Six ways to keep your mental health in check

Depression and anxiety are two frequent mental health conditions that can have a substantial impact on all facets of life, including academic or professional performance, relationships with family and friends, and one’s ability to participate in community activities.

In a message for World Mental Health Day observed on Monday, October 10th, WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti said that the day offered a chance to raise awareness of Africa’s heavy and expanding burden of mental health conditions, with children and adolescents being the most affected.

Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being are all parts of our mental health as they influence our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Additionally, they influence how we respond to stress, interact with others, and make decisions from childhood and adolescence through maturity, mental health is crucial at every stage of life.

In commemoration of world mental health awareness, here are six ways to keep your mental health always in check:

Keep your social media consumption in check

Of course, you need to stay informed, but excessive use of media is unlikely to make you feel well. It is also important to get your facts from established, reputable sources. Avoid sensationalist websites which tend to predict doom and gloom and incite hysteria.
Social media could be a great tool for staying connected with family and friends while restrictions are still intact. If you care about your mental health, though, set some limits on how much time you spend scrolling through your timeline on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

Stop glorifying being busy and get some sleep.

Ensure you have enough sleep to keep you healthy. Without it, not only will you feel like a groggy mess at work and in life, but your mental health will almost certainly suffer. Sleep isn’t a magic reset button for your moods, but it can make a huge difference when you’re not getting enough.

    Learn to understand yourself

Protect your mental health by seeking to understand yourself instead of getting other people to be your major source of happiness. Learn to befriend yourself and get comfortable with being friends with yourself. This is one way to protect your mental health. Placing your happiness in the hands of others will mean signing yourself up for unhappiness. Everyone has their own life to live, and in the lives of people around you and the world generally, you are not the main character. In other words, the world does not revolve around you alone.

Be friends with yourself and seek to be comfortable with yourself. Everyone has their lives to live and their problems to deal with. They cannot always be there for you.

    Surround yourself with positive-minded people

People with strong family or social connections are generally healthier than those who lack a support network. Make plans with supportive family members and friends, or seek out activities where you can meet new people, such as a club, class or support group

Avoid alcohol intake and other drugs

Keep alcohol use to a minimum and avoid other drugs. Sometimes people use alcohol and other drugs to “self-medicate” but in reality, alcohol and other drugs only aggravate problems.

Seek advice from people you trust

You don’t need to reach a certain level of difficulty before treatment or medicines are necessary. Talk to someone and get help if your mood swings persist, especially if they are interfering with your everyday life. That person may be your family physician, a friend, a therapist, or even a member of your human resources team.

  • Five foods ulcer patients should avoid

Five foods ulcer patients should avoid

When the thick coating of mucus designed to protect the stomach’s digestive fluids is thinner than normal, an ulcer develops around the stomach, causing the digestive acids to eat away at the stomach’s lining tissues.

If treated quickly (using medication, lifestyle changes, among other things), stomach ulcers are curable. Eating certain foods also helps to keep ulcers under control.

Some meals are best avoided by ulcer patients in order to prevent aggravating the already irritated area.

Here are five food ulcer patients should stay away from:

    * Spicy foods
Spicy meals aggravate the painful area by irritating the stomach lining. In some circumstances, the symptoms of ulcers are also known to worsen while eating spicy meals.

    *Coffee
Actually, coffee irritates an ulcer rather than causing one. If the goal is to repair the ulcer, it is recommended to avoid coffee or drink it as little as possible because the caffeine in coffee erodes the existing sore area (ulcer), making it worse.

    * Alcohol
Alcohol and alcohol-containing beverages should be avoided by anyone with an ulcer. Alcohol consumption raises the stomach’s acidity, aggravating the ulcer and making recovery nearly hard.

    *Red Meat
Red meat should be avoided by ulcer patients, especially those with peptic ulcers! Red meat takes longer to digest, causing the stomach’s acid level to rise, irritating the area and exacerbating the symptoms. Lean proteins like chicken, turkey, and others can take its place.

