UPDATED :Tinubu meets APC Govs ahead NEC

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Wednesday evening, met with Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the banner of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), ahead of Thursday’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the ruling party.

The meeting, which took place at the State House in Abuja, was attended by all 24 APC Governors but the Governors of Katsina and Akwa Ibom States were represented by their deputies.

Speaking to journalists after the closed-door session, Chairman of the PGF and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, said the governors used the opportunity to formally condole with President Tinubu over the recent passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He noted that the discussion also revolved around strategies to fortify the APC across all levels.

“We came as a group to formally condole the passing of the former President Muhammadu Buhari and also to discuss the upcoming National Executive Committee meeting of our party tomorrow,” Uzodinma stated.

According to him, the meeting was also an avenue to engage in a “convivial discussion” with the President on how to better reposition the party and deepen its grassroots support.

“We also shared some ideas with Mr. President on how best to strengthen our party at the grassroots, at the local government, at the state levels up to the national level. It was just a convivial discussion with Mr. President towards strengthening our party and to be able to help serve Nigeria better,” he said.

Asked whether Thursday’s NEC meeting will produce a consensus on the appointment of a new national chairman for the party, Uzodinma was non-committal, saying only that the outcome would become clear after the meeting.

“It is a National Executive Committee meeting; we cannot say what the outcome will be. When you come there tomorrow, you will see it,” he said.

The APC NEC is expected to deliberate on key matters affecting the party’s structure and leadership, including the possible ratification of a substantive national chairman to replace Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, who resigned from the position following internal consultations.

We’ll support whoever emerges ADC presidential candidate in fair primary-Amaechi

A former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi has said everyone aspiring to fly the presidential flag of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in 2027 will support anyone that emerges from a free and fair primary election of the party.

Amaechi described Rivers as a state notorious for writing election results and asked his supporters to prepare to defend their votes.

The former Transport Minister spoke to his loyalists at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Wednesday

He said his coming was to reassure supporters and Rivers people that there was a new coalitoon under the ADC in town.

Amaechi said the ADC was formed to end the second-term ambition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which he claimed had brought hardship to the people.

He asked every Rivers man “that thinks good of the state and the country” register with the new party and vote out the present administration.

On ADC presidential ticket, he said:  “The moment anybody emerges from the primaries, we insist on a free, fair and transparent primary, all of us will support whoever emerges”.

He added: “If you are not tired of President Tinubu, I’m tired of President Tinubu. If you’re not hungry, I’m hungry. If the rich men are spending N4million a month for electricity, only God knows how you are surviving. And the President says he doesn’t care.

“The President says he is not here to make you happy. But ADC is here to make you happy”, adding that “Rivers State is notorious for writing (election) results. When they write results, they claim they have won. I will not work with you if you work with those result snatchers to announce results. God will bless all of us.

Addressing the supporters, Amaechi added: “Most importantly, have your eyes on 2027. Please go home and start registration. We will form a committee local government to local government to ascertain the number of people we have. If you allow them rig you out, our state is notorious for writing results and we must stop them from writing results.

“They make noise after writing results. Go home now and start mobilizing people that will come and vote. Let me tell you one bad thing that we should not do; when you say they have already written the results, you discourage voters from coming out.”

  • Allegations against Wike political, unsubstantiated, says Onoh

Allegations against Wike political, unsubstantiated, says Onoh

A former spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu in the southeast, Josef Onoh, has described recent calls for the removal of Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, as politically motivated and lacking in substance.

Onoh, in a statement, said the allegations, especially those concerning illegal land allocations, were not backed by verifiable evidence and appeared aimed at discrediting the minister’s efforts to transform the FCT.

He maintained that Wike’s actions in office were guided by the law and aligned with the development objectives of the FCT.

Citing constitutional provisions and existing land administration laws, Onoh argued that Wike’s decisions on land allocation and revocation were lawful.

According to him, the Land Use Act of 1978 vests land administration authority in the FCT Minister, adding that Section 302 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) empowers the Minister to exercise delegated authority from the President.

Responding to claims that the Minister had allocated land to family members and associates, Onoh noted that no official documents or credible evidence have been presented to support such claims.

He pointed to Section 36(1) of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to a fair hearing and the presumption of innocence.

Continuing, Onoh noted that the FCT administration under Wike has repeatedly clarified that all land allocations were carried out within the framework of the Abuja Master Plan, adding that Wike had publicly denied allocating land to his children and asked those in doubt to scrutinise records of land allocations.

On allegations involving companies reportedly linked to Wike’s family members, Onoh said these remained unproven. He also noted that even if the individuals in question had applied for land, they are entitled to be treated equally under Section 42 of the Constitution, which prohibits discrimination.

Addressing the revocation of certain land titles, including that of an embassy, Onoh said such actions were within the Minister’s powers under the Land Use Act, provided they followed due process. He emphasised that revocations tied to violations of the Abuja Master Plan or undocumented land holdings were consistent with the minister’s mandate.

