  • Five things to consider before cosmetic surgery

Five things to consider before cosmetic surgery

Cosmetic surgery has become common among celebrities. You may also want to consider it. Here are five things to tick before you do:

    * Conduct research

Have you taken the time to thoroughly investigate the operation you wish to have before you hurry to make an appointment? The best course of action is to learn as much as you can about the desired technique. This includes being aware of the operation’s name, what it truly comprises, if it will provide the desired result, and whether it is the right method for the body area you wish to increase.

*Background check on your surgeon’s experience.

You need to be sure you are in safe hands before having cosmetic surgery because there are many potential problems. Make sure your plastic surgeon has Board of Plastic Surgery certification.

    *The price

It is common knowledge that cosmetic surgery is not inexpensive. Find more about financing options if price is a problem. You must honestly assess your ability to pay for plastic surgery, whether you are financing it or paying cash. If you spend money on plastic surgery, will other aspects of your life suffer greatly? This is particularly accurate if you are paying for your procedure. Are you prepared to continue paying for your surgery even after you have recovered? Even if the outcome is not precisely what you intended or if there is a problem, you will still be required to pay.

*Familiarise yourself with dangers and challenges

You need to be aware of any potential risks associated with the specific procedure(s) you are having. Any surgical operation carries a risk, and you should be fully informed of all the hazards before deciding to have the procedure. Another concern is that even with excellent technique or what a plastic surgeon would consider a favorable outcome, you could not be satisfied with the outcome.

*Look up reviews and get referrals from others.

To have cosmetic surgery, you must be in good health. Make sure your plastic surgeon is aware of all relevant medical information. If you conceal health issues, such as high blood pressure, your plastic surgeon cannot provide an appropriate evaluation. Prior to surgery, make an effort to maintain the best physical health possible. Consider delaying surgery until after you have finished having children and are through breastfeeding for the greatest results.

  • 11 strange things you find on typical Lagos roads

11 strange things you find on typical Lagos roads

Lagos State (Ìpínlẹ̀ Èkó) aka Eko akete or Lasgidi, the most populous and smallest in area among the 36 States of Nigeria, is inhabited by various indigenous ethnic groups and foreign nationals alike.

The metropolitan city blessed with diversities makes it all the more ‘interesting’, from spending long hours in traffic to the many strange things you feed your eyes with while you endure ‘go-slow.’

Here are what to expect on Lagos roads, especially when using public transportation.

    *Drivers eating while driving

Particularly commercial bus drivers, you find some of them eating while driving. One would think only passengers indulge in this act but no, they also too.

Especially when they’re in ‘go-slow’. They move a little, stop, reach out for their take away pack on their laps or what have you, and take a couple of spoonful’s or bites. Then continue when the traffic begins to move again.

*A motorist stopping on the road to urinate

This happens not just with commercial bus drivers but also private car owners. It’s not uncommon to find one who stops while in traffic to empty their bowels.

Eventually when the traffic eases up, others have to wait and continue blaring their horns for him to get into his car, move so they can also move.

    * Irritating habit of passengers eating on the bus

A passenger eating several things, from corn to biscuits and all sorts. After which she reaches for her head net, brings out a nylon containing different currencies…then picks out a N10/20 note, folds it and use the sharp edge created to pick her teeth.

After which, she washes same down with a sachet of water aka pure water.

*’Agbero’ demanding that conductor should ‘san wo’

It has become a norm to see roadside touts aka agbero struggling with a bus conductor to ‘san owo’.

Most times they engage in a tussle with the conductors’ to get their ‘dues’ but just as the conductor continues to resist them, the agbero in some situation stretches out the cane in his hand and lands it on conductor’s buttocks.

One almost lost grip of the roof of the vehicle he held unto when this happened to him because of the pain that was inflicted on him from the agbero’s ‘weapon of pain’. Tears rolled down his cheeks causing some passengers to burst into laughter and other cursing at the wicked agbero.

However, some agberos go ahead to break off the bus side mirror….others could take an attachment in form of a seat, or simply destroy anything within their reach as the driver attempts to zoom off.

*Picking conductor’s money without giving it back

At the bus stop, money falls from the conductor’s hand unknowingly but then, a passerby stylishly kicks the money away from the conductor, spits on it immediately picks it up but doesn’t give it to the conductor.

