    • Begins registration of 1000 grassroots canvassers for Tinubu in 203 wards, 18 LGAs

Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to unite, intensify grassroots mobilization, and canvass more supporters in preparation for the 2027 general elections in support of President Bola Tinubu.

The governor made the appeal during the weekend at an expansive stakeholders’ meeting of the party in Akure, where he also briefed party leaders on his administration’s developmental achievements and ongoing plans.

According to Aiyedatiwa, the Renewed Hope Initiative of President Tinubu is deliberately designed to strengthen the grassroots base of the APC with a target of registering at least 1,000 new members in each ward across of the state.

“This is our party, and it is our collective responsibility to make it stronger. The Renewed Hope Initiative has been structured to build the party from the grassroots, and our target is nothing less than one thousand new members per ward.

“We must mobilize, we must organize, and we must be consistent in our engagements. Regular stakeholders meetings such as this are meant to keep us united, informed, and ready for the future,” he said.

On his administration’s development strides, the governor disclosed that efforts were ongoing to attract major investors into the state to revamp the economy.

“We have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a cement factory, a fertilizer plant, and a petrochemical industry in Ondo State. These are strategic projects that will create jobs and boost the state’s economy.

“I want to assure our people that all our ongoing infrastructural projects, including those inherited by this administration, will be completed.

“In addition, we are taking steps to assume responsibility for some federal roads in order to ease the burden on our people. Beyond the Ikare-Akungba Akoko, Idanre-Akure, and Okitipupa-Igbokoda road projects that are already in motion, we will not hesitate to intervene in other critical road corridors to enhance connectivity,” the governor added.

In his remarks, the State APC Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, commended governor Aiyedatiwa for convening the meeting and for sustaining regular interaction with party stakeholders.

Adetimehin also emphasized the need for leaders and members to return to the grassroots to consolidate the party’s strength.

“We must all go back to our wards and local governments and redouble our efforts. This is our party, and there is no other party for us apart from the APC. Unity and commitment at the grassroots are critical if we want to sustain our dominance. Come rain, come shine, our identity remains APC, and we must carry that banner with pride.

“There is no division in our party. The government and the party remain one. Members of the party must conduct themselves in a way that respects the supremacy of the party,” he said.

The Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Victor Olabimtan, reaffirmed that the APC remained united and indivisible in his constituency.

“In our area, the APC is one. There are no factions, no divisions. We are solidly behind the governor and the party leadership, and we will continue to work in unity to ensure our strength is felt across the state,” Mr Olabimtan said.

Lauding governor Aiyedatiwa’s performance in the state, the Director, Corporate Services of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde described the governor’s developmental strides as visible across all 18 local government areas of the state.

“Mr Governor [Aiyedatiwa] you have done well, and you are still doing well. Your developmental initiatives can be seen across the entire state. The only thing left is to encourage you to do even more.”

While the last presidential election was successful, we believe that with more work and greater mobilization, the APC can achieve an even higher margin of victory in 2027,” Abegunde declared.

Other leaders who spoke at the meeting, including High Chief Jamiu Ekungba and Chief Agboola Kelly, lauded Governor Aiyedatiwa’s for the regular engagement of party leaders and members.

The meeting was attended by top political leaders, including the Deputy Governor, Dr. Olayide Adelami; former Deputy Governor, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo; Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji; Secretary to the State Government, Dr Taiwo Fasoranti, among other prominent stakeholders.

  • How Aiyedatiwa runs Ondo government

    How Aiyedatiwa runs Ondo government

Ondo State Commissioner for Information Idowu Ajanaku spoke with reporters on the focus of the Aiyedatiwa administration, infrastructural development, strategies for  improving security, and futile efforts by the opposition to enlarge its coast in the Subshine State. Excerpts by EMMANUEL OLADESU.

What is the focus of the Ayedatiwa Government?

“Our Ease” is an elaborate and effective encapsulation of the focus of the Ayedatiwa’s Government. It is not just a cliché but a well thought out programme of action for a comprehensive development of Ondo State from the present level to a national and global reckoning. The various components of “OUR EASE” are: Order, Urban and Rural Development through Agriculture and Blue Economy, Revolutionary Technological Advancement and Industrialisation, Efficient Healthcare and Socio-economic Welfare, Adequate Power and Affordable Energy, Sustainable Infrastructural Development and Tourism and last but not the least is Education, Human Capital Development and Entrepreneurship. The focus has been the pursuit of each of this 7-Point Agenda towards an all encompassing development of the State from the rural areas and to the urban areas without neglecting any part of the State. Let me give you more but brief explanation of each of the components or pillars of Our Ease:

The first which is Order, Security and the Rule of Law has to do with strengthening the capacity of our security agencies, improve intelligence gathering and sharing, enhance community policing and engagement; and address the root causes of crimes. This is to ensure that timely response by our security agencies to security concerns and challenges towards ensuring that our State is safe and secure for all citizens, investors and visitors. This Government is also committed to upholding the Rule of Law and to promote an Independent Judiciary and efficient administration of justice in our State; This to ensure that our courts remain a beacon of hope and justice for the common man.

