Oba of Benin gets special anniversary gifts

For years, Benin’s artifacts – a bronze statue of a cockerel and sculpture of a king, had left the land. The cockerel was donated to a university in the United Kingdom in 1905 after it was looted during the 1897 British invasion of Benin City. The royal palace was burnt down and artifacts disappeared.

During the 5th anniversary celebration of Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, the two artifacts were presented to him.

In addition to the anniversary celebration, the returned artifacts gave the monarch and the people of Benin another reason to celebrate. Apart from the royal household and the palace grounds, major parts of the ancient city came alive.

The artifacts were handed over to the top monarch by the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji-Ishola. Sources in the palace said Ewuare II was excited that such development occurred during his time.

It would be recalled that the anniversary of his coronation ought to have been held on October 20 but was postponed due to the burial arrangement of Captain Hosa Wells Okunbo. It was a sign of respect for the billionaire who was buried in Benin on October 9 after losing the battle to pancreatic cancer on August 8, 2021.