He however, immediately shoves it into his pocket and continues walking.

*Driver stops the bus to play ‘baba ijebu’

This sound sorely unbelievable but true…a public bus driver stops the bus abruptly on the road, jumps out from the front wheel leaving the passengers without any sort of explanation just to go and bet with ‘Baba ijebu.’

He returns with some passenger yelling at him and cursing his ancestors but he shrugs off their entire outburst, apologises and says, ‘you cannot have one source of income.’

*Motorist stops by causing a buildup of traffic just to buy bread

Yes, I’ve seen this happen a thousand times when a motorist suddenly takes a stop by at the favourite bread seller’s spot on a narrow road that can barely accommodate another vehicle beside just to buy a loaf of their favourite bread for the entire family.

*Those rushing to board a bus but actually pickpockets

This happens almost every other day among persons who rush to board buses either in the early mornings as they hurry up to their various offices or market places or in the evenings when they are returning home.

Some pickpockets disguised as passengers wait by the bus stop with other genuine passengers and when a bus stops to drop off some passengers and pick up others, they pretend like they also want to get on the bus.

But no, they are after valuables and money so they reach out to the easy target carting away things from people who have legitimately gone out to hustle only for those ones to realise their missing effects after successfully boarding the bus which has since moved.

*Annoying mode of sitting by men mostly especially when a lady is right beside them

While on a public bus, you find people seated in varying ways. Particularly the men, when they sit beside a lady, the position their hand to rest on her lap or hips.

Others would have their elder digging into her sides, around her waist region or even brushing the side of her breast.

Some will doze off and then, whether knowingly or unknowingly, in minutes you’ll find their head titling to the shoulder of the lady beside them till they even rest on it.

*Battling to sane with intense body odour(s) plus farts

While on a public bus, it’s best you have a good oil perfume handy because your sanity will be tested.

If it’s not from the conductor, it could be from one work man or any other human that may be seated right in front of you of beside.

You are bound to perceive body odours emanating from different quarter and if you’re not well equipped, with perfumes to douse the stench, those minutes you would need to spend there would be excruciatingly disgusting and certainly unforgettable it in a bad way.

On the other hand, when it’s not body odour, you might just be bombarded with stench from some ‘sick’ human’s farts.

Trust me, only the strong and brave hearted board public vehicles and manage to come out unruffled and sane somehow.

*Buying items from sellers in traffic without payment

This happens mostly when people get stuck in traffic. They may crave water due to dehydration or any other thing they may desire at that time which would warrant them to look out for those who hawk various things on the road.

Oftentimes, the passengers withhold their money though stretched out as they wait for the hawker to give them ‘change’ before handing over the money to them.

But several times, it never goes as planned as the traffic could suddenly just ease off in that instance and the driver would speedily zoom off leaving the hawker at loss for his goods and sometimes change he would have handed to the buyer without having collected his money.

On the flip side, the passenger who doesn’t mind giving the hawker money before they’re given ‘change’ could also end up losing his money when such happens.

  • Five famous countries where women marry multiple husbands

Five famous countries where women marry multiple husbands

While most countries only allow monogamous and polygamous marriages, a few cultures around the world allow polyandry, which allows a woman to marry more than one man.

It is not uncommon for men to have more than one wife, and many cultural practices and religions around the world support the practice.

It is, however, unusual to hear of a woman who has multiple husbands. Polyandry is a type of polygamy in which a woman has two or more husbands at once.

    Here is a list of countries that practice polyandry;

    1. India

Polyandry is practiced by Paharis in the Jaunsarbawar region of North India, and a minority of people in Kinnaur, Himachal, justify and practice it.

As descendants of the Pachi Pandavas (five brothers who were husbands to a woman named Draupadi daughter of King Panchala), they believe they have to carry on the tradition. Polyandry is also practiced by the Toda tribe of Nilgiris, the Najanad Vellala of Travancore, and some Nair caste systems in South India.

In 1988, Tibet University conducted a survey of 753 Tibetan families and discovered that 13% practiced polyandry.

    2. Kenya

While polyandry isn’t explicitly prohibited or forbidden under the law in Kenya, it is a common practice. Polyandry marriage was first reported in Kenya in 2013, when two men decided to marry a woman they both adored.

The bride couldn’t decide which man she wanted, so it was a good excuse to marry all three of them. There have also been reports of polyandry among Kenya’s Massai people.

