  • All you need to know about Hamas, Israel-Palestine conflict

All you need to know about Hamas, Israel-Palestine conflict

Hamas has a host of leadership bodies that perform various political, military, and social functions. General policy is set by an overarching consultative body, often called the politburo, which operates in exile. Local committees manage grassroots issues in Gaza and the West Bank.

Hamas fired rockets and mortars into Israel since the group took over the Gaza Strip in the mid- 2000s. Hamas gained the ability to build its own missiles after training with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and proxies.

In October 2023, Hamas launched a massive surprise attack on southern Israel, killing hundreds of civilians and soldiers and taking dozens more as hostages.

Israel declared war on the group in response and indicated its military is planning for a long campaign to defeat it. On several occasions this year, hundreds of Israeli forces carried out military raids in the Palestinian city of Jenin.

In January, a Palestinian man killed seven people outside a synagogue in East Jerusalem.

After a spate of terrorist attacks in Israeli cities in 2022, Israeli forces killed at least 166 Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

    Historical region of Palestine

To understand the history of the conflict, we first need to understand Palestine. Before 1948, Palestine was a geographical region located in the Eastern Mediterranean, bordered by modern-day Israel, Jordan and Lebanon.

It was home to a diverse population of Arabs, Jews, and Christians – as all groups had strong religious ties to the area, especially the biblical city of Jerusalem.

In 1947, the United Nations (UN) voted for Palestine to be split into separate Jewish and Arab States and for Jerusalem to become an international city.

In 1948, British leaders ceased trying to solve the conflict and Jewish leaders declared the creation of the State of Israel. This marked the end of the British rule in Palestine.

Many Palestinians objected to the creation of Israel and a war ensued. By the time the fighting ended, Israel controlled most of the territory – and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians had been driven from their homes in what they call Al Nakba, or “The Catastrophe”.

There was never any peace agreement which means that more tension, disputes, and wars have continued over the following decades.

The area formerly known as Palestine is divided into three parts: the State of Israel, the West Bank (of the Jordan River), and the Gaza Strip.

    What’s Gaza Strip?

The Gaza Strip is central to the current ‘war’ as it is from where Hamas entered Israel early on Saturday (7 October) and has long been a contested territory.

The air space over Gaza is controlled by Israel, which also restricts who and what goods are allowed in and out through its borders.

However, Gaza is under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority and the Strip itself is governed by Hamas.

Hamas and Israel have engaged in several wars over the years, with Hamas repeatedly firing deadly rockets at Israel – and Israel also consistently attacking Hamas with air strikes. Together, with Egypt, Israel has also blockaded the Gaza Strip since 2007, which it says is necessary for security.
    Timeline of conflict-related activities:

In May 2021, the Israeli police raided Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, the third-holiest site in Islam, which set off an 11-day war between Israel and Hamas that killed more than 200 Palestinians and more than 10 Israelis.

In 2018, at least 170 Palestinians were killed as Israel responded to protests along the barrier fence that separates Gaza and Israel.

In 2014, Hamas kidnapped and killed three Israeli teenagers, prompting attacks from Israel, and rocket launches from Gaza, in a conflict that killed more than 1,881 Palestinians and more than 60 Israelis.

In November 2012, Israel killed Ahmed al-Jabari, Hamas’s military chief, setting off more than a week of an exchange of fire in which more than 150 Palestinians and at least six Israelis are killed.

In January 2009, Israel and Palestinian groups declared unilateral cease-fires, then Israel withdrew from Gaza, and redeployed to the strip’s perimeter.

In response to rocket fire from Gaza, Israel launched an attack on Hamas targets in December 2008 that killed 200 Palestinians. Shortly after, they opened a ground war against Hamas. In total, 1,200 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed.

In January 2006, about a year after the death of the Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat, the co-founder of the paramilitary organization Fatah, Hamas won the Palestinian parliamentary election. One year later, Hamas seized control of Gaza, routing the Fatah forces.

Beyond the current situation, experts believe what’s now a fight between Israel and Hamas has the potential to turn into a wider war, convulsing a region that hosts many rivalries.

Here are some of the relationships from the just concluded BBNaija Allstars show:

    1. Soma and Angel (Somgel)

Angel and Soma’s connection underwent different stages in the All Stars house.

From serene moments to turbulent times, Somgel experienced it all and as the season progressed, we saw a part of these two that made us coo- awwwn.

The couple stayed together throughout the season with some hiccups and have continued the relationship outside the house.

    2. Adekunle and Venita (Adenita)

Adekunle and the phoenix Venita showed us that when it comes to love, age is nothing but a number.

This dynamic duo’s relationship demonstrated how to strategize as a unit, as they were frequently spotted analyzing roommates, spending quality time together, and having romantic moments.

