False: Global warming is not the same as climate change

    Claim

A Twitter User posted on the 19th of October 2022 that Global warming was changed to climate change.

His tweet reads: “When I was a kid, it was Global Warming. Who changed it to Climate Change?”

The tweet had 355 tweets, 85 quote tweets and 2,771 likes.

There were several comments which showed that several people misconstrued global warming to be climate change.

Below are screenshots of some of the comments in response to the tweet.

    What is Global warming?

Global warming refers to the rise in global average temperature. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) refers to Global warming as the rise in global temperatures due mainly to the increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

According to NASA’s Global Climate Change Website, Global warming” refers to the long-term warming of the planet. It states that worldwide since 1880, the average surface temperature has risen about 1 °C (about 2 °F), relative to the mid-20th century baseline (of 1951-1980). This is on top of about an additional 0.15 °C of warming from between 1750 and 1880.

Global warming is said to be an aspect of climate change.

Temperature rise is caused by an excess of greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, ozone, and water vapour) in the Earth’s atmosphere. As the level of emissions trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere continues to rise, so do global temperatures.

    What is Climate Change?

According to NASA, “Climate change” encompasses global warming, but refers to the broader range of changes that are happening to our planet. These include rising sea levels; shrinking mountain glaciers; accelerating ice melt in Greenland, Antarctica and the Arctic; and shifts in flower/plant blooming times. These are all consequences of warming, which is caused mainly by people burning fossil fuels and putting out heat-trapping gases into the air.

USGS refers to “Climate change” as the increasing changes in the measures of climate over a long period – including precipitation, temperature, and wind patterns.

This means that climate change describes how weather patterns around the world are being affected. These changes could manifest themselves in changes in climate mean values, as well as changes in extreme temperatures and precipitation.

What is the Difference Between Global Warming and Climate Change

The terms “global warming” and “climate change” are sometimes used interchangeably, but they mean separate things.

According to One Tree Planted, global warming and climate change may be used interchangeably but they are two distinct processes which cannot be separated. The website stated that both terms have been a part of the climate science lexicon for some time.

“Where global warming refers to one process (rising global temperatures due to increased greenhouse gas production), climate change encapsulates all the symptoms experienced as a result of pollution and greenhouse gas production damaging and altering our environment”, the website stated.

Global warming refers to the rise in global temperature, while climate change refers to the changes in climate patterns over time and includes several factors beyond temperature

Climate change is caused by natural and human-produced warming which is also called global warming.

According to National History Museum, climate change is the result of global warming. It states that global warming refers to how much the Earth’s surface temperature is rising, and it is the effect of this warming on average weather conditions that are known as climate change.

The origin of the terms Global warming and climate Change

One Tree Planted website gave details about the origin of global warming and climate change. According to the website, scientists have been researching the impact of burning fossil fuels and global industrialization on the planet’s climate since the 1800s.

It was stated that Swedish scientist and Nobel prize winner in chemistry Svante Arrhenius was the first to calculate the impact of increased carbon dioxide levels on global temperatures, and linked coal production and higher concentrations of atmospheric CO2, all the way back in 1896. Recognizing the connection between elevated CO2 and higher atmospheric temperatures, Arrhenius used the term ‘hothouse’ to describe the phenomenon, a term closely associated with the now more commonly used ‘greenhouse’ effect.

In the mid-1970s, geophysicist Wallace Broecker, often referred to as the grandfather of climate science, published a paper claiming the planet may be “on the brink of a pronounced global warming.”

From there, the term began picking up steam. Global warming was referenced by the National Academy of Science as well as NASA in the late 80s, and the term climate change was used to reference all the other impacts that increasing global temperatures might have on weather patterns around the world.

    Significance

The fact check is needed because several people are still confused about the terms global warming and climate change and think they are the same.

    Rating

The Claim is FALSE as “global warming” and “climate change” mean separate things but they are sometimes used interchangeably.

    Eight popular murdered rappers

  • Six tips to recover from business setbacks

Six tips to recover from business setbacks

Every business has its ups and down and that’s why only a risk-taker ventures into business. For a business suffering setback, here are six tips to recover from it:

    *Accept your situation

Stop wallowing in your despair and embrace reality as the first step toward financial recovery. The most crucial thing is that it doesn’t matter anymore. There is no going back; what’s done is done. It is pointless to exert effort in useless resistance to what has already come to pass. Recognize reality. Living in the past just makes moving ahead more challenging. Accept the setback, let it go, and make a commitment to moving forward instead.

    *Take inventory

Take stock of your existing circumstances as the second step toward financial recovery. When creating a plan to recover from disaster, you must be aware of the assets you have and the risks you face. Before you can create a practical strategy to achieve where you want to go in the future, you must first understand where you are right now.

It’s the same as using a road map to determine your course to a location. Find your current location on the map before planning the route to your destination.

    *State your goals

The third step in your financial recovery plan is to define your objective or goal. You must determine where you want to go financially. Staying with our road-map analogy, this step is akin to locating your end destination on the map.