In August 2013, two Kenyan men entered into an agreement to marry a woman with whom they had both been having an affair.

    3. China

In modern day China, Tibet is a region covering much of the Tibetan Plateau. It is the traditional homeland of the Tibetan people as well as some other ethnic groups such as Monpa, Tamang, Qiang, Sherpa, and Lhoba peoples and is now also inhabited by considerable numbers of Han Chinese and Hui people.

Tibet people in the past, practiced fraternal polyandry. The woman in the scenario might not tell the husband which child belongs to whom in order not to create any problems or issues in their family.

However, the Tibet Autonomous Region government in 1981 ceased to tolerate new polyandry marriages under family law.

It is now illegal to practise such in Tibet but research has shown that it still happens in the rural areas.

Currently, polyandry is present in all Tibetan areas, but particularly common in some rural regions of Tsang and Kham that are faced with extreme living conditions.

A 2008 study of several villages in Xigaze and Qamdo prefectures found that 20-50% of the families were polyandric, with the majority having two husbands. For some remote settlements, the number was as high as 90%. Polyandry is very rare among urban residents or non-agricultural households.

    4. Nepal

Nepal is a landlocked South Asian country. It is primarily located in the Himalayas, but it also includes portions of the Indo-Gangetic Plain.

Polygamy has been officially prohibited in Nepal since 1963, but people in the Humla, Dolpa, and Kosi regions value their traditions far more than the law. There are entire villages of polyandrous families here.

This type of marriage is also common among tribes in Nepal’s north and north-east, including the Bhote, Sherpa, Newbie, and others.

    5. Gabon

Both men and women can join in polygamous marriage with the other gender under Gabonese law. In practice, the right to multiple spouses is reserved for men only.

In may 2021, a Gabonese woman showed off her seven husbands and explained how she manages to live with them without having issues.

  • Five rules to dealing with your partner’s side chick

Five rules to dealing with your partner’s side chick

A mistress often referred to as the ‘side chick’ in Nigeria is any other woman in your partner’s life especially one with whom he engages in s3xual activity and every other stuff he should only be doing with you.

Surprisingly a good number of married men in this clime have one or two side chicks with the excuse of ‘men are polygamous in nature.

Some even go ahead to say things like, ‘you get tired of eating one particular dish so you need to have something different at some point.

Others would say, ‘we are only trying to help the number of side ladies’ and many other absurd things they get say.

Below are five rules you must adhere to in dealing with your spouse’s side chick or hen:

    * Carry out a proper investigation about your partner’s side chick

Be sure your partner is really cheating on you by carrying out due investigation on the matter.

It’ll be the greatest injustice to your spouse to confront him over allegations of extramarital affairs when in truth nothing of such exists.

And yes, if really he has a side chick, get facts about her, what she looks like, how she met your partner how deep they’re involved and so on. This is just in a bid to arm yourself with sound proof that your man is being unfaithful.

    * Resist the temptation of confronting the side chick

This is one thing most women get wrong. They go confrontational with their man’s side chick which should never be.

As a matter of fact, you really have no business with the side chick, the one who needs ‘talking to’ is your man.

    * Subtly confront your partner about the matter

In a subtle manner, inform your partner you know about his affair with proof. Whatever his responses, ensure you have your emotions under control. As this isn’t the time to allow it get the better part of you.

If he denies the act despite the glaring evidence you have presented, you must still stay and peradventure he accepts; you need to inquire why he chose that part and talk things out.

    * In-between seek marriage counseling

At this point, to help your mental state, it’s best you speak with a marriage counselor and any other expert to health your sanity.

If you are very interested in keeping your marriage as a result of the love you may have for your spouse, it’s best he’s also involved in the counseling section.

There you both are able to pour out your minds to a marriage expert who suggests and chart a course on how to go about revamping your union if possible.

    * Make a decision

Depending on your partner’s reaction after a counseling section if he shows signs of turning a new life, that means you both are on the part to reliving to good times again without a third party. But you must be sure that’s what you truly want and what would give you genuine happiness.

However, if he shows no sign of being remorseful, you would need to take a seat back and possibly move away from the house and possibly seek a divorce if the union is irredeemable.

