  • BBNaija and 2023 elections: What to do about youth involvement

BBNaija and 2023 elections: What to do about youth involvement

Since the announcement of the return of Big Brother Naija for the seventh season in June 2022, the Nigerian media space, especially social media, has been awash with diverse opinions. It was expected. In fact, what is BBNaija without ‘strong opinions’, using social media parlance, ‘hot takes’, from citizens?

One of the debates that caught this writer’s attention on social media was the call for the suspension of this year’s edition of the show “because Nigeria is preparing for an election, and we don’t want any distraction”.

Talking about BBNaija and its social, economic and political value for Nigeria and its people – is almost becoming a hobby for me.

In the last two years, I’ve argued in several articles about how the show has become one of the most promising routes for young Nigerians to escape from hustle life. The show is also contributing to Nigeria’s economy. My position over the years is a product of empirical data from research by respected scholars and personal interaction with some young Nigerians I realised are making it big off the platform that BBNaija provides.

The show is becoming increasingly more prominent in influence and assurance of wealth and fame for many young people, aside from the men and women camped in the BBNaija house for about three months.

Just a year ago, I argued that through BBNaija, Nigeria is winning back a place it lost a long time ago as the nation other 51 African countries look up to in everything. The ‘Big Brother’ of African nations.

Olusola Ogunnubi and Akinlolu Akinola, in a 2020 report, also confirmed that “The show confers respect on Nigeria. Via the subconscious association of the ‘Big Brother’ with Nigeria, there is a subtle affirmation of Nigeria’s ‘big brother’ honorific status in the hearts of viewers across the continent,” the duo argued.

BBNaija is arguably the biggest TV show in Africa today, and its place as one of the most dependable platforms for young Nigerians to realise their dream of a career in the creative industry is not in doubt.

When BBNaija season 6 ended in October 2021, Abeg Technologies, the headline sponsor of BBNaija season 6, said users of its Abeg app soared by 7000% following its sponsorship of the reality TV show.

According to Patricia Adoga, the COO of Abeg Technologies, the popularity of the BBNaija show rubbed off on its business. Users of the Abeg app rose from 20,000 before BBNaija season 6 to 1.8 million users during the show. Such is the power of the show. The Abeg app is back as a sponsor this year, albeit with a new name – Pocket by PiggyVest.

ID Africa, a Pan-African PR and communications advisory company, says the show generated over 55 billion media impressions between July 19 and September 25, 2020, with 7.7 million accounts using the word BBNaija over 20 million times on Twitter alone. Meanwhile, the 2021 edition of the biggest football tournament in Africa, the African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2021), only generated about 950 million impressions across all digital channels from January to February 2022, according to CAF.

BBNaija is a media and social phenomenon and a potent source of attraction, aspiration and admiration for Nigeria. As we prepare for the 2023 election, we should find ways to leverage BBNaija’s influence to galvanise the demography that BBNaija arrests its attention for 70 days that the show is on TV.

Who puts such a powerful platform of influence on hiatus while preparing for a crucial election where young people should be the deciding factor? That’s a risky ‘hot take’ that shouldn’t have made it to the public space.

Socio-political advocates should be harnessing and leveraging the power and influence of BBNaija to drive and mobilise young people to be part of the process that can and will produce Nigeria’s next leaders. Especially in an election where issues that directly affect young Nigerians – insecurity, rising unemployment, and police brutality will dominate conversations and campaign points.

Now that young people have recognised their power and are ready to deploy it in the next election, this is not a task for only the politically inclined. Amid the advocacy for 2023 elections, there’s still an army of young Nigerians who appear to be less concerned about who becomes the next President or local government chairman who is supposed to fix the life-threatening bad roads leading to their residence. Many of them are pop-culture enthusiasts. BBNaija is where to find many of them and properly sensitise and convince them with the right message to be part of the ongoing revolution.

In the face of a full-scale war in Ukraine, football tournaments like the English Premier League (EPL) became a platform to demand peace because of its global reach. Amid the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests in the United States in 2020, the America Got Talent (AGT) show did not distract protesters. The show continued.

Because we want to get the elections right, we shouldn’t halt economic, social and other activities. If politics is indeed a game of numbers and INEC says 74.7% of newly-registered voters are youths between the ages of 18 and 34, and this same demography is the primary audience of BBNaija, what we should be doing is to take the message to them in their comfort zone.

In the past, we’ve seen how BBNaija housemates addressed social issues like rape, drug abuse and mental health issues with their daily tasks; it won’t be a surprise to see the 2023 elections dominate their daily tasks during the seventh edition.

Rather than call for a suspension, political advocates and social crusaders should look into how to tap into the power of BBNaija to reach more young people and harvest their passion and numbers to drive social change.

Michael Orodare, a journalist and editor, writes from Lagos, Nigeria.