As loving as this ship was, they also had their own fair share of issues as they failed to properly communicate their grievances with each other

    3. Cross, Kim Oprah and Pere love triangle

The bond between Cross and Kim Oprah became obvious the minute she stepped into the All Stars house as Biggie’s houseguest.

While Cross always insisted that they were good friends, it wasn’t lost on us how inseparable they were in the house.

The ‘friendship’ web that Cross and Kim Oprah created drew Pere into it as well, and we saw an entanglement among two close friends.

When Ebuka asked her to choose between Cross and Pere, Kim Oprah said that she was going to focus on Cross.

    5. Neo Energy and TolaniBaj

Neoenergy and TolaniBaj were also caught in the middle of ship drama during their time on the All Stars show.

Neo’s friendship with Tolanibaj was evident, but she made certain that no other female housemates got too near to her “comfort” person.

  • Seven Nigerian artistes who had issues with record labels

Seven Nigerian artistes who had issues with record labels

The music industry is a tough nut to crack, and a lot of artists struggle to navigate without the help of record labels.

However, there has been a few instances in Nigeria of record labels fallout with artistes due to contractual issues, artiste brand etc

Here are seven musicians who have had issue with their labels:

    1. Wizkid:

Before launching his Starboy label, Wizkid was under Banky W’s EME Records.

He fell out with them because of the unfavorable split he was given on his contract – where he was reportedly getting 25% of his turnover.

This was at a time when Wizkid was the major artist on the label and one of the biggest acts in the country.

He asked for a review of the contract, but an agreement wasn’t reached, and as a result, he left. This later led to an online spat

    2.  Cynthia Morgan:

Cynthia Morgan secured a recording contract with Jude Okoye’s Northside Entertainment Inc. in 2013.

After a few months, she released two chart-topping songs, “Don’t Break My Heart” and “Lead Me On,” which were well appreciated by fans; the latter was nominated for “Best Reggae/Dancehall Single” at The 2014 Headies.

Cynthia went into seclusion after recording a few popular songs until 2020, when she resurfaced to social media and trended highly after saying that Jude Okoye, the owner of record label Northside Entertainment, stole everything she owned away from her.

The singer revealed this during an Instagram live session in which she lamented the loss of her name and Instagram account owing to a terrible deal.

    3. Kizz Daniel:

Kizz Daniel, a Nigerian musician, burst onto the music scene in 2014 with his popular song “Woju”; he was signed to G-Worldwide Label at the time.

Kizz Daniel had a falling out with his record label in 2017.

The musician was allegedly in breach of the conditions of his seven-year contract, which he signed in 2013.

The deal was due to expire in 2020, however Kizz Daniel opted to leave the label before it expired. Several constraints were imposed on the singer’s ability to cooperate with other artists.

An injunction preventing him from performing over the holiday season of 2017 was issued as a result of the disagreement.

    4. Temmie Ovwasa:

Singer Temmie Ovwasa, has once again made some allegations against her former record label boss, Olamide, claiming that he ‘messed her mind up’.

During a question and answer session via her Instagram handle, the singer was asked by a fan if she still keeps in touch with the YBNL boss.

In response to the question, the young lady alleged that although Olamide gave a platform, he rejected all the deals and show that she was offered. Ovwasa also alleged that her former boss stopped her from releasing songs.

She claimed, “That man brought me to Lagos from Ilorin as an 18-year-old, put me on a platform then proceeded to reject every show I got, every offer I got. Stopped me from releasing songs, kept me in his house with his wife (who spoke to me like I was garbage in front of her friends) and kid in the name of ‘family’. Put my face on the wall, on an album where the ‘men’ were allowed to be people.

    5. Runtown:

In 2014, Runtown signed a record deal with Eric Many Entertainment, which is controlled by Prince Okwudili Umenyiora, the millionaire CEO of Dilly Motors.

After a few hits, their relationship soured, and matters intensified when his label accused him of signing up for and attending events behind his firm’s back – a breach of contract.

After determining that the situation was unfavorable, Runtown attempted to cancel his contract in May 2016.

He claimed that he never got compensation for live concerts, recorded royalty revenue (MTN Music Plus, caller ring back tracks), and so on. The musician further claimed that the label threatened him with death.

    7. May D:

May D took to social media after leaving Square Records in 2012, claiming he lived under unbearable conditions while signed with the P Square brothers.

He painted a grim picture of shared living quarters, using a television carton as a makeshift bed and covering himself with his shirt.

Jude Okoye defended their stance, explaining that they signed artists to give back to society but encountered issues when May D wanted to become a part of Psquare, a brand that had taken years to build.