The second is Urban and Rural Development through Agriculture and Blue Economy a comprehensive programme aimed at the improvement of agricultural productivity, enhancement of access to markets and credit for farmers, investment in rural infrastructure and promotion of the development of the Blue Economy. The urban renewal policy is aimed at encouraging more influx of private investors across the globe. The government also aimed at unlocking and exploring the abundant economic opportunities around the sea for the benefit of our people. The State is being reset by the special grace of God to be transformed into a major agricultural hub and a leading player in the blue economy, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. The blue economy boasts of diverse components, including established traditional ocean industries such as fisheries, tourism, and maritime transport; and also new and emerging activities, such as offshore renewable energy, aquaculture, seabed extractive activities, and marine biotechnology and bioprospecting. The Almighty God through providence has blessed us with huge ocean resources; the Government is determined to leverage on these, for economic growth and improved livelihood for the good people of Ondo State. This will also be by providing the enabling environment for private citizens and willing investors to promote these marine activities in a sustainable way for the economic prosperity of our dear State.

The third one, Revolutionary Technological Advancement and Industrialisation is about massive investment in research and development, enhancement of access to technology and infrastructure for businesses, promotion of the development of special economic zones and industrial parks and encouraging  entrepreneurship and innovation. This is with a view to repositioning our State as a hub for technological innovation and industrialisation, creating new opportunities for businesses and jobs for our citizens, especially the teeming unemployed youths. The Ayedatiwa Government is paying special attention to the five Technical Schools in the three senatorial districts of the State to be able to produce reliable, supportive and mid-level skilled manpower to service the labour requirements for all categories of industries in the State.

The fourth pillar of Our Ease is Efficient Healthcare and Socio-economic Welfare. Top priority is being given to investment in healthcare infrastructure, enhancement of access to quality healthcare services, improvement of the quality of healthcare services through training, capacity building and promoting health education and awareness. This administration is investing in a social investment scheme to reduce the level of poverty in the State and also to ensure that the most vulnerable in the State are taken care of, in order to feel the impact of government. This is to ensure that our citizens have access to quality healthcare services and that our State becomes a model for efficient healthcare delivery. The Ondo State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme – ORANGHIS has been extended beyond the public servants to accommodate people in the informal sector such as artisans, traders, market women, farmers, commercial transport operators and private sector workers.

The fifth component is Adequate Power and Affordable Energy: The focus is on power generation and distribution, promoting the use of renewable energy and enhancement access to affordable energy for our citizens. The government is committed to ensuring that our State has a reliable and efficient power supply, to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for our citizens. The ongoing Independent Power Plant Project at Omotosho shall be completed in record time for the benefit of our people. There is the laudable O’DATIWA MASS METERS programme through which our people across the State are being supplied with prepaid meters at government -subsidised rates to enable them enjoy electricity supply and eliminate the incidents of overbilling by electricity providers. The people response in terms of patronage has been huge and the excitement serves as an encouragement to government.

Sixth is Sustainable Infrastructural Development and Tourism. This administration aims to transform our State into a leading tourist destination while promoting sustainable infrastructural development. This is intended to be achieved by investing in eco-friendly infrastructure, developing tourist facilities, and promoting cultural heritage preservation. The focus is on creating an enabling environment that supports the growth of the tourism sector, while ensuring that our infrastructural development is environment friendly, sustainable and socially responsible. We shall ensure that all the on-going infrastructure projects across the three senatorial zones of Ondo State are completed within the tenure of our administration. The ultimate outcome of this pillar will be to create a thriving tourism industry that generates employment opportunities, stimulates economic growth, and enhances quality of life for our people. We envision a future where our State is renowned for its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. By achieving this vision, we will not only improve the livelihoods of our citizens but also preserve our cultural identity and protect our environment for future generations.

The seventh Pillar which is the last but not the least is not the least is Education, Human Capital Development and Entrepreneurship. This is concerned about huge investment in education and skills development. It is to ensure that our citizens continue to have access to quality education and vocational skills training, enabling them to compete in the global economy and drive economic growth in our dear State. This administration is poised to invest more in critical infrastructure in our primary and secondary schools, ensuring there are functional libraries and laboratories. Ayedatiwa has began to invest in the provision and development of human resources in our schools evidenced in the recent employment of over 2,000 teachers. The challenges we inherited in our tertiary institutions is being tackled headlong to ensure good welfare for the staff and investing in their critical infrastructure so that the tertiary institutions in the State can continue to maintain their heights and records as the best State tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

How representative or inclusive is the administration in respect of the distribution of developmental projects across the districts and zones?

All the major infrastructures are distributed across the 3 senatorial district and no district is excluded. Across the 203 wards of the State, there is one construction or other going on. There State Executive council recently approved that 5km road should be rehabilitated, repaired or constructed across all the Local government areas. This is in partnership with the World Bank where the state has provided almost 4Billion naira as our counterpart funding. From Akoko to Akure and Ilaje the impact of this government is being felt.

How is the governor making efforts to increase or expand the internally generated revenue base?

This effort of government is visible and measureable. This has reflected in the increase in the IGR according to the Ondo State Board of Internal Revenue (OSBIR), 28.1 Billion naira was generated in the first quarter of this year 2025.

The government has signed an MOU with a refinery with the capacity to produce 500,000 barrels of Oil per day. BUA Cement is also coming to Okeluse to uilise the Limestone deposit there for cement production. The provision of infrastructure in the State has been yielding results; for example in 2012 there were only a few radio station in the state this has increased to almost 21 stations today. Many modern hotels are rising up in the highbrow area like Ijapo, Alagbaka in recent times. The state is partnering with private organizations to build new estates to provide affordable housing for the people of Ondo State.

Dr. Lucky Ayedatiwa is determined to change the narrative of Ondo State from beign described and seen as a civil service state to an Industralised State. He is poised to edge his name in gold in the mould of the founding fathers of the State like Pa Adekunle Ajasin. You must also agree that this is not unconnected with his background as a businessman which makes this industrialization agenda a familiar turf for him. And by the grace of God he will transform this sate from the pedestrian level to global relevance in terms of industrialisation and business outlook which would be very attractive for investors. This will provide jobs and impact greatly in the IGR of the state.

