Alleged budget padding against Natasha cheap blackmail – Group

A political pressure group, Action Collective (AC), has dismissed allegations of budget padding against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling them unfounded, fictitious and a diversionary tactic.

In a statement by its National Coordinator, Teddy Onyejuwe, the group described the claim as an attempt to misrepresent facts and distract from serious issues that require proper investigation.

The controversy stems from accusations that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan manipulated the budget of the Senate Committee on Local Content, which she previously chaired.

However, Action Collective insisted that these claims are baseless and were deliberately made to divert attention from other pressing matters.

According to Onyejuwe, the senator’s removal as chairperson of the committee was politically motivated, following her role in influencing five LNG projects approved by President Bola Tinubu for Kogi State.

The commissioning of these projects reportedly led to tensions that resulted in her removal.

The group also criticised the procedural errors in her suspension, stating that the due process was not followed.

Onyejuwe further questioned why the Senate failed to comply with a court order, attributing it to desperation

Action Collective called for a focus on real issues rather than political distractions, urging the authorities to uphold justice and fairness in legislative proceedings.

Bill to establish entrepreneurship institute in Abia scales second reading

The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed for second reading a bill seeking to establish a Federal College of Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition in Ntigha, Isiala Ngwa North, Abia State.

The initiative aims to tackle youth unemployment and promote economic self-reliance.

Leading the debate on the bill on Tuesday, its sponsor, Hon. Ginger Obinna Onwusibe, stressed the need to equip Nigerian youths with practical skills to address the nation’s rising unemployment crisis.

He noted that the traditional focus on white-collar jobs had left many graduates struggling to find employment, making vocational and entrepreneurial education a vital alternative.

“Nigeria faces a rising youth unemployment crisis, exacerbated by an overdependence on white-collar jobs.

“To address this, we must begin to prioritize entrepreneurial education and vocational training to equip our youth with practical skills required for self-reliance and job creation,” Onwusibe stated.

According to him, Ntigha’s strategic location, with its proximity to key commercial centers in the Southeast, makes it an ideal site for such an institution.

The proposed college will offer specialized training in critical areas such as agriculture, technology, manufacturing, and digital innovation—aligning with the federal government’s broader economic diversification strategy.

Hon. Onwusibe argued that similar institutions in other countries had played a significant role in economic transformation.

He stressed that Nigeria must adopt the same approach to enhance productivity, reduce poverty, and strengthen local industries.

“This initiative will not only empower young people but also boost local industries, reduce poverty, and enhance national productivity.

“We cannot afford to be left behind in the global drive for entrepreneurship and skills acquisition,” he said.

The bill is titled: A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal College of Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition, Ntigha, Isiala Ngwa North, Abia State, to Provide Full-time Courses, Teaching Instruction and Training in Technology, Applied Science, Arts, Social Sciences, Humanities and Management; and for Related Matters (HB.1165).

Members of the House are expected to further deliberate on the bill’s provisions before a final decision is made.

If passed, the establishment of the college could mark a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s entrepreneurial landscape and reducing the country’s high unemployment rate.

  • Uzodimma to Owerri elders: rise above politics, work for unity

Uzodimma to Owerri elders: rise above politics, work for unity

Imo state governor, Hope Uzodimma, has urged political leaders from Imo East Senatorial district popularly called Owerri Zone to ensure unity, cohesiveness and peace in the state.

The governor said the elders must ensure they attend to state and community matters without playing bad politics of divide and rule.

Uzodimma stated this on Monday during a meeting with Owerri Zone leaders under the aegis of Owerri Harmony Project at the Government House in Owerri.

The governor also cautioned against actions that could destabilise the political environment.

He urged the leaders to embrace unity in preparation for future political transitions.

“I welcome you to the Imo Government House, your house. Feel at home. Democracy is about the people, and you represent the people. I deeply appreciate your vote of implicit confidence in my leadership. This is a big trust, and I will work hard to justify it,” Uzodimma stated.

