmoyo, said PDP supporters were attacked in their homes with guns.

He alleged that Jegede’s Opomulero office in Akure was attacked by APC thugs, who shot PDP supporters, injuring some, who have been hospitalised.

According to him, “we believe this is a deliberate attack given that Akure South Local Government is a stronghold of Eyitayo Jegede, SAN and it is aimed at creating voter apathy among the determined electorate, by creating fear of endangering their lives if they go out to vote on Saturday.”

  • Akeredolu: My second term shall be a reference point for good leadership

Akeredolu: My second term shall be a reference point for good leadership

    Our Reporter

The Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, on Sunday, told the people of the state to expect a purposeful and business-oriented government in his second term, if he’s reelected.

Speaking during a debate organized by the Ondo State Radio Television Corporation, OSRC, Akeredolu said the first term of his administration was used to initiate policies that would prepare a good ground to push the state towards the pact of industrialisation in line with the vision of the founding fathers of Western Nigeria, saying “My second term shall be a positive reference point in Nigeria.”

Akeredolu also denied the rumour that his nuclear family members and children have taken over the rein of governance in the state, challenging anyone with fact to come out to prove that any of his children has been awarded contract in the state.

“Contrary to the believe of many Nigerians that second term governors do not do well, I want to say, today, by the grace of God, that my second term shall be a positive reference point in Nigeria. You know, I will govern the people without much distractions. I want to return Ondo State to the reign of Baba Ajasin when factories were competing with each others.

“I want to run Ondo the way our sage, Awolowo governed  Yoruba Land. I want history to be kind to me. You see how our baba, Awolowo is being remembered today, almost 35 years after he died,  me too, I want to be remembered like him.”

He added that, “I’m not yet satisfied with the number of jobs we have created. I’m determined to do more. Yes, we have a number of industries that we have facilitated here and I’m proud of that. But I’m saying we can do more.”

On job creation and investment drive, Akeredolu said “this state has been industrialised in a way that it has never been industrialised since Baba Ajasin left Government House. Today, the first cassava to ethanol plant in the nation of Nigeria is in Ore, Ondo state through our investment drive.

“The first HDF plant in Nigeria is in Ondo state. We are talking about the textile industry and the paper mill all at Ore industrial park. These are the things we have brought here. It is for the people to see.

“We have Dongfeng that’s assembling trucks at our industrial hub in Ore.  That’s monumental. Like I said earlier, Ore will be the new Nnewi before 2024. We are talking serious investment here not like those who spent eight years and cleared a vast land in Bolorunduro for truck assembly plant but they only ended up assembling grass.”

On the drive of his administration to have a Deep Sea Port in Ilaje Local Government Area of the state, Akeredolu said, ”We have done what no governor has done in this state. Today, we have the outline business case. We have the implementation plans.

“We have taken this to the Port Authority. It’s leaving there now for the Ministry of Transport. By the time it gets to the Federal Executive Council (FEC), we will get the port declaration. I’m sure that there will be a functional port in Ondo state before 2024 by the grace of God.”

On agriculture, the governor said “we have introduced the youth on the ridges. We have distributed over 400, 000 improved seedlings of cocoa to our farmers. We have over 10,000 hectares of land at Jugbere for cocoa plantation.

“We have youth on the ridges that has over 1,000 youths in agriculture. We have the Agropreneurs that’s being facilitated by the state government and the Federal Government We have cleared many hectares of land for our youths. We are encouraging our youths to go into agriculture.”

On health care, Akeredolu said “Today, in mother and child hospital, children under the age of five are treated free of charge. But, the mother must have the Kaadi Igbe-Ayo. We have also introduced the Contributory Health Insurance Scheme. When we came here, there are just two mother and child hospitals in the state. But today, we have added five more in the Northern and Southern senatorial districts of the state. Only yesterday, we added another mother and child hospital in Ifon where you have the best facility in the state.”

Speaking on his feats on infrastructural development, Akeredolu said “I want to thank the people of Ondo state because in my travel during the campaign tour we have gone through a number roads that we have constructed. And in so many places people shouted Mr. Infrastructure. Mr. Road. I thank them very much.