Could you offer an insight into the Legislative/Executive relationship?

This relationship is perfect and harmonious because of the open door policy of the Governor, Dr Ayedatiwa. Even though he is a believer in the independence of the 3 arms of government, he also believes that they should work together for the development of the State and the benefit of the people of Ondo State. The Speaker has been very helpful to the agenda of Mr Governor to uplift the State and people of Ondo State.

There is  mutual respect which has resulted in the seamless way the Legislature and Executive has been operating in the State and it promises to get better which is a good thing for the people of the State. The Governor believes that nothing good can be achieved in an atmosphere of rancor and crisis and would do everything possible to maintain this atmosphere.

There are allegations of a cold war between the governor and his deputy, who is said to be complaining in huss tones that he is being sidelined?

That is a fallacy and the handiwork of detractors whose sole aim is to cause a wedge between the Governor and his deputy. Recall that the Deputy Governor himself had denied all these claims. Please perish the thought. Moreso, the Deputy Governor is a technocrat and seasoned administrator whose relationship with the Governor goes beyond the office but are united in their zeal and passion for the development of Ondo State. The jinx of Governor- Deputy Governor rancor in this state is permanently broken by Ayedatiwa-Adelami combo! This is what the enemies and people with small minds can not fathom or understand.

Other governors have been inviting the president to commission laudable projects in their states. Does it mean that Aiyedatiwa has nothing to show?

The fact is that Ayedatiwa has just been sworn this year for his first term in office. The previous time spent was to complete the 2nd term of Mr. Olowarotimi Akeredolu, SAN in office; you must remember the cold war and crisis of that period. We must credit him for how he was able to navigate that period and kept the ship of State afloat. He has continued to meticulously pursue sustainable and progressive development of the State. Several Road construction projects are ongoing and are projected to be completed all over the State. For example the overhead Bridge at Irese road Akure is near completion; The Akungba-Ikare Road dualisation is ongoing.

The coastal road between Ilaje – Ibeju Lekki which is been constructed in collaboration with NDDC is almost completed and this will make it possible to drive from Epe to Ondo State within 30 minutes. About 60km Araromi beach roads is being constructed and will soon be completed. Remember that I talked about a world bank assisted initiative with counterpart funding is opening up the rural areas of the state? The initiative is reffered to as RAMP and Ondo State government contribution is about 4Billion naira.

There is the Omi Irorun Waters whch us a comprehensive effort to make clean water available for the masses of the state being. There is a projection to make pipe borne water available to people of Ondo State which would be rolled out soon.

Let me assure you that by February next year when Ondo State would be clocking 50, the President and Commander-in-Chief will be in the State to commission projects; it will be a Big Deal.

How is the government reinvigorating the security outfit, Amotekun, to foster security in the state?

The Ayedatiwa government believes that development can only thrive in an atmosphere  of peace and as such do not take the issue of security in the State lightly. The Amotekun remains a prime outfit that the State has been able to showcase to the world. Only recently the United nation recognized Amotekun as a model for community policing that can be recommended to other States. Dr Lucky Ayedatiwa also recently distributed 50 high grade operational Toyota Hilux vehicles to security agencies in the State in addition to the 25 units distributed last year. It is a verifiable fact that the various interventions by Government has stemmed the tide of criminality in the State, even though it seems to be an unending game. The Government is ready to outmatch criminals in the State and to clearly let them know there is no hiding place for them here.

Why is the governor centralising the endorsement campaigns for the president?

It is not true that the Governor is centralizing these groups for any ulterior motive. The APC members are free to create any group for the purpose of planning, pursuing and actualizing  the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. However we must accept the fact that the Governors as the leader of the party in the State should provide leadership and ensure that there is harmony because a house divided against itself shall not stand. What the Governor is doing is to make sure that fifth columnists do not hide under any guise to cause confusion that could injure the success of the re-election of our President who is our leader.

Again as the leader of the party in the State the Governor has done a lot to unite the members of the party and rally them for the President Ahmed Tinubu re-election. For example he recently convened the first ever caucus meeting of the APC in the State where the President was endorsed for a second term in office. He has also convened the Gubernatorial Advisory Council with Pa Pius Akinyelure as the Chairman and other notable chieftains of the party as members.

Is your party not threatened by the moves by the ADC Coalition to offer a challenge ahead of 2037?

It is laughable that in a State where the PDP, a party that was once in control, is completely overshadowed you can be talking of ADC or ADC coalition. There is no coalition in Ondo State. Even nationally they are not a threat, this is just an association of frustrated and confused politician who have nothing to offer Nigerians.

  • Controversy over zoning in PDP

    Controversy over zoning in PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is split over zoning. Although the National Executive Committee (NEC) has zoned the presidential slot to the South, the three northern zones are kicking. In the South, the camp of Nyesom Wike has also objected to the micro-zoning of party offices ahead of the November 15 convention. Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU examines the hurdles before the main opposition party ahead of 2027 polls.

There is no political party in the country that is insulated from crisis. It may be due to the fact that politics, usually, is characterised by conflicts. But, it appears the most troubled and crisis-ridden today is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is able to manage its crisis, being the party in power with a formidable and towering national leader as president. Also, the crisis resolution mechanism appears strong and effective.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is the PDP faction, that revolves around former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, had borrowed, is ailing. Old members are resisting the defectors. The party is not able to enlarge its coast, with Its spead and reach being restricted to the faction that dropped out of the mainstream PDP.

