A former chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Chief Obasi Lawson has reportedly been kidnapped in Abia State.

This is even as his driver and another occupant of the vehicle were killed.

He was said to have been kidnapped by unknown gunmen around Mkap Jekere, Azumini, Ndoki in Ukwa East Local Government Area of the state as he and other occupants of the vehicle were heading to Arochukwu from their base in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Anambra kidnapped billionaire: Judge angry as lawyers argue bail application

    • Judge adjourns ruling March 27

The hearing of the case involving three persons alleged to have been involved in the kidnapping of Anambra billionaire, Benjamin Ezemma came up Friday in Awka for bail application for one of them.

But the presiding Judge, Justice Ike Ogu, was angry over some delay tactics employed by the counsels.

Three persons were arraigned for alleged involvement in the abduction of the estate guru on November 12, 2024

The suspects are Ozo Jeff Nweke, a well-known personality in Awka, Tochukwu Nwokoye, who is being held at the correctional centre and Chukwuemeka David, in suit number Awka/6c/2025

The angry judge, Justice Ike Ogu said,” Other courts are not sitting but I came here today because of the weight of the matter.”

It was gathered that the reason the courts did not sit, was the burial of one of the lawyers in the state Friday, whose father was a retired Judge.

Justice Ogu, told the learned counsels to make things easy for him in their arguments while telling the prosecutor, PN Ofoma, a Deputy Director in the state Ministry of Justice to rely on the depositions before the court only.

However, the prosecutor pleaded that it was an oversight. It was during her submission that the application by the first defendant, (Nweke) should be discountenanced.

The first defendant, (Nweke),  was represented by Alex Ejesieme, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

Ejesieme, further notified the court that the independent medical report, as requested by the prosecutor, was carried out at Memphis Hospital, adding that the result was equally out.

He described the documents presented by the prosecution, (Ofoma) as “documentary hearsay”

He maintained that even CCTV evidence being quoted by the prosecution was not before the court.

But the prosecution maintained that ‘prima facie’ case of planning and kidnapping have been established against the defendants.

Ezemma, known as the BigBen, the billionaire co-founder of Dubai Estate in Anambra State has been missing since November 12, 2024 and has not been seen till now.

After listening to the counsels on the bail application for the 3rd defendant (Tochukwu Nwokoye), the presiding Judge, Justice Ike Ogu, adjourned the matter to March 27, 2025, for ruling and further hearing

The suspects were charged with two counts of planning and kidnapping of the victim, which the suspects pleaded not guilty the first time the case came up.

The first defendant, Ozo Jeff Nweke, came to court Friday in a wheelchair, while the 3rd defendant, Tochukwu Nwokoye, came from the correctional centre in handcuffs.

  • Kemi Nandap: Steadily redefining what is possible for women in public service

Kemi Nandap: Steadily redefining what is possible for women in public service

    By Tayo Williams

In a universe that has not always made space for women, Mrs. Kemi Nana Nandap, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, has boldly taken up a prominent space for herself by excelling in an era and sector where everyone seems to understate the role and worth of a driven woman.

Nandap’s story evokes brilliant manifestations of zeal and determination because, in the course of her professional trajectory, she had been thrown into the deep end of the ocean and told to swim and, through sheer will, she safely got to shore. She had also been put in the night sky and told to shine and the halo she emitted literally illuminated the universe.

Without a doubt, Nandap is one of those rare people who see a vision and immediately understand its power by summoning all their energy, courage, conviction, and drive to make a difference, break glass ceilings, and show that greatness can come from an unlikely place. And she is doing so, and much more, with guts and gusto while redefining what is possible for women in public service.

Yet, she has been at the helm of the NIS for only a year. Interestingly, her appointment was not a cosmic roll of the dice. It was borne out of a firm and proven conviction that Nandap, born on June 3, 1966, in Zaria, Kaduna State, possesses the ingenuity, mojo, experience, and expertise to achieve President Bola Tinubu’s agenda for the immigration ecosystem.

Nigeria has a porous border problem, which threatens her territorial integrity in no small measure. Over the past decade, unbridled movements from neighbouring countries like Niger, Chad, and Cameroun among others have significantly contributed to the rise in terrorism, banditry, smuggling, and organised crime especially in the North. The president is an unabashed advocate of free movement in Africa for the advancement of trade and integration, but not when it comes at the expense of national security.

Thus, there was an urgent need for innovation and reform in immigration management, which left no room for the president to dither or pander to bureaucratic or political sentiments. He reckoned that the prospective candidate must be one that could help to deepen the ongoing reforms in the service, create a robust mechanism for efficient and dedicated service delivery to Nigerians, and strengthen Nigeria’s security through proactive and effective border security and migration management.

Being a renowned and accustomed talent spotter, President Tinubu zeroed in on Nandap to succeed Caroline Wura-Ola Adepoju, who had reached the statutory retirement age. Until February 2024 when the president announced her appointment, Nandap was the Deputy Comptroller-General overseeing the Migration Directorate and had spent over three decades in the NIS serving in various strategic commands.