“This is because we are passionate about the issue of infrastructure. As you can see in our three and a half years, look at the roads we have constructed. Over 500 kilometers. Look at that redemption bridge in Ore. Several governments have come and lied about it but today, we did it in two years. Look at Oke-Alabojuto in Ikare, look at Oke -Ogba, we have made history in terms of road construction

“Lastly, I’m here today, and I boast of my own integrity. When the opposition people say consultants have taken over our state, ask them for evidence. Let anyone bring evidence that any member of my family has gotten a consultancy job in this state.”

‘Oyetola not mobilising to rig for Akeredolu’

    By Toba Adedeji, Osogbo

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Prince Adegboyega Famodun, has said Governor Adegboyega Oyetola is not mobilising members to rig the party’s standard-bearer, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, into power.

He said Oyetola, being a member of the APC National Caretaker Committee, identified a local government in Ondo State where they have a large number of Osun State indigenes and is canvassing votes in favour of the APC candidate.

He boasted that victory awaits Akeredolu on Saturday.

The APC chairman, represented by the party’s Senatorial Leader in Osun Central, Adeoye Adelakun, spoke at the weekend at a meeting with party leaders at Ada in Boripe Local Government.

He said: “Governor Oyetola is not mobilising APC members from Osun State to Ondo State to rig the poll for Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. What the governor is doing is that he identified a local government, Odigbo, where most residents are Osun State indigenes. He went there to canvass votes for Akeredolu. The people complained that they are marginalised by the current government. So, he felt he should talk to them.

“The reason I am here is to listen and hold a meeting with the leaders of our party here in Ada because they are also complaining that they are marginalised.”

Governor has repositioned education, says ex-commissioner

    Our Reporter

Ex-Education Commissioner Princess Oladunni Odu has attributed the achievements recorded by the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) at uplifting the standard of education to the kindness of Almighty God and magnanimity of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Odu, the SUBEB chairman, addressing reporters in Akure, said:

“Akeredolu is the secret behind SUBEB success story. He has repositioned education in the state.”

She said immediately he was sworn in, he set up a committee headed by Prof. Adesomoju to unravel the mystery behind the decadence in the education sector and proffer solution to the problem.

Odu said: “Being a member of that committee, we discovered that for four years, the preceding administration did not release the counterpart funding, which led to the collapse of infrastructure in the school system.

“To halt the ugly trend, the governor released a huge sum of N3.9billiion for general turn around maintenance and this we have done with rehabilitation and reconstruction of school buildings, provision of computers, sporting equipment and games for the children, water and sanitation, training for teachers and workers, as well as security with perimeter fencing. These have enhanced the quality and standard of education in the state.”

  • Averting violence in Ondo poll

    Averting violence in Ondo poll

Correspondent Osagie Otabor writes on the imperative of a violence-free governorship poll in Ondo State.

THERE are fears that next Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State might not be peaceful as was witnessed in the September 19 governorship election in Edo State. This is due to incidences of violence, allegations of destruction of bill boards, attacks on party supporters that have continued to trail campaigns of different political parties across the state.

The attacks have continued despite last month’s warning by the state Commissioner of Police, Bolaji Salami, to political actors in the state that he would ensure prosecution of anybody caught with firearms or causing violence.

Salami had summoned leaders of political parties after the clash between supporters of the All Progressives Congress and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party at Oba Akoko in Akoko South West local government.

According to Salami, “The Command will not allow thuggery and violence in this election. This is our last warning to all the parties. The use of any firearm is not allowed. Enough is enough. Let the tension continue to rise in your campaigns and not in handling weapons. If we finish killing our selves, who will vote for us. We don’t want people to be fighting.

“This is our last warning to all political parties. The world is watching us. Let is not disgrace ourselves in the committee of nations. That our election activities is going primitive is not good for ourselves. If it turns to mentioning names, we will do that, we are here to maintain law and order and provide security for all indigenes of the state. Let this one be the time we will be talking on anything thuggery. We are just few days to the election.“

However, formoste election monitoring group, Yiaga Africa, in its latest release identified least six Local Government Areas (LGs) in Ondo State as flashpoint for violence during the election.

The report reads in parts, “Whilst INEC has shown commitment and readiness for the election, key contenders and political actors have advanced narratives that forewarn of breakdown of law and order including alleged threats to deploy state and non-state instruments of force and armed violence.