    *Develop your plan

After outlining plans, it’s pertinent to with towards them. Once you have a laid down plans, it’s only attainable when you put in the effort to bring into reality

    *Take action

Having reached the aforementioned stages in the process of recovering from a setback in business, it’s important to take actions that will yield positive outcome for the business again

Six fruits you probably didn’t know their names

We grew up relishing so many fruits without particularly knowing their real names, as such, names were coined or simply invented for these fruits.

Yet, that doesn’t rule out the fact that these fruits have their real names which many are unaware of.

    Below are five of such fruits we enjoy in Nigeria that you probably didn’t know their real names;

African/Black Velvet Tamarind aka ‘Licki Licki’

African/Black Velvet Tamarind aka ‘Licki Licki’

The black velvet tamarind or African velvet tamarind is the fruit of a native West African tree (Dialium guineense) cultivated not for its fruits but as a source of timber and fuel.

“Icheku”, “Ncheleku”, as this fruit is called by the Igbo people of south-eastern Nigeria, has an orange-colored pulp that has a sweet and sour taste and a dry powdery texture.

The fruit is also called “Awin” by the Yoruba, “Tsamiyar kurm” by the Hausa in Nigeria while it is on the street it’s generally called ‘licki licki’.

In Nigeria, Velvet tamarind is a very popular fruit snack, particularly among children, who peel the black velvet case to reveal an orange pulp that is eaten raw.

Black velvet tamarind is rich in vitamins including thiamin, vitamin A, folic acid, niacin, riboflavin, and the most important is vitamin C

    Tropical/ Sea Almonds aka ‘fruit’

    Tropical/ Sea Almonds aka ‘fruit’

Tropical almonds or sea almonds are popularly called “fruit” in Nigeria that contain certain minerals which are very important to human health because they serve as cofactors for many metabolic processes in the body.

These fruits contain several minerals and vitamins that perform essential functions and add nutritional values that contribute positively to healthy living.

At its initial stage, they are green in color and then yellow and eventually become red when ripe. On the other hand, full-sized fruits are green at their first stage, turn red, then brown then again becomes yellow at maturity, however, it contains only one seed

They are 2 inches or more long and 1 inch across. At its young stage the plump and stringy pulp surrounding the large seed is safe to eat and tastes sweet and then slightly sour thereafter. There is a light brown, thick and hard stone inside the shell and it contains an almond-like kernel that is also edible.

African Cherry / Star Apples aka ‘Agbalumo’

African Cherry / Star Apples aka ‘Agbalumo’

The exotic fruit, among the Hausa and Yoruba speaking tribe, the fruit is called Agbalumo,’ while the Igbo call it ‘Udara.’

African cherry/star apple has a chewable edible skin that ranges in colour from green to orange, depending on the stage of ripeness.

The tender, sweet inner flesh is off-white with seeds making the inner to look like a star-shaped fruit. This obviously shows where it got the nickname ‘star apple’.

It has a star shape formed by seeds through the middle of the fruit. The beautiful seasonal fruit can be gotten mostly everywhere in Nigeria towards the end of November till later in March when it would have gone out of season.

Star apples (African cherry) serve as a good source of calcium, with each serving providing you with 10 percent of the amount you require each day.

The calcium lends strength to your bones and teeth, and it may also lessen symptoms of premenstrual syndrome such as cramping and abdominal bloating.

This fruit also contains 5 percent of the daily recommended value per serving of vitamin C and vitamin A.

    Rose Apples

    Rose Apples

The rose apple which is simply referred to as ‘apple’ isn’t like the ordinary apple, in fact, they belong to the same family as apricots, plums, cherries, peaches, pears, raspberries and almonds.

Unripe rose apples have a bright green colour while the ripe ones are pink in colour or a combination of ink and white.

It is a nutrient-dense fruit that provides the body with vitamin A, C, E, fiber, potassium, copper, fiber and iron.

It is also rich in non-nutritive substances like polyphenols. All these nutrients work together to keep the body healthy and prevent many illnesses. So, there may be some truth to that old phrase,

The consumption of rose apples has many health benefits. In India, this fruit is regarded as a tonic for the brain and liver. It is beneficial for those that are suffering from diabetes.

The street name for this beautiful fruit is called ‘shawashop’ on the streets of Nigeria.

The fruits, which grow on trees, are large and oval-shaped. The green exterior, which has spines on it, covers a white, fibrous flesh.

They grow up to 8 inches and can weigh up to 10 pounds. Soursop’s flavour can best be described a cross between mango and pineapple

Soursop contains many essential vitamins and minerals, including: vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin C, folate, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorous, zinc, copper.

    Oriental/Korean Melon

    Oriental/Korean Melon

A small yellow melon with deep white stripes and white interior flesh with small, edible white seeds.

The fruit tastes like a cross between honeydew and cucumber with the crisp texture of a cucumber.

It is noticeably less sweet than Western varieties of melon, and consists of about 90% water.

The fruits are commonly eaten fresh; with its thin rind and small seeds, the melon can be eaten whole.