But should you decide to stay back while you hope for a change, you would need to protect yourself by avoiding unprotected intercourse with him; that’s if you even have to at all. Ensure you undergo a medical checkup to check for any STI, STD and get treatment if needed.

Six housemates disqualified from BBNaija so far

It is the dream of every applicant of the BBNaija to be selected for the Reality show as it translates to instant fame even if a housemate is the first to be evicted from the show. That shows how popularly the Big Brother Reality TV show is.

After being selected and inducted, Housemates familiarise themselves with a list of house rules to which they must abide by during their entire stay in the house. But rules can be fragile and careless housemates easily break them.

Fortunately, breaking one rule in the Big Brother’s house is not usually enough to send the offender packing immediately. Housemates are issued strikes for every time they break a rule – some rules are too negligible and the offender might get off with just an ordinary warning from Big Brother.

But for the case of strikes, every housemate can only survive two strikes during their stay in the house, receiving a third strike will mean instant disqualification from the show.

Disqualified housemates are made to exit the show from the backdoor and are not allowed to grant interviews or talk to the live audience. Disqualified BBNaija housemates will also not receive any money or other prizes they have won from their participation in the house tasks.

Here is the list of housemates that have been disqualified from the BBNaija reality TV show so far:

    · Kemen

Ex-BBNaija housemate Kemen opened the door of disqualifications in recent seasons of Big Brother after his disqualification in 2017. On Sunday, March 5, 2017, Kemen, a Portharcourt-based fitness entrepreneur, was disqualified from the BBNaija Season 2 reality TV show tagged “See Gobe” for sexually touching female co-housemate Tboss without her consent while she was asleep. In a series of interviews, BBNaija Kemen whose real name is Ekemini Ekerette has maintained that the event did not happen as was depicted on TV.

    · Khloe and K-Brule

BBNaija ‘Double Wahala’ housemates Khloe and K-Brule were evicted from the BBNaija Season 3 reality TV show as a pair in 2018. The housemates were paired in teams of two in that season of Big Brother. Khloe and K-Brule who were a team were disqualified after they earned their third strike for bad behaviour.

The duo got their first strike when K. Brule got drunk and jumped from the first floor of the BBNaija house. They got another strike when Khloe called K-Brule’s mother a whore on live TV.

The altercation apparently started when K-Brule tried to kiss co-housemate Leo, and Leo told Khloe about this. Khloe who was the head of house then went to confront K-Brule and in the process, she called K-Brule’s mother a whore. K-Brule threatened to physically harm Khloe, almost hitting her, but was restrained by other housemates. The two received their third strikes for the fight and were ejected out of the show.

    · Tacha

Tacha’s disqualification from the BBNaija Season 4 reality TV show tagged “Pepper Dem” drew the biggest attention probably because she was a strong contender in the show before her disqualification. Tacha was disqualified from the show in 2019 following her infamous fight with co-housemate and rival Mercy Eke.

After their fight, Tacha was disqualified while Mercy was issued two strikes. For pushing, shoving and also pulling Mercy’s hair, Tacha was found guilty of physical violence and intent to harm and was disqualified.

    · Erica

Erica who had already received two strikes and a “final warning” from Big Brother was disqualified from the 2020 BBNaija Lockdown show on Sunday, September 6, 2020. Erica’s offences that led to her disqualification include denying the deputy head of house (Prince) access to the head of house lounge, pouring water on the bed of head of house lounge, peeping through the windows and trying to talk to the camera crew and bullying co-housemate Laycon.

    · Beauty

BBNaija Levelup housemate Beauty Tukura is the latest housemate to join the list of disqualified housemates from the reality TV show. Beauty was disqualified for fighting fellow housemate Groovy over claims he danced with Chomzy.

Her disqualification came after she was issued a double strike on Sunday, less than an hour before Sunday’s live eviction show.

  • INVESTIGATION: UNTOLD STORY OF NIGERIA’S OIL PRODUCING COMMUNITIES BATTLING POOR HEALTH SYSTEM

INVESTIGATION: UNTOLD STORY OF NIGERIA’S OIL PRODUCING COMMUNITIES BATTLING POOR HEALTH SYSTEM

Access to quality healthcare is one of the nightmares of communities in Ilaje local government area of Ondo State. Despite the revitalization plan for Primary Health Centers in Nigeria, oil-producing communities in Ilaje suffer neglect. In this report, ADESOLA IKULAJOLU risked a journey to visit different Primary Health Centers in ILAJE and document the plights of the residents.