    *Refined Foods
Replace processed meals like pasta, white bread, sugar, and more with leafy greens, fruits that are high in antioxidants, and lots of water.

  • Nine famous singers banned from other countries

Nine famous singers banned from other countries

Several musicians have received severe sanctions, such as lifetime bans for improper words or actions. In more extreme circumstances, when a public figure violates the rules or beliefs of an entire country and is banned from entering the nation.

Countries reserve the right to completely bar any international traveler from entering. Although less common, several celebrities have gotten lifetime travel bans from various nations for a variety of reasons.

    Here are nine popular singers banned from other countries;

    1. Beyonce – Malaysia

The pop star was forced to reschedule a concert in Malaysia after being banned from the country for alleged misconduct. The popular singer was banned due to what the government considers to be immoral dress and behavior that promotes, “Western sexy performances.”, according to the BBC.

Beyoncé seems to remain a popular figure in the area, but Malaysian fans will have to travel out of the country to see the singer perform live.

    2. Justin Bieber – China

Justin Bieber was banned from performing in China due to his “bad conduct.” According to a statement from Beijing’s Municipal Bureau of Culture, “Justin Bieber is a gifted singer. But in order to maintain order in the Chinese market and purify the Chinese performance environment, it is not suitable to bring in badly behaved entertainers.”

However, in Argentina he was banned for allegedly assaulting a photographer.

    3. Chris Brown – Australia

In 2009, the singer was convicted of felony assault for hitting his then-girlfriend Rihanna. The Australian Federal Government refused him entry in 2009, citing a zero-tolerance policy for domestic violence. Brown attempted to persuade them to reconsider their choice by volunteering to launch a domestic violence awareness campaign.

But ex-Australian minister Michaelia Cash rejected, saying, “People need to understand if you are going to commit domestic violence and then you want to travel around the world, there are going to be countries that say to you, ‘You cannot come in because you are not of the character we expect in Australia.’”.

    4. Miley Cyrus – China and the Dominican Republic

The photo of the “Wrecking Ball” singer got her barred from entering China. In 2009, Cyrus slanted her eyes in a stereotyped manner, causing ex-Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi to make a statement saying, “Miss Cyrus has made it apparent she is no friend of China or anybody of East Asian origin.” We have no desire to further contaminate our children’s minds with her American illiteracy.” After Cyrus apologized and denied any racial intent, the restriction was removed.

However, Cyrus came under fire again in 2014 when Dominican Republic government officials refused to allow her to bring her tour to their nation. They took issue with her “acts against morality and conventions, which are criminal under Dominican law.”

    5. Lady Gaga – Indonesia and China

Lady Gaga is unpopular in Muslim nations, like Indonesia, where she is viewed as a corrupting influence. In 2012, Indonesian law enforcement denied the singer a concert permit in Jakarta, citing obscenity and immorality in her music style.

Lady GaGa is one of several celebrities barred from entering China, but unlike most, she was barred twice. The pop singer was barred from performing in 2011 due to her flamboyant character and boundary-pushing dress, which the authorities deemed “vulgar.”

In 2016, GaGa was barred from meeting with the Dalai Lama, who has been barred from entering China since 1959. Following their meeting, the administration released a statement announcing the ban and instructing media outlets to stop airing her content.

    6. Jay Z – China

The US rapper and husband of Beyoncé was banned from performing in China in 2006 because his music contains “too many profane lyrics”. The Ministry of Culture said in a statement that it had “decided to protect the city’s hip hop fans from nasty lyrics about pimps, guns and drugs”.

Jay-Z had been scheduled to perform in Shanghai, but the promoter said some of his songs apparently “contain too much vulgar language”.

    7. Selena Gomez – Russia and China

The singer was denied a visa by Russian officials in September 2016, forcing her to cancel two gigs.

Russian authorities cited her stated plans to speak out against the country’s anti-LGBT policies during her shows as the grounds for her visa suspension. The government passed legislation prohibiting the marketing of “non-traditional sexual relationships to children” in June of that year.