One of the most popular fruits in South Korea, Oriental/Korean melons, also known as honeydew melons is a surprisingly small palm-sized fruits that are low in calories and high in nutritional value.

From repairing your bone health to giving your skin a rich glow, these fruits are very beneficial for us as they contain; calories, protein, dietary fibre, vitamin C, sodium, calcium, iron, sugar and carbohydrates.

Seven top coys that dumped Kanye West over anti-semitic comments

Controversial US rapper, Kanye West, has been at the receiving end of heated backlash over his recent anti-semitic comments.

In a series of anti-semitic rants on social media, West had alleged that the Jews controlled Hollywood and vowed to “go Defcon 3” on the Jewish people, apparently referring to the military readiness condition and also debuted “White Lives Matter” t-shirts at his Yeezy Season 9 show during Paris Fashion Week on Oct. 3, 2022.

His actions sparked outrage and increased public pressure on the companies with whom the rapper has business dealings to sever ties with him.

    Here are seven top firms that dumped Kanye West over his anti-semitic remarks;

    *Adidas

The sportswear brand cut ties with the rapper on Tuesday after conducting a “thorough review” of his anti-semitic comments.

The company announced that it would immediately cease business with Ye.

“Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech. Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness,” according to a statement from the German company.

The announcement by the sportswear company took a huge blow to the rapper’s financial standing and stripped him of his billionaire status.

Adidas estimates ending this partnership will cost it 250 million euros ($248 million) in net income this year. His Yeezy line brought in an estimated $2 billion a year, which accounted for nearly 10 percent of the annual Adidas revenue.

    *Balenciaga

On October 21, Balenciaga, the top fashion brand, also announced it had cut ties with the rapper over his remarks. He had worked with the French company to create a line for Gap.

    *Gap

Ye made the move to separate from the clothing brand in September, according to the Associated Press.

In mid-september, Kanye repeatedly took a swipe at the retail company on Instagram while announcing his intention to terminate their contract.

But on Tuesday, Gap took the extra step of announcing that it was ending its Yeezy Gap line of products.

“Our former partner’s recent remarks and behavior further underscore why. We are taking immediate steps to remove Yeezy Gap products from our stores,” according to a company statement.

    *JP Morgan Chase Bank

JPMorgan Chase Bank was one of the first companies to sever its ties with Kanye in early October. The major financial institution informed the rapper in a letter that they were ending their banking relationship with him.

Conservative activist, Candance Owens, who is a friend of Ye, shared an alleged letter from the financial institution on her Twitter account informing the Chicago rapper to take his money elsewhere.

Reports have suggested that JPMorgan Chase was dissolving their relationship with Ye due to his anti-Semitic remarks.

    *Vogue

Fashion and lifestyle magazine, Vogue, reportedly severed their long and close relationship with Kanye on Oct. 21, 2022. Its Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour, have no intentions of working with Kanye again due to his anti-Semitic remarks and White Lives Matter agenda. According to Page 6ix.

Their announcement also comes after Kanye attacked one of their editors, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, who criticized him for wearing a White Lives Matter t-shirt at his Paris fashion show.

    *CAA

On October 24, the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), who started representing West’s tours in 201,  ended its contract with the music mogul, citing a similar reason for its decision.

    *Footlocker

The sneaker retailer announced that it would not stock Yeezy products going forward and asked employees to hold them in stores’ backrooms pending further instruction on October 21.

“Foot Locker, Inc. does not tolerate any form of antisemitism, or hateful and discriminatory behavior,” the company said in a statement. “While we remain a partner with Adidas and carry a wide assortment of their collections — we will not be supporting any future Yeezy product drops, and we have instructed our retail operators to pull any existing product from our shelves and digital sites.”

Exercising helps to strengthen your muscles, reduce some health risks, and keep you active. You could sign up at the gym, go cycling, jogging every morning, or just take long walks. This helps to replenish your energy, leaving you refreshed and more productive than ever.

    Run errands

Your leave is the perfect opportunity to finally run all the errands you’ve been postponing because of work. Now is the right time to finally sort out the laundry, do some deep cleaning, clear out your garage, or go grocery shopping.

    Self reflection

Not a lot of people know but your leave is also a time for introspection. It is a time to reflect on your past work and to find a way to do better going forward. It is also a time to consider ways to improve yourself and handle situations better.

    Volunteer

Spend your leave being a part of events you love or have always been interested in, but never had the time for. Volunteering provides you the opportunity to impact and add value to your society. This way, you get the sense of working not just earn money, but to change lives.

    Visit fun places

One of the best ways to maximise the duration of your leave is to visit fun places such as tourist centres, cinemas, the beach, the mall, museums, etc. In fact, if you can afford it, visit other countries. Travelling is one sure way to relax and make memories.

    Learn a skill

Your leave is a great opportunity to pick up a new skill. This skill doesn’t necessarily have to be useful to your current job. It may just be a hobby you want to indulge in or an interest you’ve picked up that is completely outside your work confines. It could be baking, painting, cooking, knitting, or even learning a new language.
