‘Power should shift to North district’

Four governorship aspirants from Kwara North have expressed their interest to take over the reins of power from Governor Abdulraman AbdulRazaq in 2027.

AbdulRazaq had in his first term assured of a power shift to the zone.

The aspirants said this in Ilorin, the state capital, at a stakeholders’ meeting.

They pleaded with other senatorial districts to concede the seat of governance in the state to Kwara North.

They spoke at stakeholders’ by Senator representing the zone at the National Assembly, Sodiq Umar, the House of Assembly Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy Chairman Abdullahi Samari.

Alhaji Samari, said that the zone was one big family united to produce the next governor of the state.

Those who have shown interest to contest for the number one seat in the state are Senator Umar; Hon Danladi-Salihu; Makama of Lafiagi Alhaji Tajudeen Audu; and Haliru Dantosho Mahmud.

The APC deputy chair added that the meeting was convened “to put our house in order and let the world know that Kwara North is prepared and ready to take over from the current administration come 2027.

According to him, the senatorial district have resolved to continue with Abdulrazaq’s good work, assuring Kwarans that whoever emerges as the governorship candidate will perform wonders to the amazement of those who think we don’t have materials.

“We have also invited the aspirants today for them to sit down and work together so that those who claim we cannot work together will know it is not true. We are trying to put our house in order to the envy of others who never thought we can work in unity.

“Principally, APC has guidelines and that will be followed before a candidate will emerge.

“We want to assure Kwarans and Nigerians that those aspiring to govern the state from Kwara north are people with enough wisdom and experience; people with fear of God, love for the masses, and have resolved to work together.”

All the four aspirants took turns to express their resolve to rally round anyone that will eventually emerge as the governorship candidate in 2027.

Also, Senator Umar said the governorship seat is what the zone has been “hungry for in the interest of Kwara first and of course, our region.

“All we are asking is for Kwarans to trust us and give us this opportunity to also govern the state.

“There is no division between us. We are all working together. Kwara north is united and not divided. We are one people and the same family.”

Speaker Danladi-Salihu waxing spiritual, said the project is God’s and “by God’s grace, we will reach the destination.

“We are only pleading with Kwara south and central senatorial districts to support the northern zone to have the ticket in 2027.”

Another aspirant, Audu said that “we are all united in support of a single cause of producing the governor for our zone in 2027.

“I use this forum to implore Kwarans to support us in the interest of the whole state because we are all Kwarans.”

Aligning with his colleagues, Mahmud praised the leadership of the party for the opportunity afforded them to come together and “talk in common voice.

“I want to assure that whoever gets the governorship ticket in 2027, we will support the person with all that we have to succeed. The zone is one and not divided.”

Patriots demand new constitution, support independent candidature

The National Constitutional Summit organised by Eminent Patriots of Nigeria on Thursday called for an immediate constitutional framework that will return Nigeria to a truly federal system of government.

The group, a gathering of elder statesmen and women, intellectuals and civic leaders, rejected the 1999 Constitution as amended insisting that the existing document was imposed on Nigerians by the military.

Chaired by former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the summit demanded a new constitution to be drafted by  elected members of the Constituent Assembly.

In the resolutions of the summit jointly read to newsmen by Profs Maxwell Gidado and Mike Ozokhome SAN, the group called for immediate constitutional framework that will return Nigeria to “where the federating units will enjoy their autonomy as obtainable in the First Republic and in other genuine democracies of the world.”

In order to get legal backing for the proposal, the group requested President Bola Ahmed to introduce an executive bill to the National Assembly to empower the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to organise election into a Constituent Assembly.

On the mode of constituting the delegates to the proposed Constituent Assembly,  the summit recommended that members should be elected on a non-partisan basis as well as representatives of special interest groups

The resolutions read: “The Assembly will rewrite a People’s Democratic Constitution that will be subjected to a referendum of the Nigerian people before it is presented to the National Assembly.