Four Nigerian celebrities sentenced to jail

They remain popular but that didn’t stop them from being on the wrong side of the law for which they paid heavily. Here are four celebrities who have been sentenced to jail:

    baba-ijeshas

  • 8 places you may find a ‘wife material’

8 places you may find a ‘wife material’

So many get confused when it comes to places to find a wife.

    Well, no matter your level of confusion, never rule out these seven places if your intention is to find a great ‘wife material’;

    Religious gatherings

Religious gatherings, especially those held on weekdays and Sundays in churches or mosques, have always been considered one of the best places to find a ‘wife material’ from time immemorial.

So if you are the very religious kind of man who also wants a ‘religious’ wife you should always switch on your search antenna whenever in any such gatherings.

Though not all the ladies and even men who gather in such places are what they depict, with your faith the heavens will smile on you and you will find your ‘perfect’ fit.

    Social media platforms

While not all social media platforms are guaranteed to give you your spec in a wife as there are a handful of people displaying false lifestyles and identities, there are still genuine ladies on these platforms. With due diligence and caution, if you apply your searchlight in the right corners, the comment section of a post or looking up a lady’s bio could interest. You can proceed to sending a DM and you could just get fortunate to realise she’s all you’ve wanted in a woman upon first actual meeting and the rest would become history.

    Weddings

This is one sure avenue to meet pretty ladies who would waste no time to show up looking beautiful, screaming ‘Take me home to mama’. But you know you can’t take all but one home to mama.

So you must spot and identify the one you think fits into the picture of the kind of woman you desire and shoot you shot. You may eventually get lucky and your wedding will be next others would be attending.

    The workplace

Oh yes! The office or the space you transact your business is another great spot to find for yourself the woman of your dreams.

Though, some people bluntly refuse the idea of considering the office as a place presenting several arguments to that effect.

However, the workplace should never be ruled out because many people have been fortunate to find their soul mates there.

You beam your searchlight among your female colleagues ‘entering your eyes’ and make your pick.

It’s okay to ask a few other ‘trusted’ colleagues about your spec if you haven’t established a good rapport with her.

If you’re conceived she fits into the picture, ‘apply pressure’ regardless of what others may think or say but stay ‘woke’ while at it because your yearning for a wife in the office must not interfere with your jobs.

    The gymnasium aka gym

For the fitness enthusiasts who love to work out and desire someone just like yourself, this is your one sure spot to find ‘her’.

    Parties/clubs

Not all female clubbers/ party attenders are indecent or ‘loose’. Some go to such places just to unwind, may sound like a weird way of doing that though. But yes, that’s how some people unwind. Not everyone would just lock themselves indoors or going to the movies some want to party hard, dance, listen to loud music and maybe sip some drinks.

So, if your spec fits into this category, you should ‘dull yourself’ when next you go clubbing or partying.

    The movies

The cinema is a cool place to spot that ‘wife material’ you have so yearned for.

If you are single and searching male and a movie lover who would rather go out to see one than in your house, aside seeing your favourite movie when you do go to the cinema, also intentionally look out for a prospective wife material among the ladies that troop in to indulge.

Do not allow your movie night out go to waste!

    The beach

Yes! Yes!! Yess!!! The beach! This is another sure hotspot to get that dream girl and make her yours forever.

  • Low capital businesses for startups

    Low capital businesses for startups

The easiest businesses to start would be anything online because these they require minimal startup costs and one can easily control them. It affords you the opportunity to earn more profit and do less work over time.

    Some of these low capital businesses include;

    DROPSHIPPING

Dropshipping is an e-commerce model where you do not have to keep products in a store neither do you have to keep an inventory on goods.
A dropshipper acts as a middleman between the supplier (who could be the manufacturer) and the consumer. The dropshipper doesn’t order inventory in bulk and doesn’t fulfill the orders in any way.
The dropshipper transfers the details of the customers to the supplier and the supplier ships the products to the customer.
In essence, the dropshipper make their money by selling the product at a higher price just as every retailer does. For example, if the price of a product on wholesale is $100, the dropshipper can sell it for $150-$200 making a commission of $50-100 easily. A dropshipper can dropship anything at all; human hairs, cars, lands, etc

There are many affiliate programmes available to people but in the case of Expertnaire, affiliates are paid weekly(fridays) depending on if a sale was made.

    FREELANCING

In simple terms, freelancing is when you use your skills, education, and experience to work with multiple clients and take on various assignments without committing to a single employer. The number of assignments or tasks that you can take just boils down to your ability to deliver on them as asked from them.
Freelancing usually involves jobs (called gigs) that allow you to work-from-home situations. Becoming a freelancer is just as easy as ordering something over the Internet. You visit sites that offer freelance jobs and tasks and take them on.

