  • Five recyclable waste materials

    Five recyclable waste materials

The world is characterized by the growth and production of materials, which we use in carrying out daily activities. The frequency of which production occurs makes recycling a very important factor in maintaining a stable working environment. There are many materials that shouldn’t be discarded after use because recycling them can reduce the production costs of new ones.

    To avoid running out of resources, it is needful to make prudent use of available materials by keeping them for recycling purposes. Materials that can be recycled include the following;

    * Tire: The rubber powder recycled from the scrap tires are wildly used in the industries. It is mainly used as modified asphalt for highway construction and it is one of the biggest consumption markets for rubber granula. There are more volume of applications for the rubber, steel and fibre derived from recycling tyre which makes tyre recycling an attractive opportunity for the recycling industry.

    * Plastic: There are many plastic materials in our homes, which we discard when not in use. It is better to keep these for recycling purposes. The systems are capable of processing a wide range of plastic materials with varying levels of contamination including extremely heavy contamination such as oil-based substances and agricultural waste and converting them into something new.

*Cardboard: The first step in recycling cardboard is to separate it from other paper such as office paper and newspaper. The cardboard is then baled and sent to a mill, shredded into small pieces, and put in a pulping machine to introduce water/chemicals and break down the cardboard into fibers. Over half of the cardboard collected is used to make new cardboard boxes, and additional cardboard can be downcycled into cereal boxes and shoe boxes.

*Steel: Steel can be infinitely recycled because it is such a widely used material, the range of possible uses for it are endless. It can be found in an incredibly diverse variety of products from train tracks and cars to bicycle frames and paperclips and of course new food and drinks cans.

*Glass: Glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss in quality or purity. Glass is a very important inorganic material which is one of the largest productions of industries. It can be made into a variety of different products used for man’s daily living.

As humans, we should be able to differentiate between recyclable and non-recyclable waste so that we will be able to utilise resources properly and help the continuous production process.

  • Inside Nigeria’s organic fertiliser producing plant

Inside Nigeria’s organic fertiliser producing plant

For 20 years, Earthcare Nigeria Limited has been converting organic waste to fertiliser and producing organic feeds for animal husbandry, making it the largest organic fertiliser producer in Nigeria. Sunday Oguntola, who visited the plant of the firm recently in Ikorodu, Lagos reports on how it has been producing a daily turnout of 500 bags.

Waste trucks move in and out of Earthcare Nigeria Limited almost on a daily basis with residents in the estate where it is situated in Ikorodu suburb of Lagos wondering what they get to do with them. The massive tonnes of waste moved into the quiet, expansive landscape of the firm however turn into mega millions and improve the environmental fortunes of Nigeria in no small way. From the waste emerge economic bucks and a cleaner environment.

While many residents close to the plant, including millions of Nigerians may not be aware, some farmers in the most populous black nation on earth have been benefitting from the astonishing products from the waste in the last 20 years.

The firm has been converting organic waste to fertiliser with indescribable nutritional value to the soil. The waste gathered mainly from nearby Ketu and Ojota markets produces not less than 500 bags of organic fertiliser under the Waste-To-Wealth initiative of the firm with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). LAWMA MD/CEO Ibrahim Odumboni, confirmed this at a recent stakeholders meeting.

According to him, Earthcare Nigeria Limited plays a major role in the project, promising that LAWMA would collaborate more to stabilise the recycling value-chain for fair reward to all stakeholders and investors.

The plant situated on a 24-hectare expanse of land in the Ikorodu recycling waste plant has the capacity to produce 200,000 metric tons of Grade “A” organic fertilizer per annum.
Chief Operating Officer/Managing Director of Earthcare Nigeria Limited, Gregory Ohiaeri, explained the project, apart from reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 20%, converts them to value for farmers, meaning vegetables, fruits or other plants grown with the fertilizer are purely organic devoid of any harmful chemicals.

The unique idea of converting perishable wastes to fertilizer started the during the administration of former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos when Earthcare Nigeria Limited entered into a partnership with LAWMA to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting solid waste, which would normally go to landfills in the city of Lagos, to a state-of-the-art composting facility.

Ohiaeri explained that while funding has always been a major challenge because of the need to expand more and acquire more equipment, Earthcare is also producing organic feeds for poultry and other livestock farmers at cost-effective prices compared to other chemically enhanced feeds.

“Waste, which hitherto a challenge and burden, has been channeled to the plant is now creating employment. Not only that, the organic fertilizer produced from the plant is now being sought after by farmers to nourish their vegetables and other planted crops in their farms.

“All organic soil additives are not composted. A farmer buys NPK chemical fertilizer hoping to feed his crop but in reality, all farmers know that a large amount of the N that they purchase is lost as ammonia to the air, dissolves in water where it washes from the field during a rain event or is carried deep in the soil towards the aquifer beyond the plant’s root system.”
According to him, while the NPK chemical fertilizer goes for about N12,500, Earthcare organic fertilizer costs less half while being more beneficial to the soil, crop and farmers. This is because it contains a diverse set of organisms, a diverse set of food resources, and humus to provide good aggregate soil structure.

“Presently, we have supplied many States in the country with fertilizers from the site. All we are doing presently is to scale up the capacity which requires lots of funding. The Lagos State Government has been supportive but with more support, we will be able to reach more farmers and improve the state of agriculture in the State.”