Not long after, China refused Gomez a tour visa because of images she took with the Dalai Lama two years before.

    8. Snoop Dogg – Norway

In 2012, Snoop Doggy Dogg was barred from visiting Norway for two years. The rapper was stopped on his way to Norway’s Hove Festival carrying eight grams of cannabis and cash in excess of the legal limit.

According to the BBC, Snoop Dogg was allowed to play at the event but was later fined and barred from returning to the nation for two years.

    9. Elton John – Egypt

In 2010, Elton John was forced to cancel a private concert in Egypt when the country banned him due to his sexuality and his public comments on gay rights.

  • Eight contemporary artistes accused of copyright infringement

Eight contemporary artistes accused of copyright infringement

Cases of copyright infringement in the music scene have overtime become a common phenomenon.

This happens when an artiste or music management feels aggrieved about another artiste sampling or copying their work without proper approval.

Some of such cases have been settled out of court while others were resolved by the court with some still brewing.

Here are eight contemporary artistes accused of copyright infringement:

    Joeboy

Popular singer Asa has issued a copyright infringement notice to her colleague Joeboy over his latest song ‘Contour’.

The notice shared by Joeboy on his Instagram story showed Asa demanded N300 million and gave a 24-hour ultimatum for the song to be removed from all digital streaming platforms.

The singer, through her management, also asked for a 60 percent publishing split on the song, and a written apology, as seen in the notice.

Taking to his Instagram story to react to the suit, Joeboy said people seemed to want to take him for a ride because of his quiet nature.

He further dared Asa’s management to take legal action and reminded them that the 24 hours notice had elapsed.

    Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran will stand trial in the US over claims he copied his hit 2014 song Thinking Out Loud from Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On, after a federal judge rejected the pop star’s efforts to toss out the long-running copyright case.

Sheeran’s lawyers had argued that the lawsuit was invalid because the elements that were similar in the two songs were not unique enough to be covered by copyright in the first place. They cited a number of other songs, including The Temptations’ Since I Lost My Baby, as examples of tracks with similar elements.

But the US district judge Louis Stanton said there was “no bright-line rule” for deciding such questions, and Sheeran would need to face a jury of his peers. The judge cited a disagreement between musical experts as a reason for his decision.

He had won a much-publicised copyright case bordering on allegations that his super-hit song ‘Shape of you’, was inspired and has musical similarities to ‘Oh Why’ by two songwriters Sami Chokri and Ross O’Donoghue.

    Sam Smith

Sam Smith shot to fame with his song “Stay with Me,” but Tom Petty wasn’t very impressed.

Petty and Jeff Lynne, who both wrote the song “I Won’t Back Down,” claimed that the two tracks shared too close a similarity.

The good news is that Petty didn’t hold any hard feelings toward Sam Smith.

Petty believed that Smith was not being outright deceitful by copying the song, chalking it up to a case of subconscious plagiarism.

Remaining civil, the issue was never brought to trial.

Petty and Lynne were given a 12.5% songwriting credit for “Stay with Me.”

    Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams

Heirs of Marvin Gaye sued Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams for plagiarising Gaye’s “Got to Give it Up” in their song, “Blurred Lines.”

In 2015, Gaye’s heirs won the $7.4 million case, though it was lowered to $5.3 million afterwards.

Justin Bieber and Dan + Shay

Justin Bieber and Dan + Shay are facing legal trouble for their song ‘10,000 Hours’.

A new lawsuit has been filed against the Bieber and the duo Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney over a copyright infringement.

As per People, music company Melomega, International Manufacturing Concepts and Sound Gems sued them over the hit song.

The suit claimed that they stole the core portion of the 1973 song ‘The First Time Baby Is A Holiday,’ originally written by Palmer Rakes and Frank Fioravanti and alleged that the famous singers took the ”chorus, verse and hook” of the R&B song.

    Taylor Swift

Over the years, Taylor Swift faced major trouble for her super hit song ‘Shake It Off’, which was released in the year 2014 and went on to become a chartbuster.