When Festus Monday, 25years-old visited Ilaje community, a coastal area in Ondo State, in November 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, he was expecting to see residents comply with the precautionary measures of wearing face mask, physical distancing and use of hand sanitizer. With disappointment all over his face upon discovering that he was the only person wearing a face mask around during his stay in the area, Festus was compelled to pull off his face mask.

“I was surprised to see people not bothered about COVID-19 but when I saw that I was the odd one, I pulled off my face mask so they wouldn’t stare at me like a stranger.”

                                 [Ilaje visual illustrated map]

The communities he visited were Mese, Gbagira, Molutehin, Odofado, Ilowo, Ilepete, Oju-Imole, Awoye, Obenla, Ogungbeje, and Ayetoro; they are oil-producing areas on the riverine area of Ondo State which also connects to the Atlantic Ocean.

As at the end of November 2020, figures according to the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) showed that Nigeria had  67,557 cases, 1173 deaths and 63,282 discharged; Ondo State recorded 1,728 cases at that time. It was an increasing number, yet Festus said residents of the Ilaje communities he visited were not bothered “neither were they complying with the safety guidelines and these communities don’t even have hospitals nor functional health facilities.”

“When the world was battling COVID-19, these communities in Ilaje had no access to health information. All the health centers in that area are in dilapidated form, they are not working. How would they even detect any health disease? The people are the ones treating themselves with traditional medicine since there are no health personnel to treat them.”

“They have abandoned all the healthcenters, they can not treat ordinary sickness and not all of them will have money to travel to a hospital in another place to receive medical treatment. Who knows how many people might have even died from this ugly situation besieging the people of these communities,” Festus lamented to this reporter.

Twenty months later, in company of Festus, this reporter visited some of these Ilaje communities battling poor health systems. Ilaje, one of the largest oil producing communities in Nigeria with an estimated population of 391,200, with diverse inhabitants whose means of livelihood is fishing and farming.

From what began with a long journey on the 10th of June, from the State capital, Akure, through Ore- Ondo State’s industrial center, reaching Igbokoda, the headquarter of Ilaje Local Government.  Few hours from Igbokoda, another journey began from Ugbo-Nla, from where all visitors and inhabitants can access the communities using boats. All around the busy seashore were children, women and men going about their businesses while the boats were loading and offloading passengers.

    Staff Shortage, No Medicine

Tophas, in his early 30s, visited the health center in Molutehin community to complain about a condition he was battling with but he was referred to the hospital in igbokoda. He was neither given medicines nor asked to undergo any form of test to ascertain what he was complaining about. Since Tophas was unable to visit the hospital they referred him to because of the distance, he resorted to self-medication.

“When we go to the health center, they refer us to Igbokoda. The health center in Odu-Oretan has no doctor. The one at Molutehin, once they work small, they close. If not for God saving us and that our people here are strong, they would have been dying untimely,” Tophas said.

On June 11, this reporter visited the Molutehin PHC in company of Festus who went to complain about chest pain and stomach upset resulting from the borehole water he drank. The only nurse available on duty that day at the health center asked Festus to sit for more than ten minutes while she attended to another patient. There were no other health officials at the healthcenter.

When Festus requested for drug to suppress his pain, the young female nurse identified as Odunayo said “there is no drug on ground but I will write the prescription for you to buy, the doctors only come here once a while.” There was also no vitamin C to give Festus.

Josiah Olusegun is one out of the many residents of Ilepete community who said they “can not rely on the health center because they will say no drug. When we go to this health center to complain, they will say government did not give them drug and sometimes we won’t meet anyone to attend to us.”

This reporter visited Ilepete Primary Health Center located at the opposite side of the community with Festus disguised to be battling a sore throat. That evening, at the health center, there were two female nurses. After listening to the complaint of Festus, one of the nurses referred him to Igbokoda for an X-ray.

“No doctor here, we only have nurses. There is no medicine that we give you because only X-ray can tell us what to do and that will be in Igbokoda,” Ms. Pelumi, one of the nurses said.

Residents also revealed that they are at the mercy of “quack” health attendants and chemists within the community. Meanwhile, communities like Mese, Gbagira, Awoye and Odofado also have similar predicament.