It was a pressure cooker job crucial to Nigeria’s safety and would task the most intrepid individual, but Nandap is no wimp or shrinking violet. In less than one year in office, the Biochemistry graduate of the University of Ilorin is lending credence to what the world already knows about President Tinubu as a man who spots goldmines where many see landmines while steadily rejuvenating and repositioning the service.

Upon her appointment, the new CG affirmed her resolve to strengthen policies aimed at preventing irregular migration and safeguarding the lives of citizens while highlighting the importance of fostering positive bilateral relations and tightening border security to enhance national security.

“Our focus will be on fostering unity, driving growth, and advancing development. We are steadfast in our resolve to strengthen policies to prevent irregular migration, safeguard the lives of our citizens, and foster positive bilateral relations. We will tighten our border and security will be a key objective to reduce the porosity of our borders and enhance the overall national security of our nation because a safe border is a safe nation,” CG Nandap stated.

A few months into her stewardship, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the supervising minister of the NIS, said significant progress had been made in border security, specifically mentioning the completion of the first phase of the e-border solution, which covers 40 percent of Nigeria’s borders. He added that new vehicles and e-gates were also deployed to ensure effective border control critical to maintaining a secure nation.

Nandap’s administration has introduced e-response channels for faster, seamless, and real-time engagements with Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora while strengthening international partnerships, adopting cutting-edge technologies, and enhancing operational capacity in border security and migration management.

Under her stewardship, 137 human trafficking victims were rescued while 42 migrant smuggling operations were disrupted. Recently, a series of coordinated operations across three states resulted in the arrest of 155 foreigners for cybercrimes and unauthorised entry into the country. They have since been deported to their various countries in alignment with the government’s efforts to improve border security and protect citizens from illegal activities. Nandap’s catalogue of achievements includes the clearing of over 200, 000 passports backlog and the successful conclusion of the Modernising the Nigeria Immigration Service Workforce (MoNIS) project, which is supported by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and the Government of Denmark.

She said introducing these policies underscores the NIS’s commitment to strengthening its workforce, ensuring equitable career advancement, and fostering an inclusive environment for all officers. By addressing critical issues such as professional development and gender equality, the NIS, she added, aims to enhance operational efficiency, promote diversity, and better serve the nation.

Within the year under review, Nandap’s leadership acumen was acknowledged on the continent with her emergence as the Chairperson of the ECOWAS Heads of Immigration. Though it is still early in the day to start counting the gains of Nandap’s reforms and leadership, there is a consensus that Nigeria now has a more efficient and competent electronic border security architecture to secure the country effectively.

Okpebholo’s Special Adviser on Security, Mr. Paul Akhere, yesterday led security personnel on the demolition at Illeh, Esan West Local Government and Uromi, Esan Northeast Council.

He said the demolition was in accordance with the law.

Akhere, stressing the state government’s commitment to securing the lives and property of residents, said the Okpebholo administration would not tolerate any house or establishment used as a hideout for criminal activities.

He called on landlords to ensure proper profiling of their tenants, before subletting their property.

He said: “This house has been used for criminal activities. They keep kidnapped victims here, and a raid by men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) recovered some dangerous weapons as well.

“According to the new law on kidnapping, passed by the House of Assembly and signed by Governor  Okpebholo, any house found being used for kidnapping will be demolished. This will act as a deterrent to others.

“You must profile a person, before giving out your house to him or her for rent. Go to the police station and let them help you in profiling the new person, before you give out your property. You must verify their identity and where they work.’’

Akhere assured residents that the demolition would be a continuous one, ‘’as the current government is determined to rid Edo of criminals and make the state habitable for all.’’

The Commander, Special Task Force, Michael Anetor, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the exercise, which was in accordance with the law, would act as a deterrent to others and help checkmate kidnapping and other criminal activities.

He urged residents to assist in the fight against kidnapping by keeping watch over their vicinities and reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or to members of the Special Task Force.

Edo govt threatens to sack non-performing contractors

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has threatened to sack non-performing contractors handling projects across the state.

He asked them to work according to specifications and agreed timelines or risk termination of their contracts.

Okpebholo, who spoke yesterday when he inspected some roads and drainage projects, expressed displeasure about the execution rates.

He frowned at the slow pace of work on Orior-Ozolua Community Road, with residents complaining that the contractor was not always on site.

The governor and his entourage inspected road and drainage projects at Orior-Ozolua, Orior Uteh Palace Road, New Uteh Road, Ekiuwa Quarters and Upper Ekenhuan open drain by Nigeria Army Cantonment, among others.

The crowd that received Okpebholo and his entourage at the sites,  thanked him for remembering them, saying the last administration of Godwin Obaseki forgot about their existence. They prayed for the success of the Governor Okpebholo administration.

At Orior-Ozolua in Uhunmwonde Local Government, Mr. Sylvester Igbinovia complained about the slow pace of work by the contractor handling the road and drainage projects.