“The Assembly, in formulating the Constitution, will take into full consideration the 1960, 1963, and 1999 constitutions, the 2014 National Conference recommendations and orders for a return to genuine federalism, and for the future of the United States.”

They called for rearrangement of the six geopolitical zone in such a way as to ensure a truly federal system of government.

  • Stop threatening the coalition, group warns Peter Obi

Stop threatening the coalition, group warns Peter Obi

A socio-political group, the South-South Emerging Leaders’ Forum (SELF), has cautioned former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against making divisive remarks or threatening the newly formed opposition coalition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Benjamin Kolowei, the group accused Obi of lacking genuine commitment to the coalition, alleging that he is already plotting to abandon it, similar to his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries.

SELF further warned Obi against allegedly blackmailing the coalition to zone the presidential ticket to the South, stating that such actions could trigger agitation from the North to complete the 18 years it claims the South has held the presidency.

The statement reads, “We note that Mr. Peter Obi and his obedient movement, in recent times, have resorted to threatening and blackmailing the leadership of the Coalition. We dare to tell the former Anambra Governor that such a strategy will not work; it has failed woefully.

“Records have shown that Mr. Obi has a history of running away from primary elections, which is a major aspect of democratic culture. If Mr. Obi claims to be a democrat, why is he always avoiding the primary election? Why is he looking for a free presidential ticket? He did that as a governor, and as recently as 2023, Mr. Obi abandoned PDP when it was time for the primary election.

“As a forum of professionals and emerging leaders, we will not fold our hands and tolerate Peter Obi to frustrate the ongoing arrangements to rescue our Nation and have a credible alternative to the APC.

“We hereby call on Mr. Peter Obi to stop his pretentious lifestyle as if he is a saint or the only Messiah Nigeria is waiting for. If Mr. Obi wants to participate in a democratic contest, he should respect the rules of the game. Though he has never fought or contributed to the development of the democratic process in Nigeria, he does not know what it takes.

“Obi and his Obidients should learn early that democracy is about contest, not about free lunch or free tickets. It is not about blackmail.

“If Obi is looking for where he will be given a free presidential ticket, the door is open. Although we have gathered reliably that Mr. Obi has secured another platform where he will soon unveil to contest in 2027, it is high time the leaders of the ADC Coalition do not sleep with their two eyes closed. We are making it public that Peter Obi is not ready to cooperate and work with Coalition leaders.”

The group called on the David Mark-led ADC leadership not to bow to any pressure to zone the ticket of the party to any zone, adding that Nigerians should be allowed to decide what they want.

“We are appealing that the ADC National leadership should ensure a credible and transparent primary election that will produce an acceptable candidate. Whoever wins the primary should be supported by all. If it is Peter Obi, if he remains in the coalition, he should not be denied the massive support,” the statement said.

  • Group slams Atiku, El-Rufai over ‘political opportunism’ at Buhari’s funeral

Group slams Atiku, El-Rufai over ‘political opportunism’ at Buhari’s funeral

A pro-democracy group, Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), has condemned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai for what it described as blatant political opportunism during the funeral rites of former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, the group’s Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji O. Bamidele, described the actions of the two political figures at the funeral as a “shameless and unseemly spectacle,” accusing them of attempting to exploit the solemn event for personal political advantage.

The statement reads, “Their actions, characterized by a shameless attempt to project themselves as genuine admirers and loyalists of a leader whose legacy they have historically opposed, are not only disingenuous but also an affront to the memory of President Buhari and the sentiments of the Nigerian people.

“As we gather to pay our respects to a leader who dedicated his life to the service of our nation, it is disheartening to witness two notorious political figures, Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai, attempting to capitalize on the sorrowful occasion for their own political gain.

“Their behavior at the funeral in Daura was nothing short of an unseemly spectacle, as they paraded around as though they owned the event, seeking to associate themselves with Buhari’s immense popularity in a desperate bid to win favor with the northern electorate.