“This could affect the efficiency and credibility of electoral management processes, if not curtailed. “Specific cases of voter inducement were reported in Akoko South West, Akure South, Akoko South-East, Akoko North West, Ifedore and Odigbo LGAs. “Akoko South-West, Akure South, Idanre, Owo, Akoko South-East and Ese-Odo are considered hotspots and flashpoint of violence due to the prevalence of pre-election violence.”

Areas where violence have occurred in the last two months were Owo, Akoko South West and Idanre.

At Idanre, a staunched supporter of the ZLP identified as Taye was shot dead by yet to be identified persons. The killing led to protest in the town.

Chairman of the ZLP in Idanre, Ademehintoye Claudus, who narrated that the killers were sponsored by chieftains of a major opposition political party in the area.

He said, “Taye was killed because he was canvassing support for the ZLP being a member of our party. And what happened has also confirmed that they are calling for war in this election because they have been attacking us unchallenged. In fact, the party has broken the peace accord reached at the palace of the Monarch of Idanre with other political parties ahead of this contest.

“Although, we have appealed to our members and supporters to remain calm even in the face of this provocation and asked them not to take laws into their own hands.”

Governor Akeredolu was passing through Oba Akoko town to a Ikare Akoko for political campaign at a time candidate of the PDP, Eyitayo Jegede, was at traditional ruler’s palace in Oba Akoko. Fracas broke out between their supporters. Over 15 vehicles were destroyed while eight persons were injured.

It was a blame game between Jegede and Akeredolu as both blame each as causing the fracas. Spokesman for Akeredolu campaign council, Richard Olatunde, said it was hoodlums of Jegede that attacked the campaign convoy of Governor Akeredolu.

According to him, “In their crass display of madness and thuggery, the hoodlums set ablaze the branded campaign vehicle donated to the Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation by Ambassador Sola Iji.

“The driver of the vehicle sustained bodily injury and he is now receiving treatment at a government hospital.

“While we are shocked and saddened by this attack, we are not too surprised, because the PDP has shown that it is not focusing on issues in its campaign for the election. They will rather deploy violence and falsehood to score cheap political points.

“We say this is despicable and we view it as a sign of desperation by opposition parties in the state, who can’t stand the popularity of the APC, as they have seen the handwriting of their imminent defeat in the coming election on the wall.”

But, Jegede at a press briefing in Akure said it was thugs in the convoy of Akeredolu that first fired shots into his direction. He said it was an assassination attempt on his life.

Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Eyitayo Jegede, has described the clash between members of his party and the All Progressives Congress in Oba Akoko, Akoko South West local government was an assassination attempt in his life.

Jegede said the attempted assassination was to weaken his campaigns.

According to him, “A dangerous dimension was introduced into our electioneering process by the APC under the direct watch of Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu during our stop at the palace of Oloba of Oba Akoko, in Akoko South West LGA.

“We have a schedule of campaign approved by security agencies. No other political party was scheduled for that area.  We were in the palace when we heard gunshots fired at all of us who were within the precinct of Olaba palace. The shots were fired with the Governor leading the convoy.

“15 vehicles were destroyed. I reported this formally to the Police Commissioner. This is a clear case of attempt on my life. I have not seen this desperation.  You can see long convoy of the Governor openly displaying arms. If anything happen to me the public knows who to hold responsible. I am not in this game because I am desperate but to free the people from pains and poverty.

“What happened today is a collective view of the entire APC structure. We are focus on winning the elections and we will do it peacefully. We will defend ourself in this process. Being in government is not a license to kill people.

“This will not continued. We are focused. We will win this election. They want to instill fear so that we will not come out to campaign. We will not be afraid. When bullets are fired at invidual that is clear attempted assassination.”

Governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party, Martins Olateru-Olagbegi, had earlier raised alarm about attacks on his supporters in Owo.

According to him, “I am not worried about defeating Akeredolu. I only appeal to the media and people of like minds to appeal to the ruling party to create an énabling environment. Let everybody compete fairly. Instead of muscling people with guns, bottle and not to be able to campaign.

“My hometown, Owo, has been decimated with the ruling party supporters saying the town must have only one party. If the Governor is confident that he doesn’t have problem, he should allow free and fair contest. Nigeria is not a one party system. If he has done a fairly good job, he should not be worried.

“I am not worried about winning. I am worried about a fair competition. I have taken my case to the Commissioner of Police and INEC to let them know what we are going through because in order to get free and fair elections, people need to get to the masses not for destroying posters and even attacking people. I was in Owo when such thing happened to my party people because they wore my party cap.