Swift faced a copyright infringement lawsuit and was accused by songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler, of stealing lyrics from a 3LW song which had lines like ”The playas gon’ play” and ”Them haters gonna hate.” and Swift’s song had lines “Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play / And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.”

The first case was filed in the year 2017 but was dismissed in 2018.

Last year, the case was revived and now the case has been settled.

    Dua Lipa

British pop star Dua Lipa is facing two copyright infringement lawsuits over her super hit song ‘Lavitating’.

First is Artikal Sound System, a Florida-based reggae band, accused the singer of stealing their song and making ‘Levitating’.

They say that the 2020 hit is very close to their 2017 song ‘Live Your Life’.

And just a few days after Artikal, a pair of songwriters blamed Dua for copying their 1970s disco hit.

They claim that Levitating is “substantially similar” to the 1979 Cory Daye song ‘Wiggle and Giggle All Night’, written by L. Russell Brown and Sandy Linzer.

    Drake

Drake licensed a part of a song called “Jimmy Smith Rap” in his song “Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2.”

They claimed that Drake did not license the composition, though he licensed the master.

After several years of back and forth, the court of appeals ruled that Drake’s use of the sample is fair use as it is transformative.

Facts about Imam who saved 262 Christians during attack

On 17 July, 2019, the U.S. Department of State presented an annual award for courageous acts in upholding religious freedom anywhere in the world.

Notably, one of the five people honored with the International Religious Freedom Award is Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, the Muslim religious leader who selflessly risked his own life to save Christians who would have likely been killed without his intervention.

Four religious leaders from Sudan, Iraq, Brazil, and Cyprus along with Abdullahi were also awarded the 2019 International Religious Freedom Award. The award, as the name suggests, is given to advocates of religious freedom.

Also, Abdullahi will receive a National Honour this week. President Muhammadu Buhari will present the award to him on October 11, 2022 at the State House in Abuja.

Here are few facts about the heroic Imam Abubakar Abdullahi:

    • Imam Abdullahi was born in Bauchi State around 1936 and has lived in Nghar for 60 years.
    • After living in Nghar for 60 years, He’s leader of the Muslim community in a mosque that was built on land provided by the Christian community.
    • He was announced as one of the recipients of the 2019 US International Religious Freedom Award.
    • Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, who is Hausa and the Chief Imam of a mosque in Yelwan Gindi Akwati village, in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, alongside his assistant Umar Abdullahi, who is Fulani, saved the lives of over 200 persons when suspected bandits attacked communities in the LGA.

    • The reported attack took place on June 23, 2018, on Yelwan Gindi Akwati, Swei and Nghar villages in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, where scores of persons were killed by suspected bandits.
    • On the day of this incident, Imam Abdullahi was said to have just finished midday prayers, he and his congregation heard gunshots and went outside to see members of the town’s Christian community fleeing. Instinctively, the Imam ushered 262 of them into the mosque and into his personal home next door.
    • Abubakar Abdullahi hid 262 Berom Christians in his mosque and in his house in June 2018, when herdsmen launched a bloody attack on 10 villages in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State.
    • According to news reports, the mosque is now the home and refuge of those hidden by the Imam.
    • Many of those the Muslim Cleric provided shelter for were from the Berom ethnic group which are predominantly Christians

Many people have commended Abdullahi’s courage in the face of imminent danger and his history of outreach across religious divides as this shows his lifelong commitment to promoting interfaith understanding and peace.

However, reports gathered in 2016, suggested that Nigeria’s pastoral conflict was the cause of more deaths that year than Boko Haram. Violence between the nomadic herdsmen and farmers in Nigeria’s middle belt dates back to 2013. Hundreds of people have been killed in 2018, and the tit-for-tat violence has been ongoing for several years.

Had the imam not intervened, the death toll may have been much higher, as the armed men stormed into the mainly Muslim village in pursuit of those who had fled the mainly Christian village nearby.