“Let us remind the public that Atiku Abubakar has been a major political adversary of Buhari since 2003, challenging him in several elections and consistently undermining his agenda. His political history is marked by opportunism; after splintering the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he shifted allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC) only to abandon it once Buhari secured victory in the elections.

“Atiku’s return to the PDP was not born out of loyalty but rather a calculated move to further his own ambitions, culminating in his recent challenge against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is widely regarded as Buhari’s preferred successor.

“It is painfully clear that Atiku’s current display of affection for Buhari is nothing more than a façade, a mere attempt to manipulate the sentiments of the northern populace in a time of mourning.”

Reminding the two opposition leaders that the northern voters are not as easily deceived as they might hope, the group said, “The memories of their past betrayals and political machinations remain fresh in the minds of the electorate, and they will not be swayed by hollow gestures during this time of grief.”

Urging all Nigerians to remain vigilant and discerning in the face of such opportunism, as the nation honor the legacy of Buhari, Bamidele advised “let us not allow his memory to be tarnished by those who seek to exploit it for their own gain.”

The initiative then called on political actors to engage in genuine and respectful discourse, honoring the values that President Buhari stood for, integrity, service, and commitment to the Nigerian people.

“We reject the attempts of Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai to politicize the funeral of a beloved leader. We stand united in our belief that the politics of deception will not prevail, and we call upon the people of the North to remember the past and hold their leaders accountable.

“Let us honor President Buhari’s legacy by fostering a political environment rooted in sincerity and respect, free from the manipulative tactics of those who have historically sought to undermine it.” he advised.”

How to avert voter apathy in polls, by group

The Coalition of Political Parties in Lagos State (COPPILS) has called for the continuous education and enlightment of the electorate to avert voter apathy in future elections.

The group, comprising both registered and deregistered political parties, civil society organizations, and ethnic-based groups, said the the persistent apathy towards council polls is worrisome.

COPPILS said, “We advocate the formation of a tripartite engagement mechanism involving the state government, LASIEC, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), National Orientation Agency (NOA), Civil Societies and other relevant stakeholders to strategise on voters education, awareness, and participation ahead of the 2027 general election.”

It added, “We must collectively take urgent steps to reawaken the public interest in the electoral process and remind our citizens that voting

is not just a right; it is a civic responsibility and a powerful tool for change. We reaffirm our commitment to deepening democracy and strengthening democratic institutions in Lagos State and Nigeria at large.”

  • APC youth group urges Tinubu, Akpabio to back Sani Musa for national chairman

APC youth group urges Tinubu, Akpabio to back Sani Musa for national chairman

A prominent political advocacy group, the APC Youth Solidarity Network for Progressive Change, has called on President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio to urgently persuade Senator Mohammed Sani Musa to contest for the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement signed by its National President, Gideon Oche, the group said the APC must not leave its leadership to chance as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Describing Senator Musa as a “bridge between generations” and a “strategic institutional thinker,” the group said his leadership would be critical in rebuilding and repositioning the APC for long-term electoral success.

“The continued dominance of our party in Nigerian politics hinges not just on policy but on the strength, vision, and foresight of its internal leadership,” the statement read.

According to Oche, Senator Musa possesses the right blend of youthfulness and experience, idealism and wisdom, making him a uniquely qualified candidate to lead the party at this crucial time.

“We are making this patriotic call with the deepest sense of urgency. Senator Sani Musa is not just a ranking senator; he is a party man with deep institutional memory, strong political values, and a clear understanding of how to navigate the future,” he said.

The group urged President Tinubu and Senate President Akpabio to take a leading role in guiding the party toward a credible internal succession process that will promote unity and inspire confidence heading into the 2027 elections.

“2027 is not as far away as it seems. The next National Chairman of the APC will either lead this party into a new era of strategic coherence or preside over its decline. We believe Senator Mohammed Sani Musa is the kind of figure who can inspire cohesion, renew confidence in the party, and restore credibility to the APC’s national secretariat,” the statement reads.

Oche further noted that Senator Musa’s track record in the Senate, particularly as chairman of key committees on finance, electoral reform, and technology, has shown his capacity to lead with foresight and pragmatism.