Reflecting on the political history of Imo state, the governor recalled his involvement in significant political movements, including the emergence of former governor Achike Udenwa in 1999, noted that there was improvement in the state’s political stability, allowing for constructive conversations about its leadership future.

“There was a time when we lost our state, but we have recovered and restored its honor.

Peace is essential for progress. Without it, society struggles to survive, and rules lose their meaning.

Thankfully, we now have an environment where we can practice good politics,” he said.

The governor, who highlighted the purpose of the Elders’ Council, said the body, among others, was established to address both internal and external challenges affecting Imo politics.

“I took a bill to the House of Assembly to establish the Elders’ Council, aimed at uniting the state and ensuring that Igbo people solve their problems internally.

The council is expected to rise above politics and always speak the truth, no matter how bitter,” Uzodimma noted.

On the contentious issue of power rotation, the governor said the charter of equity will not be jettisoned but emphasises that merit will be what to look out for.

He said, “I will not solve all the problems in Imo. I will do the ones I am able to do but the man coming after me should be able to do some.

“So we must use taxpayers’ money for our people. We will support merit. We must look for merit because we need a man who is courageous.

“You saw the insecurity that greeted my emergence, you see by the grace of God we were able to survive it, so what we need is a well-focused, bold, courageous man”.

The governor warned that political ambition should not breed enmity.

He cautioned leaders to be wary of external influences that might seek to sow discord.

He further stressed the importance of partisan democracy, noting that his successor would naturally emerge from his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“When I took office, I had a debt portfolio of ₦298 billion, which we reduced to ₦110 billion by 2021.

“Our internally generated revenue has grown from ₦400 million to nearly ₦5 b monthly. These are results of focused governance,” he said.

Governor Uzodimma urged the leaders to promote unity, tolerance, and reconciliation, emphasising that political ambition should not overshadow the collective good.

“I am not discussing politics now because I still have three years in office. Let us first create awareness, consult, reconcile, and unite. Politics should be pursued with love and understanding, not confrontation,” he said.

The governor also advised against excessive materialism, emphasising the importance of leaving a lasting legacy of service.

“In the end, it is not about how many properties we own but the impact we leave behind. Let us focus on what truly matters,” he added.

In response, the leaders, who pledged support to Uzodimma’s government, passed a vote of confidence on him.

He highlighted the governor’s commitment to community policing, collaboration with federal security agencies, and the deployment of advanced surveillance technology to combat crime.

Following deliberations, the motion received broad support from members of the House.

Lawmakers acknowledged the importance of state-led security reforms in addressing Nigeria’s broader security challenges.

This development marks a significant step in legislative advocacy for enhanced security governance and reinforces the collective effort to ensure a safer Nigeria.

Oborevwori threatens to revoke non-performing contracts

Delta Governor, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori, has threatened to revoke construction projects of contractors handling multiple projects but lack capacity.

He, however, said his administration would spare contractors that are able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

According to him, the state government prepares payment schedules on a weekly basis to pay contractors as they turn-in their certificates.

Oborevwori, who disclosed this during inspection of Orere bridge in Ughelli South LGA, said his administration would no longer allow contractors to take projects they could not finish on time.

He said the Orere bridge which was started by the previous administration, connects over fifteen riverine communities along the corridor.

“This bridge is very key to several communities within this area, without this bridge, accessing those communities is very difficult. So when this bridge is completed, it will be of very great benefit to about 15 communities around this area.

“Like I promised before, we are also going to engage indigenous contractors and that is what we are doing.

“Even though we are using some international companies, we also need to engage our local contractors and I think the quality of work is okay.

“We need to encourage our local contractors, but I am not happy with the speed of work, the momentum is not okay, the contractor needs to step up activity”, he said.

Continuing, Governor Oborevwori, said; “there is not enough speed on this job, if we continue like this, how long will I be here for inspection? I believe that when I come again it should be for final inspection before commissioning.

“So the contractor has till the end of this year to see what they will be able to do, even if we have to reduce their contract work in other places so they can concentrate.