“There should be free and fair competition. Why is everybody unable to speak their mind. Why are they attacking my people. I spent my hard earned money to put all these up. All public facilities are plastered with posters of the ruling party. Allow free and fair competition and allow people listen. Don’t let people be afraid to attend rallies to listen without be feared of being maimed and attacked. We have made report. I am a Prince from Owo, why should anybody said my party cannot be free in Owo.”

Last Tuesday’s clash at Owo between supporters of the PDP and the APC left 13 persons injured and 20 vehicles destroyed even as robbers had a field day dispossessing people of the valuables.

Jegede was in Owo, hometown of Governor Akeredolu to solicit for votes. He alleged that APC members blocked access to the palace and his maternal home with a view to deny him access to both places.

According to him, “Prior to our entry into Ipele, touts and miscreants under the APC had unleashed terror on our members with several casualties. These miscreants were dispersed by a joint team of police and NSCDC officers. The DPO of Ipele is alleged to have not only supervised the assault but also arrested six members of the PDP including the youth leader whose hands had been broken by the attackers and beaten to a coma.

He said one Amuda Sikiru was shot in the face and abdomen while a truck in his convoy was completely burnt down.

But, Richard said the PDP went berserk when no one received them into Owo town and alleged that Jegede ordered his thugs to unleash coordinated attacks on the people of Ipele and Ijebu in Owo local government area.

Some of the victims who spoke when State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bolaji Salami and the Commandant of the Nigeria Security And Civil Defense Corps, Philip Ayuba visited the area said they were unjustly attacked.

Mrs. Nike Alale, said she was attacked while buying fuel at Bovas Gas Station at Aro Junction in Owo.

She said: “We were buying fuel here and all of a sudden we heard gun shots. We had to run inside the fuel station office. We were watching them as they destroyed my vehicle. They were shouting “Eyi La fe”. They stole all the valuables in my car including my phones and this car document.

“They came down from a PDP campaign convoy. We saw them shouting kill them! Kill them! There is no APC sticker on my car. I am not an APC member. This is unfair.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has expressed its support for the party’s candidate in the Saturday Ondo State governorship election, Mr Eyitayo Jegede (SAN).

The Forum Chairman and Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal made the declaration in a statement issued by the Director-General of the forum, C.I.D. Maduabum in Abuja on Sunday.

Tambuwal said that the PDP governors were united, strong and primed to do its utmost to ensure the election of Jegede who has the experience, dynamism and programme of action to return Ondo State to her glory days.

He said that the forum’s attention was drawn to a story to the effect that there was a division among PDP governors with respect to Ondo gubernatorial elections.

The governor described the publication as tendentious, malicious, prejudicial, biased, procured, inciting, false and fake and planted by retrogressive and reactionary forces.

Tambuwal said that nothing could be further from the truth.

“The governors are in no doubt that any division in its ranks will be counterproductive to PDP, her candidate and its quest to restore democracy, good governance, and accountability not only in Ondo State but Nigeria at large.”

“The PDP governors will storm Akure on Oct. 7 for the grand finale of the PDP governorship campaign.

“We will be in Akure to conclude a memorable grassroots based campaign mounted by the PDP and her candidate in the last few weeks that has seemingly turned the tide in Ondo,” he said.

PDP urges Buhari not to succumb to pressure on Ondo

    Agency Reporter

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari not to succumb to pressure to renege on his resolve not to interfere in elections, especially in the Saturday governorship election in Ondo State.

Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, Chairman, Publicity Sub-Committee of the PDP National Campaign Council for Ondo Governorship Election, made the call at a news conference in Abuja on Sunday.

Ologbondiyan urged Buhari not to succumb to the pressure of those plotting to use violence and ‘federal might’ to muscle the Ondo election against the wishes and aspirations of the people of the state

He said that the campaign council had reviewed all prospects relating to the Oct. 10 election.

Ologbondiyan said that the party affirmed that its candidate, Eyitayo Jegede, enjoyed the greater support of the overwhelming majority of Ondo people and he was indisputably in good stand for victory on Saturday.

He said that it was not Jegede’s fault that Akeredolu did not perform as a governor, and that the people identified Jegede as a rallying point in their quest for a new and purposeful leadership.