He described the senator as a “seasoned politician and leader” whose background in public service and governance places him in a unique position to refocus the APC from within.

“In a time when political parties around the world are being tested for their relevance, the APC must not wait to be forced into crisis. It must take proactive steps to install a leadership that can inspire trust both within and beyond its membership. Senator Musa represents that quiet strength, that intelligent discipline, that deliberate vision the APC needs at this time,” the group said.

The statement warned against allowing political patronage or elite compromise to dictate the future of the party, saying the selection of the next National Chairman must be one rooted in merit, historical understanding, and national projection.

“We cannot approach 2027 with business as usual. We need a party leader who understands the stakes—who is respected in both the North and South, who is accessible to young people and the political establishment alike. Senator Musa is that person,” Oche insisted.

The group concluded by reiterating its call on President Tinubu and Senate President Akpabio to “kindly but firmly” encourage Senator Sani Musa to offer himself for national service through the position of National Chairman, saying history will judge their roles in shaping the party’s future.

“Posterity beckons. Senator Musa must now be called upon to serve—not out of ambition, but out of duty,” the statement added.

  • Group warns against attempts to disrupt Tinubu-Shettima alliance ahead of 2027

Group warns against attempts to disrupt Tinubu-Shettima alliance ahead of 2027

The Northern Vanguard (NV), a political advocacy group based in Abuja, has issued a strong warning to what it described as “desperate elements” allegedly working to undermine the growing synergy between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement on Thursday, the group’s President, Chief Edward Gulak, urged political detractors to end the “orchestrated campaign of discord” aimed at weakening the unity between the two leaders.

Chief Gulak described the current atmosphere in the presidency as one of “uncommon loyalty, harmony, and shared vision,” adding that any attempt to sow division between Tinubu and Shettima was “not only mischievous but deeply unpatriotic.”

“We are aware that some political merchants, driven by envy and personal bitterness, are hoping to manufacture a rift between President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in order to destabilise this administration ahead of 2027,” he said.

He noted that such individuals are disappointed by the strong and united front presented by the President and his Vice, contrasting it with the strained relationship that once existed between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his deputy, Atiku Abubakar.

Gulak also commended President Tinubu for what he described as “an inspired decision” in choosing Shettima as his running mate in 2023, noting that the former Borno State governor has fulfilled the expectations of his office with diligence and loyalty.

“Mr. President must be commended for the foresight he showed in picking Senator Kashim Shettima—a man of character, discipline, and strategic depth—as his partner in progress. Those who underestimated his impact in the corridors of power now recognise that Shettima brings much more than symbolic balance to this ticket; he brings substance,” Gulak said.

The Northern Vanguard went on to catalogue the vice president’s qualities, describing him as “a cerebral, loyal, and pragmatic public servant who has chosen to subordinate personal ambition to national interest.”

“Shettima is not just a former governor with experience; he is an intellectual force, a patriot, and one of the few leaders who fully understands the complexities of Nigeria’s security, economy, and regional dynamics,” Gulak added.

He warned that any attempt to ignite division between the two leaders will be resisted by Nigerians who value peace, cohesion, and continuity.

“Nigerians are not interested in palace gossip or recycled scripts of infighting. They want leadership that works, that listens, and that delivers. And that is exactly what this duo is offering. If you destabilise them, you destabilise Nigeria,” Gulak said.

According to the group, the ongoing loyalty and camaraderie between Tinubu and Shettima offer Nigeria a rare opportunity to build political stability that transcends election cycles.

“Those who wanted to turn the Villa into a boxing ring between principal and deputy must now accept that history will not repeat itself. Vice President Shettima has shown uncommon maturity and statesmanship. He has remained loyal to his principal, refrained from unnecessary headlines, and committed himself to the business of governance,” the statement read.

The group also called on the media and public commentators to be more discerning in their coverage and analysis, urging them to resist “subtle manipulations by agenda-driven actors who seek to invent crisis where none exists.”