The Labour Party (LP), like an amoeba, has no taproot. It is always lurking in the corner, looking for borrowers, who would adopt the platform and dump it after election. Crisis-ridden, devoid of focus and lacking an effective leadership, it groans in pains.

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso may not been looking for allies beyond its so-called stronghold, Kano State.

Yet, the outcome of the recent by-elections showed that PDP cannot be totally dismissed with a wave of the hand. Currently, it is weak. But it has the chance of bouncing back, if the stalwarts close ranks and agree on strategies.

There is no evidence to suggest that the gladiators in the party can unite ahead of the next general election.

Two issues that have polarised the party are micro-zoning of party offices, and zoning of the presidential ticket.

The 102nd NEC meeting in Abuja on August 25 zoned the 2027 presidential ticket to the South and the national chairman to the North.

The Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, who read the NEC resolutions,  said: “Having retained the position of National Chairman in the North, the presidential ticket of the party for the 2027 general elections is hereby zoned to the Southern region.

“The zones should immediately micro-zone positions within its zones for implementation.”

BoT member Chief Olabode George, who hailed the decision, said the mistake of the past has been corrected. “Zoning will bring unity and ensure fairness and justice, and remove the fear of domination, marginalisation and exclusion,” he added.

However, the camp of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), rejected micro-zoning. Former Benue State Governor Sam Ortom, a member of the group, reiterated its objection, saying: “There should be no micro-zoning of offices, beyond the general zoning formula already adopted by the National Executive Committee (NEC) to maintain peace and stability.”

Besides, the camp demanded the cancellation of micro-zoning as one of the conditions for a hitch-free national convention.

Presidential rotation or zoning, which is perceived as a long standing tradition in the party, is now a bone of contention. The protagonists believe that it would foster equity, fairness and justice while giving every zone a sense of belonging. Although the party split over the neglect of zoning in 2023, the option is failing to measure up as a corrective strategy ahead of 2027.

Historically, PDP has always voiced zoning, not as a constitutional provision, but based on convention or tradition. But, there was never a time the party adhered strictly to the method in the last 26 years. For example, in 1999 and 2003, former Vice President Alex Ekwueme competed for the ticket when majority had tilted support towards Olusegun Obasanjo.

In 2007, chieftains from the South and North unfolded their ambitions before Umaru Yar’Adua was eventually picked.

In 2023, stalwarts from almost the geo-political regions battled for the ticket till the eve of the convention when some aspirants withdrew from the race.

What is striking is that while the refusal of the party to zone the ticket to the South polarised the platform and contributed to its defeat in 2023, zoning to the South ahead of 2027 is also dividing the party.

Party sources said there is no agreement on zoning because there was no wider consultation before it was adopted. Therefore, northern zones believe that they are being alienated, sidelined and marginalised. Also, it is believed that zoning was a key factor in Atiku’s defection because his group prempted the party leadership.

The Northcentral is particularly bitter. On Wednesday, North Central support groups for Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim’s 2027 presidential bid, rejected the party’s position on zoning at the PDP Secretariat in Jos, capital of Plateau State.

The protesters, who came from Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau states, described the zoning decision as “a blatant disregard for fairness, equity and justice.” According to the aggrieved members, the move smacked of internal sabotage, adding that only elements loyal to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or “moles within the PDP” could have orchestrated the “undemocratic act.”

“The North Central has always stood by the PDP, yet we are now being denied the opportunity to produce the president. This is not only unfair but also dangerous for the unity of our party and the country,” their spokesman  said.

In their opinion, the country needs a competent leadership rather than sectional arrangements. They maintained that prioritizing geographical zoning over merit risks deepening divisions and weakening national unity.

Reaffirming their commitment to Hashim’s presidential ambition, the groups said: “We believe Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has the vision, leadership skills, and character to lead Nigeria to peace, stability, and prosperity. His emergence as PDP’s presidential candidate will open a new chapter for the country.”

Although popular four years ago, zoning is now a divisive and destabilising issue in PDP. Its resurrection, in the opinion of the antagonists, is “simply regressive,” adding that it ignores inclusivity, fairness and merit over sectional arrangements.

To Olawepo-Hashim, who has declared his intention to run for president, the party should have a rethink. “Zoning is unlawful; I’ll contest for the presidency,” he said in a statement, adding: “It is unpopular and driven by selfish interests.”

Olawepo stressed: “That purported NEC decision was organised by a few people for selfish reasons. It is illegal and unpopular, as you can see from the deluge of protests from party members across the country.

“The Electoral Act 2022 does not empower political parties to impose conditions such as zoning on aspirants beyond what is expressly provided in the Nigerian Constitution. Even the ruling APC avoided being trapped by zoning controversies. The PDP should correct “the grave error.”

Hashim has consistently maintained that only a president chosen on the basis of competence and patriotism can fix Nigeria’s challenges. He stressed that historical precedent in the PDP supports an open presidential contest.

“Even in 1999, when there was strong sentiment for accommodating the South-West due to the annulment of June 12, candidates from the North such as Alhaji Abubakar Rimi were not barred from contesting. The same happened in 2002, when President Olusegun Obasanjo, then a sitting president, faced aspirants from the North like Chief Barnabas Gemade and Alhaji Abubakar Rimi,” he recalled.

Hashim also cited Nigeria’s voting history as evidence that zoning is unnecessary.