He said: “Mr. Governor, this contractor is just too slow on this job. They close before 2pm when they are on site, but most times, they are not on site.

“They are here today, Your Excellency, I am sure they know that you are coming, this is why they are here today.”

Okpebholo, who inspected the thickness of the drainage at Orior-Ozolua, said he was displeased that the contractor did not meet project specifications, and instructed him to do the right thing or have his contract revoked.

He said: “Why did you reduce the width of the drain? You reduced it on both sides. Look at my face, if you are not doing the right thing and not working according to specifications, I can revoke the contract any moment without fear or favour.”

The governor said he wanted the contractors working for the state government to do quality jobs, noting that the funds for the capital-intensive and people-oriented projects belonged to Edo people and must be utilised effectively and efficiently, to move the state forward.

  • Ex-Gov Buni heads APC committee on ‘marginalised’ five National Deputies

Ex-Gov Buni heads APC committee on ‘marginalised’ five National Deputies

All Progressives Congress (APC) has set up a committee to work out modality on how to bring in new members into the National Working Committee (NWC) and the National Executive Committee (NEC).

The decision followed a presentation by Lady Omorede Osifo, Edo born Deputy National Treasurer, in which she drew attention to the plight of what she described as five marginalised national deputies, during the NEC meeting in Abuja last week.

The committee is headed by the erstwhile Yobe Governor, Mala Buni is to resolve the protracted grievance.

Among those in attendance were Vice President Kashim Shettima; Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who was accompanied by all members of the National Working Committee (NWC), including the Deputy National Chairmen (North and South), National Secretary, Legal Adviser, Treasurer, Organising Secretary, Women Leader, Youth Leader and leader of Persons Living with disabilities amongst others.

Also present were APC Governors, led by Hope Uzodimma (Imo), who serves as Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum.

Multiple sources at the meeting disclosed that Lady Osifo, who is the APC Deputy National Treasurer, alleged marginalisation of some deputies at the meeting presided over by President Tinubu.

She moved a motion asking President Tinubu and the leadership of the party to consider including all national deputies in the NWC as against the norm in which five Deputies are members of the NWC while five are not.

Tinubu reportedly hailed her for bringing the issue to the  front burner and immediately mandated that the issue be looked into promptly.

According to one of the sources: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who has demonstrated numerous times that he is a leader who believes in fairness immediately swung into action by discussing with the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Ganduje and other leaders on the way forward.

“Thereafter, a committee was put together headed by the former governor of Yobe State, Mala Buni to look into the criteria for bringing new members into the National Working Committee as well as National Executive Committee of the ruling party the All Progressives Congress.”

The sources added that the party leaders present at the meeting were grateful to Mr President for taking prompt action and were full of admiration for the “Edo State amazon” for the wonderful presentation she made.”

The issue of the five “marginalised national deputies” have been lingering for several years.

The aggrieved officials are miffed that they were excluded from the mainstream fold of the National Working Committee (NWC) since the current leadership was constituted and inaugurated three years ago.

The five deputies who have reportedly lodged complaints to the NWC are Bar Ibtahim Salawu Deputy National Legal Adviser; Osifo, Deputy National Treasurer; Jamalu Kabiru, Deputy National Youth Leader; Olufemi Akpedeyi, Deputy National Auditor, and Christopher Akpan, Deputy National Welfare Secretary.

Part of their complaints is that while the national leadership had rebuffed entreaties to include them in the NWC, other five deputies, comprising the Deputy National Secretary, Festus Fuanter, Deputy National Financial Secretary, Hamma-Adama Ali Kumo, Deputy National Organizing Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Duro Meseko and Deputy National Women Leader, Zainab Abubakar Ibrahim, were incorporated.

However, dismissing their claim of injustice as baseless, a member of the NWC said their exclusion was a constitutional issue, explaining that the deputies included in the NWC were products of a motion moved and endorsed during the party’s last elective convention in Abuja.

While advising the aggrieved officials to follow constitutional methods to perfect their inclusion, the national officer said: “This issue has been on the front burner since our inauguration. They have taken their complaints to the then national chairman, Abdullahi Adamu and to several other places, but they have been advised to follow constitutional options to redress their exclusion. If they are so passionate about it, where were they when they moved the motion at the national convention ground to include themselves in the amendment?”

Citing Section 12.4 of the certified true copy of the party’s constitution that specified the composition of the NWC, the member of the national leadership insisted that the numerical strength of leadership currently stood at 25.

He listed them as the National Chairman, two Deputy National Chairmen from North and South, National Secretary, his Deputy, six National Vice, referred to zonal chairmen, National Legal Adviser, National Welfare, National Treasurer, Financial Secretary, National Organising and Deputy, National Publicity Secretary as well as Deputy, National Women Leader and Deputy, National Youth Leader among others.

Notwithstanding the explanations, a source sympathetic to the excluded five has admonished the party chieftains to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and equitable.

He also said that the APC constitution allows for NEC to carry out functions of the National Convention in-between National convention. So the NEC can include the Five Deputies in the NWC pending ratification by the National convention