  • Six prominent Nigerians who’ve said Peter Obi cannot win 2023 presidency

Six prominent Nigerians who’ve said Peter Obi cannot win 2023 presidency

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi has come under criticism over his aspiration to win the presidency.

Many have argued that Obi, who is faced with too many hurdles, lacks the alliance formation across political divides and standard political structures across Nigeria.

Some others mocked Obi and his army of independent volunteers – ‘Obi-dient Movement’ for leading in various polls on social media and online platforms instead of creating physical presence in remote areas of the country especially the north.

In all of these criticisms, some prominent persons in the country’s political circle have said the former Anambra Governor would never be president of the country in 2023.

Obi, seen as an ‘underdog’, will slug it out with candidates of the two major parties: Asiwaju Bola Tinubu (All Progressives Congress) and Atiku Abubakar (Peoples Democratic Party).

Others are: Dumebi Kachikwu (African Democratic Congress); Prince Malik Ado-Ibrahim (Young Progressives Party); Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (New Nigeria Peoples’ Party), Prince Adewole Adeboye (Social Democratic Party (SDP); Omoyele Sowore (African Action Congress); Kola Abiola (Peoples’ Redemption Party); Peter Umeadi (All Progressives Grand Alliance); Dan Nwanyanwu (Zenith Labour Party); Christopher Imumolen (Accord Party) and Maj. Hamza Mustapha (Action Alliance).

To many other observers, Obi’s supporters are also jeopardising his aspiration because of their hateful comments, and always hurling abusive and insulting words at anyone who campaigns for their candidate.

These are prominent individuals who have spoken against Obi’s candidacy:

    Babangida Aliyu

Former Niger Governor Babangida Aliyu said Obi is a good candidate but 2023 would be too early for him to make it.

Aliyu said: “Peter Obi is my good friend and a former member of my former Governors forum. A very excellent person.

“His candidature, in terms of the Presidency, – I think he will make some name now. But he may be able to make it only in 2027, 2031. But 2023? Too early.

“Even though the young people might go for him, the name is not dropping everywhere else. I doubt if Nigerians are ready for him now as a presidential person.

“I would have loved him as a Vice President. Many of us were rooting for him to be Vice President to Atiku again.”

    Ned Nwoko

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Delta North, Prince Ned Nwoko declared Obi cannot win the 2023 presidency.

He advised the former Anambra Governor to return to the PDP and pick a ministerial appointment.

The former House of Representatives member said Peter Obi’s current party lacks the structure to produce the presidency despite his seemingly large support base.

He eulogised Obi, describing him as a very ‘frugal and conservative’ in his dealings while he was Governor.

“People Obi is a good man, I’ve known him for many years. When I did my Paris club refund for Anambra State, he impressed me.

“He impressed me because he will actually pick the phone to arrange my flight. He will pick his phone to book my hotel. And he was the governor.

“He actually came to London and didn’t come like other governors that came to see me, to give me instructions. He came alone, carrying his bag.

“We will like him back in the PDP. I would want to be one of those that’ll encourage him to come back to PDP. We can have him.”

    Father Mbaka

Fiery Catholic Priest, Ejike Mbaka, had said the former Anambra Governor will never be President in 2023 or anytime later.

Mbaka said the Labour Party (LB) presidential candidate is a “stingy man” and that it was better to have an “old generous man” as president than a “stingy young man”.

“It is now that Atiku (Abubakar) is contesting for president. Now that he is contesting without Peter Obi, it is now that he is serious. We want somebody that is serious. Unless Peter Obi comes here to kneel, if he becomes President, I will close down this ministry. He is going nowhere,” Mbaka said

Many Nigerians, including the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, criticised him over his comment.

Although Rev. Mbaka has backtracked and apologised to Obi, and his supporters for the comment, his initial scathing remarks about Obi appears timely and will be in the public domain for long.

    Ike Ekweremadu

Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu said that people from the South-East will not vote for Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

The lawmaker from Enugu state acknowledged that Peter Obi is a credible candidate but that the South-East needs to be dynamic and should not waste their votes on Peter Obi because he can’t win the presidential election.

    David Umahi

Ebonyi Governor David Umahi asked indigenes of the State to obtain their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) and vote for the Presidential Flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.

Umahi told the residents not to vote for Obi.

“Our party is APC and not the Labour Party. We will not vote for the Labour Party. We will vote for APC.

“The States that the Labour Party has helped should vote for them.

“The agenda of God for Ebonyi state is Ebonyi state agenda and that is what you should be telling them when they come to ask you, will you vote for. Tell them not to look for our votes, our votes belong to APC”, he added.

    Chukwuma Soludo

Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo has said those dreaming to win the 2023 general elections under new parties are jokers.

He specifically said those who joined the Labour Party (LP) like its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will just labour in vain in 2023.

The Governor said a party without a councillor has nothing to offer.