He acknowledged the ongoing investigation reportedly ordered by President Tinubu into similar allegations, describing it as a sign of the administration’s commitment to accountability.

On the role of the National Assembly, Onoh said oversight was vital but must be evidence-based. According to him, the absence of formal petitions or concrete proof may explain why the legislature has not taken a definitive stance on the matter.

He highlighted several infrastructure projects under Wike’s leadership, including road construction, solar-powered streetlights, and urban renewal initiatives, as tangible signs of progress in the FCT.

Onoh cautioned critics against making unverified public allegations, warning that such actions might run afoul of defamation laws under the Penal Code Act.

Concluding, Onoh reiterated that Wike’s administration in the FCT was operating within the bounds of the law, urging anyone with evidence of wrongdoing to present it to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to public speculation.

Bye-elections: Request for accreditation not encouraging, says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said on Wednesday that response from media houses seeking to cover the forthcoming bye-election across several states in the country has not been encouraging.

Director, Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi, said in a statement that the commission has received applications from only 12 media houses seeking to deploy about 91 personnel.

Ex-Labour guber aspirant Imasuagbon joins ADC in Edo

A former governorship aspirant of the Labour Party in Edo State, Barr. Kenneth Imasuagbon, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) along with his supporters.

Imasuagbon, popularly known as the ‘Rice Man’, picked up his ADC membership card in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The seasoned politician, who had previously contested elections under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), now part of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said his decision to join the ADC was driven by concern over growing hunger and hardship in the country.

He lamented that the rising cost of food items, particularly rice, has made it difficult for him to continue his tradition of distributing rice to the poor.

According to him, “Nobody will come from Jupiter to repair and rescue the country. It is only Nigerians that can rescue this country. It is no longer hunger but starvation that is happening in Nigeria. Prices have sky rocketed. I can no longer buy rice to Edo people.

“Nigerians are tired. Unemployment is on the rise and Naira has fallen in value.

“I have found a credible alternative and that alternative is the ADC.

I am here to join the ADC. It will take us to the promise land. We are all Nigerians. Nobody can threatened anybody. We want to make Nigeria and Edo better than we met them.

I am not satisfied with the poverty in the land. I am calling on all Nigerians to come on board. I am ready to lead the battle for change.”

Edo ADC Chairman, Kennedy Odion, said there would be no sitting on the fence ahead of 2027.

He acknowledged that the journey to 2027 would be tough and rough.

  • Defection of Senator Onawo, others to ADC rattles Nasarawa PDP

Defection of Senator Onawo, others to ADC rattles Nasarawa PDP

The defection of the only People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Senator in Nasarawa State, Muhammed Ogoshi Onawo to the African Democratic Party (ADC) appeared to have rattled PDP leaders in Nasarawa State.

The defection took place in Kini Hotels in Akwanga during the weekend when the Senator attended the ADC stakeholders meeting that produced a former deputy Governor Dr John Mike Abdul as ADC interim chairman for Nasarawa State.

But the PDP chairman in the State, Hon Adamu Bako described the ADC coalition members as noise makers who have no electoral value, saying their exit does not constitute any threat to the party.

The statement by the party’s Public Relations officer, Hamza Ibrahim on behalf  of the Chairman in Lafia, noted at 70, those fronting the coalition ADC in the country especially in Nasarawa State have nothing to offer as such cannot form a stumbling block as far as elections are concern.

The statement reads: “At the age of 70s to 80s, most of them have since exhausted their individual and collective political relevance. We therefore, challenge the media to conduct a popularity search on them from their respective polling units, wards and even LGA to attest to this well known fact

“We made bold to ask them to publish the results of their individual polling units, wards and LGAs for public scrutiny. For instance, it’s on INEC record that a former Minister in the State got just 7 votes delivered to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election that he served as a high ranking member of his campaign.

“A former Senator couldn’t deliver both his polling unit and ward. In a district in Karu LGA, a serving minister at that time list woefully” the statement declared

Onawo, who represents Nasarawa South on the platform of the PDP defeated former Governor, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of the APC during the 2023 general elections.

  • Return APC chairmanship to north-central, forum tells Tinubu ahead of NEC meeting

Return APC chairmanship to north-central, forum tells Tinubu ahead of NEC meeting

The North-Central All Progressives Congress (NC APC) Forum has called on President Bola Tinubu and the party’s leadership to uphold fairness and return the office of the APC National Chairman to the North-Central region, ahead of the crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, June 24, 2025.

The Forum also firmly rejected calls for the extension of the acting chairmanship of Ali Bukar Dalori, the Deputy National Chairman (North) from Borno State, who stepped in following the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Forum’s Chairman, Saleh Zazzaga, who also served on the APC Presidential Campaign Council in the 2023 elections, said returning the chairmanship to the North-Central would not only reflect equity and fairness but also align with the party’s internal zoning arrangements.