“This is imperative because we can’t just have contractors with so many contracts and moving from one site to another sampling equipment when we are going for inspection.

“We will encourage contractors to take what they can do, when you finish your job on time, we will give you another job so that’s what we will be doing now.

“Those who are having too many jobs, we are going to revoke some of them that are not performing but if you are performing no problem, but if you are not performing we will revoke your contract and give it to those who can perform.”

On the economic viability of the bridge, Governor Oborevwori said, “if there is no economic value there is no way we can put this kind of bridge here but moreover they are also Deltans and like we have promised that we will be fair and just to the people of Delta State.

“From here you can access so many of these villages and bring their products to the town instead of using boats they will just drive through and even people can come from outside to the communities to buy produce.

“We have over five kilometers of road across because completing this bridge without the road will not make much sense to inhabitants of these communities.”

  • Bayelsa Govt wades into Ohanaeze Ndigbo election stalemate

Bayelsa Govt wades into Ohanaeze Ndigbo election stalemate

    • Suspends rerun election indefinitely

The Bayelsa State Government has announced the indefinite suspension of the rerun election scheduled for Saturday this week to produce a substantive President of the state chapter of Ohaneze Ndigbo.

It also announced the total disbandment of the Electoral Committee that conducted the election on the 23rd of February 2025 that ended in a stalemate, saying the committee fell short of expectations in the performance of its duties.

Speaking yesterday at a meeting with leaders and stakeholders of Ohaneze Ndigbo in the state at Government House, Yenagoa, the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, warned those planning to participate in the rerun election to have a change of mind in their own interest.

The Deputy Governor, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Doubara Atasi, at the weekend, explained that the state government decided to intervene to promote peace and harmony among the Igbos in Bayelsa as well as forestall the breakdown of law and order.

According to Ewhrudjakpo, the government has already given directive to security agencies to arrest and prosecute whoever that violates its directives bordering on the election of the state president of Ohaneze.

He acknowledged the supportive role being played by Igbos in the development of Bayelsa and urged them to continue to live as brothers and sisters and never allow the issue of electing a new leadership to divide them.

Ewhrudjakpo said: “As a government, we appreciate what you have been doing for our state. You are outstanding and that is why we respect you. This is the first time we are meeting again after our second term election. So, let me on behalf of the governor and myself, thank you for supporting us.

“We are not taking your support for granted. That is why for the first time in the history of this state, one of you, an Igbo son, is appointed as commissioner who sits with the governor at the state executive council to make decisions.

“Coming back to the issue that has brought us here, what do the Ohanaeze Ndigbo want? Would you allow the election of your leader to polarize and destroy Ohaneze Ndigbo in Bayelsa? Our answer is No, so for now, the government’s position is that that rerun is suspended indefinitely.

“On Saturday, the security agencies will be deployed round; so, anybody who gathers in the name of doing Ohanaeze election in this state will be a guest to the Police or DSS.

“Government will not impose any candidate on Ohanaeze, but the government will ensure that there is peace and tranquility. We want to see how we can reconcile you people. On that note, we are setting up a reconciliation committee now.”

Ewhrudjakpo, who assured the Igbos that government, would do everything within its reach including adopting the “Doctrine of Necessity” to address the lacunas in their constitution to achieve amicable resolution of the current logjam.

To this end, he constituted a reconciliation committee to look into the issues causing the dispute and come up with recommendations within the next two weeks to enable the government to settle the misunderstanding.

Earlier in their submissions, the two candidates contesting the position of Presidency of Ohaneze Ndigbo in the state, which is zoned to Anambra State, Dr. Frank Odinekwe, and Dr. Anthony Olikagwu, appealed to the state government to help the sociopolitical organization resolve its internal conflict.

Responding on behalf of the Reconciliation Committee, the Chairman and Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, High Chief Collins Cocodia, expressed gratitude to the Deputy Governor for finding them worthy for the assignment and pledged to work hard to achieve the committee’s purpose.