The plant, Ohiaeri said, is not just to convert waste to fertilizers. Earthcare is also helping livestock farmers to produce organic feeds that not only keep their livestock growing well but is also healthy for people who consume them.

“We have designed a biorefinery that turns waste into wealth for smallholder farmers. Our zero-waste, zero-emissions system converts organic waste using black soldier fly larvae. When the black soldier fly larvae are fed organic waste, they mature quickly and have a high protein content which makes them a nutritious animal feed.

“In the feeding process, they break down the organic matter and leave behind a residue which serves as an organic soil amendment. The larvae which are then dried and blended with cassava puddings which is also a by-product from a starch-making company contain high protein for livestock.”

He said with more funding, Earthcare wants to focus on strengthening its supply chain logistics and also integrate tech into the process a bit more.

“I think mobilising the informal sector would also be pretty impactful. There are a lot of people in waste management, unofficially, but I think they just need that push to have a waste sorting and waste processing center. And being able to streamline that process would be huge for us. For one, because we know exactly what kind of waste we’re getting and we have a waste source secured,” he added.

Converting food waste into animal feed is highly useful for tackling the problem of food waste, which is particularly severe in developed countries.

The Head of Animal Husbandry for Earthcare Nigeria Limited Aina Ololade Matthew said the conversion of food waste into animal feed is highly useful for tackling the problem of food waste, which is particularly severe in developed countries like Nigeria.
“Converting food waste into animal feed is highly useful for tackling the problem of food waste, which is particularly severe in developed countries. For every kilogram of (chicken) broiler feed, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by 300 grams with a 10% mix diet generated from wastes which ordinarily would have been an eyesore,” he stressed.

Head PR and Marketing, Titi Mogaji, said with enough investment, the amount of commercially produced food waste, on both the large and small scale, needs to be reduced. “With nearly fifty percent of this waste being derived from fruit and vegetable origins, recycling this waste into animal feed would drastically reduce the overall amount of waste produced,” she added.

  • Five reasons to drink enough water

Five reasons to drink enough water

Water is one of the classes of food and the most important one at that because without water death can occur. That explains the popular saying “water is life”. Hence the importance of water cannot be overemphasized.

Below are some reasons why water should be taken adequately:

*It aids Digestion: water is essential to good health. It helps break down food so that your body can absorb them( nutrients) into the body. It also helps to prevent constipation and make stool softer. Everyday, you should choose water over other sugary drinks. It is the best.

*For regulating body temperature: the human body uses water to stabilize temperature meaning it can absorb heat before its temperature rises. This is what allows the water in every cell of the human body to stabilize the human system against sudden temperature changes. Water also helps to expel heat from the body as water vapour from the lungs and through sweat on the skin.

*It reduces skin harshness: water helps to maintain the skins elasticity and keep it hydrated. People who drink enough water are less likely to suffer from scars and wrinkles and they won’t show many signs of ageing as those that drink little amounts of water.

*To normalize blood pressure: dehydration causes the kidney to release renin. This results in sodium and water retention in the body to correct the low fluid volume. This response if constant can cause the blood pressure to be high. If these effects remain constant in the body, the brain will constantly have to maintain a blood pressure higher than it normally should so that other organs can receive blood supply. When this happens, people are at risk of having hypertension because of poor water intake.

*Cushioning joints: Water helps to keep your joints properly lubricated and flexible. The synovial fluid that directly lubricates the joints consists of mainly water. This fluid reduces friction between joints and helps to maintain healthy tissues. Intake of alcoholic drinks can heavily affect your joint movement because it easily makes you dehydrated and this is not good for the joints. Therefore, it is advised that taking alcohol should be accompanied by almost a double of water measurement to keep the body hydrated.

  • Four reasons for cryptocurrencies crash

    Four reasons for cryptocurrencies crash

With all its uncertainties, crypto is considered one of the most volatile instruments for investment purposes.

Cryptocurrency markets were reported on June 13, 2022, to have crashed to a new low this year.

The global market cap shrunk below $1 trillion to $977 billion, around a 12 % fall since Sunday.

The global cryptocurrency market cap fell by around $1 trillion this year while almost every top coin is now worth half or even less than their all-time highs.

Bitcoin, the biggest and most popular cryptocurrency, has fallen below $22,000 while almost all altcoins, starting from Ethereum, are bleeding prices since the weekend.

Below are four major reasons responsible for the crashing of cryptocurrencies in recent times:

    • According to Edul Patel Co-Founder and CEO of crypto investment platform Mudrex, the crypto market has been under pressure from the Federal Reserve, hiking the interest rates to combat inflation over the past few months.
    • As a result of a broad sell-off, following the data showing US inflation hitting a 40-year high, Bitcoin, Ethereum, and most cryptocurrencies suffered losses over the weekend.
    • As investors seem to have panicked, the number of crypto liquidations has been high since Friday. Bitcoin and Ethereum plummeted as much as 7% each and is currently trading at their lowest at US$25,000 and US$1,300.
    • The rising food, gas, and energy prices are also putting tremendous pressure on the crypto market as Bitcoin and Ethereum have witnessed double-digit losses in the past 24 hours according to another expert, Shivam Thakral, CEO of crypto exchange BuyUcoin.

In a nutshell, the immediate trigger for the crypto crash appears to be a massive sell-off by investors amid heightened inflation fears and pausing of withdrawal by crypto lending service Celsius.

Investors are also continuing to stay away from riskier assets, resulting in crypto price plunges which are reflected in the stock markets as well.