“There is no hospital here to treat anyone. We are always running helter-skelter to save ourselves. Those who have money struggle to take their people to Igbokada and some even die before getting to Ugbonla for emergency treatment. The distance between Igbokoda is too far from us,” Mr. Monday Adebanwo, a resident of Gbagira lamented.

Data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) stated that the patient-to-doctor ratio in Nigeria is 2500:1 which is four times higher than the WHO recommendation of 600:1.

In Ilowo And Odu-Oretan: Facilities Underlock, Doctors Unavailable

The PHC at Odu-Oretan community is surrounded by stagnant water and bushes. At the entrance of the Health center is a wooden walkway that leads to the door of the deserted building, but the facility was underlock with no health officials available.

A source who spoke to this reporter, said the doctor, one Mr. Blessing Ogungbeje at the PHC locked the facility and transferred some of the equipment for personal use. This reporter also observed an abandoned building already collapsing beside the Odu-Oretan PHC- source said it was to house a new health facility but neglected halfway.

“Only one doctor is here, all the nurses have left because they said they cannot survive in the community. One doctor here is taking all the drugs away from the health center to go sell for personal use, he locked the government health center,” the source told this reporter.

At Ilowo, the facility housing the Primary Health Center has been outgrown by bushes and put underlock. A resident said the doctors are not always around and they have to resort to self-medication. When this reporter visited the PHC, there were no health officials available.

Mrs Adeyin Ibiola lamented that the closure of the Ilowo PHC is making other residents seek after “quack doctors” and traditional means in the community while those who have money travel to Igbokoda hospital on their own.

“If our children have any sickness, we apply traditional means, since the health center is locked and doesn’t even have enough medicines. The pregnant women go to healthcenter, but most of them resort to the traditional way. Anyone who has the money will quickly go to Igbokoda. Hospital is not supposed to close. What if there is emergency”

    Failed PHCs’ Revitalisation Plan

President Muhammadu Buhari, in January 2017,  flagged off a scheme to revitalise 10,000 PHCs across the country to create qualitative and affordable health services for poor Nigerians. The revitalisation plan was to make at least one PHC fully functional in each of the wards across 109 senatorial districts of the country through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA).

The NPHCDA guideline requires that a standard PHC should have a labour room, office and staff quarters, well open ward, children and female wards, ambulance for referrals, preventive and basic curative care, drugs and equipment for immunisation. But the PHCs in Ilowo, Ilepete, Molutehin, Odu-Oretan, Gbagira and Odofado are far from these requirements.

This investigations revealed that despite the annual allocations of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) to strengthen, provide access and emergency medical treatment, PHCs are largely underequipped and nonfunctional. The federal government initiated a N28 billion health fund in December 2017, to revitalise PHCs, but the impact of such allocation is not felt in Ilaje communities.

In Ondo State, there are a total of 811 health facilities. Of this number, 95 % (769) are Primary Health Care facilities, 40 are Secondary Health Care facilities and 2 are tertiary health care facilities. Of the 769 PHC facilities, 60% (460) are public owned. The remaining 309 or 40% are private providers. At the secondary health care level, 48% (19 ) of 40 health facilities are public owned while 21 (52%) are privately owned. The two tertiary health facilities in the State are public owned.

Ilaje has 31 health facilities available with 26 public-owned PHCs, 3 private-owned PHCs, 1 public-owned secondary health facility and 1 private-owned secondary health facility making it rank 11th out of 18 LGAs.

In a report published by SBM Morgen, the 36 states spent an average of 4.65% of budgets on healthcare in 2021 which is a decrease to 11% in 2020. Ondo State was among the only two states whose healthcare budget was more than 10% in 2021 which is a proof of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s commitment to provide access to health, but the impact is not reflecting in some Ilaje communities.

Bababo Ikuemonisan, an advocate and indigene of Ilaje has challenged the Ondo State government to come to the aid of the people and not neglect their communities in terms of healthcare.

“Lack of a standardized health system for the riverine people in Ilaje will necessitate rushing of sick patients to faraway Owo, Akure or Ondo. Some of these patients die before reaching the hospitals in the hinterlands. A state-of-the-art hospital should be built where people can access and all PHCs should be well equipped,” he said.