As Nigeria’s political class begins to prepare for the 2027 polls, the Northern Vanguard urged all stakeholders to channel their energies toward nation-building rather than sowing seeds of suspicion and division.

“This administration needs focus, not friction. Those manufacturing conspiracy theories must be reminded that Nigerians are watching, and history will not be kind to those who choose sabotage over service,” Chief Gulak concluded.

Plateau communities will not surrender to attackers – Mutfwang

Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang has vowed that no Plateau community will surrender to assailants.

The Governor spoke during a sympathy visit to scene of attacks in Riyom community where 27 farmers were killed in Binda in Tahos Village, Riyom Local Government Area last Tuesday.

The Nation reports the heinous attack claimed innocent lives, left many others injured and resulted in the destruction of homes, including a church.

Food items belonging to villagers were also looted by the attackers, compounding the tragedy.

Mutfwang, according to a statement by the Director of Press and Public Affairs Gyang Bere, said: “Let me promise you, by the grace of God, Riyom will not fall and no community on the Plateau will fall to the assailants. We will deploy every resource at our disposal to end this genocide.

“This is not a case of farmer-herder conflict. This is terrorism; this is genocide, plain and simple. And I assure you, we will escalate this matter to the highest levels.”

Mutfwang acknowledged the efforts of gallant soldiers who have stood firm in defense of Plateau communities but noted that some bad elements within the security agencies must be identified and removed for peace to reign.

“We cannot continue like this. These attackers are not spirits, real people carried out these atrocities and vanished without a trace. Sector Commander, you were in command when suspects were arrested over a soldier’s death. Why are there no arrests today? Those young men currently held must be released immediately unless you have solid evidence to charge them to court,” the Governor demanded.

He urged the affected communities to find solace in God, assuring the government will organise a dignified burial for those killed and take steps to support those who lost their homes.

“To our elders and youth, please remain calm and vigilant. I thank our young people across these areas for their courage in defending their communities. We see you, we appreciate you, and we will continue to support you morally and otherwise to ensure that no one drives you from your ancestral lands.”

Mutfwang called on the security agencies to stop targeting scapegoats and go after the real perpetrators.

“I want to hear of arrests, not excuses. The era of so-called ‘unknown gunmen’ is over. These killers live among us and must be brought to justice. Let them serve as an example to deter others who plan to destabilize our communities.

“To our security forces: you are not here on a peacekeeping mission. You are deployed to protect the lives and property of Nigerians. Anyone threatening these lives is an enemy of the state and must be treated accordingly,” he emphasised.

The Governor also extended his visit to Gwong, Fang, Keng, and Rachi communities in Bachit District of Riyom LGA, all of which have recently suffered similar deadly attacks. He sympathized with the people, encouraging them to remain resilient and steadfast in defending their ancestral heritage.

Speaking during the visit, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Riyom LGA, Rev. Davou Musa, blamed the military for failing in its duty to protect the people. He accused some personnel of complicity by shielding the attackers and called on the Federal Government to withdraw the military from the area. He also appealed for urgent humanitarian relief to support the survivors.

He claimed he has better chances to emerge as Governor considering his structures across the 33 local government of the state.

According to him: “I’ve been in different places in the world and I’ve seeing how they are running their government. Oyo state shouldn’t lack some certain things.

While asked if he has the backing of Governor Seyi Makinde, Aborisade said the Governor will announce him as the flag bearer of the party in due time, adding he is better qualified than most of the aspirants.

He said: “I have the financial muscle to contest with anybody, I have the quality and financial backing, I will be next governor of Oyo state come 2027, people of the state should wait for good and better governance, they should wait for positive change.”

  • LASIEC presents Certificates of Return to council poll winners

LASIEC presents Certificates of Return to council poll winners

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has presented Certificates of Return to the Chairmen, Vice-Chairmen and Councillors-elect from the Saturday Local Government elections.