He said: “On June 12, 1993, the great people of Kano set ethnicity aside and voted for Chief M.K.O. Abiola against Alhaji Bashir Tofa, their kinsman. More recently, in the 2023 elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu won in Northern Nigeria against Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a Northern candidate, yet lost his home state Lagos to a candidate from another zone. This shows Nigerians are capable of making political decisions without bowing to ethnic or sectional instincts.”

In Kano, a party chieftain, Aminu Bala Wudilawa, told Freedom Radio that political trends in the North favour competence and capacity over sectional arrangements. He alleged that only a few politicians eyeing the vice presidential slot were pushing for zoning to the South.

“It is null and void and a violation of both the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022. Section 84(3) of the Electoral Act explicitly states that no political party can impose additional conditions on aspirants beyond what is provided for in the constitution.

“Zoning has no legal basis; it is at best a gentleman’s agreement. The constitution guarantees every qualified Nigerian the right to aspire to any office, and PDP cannot take that away,” Wudilawa stressed.

Echoing Olawepo-Hashim, he recalled that in 1999, despite zoning, Obasanjo faced stiff competition at the PDP primary and in 2003, he was challenged by northern politicians, including the late Alhaji Abubakar Rimi and Barnabas Gemade.

Wudilawa pointed out that the PDP National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, recently told the BBC Hausa Service that the NEC resolution would not bar any northerner from contesting the presidency.

Describing zoning as,a joke, he said: “We are calling on all interested northerners not to be discouraged. The contest should be open, democratic and fair. The PDP belongs to all the six zones.”

A group, the Cultural Middle Belt Renaissance Forum (CMRF), urged the party leadership  to revisit the contentious issue. It warned that zoning has implications for the party’s popularity and relevance, particularly in the Middle Belt.

The General Secretary, Prince D.I. Onucheyo, said PDP should embrace a more inclusive approach, recognising the region’s ability to generate leaders capable of moving the country forward.

He described zoning as a betrayal of the Middle Belt’s justifiable hopes for political leadership and representation.

Onucheyo said the Middle Belt region has credible, visionary, and seasoned leaders with the requisite experience, integrity, and innovative ideas to steer the affairs of the country.

He added: “The Middle Belt deserves better. Nigeria deserves better. It’s high time our political leaders recognised the region’s potential and allowed us the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s leadership.

“We stand united in our resolve to ensure that the voices of the Middle Belt are heard and respected in the corridors of power. We will not stand idly by while decisions that affect our collective future are made without our input. The demand for a presidential ticket is not just about political representation, but also about recognizing the region’s potential and contributions to Nigeria’s development.”

The forum said the PDP’s decision to zone the presidential ticket to the South without consulting the Middle Belt region meant that it is not bothered about the support of the region.

Declare war on insecurity, Obi urges FG

Mr Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to declare war on insecurity, saying that no nation can prosper while its citizens live under siege.

Obi  posted this on his X handle on Monday,  while reacting to reports that more than 100 people were killed in violent attacks across Borno, Sokoto, Katsina, and Edo states over the weekend.

According to the former governor of Anambra, the killing of eight officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the abduction of a Chinese national in Edo, the kidnapping of passengers on the Benin–Iyere–Oluku road calls for emergency.

“The slaughter of five soldiers and 58 civilians in Borno are not isolated tragedies, these are stark evidence that Nigeria is in the grip of a full-blown security emergency.

“My deepest condolences go to the families of our fallen heroes, their courage reminds us that we still have men and women who are willing to risk everything for our safety.

“Their killers must be swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. Their sacrifices must never be forgotten.

“When over 100 Nigerians are killed in a single weekend, our casualty figures rival those of countries officially at war”, he said.

He explained that it’s time to declare a national war on insecurity, to mobilise every resource, every agency, every state, and to suspend all distractions while we begin the process of reclaiming our nation from lawlessness.

“No nation can prosper while its live under siege, history shows that insecurity is the quickest path to national collapse, Somalia and Libya stands as painful warnings.

“We must act now, with urgency and courage, to prevent a total descent into anarchy and rebuild Nigeria into a safe, secure, and productive nation for all.

Civil society coalition alleges plot to blackmail Tinubu’s anti-corruption drive, EFCC leadership

A coalition of civil society organisations under the aegis of the National Interest Coalition (NICO) has raised the alarm over an alleged plot to blackmail and destabilise President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s anti-corruption efforts and the leadership of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the convener of the group, Comrade Bashir Saleh Abdu, alleged that some top government officials are funding a coordinated campaign against the EFCC under its Chairman, Olanipekun Olukoyede.

He claimed that billions of naira in stolen public funds are being deployed to undermine the anti-graft agency, distract President Tinubu, and derail the anti-corruption agenda.

“They want to divert attention from the ongoing investigations that have exposed their dirty dealings, thereby sabotaging the government and empowering its enemies,” Abdu said.

The group further alleged that secret meetings have been held with dissident figures and sponsored campaigns aimed at smearing the image of the President, EFCC, and the Department of State Services (DSS).

NICO called on President Tinubu to remain resolute and urged the EFCC leadership not to be intimidated, stressing that no one—regardless of status—should be allowed to evade justice.

The coalition also appealed to civil society groups, labour unions, student bodies, religious leaders, the media, and patriotic Nigerians at home and abroad to stand in defence of the nation’s future.

“We stand today at a very critical junction in our nation’s history. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came into the office with a clear promise—to renew hope, clean up the rot in our public institutions, and make the government work again for the people.