“There are several capable personalities in the North-Central who can lead the APC. We appeal to the President to choose any one of them to lead the party as National Chairman,” Zazzaga said.

The Forum warned that ignoring the North-Central zone would amount to political betrayal, especially since the region had previously held the position through Senator Abdullahi Adamu, who emerged as Chairman in 2022 but resigned before completing his tenure.

The group dismissed concerns that leadership changes might destabilise the party, stating instead that honouring the original zoning principle would strengthen unity and deepen trust among members, particularly in a pre-election year.

The resignation of Abdullahi Ganduje on June 27 reopened the debate over where the chairmanship should reside. The North-Central Forum insists the region must be allowed to complete its original tenure before any discussion of rotating the position.

“We are not against anyone, but we are for fairness,” Zazzaga said. “Our zone deserves the position, and it is the right thing to do for the stability of the party and the confidence of our supporters in the region.”

As the APC heads into Thursday’s NEC meeting, the call by the North-Central Forum adds to growing political pressure on the presidency and party leadership to ensure equitable representation and balance within the ruling party’s top hierarchy.

“As the National Executive Committee (NEC) of our great party meets on Thursday, we, the North-Central APC Forum appeal to President Bola Tinubu and other leaders of the party to do the right thing and ensure that the National Chairman is returned to the North-Central.

“Any decision to the contrary will be viewed as a betrayal. It will be a terrible disappointment to stakeholders in the North-Central if the NEC fails to uphold fairness and equity.

“The North-Central gave President Tinubu and the APC the third highest number of votes in the 2023 presidential election, behind the South-West and North-West.

“In the presidential election, the APC secured 1,760,993 votes (41.3%) in the North-Central, ahead of the Labour Party’s 1,415,557 (33.2%) and the PDP’s 1,025,178 (24.1%).

“The North-Central deserves to produce the APC National Chairman due to the region’s contributions to the party,” he said.

Furthermore, the Forum noted that APC currently governs five of the six states in the region, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Niger, a feat unmatched in any other zone.

“Among the various geopolitical zones, the North-Central has the highest number of APC governors. This unmatched record demonstrates the strength and the wide acceptance of the party in the region.

“Returning the position of National Chairman to the North-Central is not a favour; it is well deserved,” he said.

However, the Forum dismissed calls by Dr. Maryam Danjaki’s All Progressives Stakeholders Forum to extend Ali Bukar Dalori’s acting chairmanship, rejecting fears of unrest or political instability.

“We reject any plan to extend Dalori’s acting tenure. That would be robbing Peter to pay Paul. The North-East should not benefit at the expense of the North-Central.

“It is on record that the opposition won in the North-East in 2023, even though the running mate of President Bola Tinubu is from the zone.”

“In the North-East during the last presidential election, PDP’s Atiku Abubakar secured 1,741,846 votes (55.9%), while Tinubu managed only 933,176 votes (29.9%), a result the Forum believes undermines any claim by the North-East to the National Chairmanship position.

“The North-Central and the North-West are the only zones that believed in President Bola Tinubu 100 percent. We don’t want a situation where our people will feel that their contributions are not appreciated,” Zazzaga said.

Addressing fears that a change in leadership could destabilise the party, the Forum said the opposite is true.

“Effecting a change in leadership by returning the position of National Chairman to the North-Central will revitalise the party. It will demonstrate that the APC is committed to the principles of fairness and equity,” he said.

At the presentation of a memorandum to the public hearing committee through its vice-chairman, EngineerTukur Lawal, the group argued that the new state if created would help bring government closer to the people.

Lawal said: “Specifically, we propose the creation of Karadua State from the present Katsina South Senatorial Zone (also known as the Funtua Zone), comprising the following 11 Local Government Areas: Funtua, Bakori, Malumfashi, Kafur, Danja, Kankara, Sabuwa, Dandume, Faskari, Musawa, Matazu”

“Furthermore, in line with the constitutional requirement of creating viable administrative units, we propose the creation of additional local government areas to reflect current population size, geographic spread, and administrative demands.

“The formation of Karadua State will bring governance closer to the people; facilitate equitable resource allocation and infrastructural development; enhance political participation and representation; reduce marginalisation and improve security coordination at the grassroots.

“This request aligns with the spirit of federalism and supports national calls for restructuring to ensure balanced development across all zones,” the group added.

Chairman of the public hearing committee, Senator Ibrahim Ida, said the committee is collecting the group’s opinions as well as those of other groups about issues they want to see amended in the nation’s constitution.

Ida said: ”The opinions of groups from the three senatorial zones of the state, when collated, would be submitted to the Senate Committee for the northwest zone, which would soon be sitting in Kano State ”