Ologbondiyan said if Akeredolu had done well in the last four years, he would have been celebrating his achievements instead of threatening his people and seeking to drag in the presidency.

“Our campaign therefore calls on Buhari not to succumb to pressure by sAkeredolu and the APC to renege in his resolve not to interfere in elections, as amply witnessed in the Sept. 19 Edo election.

Read Also: Ondo 2020: Jegede denies ZLP, says no compromise with Ajayi

“We invite Mr President to note the applauses and commendations coming to him from all parts of our nation and the global community over the non-interference of his Presidency in the conduct of Edo election.

“For allowing a free, fair and credible election in Edo state, a development that allowed the will of the people to prevail.

“Mr President must not allow Akeredolu, who had been justly rejected by his people for non-performance and who has declared his citizens as his “enemies for life”, to detract from his desire in this regard.

“Our campaign therefore urges President Buhari to adopt the same Edo stance to ensure a free, fair and credible election in Ondo, without regard to partisan consideration,.

“This is important so that he can leave a legacy of electoral uprightness for which posterity and history can be kind to him.

“We make this demand because it is clear that the tide favours Eyitayo Jegede in this election,” Ologbondiyan said.

He urged Buhari to note the ongoing spate of violence already being perpetrated on the streets of Ondo state.

Ologbondiyan urged Buhari to direct the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to clean the ground for a peaceful election by immediately pulling in characters plotting to perpetrate violence during the election.

“This is more so as information reaching us indicates that such characters plot to pose as agents of federal authorities and unleash mayhem on the people.

“Mr President is therefore further urged to direct INEC and security agencies to restrict themselves to their statutory responsibilities as the Ondo people are ready to treat violators as fake security and fake INEC operatives.

Ologbondiyan said that the party’s campaign stood with the Ondo people in their determination to rescue their state, adding that nothing would stop them from achieving this collective resolve.

Akeredolu to PDP, Jegede: Violence can’t guarantee your victory

    Our Reporter

The Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, on Sunday told the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate for the October 10th governorship elections in the state, Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, that the renewed violence being unleashed against his supporters and members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), will not stop them from being defeated at the poll.

Akeredolu said his popularity and overwhelming support has become a source of worry to the PDP, hence, the resort of the opposition party to violence and brigandage.

In a statement signed by the spokesman of his campaign organisation, Mr. Richard Olatunde, Akeredolu fingered the Member representing Akure South/Akure North in the Federal House of Representatives, Mr. Adedayo Omolafe, popularly known as Expensive, as the person who masterminded the violence on Sunday morning which left five people injured, saying “the violence spot is Omolafe Adedayo’s base.”

The statement reads in part, “The Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation strongly condemns the unabated attack on supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) by thugs loyal to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Akure, the state capital.

“This latest recourse to attack, thuggery and wanton violence by the PDP is the height of insensitivity, irresponsibility and indecency. It is obviously provocative.

“The thugs launched attacks on anyone seen with APC branded items like clothes and caps, as well as taxi drivers with Akeredolu stickers on their vehicles at Obanla in Akure last night.

“The violence continued into the morning on Sunday, with many beaten, macheted and clubbed for showing support to the APC.

“The Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation is shocked by this latest reign of violence, wherein some PDP leaders, in brazen display of wickedness and barbarism, supervised attacks on members and supporters of APC at the Obanla junction in Akure metropolis.

“We note that Obanla junction is the political base of some PDP chieftains, like the member of House of Representatives, representing Akure South/Akure North Constituency, Adedayo Omolafe, popularly called Expensive. Therefore, the source of this latest wave of thuggery and violence should not be far-fetched.

“We know that the popularity of the APC candidate, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has become a source of worry to the PDP. But rather than seeking legitimate means to shore up support, the party is bent on decimating the overwhelming and massive support that the APC is enjoying across the state, ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

“It is unfortunate that the PDP continues to move on this path of perdition despite several appeals. Our charge to security agents to stop the party from turning our dear state into a theatre of war in the name of election suffices and shall be sustained. This is to underscore our resolve not seek self help as we inche towards the election day.

“Ondo state belongs to the people and the PDP must stop intimidating and maiming anybody in an attempt to salvage a lost cause. They should realise by now that the electorate will not accept them and their candidate with this brand of barbaric politics.”