“One of the boldest fronts of this renewed hope agenda is the war against corruption—a war that Nigerians of conscience must not allow to be sabotaged. Since May 29, 2023, the Tinubu administration has made unprecedented strides in strengthening the anti-corruption framework and reforming the criminal justice system. Among the key milestones are.

“Granting the EFCC and ICPC free hands to investigate and prosecute powerful individuals without political interference, including those holding top government positions and heads of government business organizations.

“Overhauling the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and other fiscal controls to block leakages and wastage of public funds. Expanding the use of technology in revenue generation and monitoring to curb corruption in tax administration, ports, and customs.

“Strengthening the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) to ensure faster trials, discourage frivolous adjournments, and guarantee that corruption cases no longer drag endlessly in court.

“Promoting inter-agency collaboration that allows the EFCC, ICPC, CCB, NFIU, and law enforcement to operate in synergy.

“These reforms have rekindled public confidence that, at last, Nigeria may be on the path to real accountability.

“Similarly, under the able leadership of Mr. Olanipekun Olukoyede, the EFCC has recorded landmark achievements within a short period. These include the recovery of billions of Naira in stolen assets and funds, some of which have already been returned to victims of fraud and government coffers.

“Launching a crackdown on internet fraudsters and financial crimes, with hundreds of convictions secured across various courts in the country.

“Prosecution of high-profile politically exposed persons, sending a strong message that there are no longer sacred cows.”

The group then commended the anti-corruption agency for establishing a more victim-focused compensation system, where fraud victims now benefit directly from EFCC’s recovery efforts.

“Driving institutional reforms within the Commission to improve efficiency, professionalism, and transparency. For the first time in many years, Nigerians are seeing renewed energy in high-profile investigations, asset recoveries, and the fearless pursuit of powerful persons who once believed themselves untouchable. This has sent a clear signal: the era of business as usual is over,” NICO said.

The group stated that corruption had decided to fight back, adding that credible reports have confirmed that “some embattled men—individuals already facing corruption-related cases, some of whom still occupy sensitive positions in government—have drawn up a grand conspiracy to frustrate this anti-corruption crusade. These desperate men, terrified of the long arm of the law, are now deploying billions of stolen public funds to blackmail the EFCC leadership, to undermine President Tinubu’s anti-corruption drive, and to destabilize this government.

“Their tactics are clear: Orchestrated media attacks designed to smear the name of the EFCC Chairman, Mr. Olukoyede, and weaken public trust in the Commission.

“Sponsorship of propaganda to paint the anti-graft war as selective, thereby discouraging public support. Deployment of allies in and out of government, including certain serving senior officials, to distract the President and derail his administration’s progress.

“Attempting to instigate confusion and crisis, all to divert attention from their ongoing cases and shield themselves from justice.

“This is not just an attack on Mr. Olukoyede; this is not just an attack on the EFCC. This is a direct attack on President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, on the future of Nigeria’s children, and on the millions of Nigerians who demand a government that works for them, not for corrupt elites.

“We must make it clear: we will not allow this sinister agenda to succeed! We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remain steadfast, undistracted, and unyielding. Nigerians are watching, Nigerians are with you, and Nigerians demand that this anti-corruption war be taken to its logical conclusion. The EFCC must not be cowed, the Chairman must not be intimidated, and no thief—no matter how highly placed—must be allowed to escape justice.

“This country belongs to over 200 million Nigerians, not to a handful of corrupt men hiding behind propaganda. We refuse to be silent while they fund chaos with our stolen money. Let the world hear us: We stand with President Tinubu. We stand with the EFCC. We stand with Olanipekun Olukoyede. And we stand with justice. The fight is not just for today—it is for generations unborn.”

  • X-raying six strategic pillars of BAO’s administration

X-raying six strategic pillars of BAO’s administration

By JMO Ekundayo & Toba Fatunla

Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” – Warren Bennis

When Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO) assumed office as the Governor of Ekiti State, he promised not just governance, but transformation—anchored on six strategic actionable pillars. Today, barely into his third year, his administration has delivered on those promises across all sectors, ensuring inclusive growth and quality service delivery to the people of Ekiti State; from youth development to infrastructural expansion, BAO’s exemplary leadership has placed Ekiti on a strong developmental trajectory.

Below is an in-depth look at each of the six strategic actionable pillars and how they are shaping a new narrative for Ekiti:

    Youth development & job creation

Recognizing the potential of Ekiti’s vibrant youth population, Governor Oyebanji launched a multi-layered agenda to empower and equip them:

    – Ekiti State Youth Policy (2024–2028) was unveiled to guide youth empowerment and governance participation.

    – The government launched an MSME/ICT Hub backed by a ₦223.8 million fund, fostering digital entrepreneurship.

    – Over 922 MSMEs received direct grants, and CAC registration support was provided for 5,400 enterprises.

    – Access to finance was broadened with a ₦1 billion cooperative fund and another ₦1 billion in partnership with Access Bank and USADF for women-led groups and youth cooperatives.

    – About 5000 Youths have been engaged to bring back youths into the Agric program in synergy with YSJ Farms.

These initiatives have positioned Ekiti’s youth not as dependents, but as drivers of innovation and economic growth, contributing massively to food security in Ekiti State.

    Human capital development

A cornerstone of sustainable development, the administration made decisive investments in education and healthcare:

    – Over 2,000 new teachers were recruited, with sign-language interpreters added to promote inclusive education. And another recruitment process to recruit teaching and non-teaching staff is ongoing.

    – N14 billion was invested in renovating 203 public secondary schools. Running grants, instructional materials, and WAEC/NECO fees totalling ₦1.2 billion were fully covered by the state.