We prefer traditional birth method- Women

According to UNICEF data, Nigeria have under-five mortality rate of 113.8 per 1,000 live births; infant mortality rate is 72 per 1,000 live births;  only 35% of children under age 5 have their births registered.

World Health Organisation (WHO) highlighted that Nigeria accounts for over 34% of global maternal deaths. Figures show a maternal mortality  rate of 576 per 100,000 live births, fourth highest in the world.

Atike Faroye is one of the oldest traditional birth attendants (Agbebi) in Ilepete community, pregnant women from nearby communities visit him for childbearing or during pregnancy complications. The over 70yrs-old man said he has delivered more than 400 births within and outside his community. Faroye lamented that he delivers more than four births in a week but some of them pay N500 while some cannot even afford it.

“I didn’t learn this work from anyone. There is traditional medicine we give pregnant women to help their pathway open and some will even give birth on the way since they have used their medicine well. The health center here use to bring people to my place- they can not handle birth delivery because there are no midwives. At night, when they bring pregnant women, we deliver them here,” Faroye told this reporter.

When Mrs Adeyin wanted to give birth to her first child in her twenties, her preference was the traditional birth attendant due to her belief, what she inherited from her parents and the inaccessibility of health centers.

Another woman from Ogungbeje community told this reporter that “rather than go for antenatal care at the health center, they prefer to visit the traditional birth attendants.”

She added that hardly will pregnant women decide to go to the health center because of the fear of being neglected and mostly no means of transportation during emergencies.

This reporter observed that there were neither midwives in all of the health centers nor were there any ambulances to convey patients when there is emergency.

We are not aware- officials react

The agency in charge of all the PHCs in Ondo State is the Ondo State Primary Health Care Development Board (OSPHCDB) with the aim to make quality basic health care available and accessible to every citizen regardless of their status. OSPHCDB is one of the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) under the Ondo State Ministry of Health.

This reporter reached out to the Permanent Secretary of ONDOSPHDB, Dr Francis Akanbiemu, to confirm if he is aware of the findings that health facilities in Ilowo and Odu-Oretan are under lock.

“I am not aware of that, maybe you have to call the PCH coordinator. I oversee the local governments, we have over 600 health centers and there is no way I will be at all the places at the same time.  The best person to call is the PHC in Ilaje – his name is Dr Ayelaje. There is no way I can confirm because I am not a machine, there is no way I can be in all the health centers at the same time- no health is supposed to be underlock and key. We have a PHC authority in Ondo state, each of them headed by the Medical officer, they are the one that directly supervises what happens in those health facilities.”

He noted that he is not aware if the health facility in Odu-Oretan is under lock but highlighted that an investigation will be conducted.

Dr Francis added that after the investigation, “whoever is found wanting will be punished, we don’t cover anybody who does not do well. We have to document your findings, because if we want to punish anybody for doing wrong, you have to provide evidence.”

In another conversation, the PHC coordinator in ILAJE through the Permanent Secretary revealed that the health facility in Ilowo has been taken over by OSOPADEC. But he was silent on the status of the Odu-Oretan’s facility.

“We don’t lock our facilities, what he made me to believe that the Ilowo PHC has been taken over by OSOPADEC and they refuse to work with the PHC authority. So the PHC authority is no longer incharge of the Ilowo health center. We don’t lock our facilities, if you see anyone, just know that it is not under our care.”

The Director of Research, Planning and Statistics at the Ondo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Uche Odionyenma, also expressed his surprise over the locking and shortage of staff at the health centers.

“I am not aware. I was told during my trip that some PHCs are non-functional, I don’t know what that means but I wasn’t given the name. From this enquiry you are giving me, I will find out why exactly it is under lock or there is no staff or the building is collapsing, there must be a reason for locking such a place. The only way I can do this is to get across to the PHCDA. We will investigate this.”

When confronted with the issue of shortage of staff at some of the PHCs in Ilaje, the Director of Nursing at OSMoH, Mrs. Alice Ogundele noted that it is not only in those areas.

“It is all over. That is why the government keeps employing. An advert is out. Partners are helping too. We are trusting that things will be alright,” Mrs Alice said through SMS.

Access to quality healthcare is still a challenge, especially to the residents of the oil oil-producing communities in Ilaje.  Government and concerned agencies must rise to salvage the situation to save the lives of these people with adequate medical infrastructures and revitalization of the PHCs.