The ceremony, held at LASIEC Headquarters in Sabo, Yaba, Lagos, marked the official affirmation of the public’s mandate to those who will take over the new leadership in 57 local councils in the state.

The ceremony was witnessed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Lagos State Exco-led by Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi; his predecessor and Chairman APC Canpaign Council, Alhaji Babatunde Balogun; Party Secretary Adeola Jokomba; Women’s Leader Jumoke Okoya-Thomas and host of others.

LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, described the event as a monumental ceremony and a hallmark of democratic culture.

She expressed profound gratitude to God and all Lagos residents for their active participation and support throughout the electoral process.

“This event is more than a ceremony as it is the hallmark of democratic culture culminating in the actualization of resilient months of strategic planning, civic participation and institutional efforts,” Justice Okikiolu-Ighile stated.

The commission boss stated that over 24 per cent voters’ turnout was recorded in the poll as against 10 percent recorded in 2021.

This, she said, is unprecedented and a substantial improvement from the past editions.

“This is unprecedented, meaning that people came out more than they did in 2021. The increase is due to our robust voter awareness campaigns that utilized public transport branding and billboards across the state. Favorable weather conditions, with no excessive heat or rain, also contributed to voters’ comfort on the Election Day. Despite some initial difficulties for voters in locating their units, LASIEC provided vehicles to transport them to the correct polling stations after verification, ensuring all eligible voters had the opportunity to cast their ballots,” she said.

According to her, the number of polling units from about 8,000 in 2021 to 13,325 in 2025, helped reduce crowding and streamline the voting process.

She lauded the collective efforts of various stakeholders, including the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), candidates, security agencies, civil society organizations, traditional institutions, youth organizations, market men and women, faith-based organizations, persons living with disability (PWDs), the media, election observers, and the electorate.

She commended the professionalism and dedication of LASIEC staff and ad-hoc personnel, acknowledging the operational and logistical challenges encountered in the early hours of the exercise but praising their steadfast commitment.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile highlighted the peaceful nature of the elections, noting that observers reported it as one of the very peaceful elections for local government polls.

“I personally visited numerous polling units and received video evidence confirming the increased participation,” she said.

The Chairman extended appreciation to the security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, Army, Navy, Air Force, DSS, NSCDC, and Operation MESSA, for their zero-tolerance approach and effective deployment that maintained law and order.

She noted that reports of issues were promptly addressed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile announced that LASIEC would not be resting on its laurels.

She said: “A post-election retreat for members, Electoral Officers (EOs), and Assistant Electoral Officers (AEOs) is scheduled for next week to critically evaluate the process, address challenges such as late starts and material distribution and discuss instances of hostility faced by officials.

“The commission has also drawn a year-round timetable for continuous engagement, emphasizing voter education and regular stakeholder meetings. The goal is to make LASIEC a household name and clarify its functions, often confused with those of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).”

The Chairman reiterated that Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are not within LASIEC’s mandate, urging citizens to utilize INEC’s portal for PVC collection, transfers, or new registrations.

APC Lagos State Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, said the party was pleased with the outcome of the polls and pledged not to take the people’s trust and support for granted.

He said: “We thank the people of Lagos for believing in our party and giving us this victory. We worked hard for it and appreciate God for granting us strength and the wide acceptance shown by the people of Lagos State,” Ojelabi said.

He assured Lagos residents that the party would fulfill its campaign promises and its candidates would meet expectations across all local councils.

According to him, the party has established mechanisms to monitor its elected council officials and ensure they contribute meaningfully to the state’s development.

“By God’s grace, we shall meet that expectation.

Commending LASIEC, Ojelabi described the election as a successful and historic exercise that reflected the will of the people.

Chairman-elect of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Seyi Jakande, thanked the residents for voting for him.

Jakande, son of the late first Executive Civilian Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, recallsedthat late Jakande, who govern Lagos State between 1979 and 1983, left many unmatchable and imperishable impacts in the state.

According to him, most of the programmes being initiated in the council are for the peoples wellbeing, which are the steps of late Jakande.