    – In health, the administration harmonized salary structures with federal standards and restored hazard allowances.

    – Eleven health facilities were upgraded with a state-of-the-art facility, and the Ulerawa health insurance scheme now covers over 50,000 rural beneficiaries.

    – Different capacity development training programmes have been put together to up the skills of the civil servants in the State.

    – These actions have significantly raised education and health outcomes, ensuring equitable access to quality services.

    Agriculture & rural development

Understanding the link between food security, poverty reduction, and rural prosperity, the BAO administration prioritized this sector:

    – 43.4 km of rural roads were reconstructed across six LGAs, while the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing (RAAMP) is currently constructing new farm access roads across the State.

    – Farmers benefited from subsidized seedlings and equipment, including a 50% reduction in seed prices and 25% tractor-use subsidy.

    – A model cashew scion farm was established in collaboration with USDA’s Pro‑Cashew Project.

    – Support reached 2,279 farmers through input distribution, and 1,566 small-scale farms received poultry and farm support kits.

    – About 4,500 ha of land have been cleared so far for cooperatives/communities/farmers’ charge across the State, ensuring farmers do not spend on opening up the arable lands.

    – Land Tractorization is 50% subsidized also in Ekiti State

    – About 150 youths are involved in Broiler Production under the Ekiti Broiler Production Scheme (EBOPS) and have raised more than 100,000 birds so far.

The administration’s efforts have enhanced food productivity, enabled access to markets, and invigorated rural economies.

    Infrastructure & industrialization

Governor Oyebanji’s administration has taken bold steps to bridge infrastructure gaps and industrialize Ekiti:

     – Commissioned a 3.5 MW Independent Power Plant to address power deficits, energizing Ayekire/Gbonyin and Ekiti East LGAs for the first time in over a decade.

    – About 36 roads projects are either completed or on-going gulping up to N130 billion. For instance, roads like Ado/Ilawe, Omisanjana, NTA/GRA, and parts of Ado Township were rehabilitated, while work on the Ado Flyover and Ring Road continues.

    – Initiated construction/rehabilitation of 36 roads since inception – 17 completed, 19 ongoing road projects at the moment.

    – Solar street lights were installed across the capital, and massive drainage desilting exercises have curbed flooding.

    – Under the community impact projects, almost all communities are having one project or another ongoing. If it’s not a palace renovation, it is a community town hall renovation, borehole planting, community roads opening amongst other projects.

    – Free distribution of transformers to communities in need of such to boost electricity.

    – Connection of institutions to the IPP for stable 24/7 electricity (Ekiti State Government Secretariat, Governor’s office, EKSUTH, EKTV, EKSU, BSES, etc

    – Ekiti International Cargo Airport completed and ready for non-scheduled flight. Likely, in December 2025, the airport will commence scheduled flights.

These infrastructural upgrades are improving mobility, connectivity, economic emancipation and wellness in the trajectory towards the “shared prosperity” mantra of the BAO administration.

    Arts, culture & tourism

The state’s rich cultural heritage and natural attractions are now being harnessed for tourism and economic diversification:

    – Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort has been repositioned through a public-private partnership to boost tourism.

    – The administration launched the International Arts and Cultural Centre (construction, on-going as we speak), and is developing an Indoor Sports Complex to nurture talents.

    – The Kayode Oluyemi Stadium is receiving a befitting facelift to enhance the capacity and preparedness of our sports men and women.

    – Sacred sites like Oke Igeti are being promoted for religious tourism, boosting spiritual and cultural identity.

    – Remodelling of Fajuyi Park to an Intentional tourist site has been approved by Exco recently.

These efforts not only preserve heritage but also open Ekiti to the global tourism economy.

    Good governance

At the heart of the BAO’s administration is an unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement:

    – The introduction of the Ekiti Dashboard/Strategic Pillar Monitoring System (SPMS) marks a new era of data-driven governance and public accountability. The dashboard now has more than 600 different projects that have been embarked upon by this government (spms.ek.gov.ng). Some of these projects have been completed while others are at various stages of completion.

    – Regular Stakeholders’ Engagements and Community Communication Bureau initiatives deepening participatory governance.

    – Fiscal transparency is at an all-time high: Ekiti was ranked 97% compliant in BudgIT’s 2024 Fiscal Transparency Report.

    – Six key laws were enacted, including the Ekiti Wealth Fund, Rural Roads Authority, Fire Service Law, and local government reforms.

    – Payment of all leave bonuses owed workers from past administrations.

    – Massive payment of gratuity and pension. Since assuming office, the Governor of Ekiti has paid N7.4 billion gratuity; paid about N24.1 billion pension; paid over N710 million on the employer’s Contributory Pension Scheme and N4.4 billion as gratuity to Local Government retirees. These figures show a massive commitment to the welfare of the people. It is unprecedented in the history of Ekiti State attesting to the gracious and generous heart of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO).

    – Workers’ welfare including one of the first States in the federation to implement the minimum wage packages. Ekiti’s disaggregation of the wages of public servants, including pensioners, has been adjudged to be one of the best among the sub nationals in the country.

In conclusion, one can surmise that such systemic reforms ensure that quality service delivery is not episodic but institutionalized in Ekiti. In essence, Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s (BAO) leadership has proven that good governance is achievable when rooted in people-first policies, vision, and strategic execution. Through these six strategic pillars, the State has not only witnessed infrastructural and economic transformation but has also laid the foundation for enduring development in the trajectory towards the “shared prosperity” mantra. All said and done, Ekiti is not on autopilot—it is being purposefully steered toward greatness.

  • How Tinubu’s creation of forest guard provides over 50,000 jobs for youths – Senator Fadeyi

How Tinubu’s creation of forest guard provides over 50,000 jobs for youths – Senator Fadeyi

Senator Olubiyi  Fadeyi, who represents Osun Central District at the Senate, is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment. He is also the Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Communications, Trade & Investment.  In this interview with Toba Adedeji, he speaks about President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in creating jobs for youths and other issues. Excerpts

What efforts do you think President Bola Tinubu’s approval and establishment of the National Forest Guards will have on the National Park Service?

Let me first congratulate and commend His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), for this bold and historic step in establishing the National Forest Guards. It is a landmark decision that will change the way we manage and secure our forests. The creation of the National Forest Guards under the National Park Service, which falls directly under the purview of my committee, demonstrates the President’s visionary leadership and his commitment to both security and environmental sustainability.

I must also emphasise that the National Forest Guards should remain under the supervision of the Senate Committee on Environment. Globally, forest security is not treated as a purely policing matter, but as part of environmental and conservation management. If you place them under the police, they risk being constrained by bureaucracy and may even be lost in the wider debate about state policing reforms. But as a standalone institution, they can be more innovative, flexible, and technology-driven in their operations. This is a global best practice, and Nigeria must follow suit.

What are the major benefits of this new initiative under the Renewed Hope Agenda?

The benefits are enormous. First, the National Forest Guards will strengthen the protection of our forests, which are vital for biodiversity, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods. For years, our forests have been threatened by illegal loggers, poachers, and criminal elements using them as hideouts. Now, we have a dedicated and professional structure to secure them.

Secondly, the employment benefit cannot be overstated. This initiative will directly create well over 50,000 jobs for indigenous local people across the country. These men and women, who know their terrain better than anyone else, will now be empowered and gainfully employed to safeguard their environment. That is true grassroots empowerment.

Thirdly, as a standalone structure with modern training and flexibility, the Forest Guards will be able to explore technology-driven solutions such as drone surveillance, GPS tracking, and early-warning systems to detect illegal activities. This would not be possible if they were submerged under another security structure with a different mandate.

Lastly, it complements our national security strategy. Forests have long served as hideouts for insurgents and bandits. By securing these areas, we are not only protecting the environment but also closing one of the major gaps in our fight against insecurity.

How do you assess the efforts of the President and our security services in recent times?

I must commend Mr. President and our gallant security agencies. The successes recorded in the past months are very encouraging. Under President Tinubu’s leadership, we have witnessed the capture of the Ansaru terrorist leader and the elimination of several notorious bandit leaders in the North-West. Today, Kaduna State, which was once a flashpoint of violence and insecurity, is experiencing a level of peace and calm not seen in recent years.

These results show that the government’s approach is working. By adding the National Forest Guards to our security architecture, we are reinforcing this progress and addressing one of the root enablers of insecurity: ungoverned forest spaces.

Beyond the Forest Guards, what innovative steps is your Committee taking to address environmental concerns for Nigerians, both in rural and urban communities?

This is a very important question. Our Committee is focused on improving the daily environmental realities of Nigerians wherever they live. For our rural communities, we are promoting sustainable agricultural practices, clean water access, and forest conservation programs that directly improve livelihoods. For our urban centres, we are working on policies that tackle waste management, flooding, and clean air initiatives.

We are also exploring innovative financing and public-private partnerships that will allow us to scale renewable energy projects, support climate-smart housing, and integrate green technology into city planning. The goal is to ensure that, whether you live in a village or a metropolitan city, you can feel the positive impact of environmental governance.

We know young people are increasingly vocal about climate change and environmental issues. How does your Committee plan to engage them?

Indeed, our youth are the strongest voices in the climate and environmental space, and we must carry them along. As a Committee, we are committed to being innovative in how we engage them. One of our plans is to introduce technology-enhanced platforms where young Nigerians can make submissions, share ideas, and be part of the policy-making process.

This will be inclusive, transparent, and interactive—allowing youths from every part of the country, not just Abuja, to have a voice. By doing so, we are not only listening but creating a sense of ownership and partnership. The environment belongs to future generations, and we must make them central to our work today.

How will the Senate Committee ensure inclusivity and accountability in the implementation of the National Forest Guards?

We are very mindful of this responsibility. Inclusivity means ensuring that recruitment into the Forest Guards reflects local ownership—indigenous people in each region will be prioritised, because they know their environment best. We will also ensure gender inclusivity, opening opportunities for women to serve in this important initiative.

On accountability, the Committee will strengthen oversight mechanisms. We will work closely with the National Park Service, civil society, and community leaders to ensure the Guards are effective, transparent, and free from abuse. We will also push for the integration of technology that allows communities to report issues and monitor outcomes in real-time.

This is how we will build trust and ensure the Guards deliver on their mandate.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment, what message do you have for Nigerians regarding this development?

My message is simple: the establishment of the National Forest Guards is a collective victory for Nigeria. It is about securing our environment, empowering our youth, protecting biodiversity, and supporting our national security.

I want Nigerians to understand that this initiative will only succeed if it remains a standalone body under the supervision of the National Assembly through the Senate Committee on Environment. That is the only way it can be innovative, flexible, and responsive to global best practices in forest management and security.

Above all, I once again commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his foresight and decisive leadership. With the Forest Guards, Nigeria is setting a new standard for environmental security in Africa. We will continue to engage the media to share our vision for a safer, greener, and more sustainable Nigeria.
