Nine political parties under the aegis of the Alliance of Registered Political Parties (ARPP) have endorsed the candidature of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for a second term.

The parties are the All People’s Party (APP), the Action Democratic Party (ADP), the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), the National Rescue Movement (NRM), the Young Progressives Party (YPP), the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP), the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Peoples’ Redemption Party (PRP).

The parties said they arrived at the decision after a careful examination of the good works of the Sanwo-Olu-led administration because they desire continuity and realisation of the greater Lagos dream of the administration. The statement reads: “We reached this decision sequence to our thorough analysis of all the good works and rapid development in Lagos.

“We cannot sacrifice the various landmark achievements of the present administration scattered all over the state on the altar of bitter politicking. The governor’s consistency as a progressive democrat is worthy of due commendation and continuity is key.

“We observed at a close range his energetic campaign through the nooks, corners and crannies of the state. He has delivered on his social contract with the good people of Lagos through the famed THEMES mantra.

“It’s worthy of note that he literarily saved the country from the scourge of Covid 19 through proactive measures that underscored his responsive and responsible attributes. Among others, massive road construction, investments in education, healthcare services, the environment, youth empowerment, tourism, public transportation, housing, science and technology need to be consolidated during his second term.

“It makes a whole lot of sense for Lagos State to be in tune with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidency at a time like this to achieve our age-long desires and lofty aspirations. His message of  Greater Lagos Rising reverberated with all and sundry and we can safely conclude that we have in Sanwo-Olu  a  governor who is resolutely committed to taking our state to greater heights in the years ahead.”

There has been intense horse-trading between the PDP and the APC in recent times in the state, as the two major political parties engage themselves in a superiority battle, especially as the next phase of the 2023 general election draws closer.

Among the different pro-PDP groups which mobilized their respective members to the Oke-Ado Secretariat of Oyo APC for the defection and official declaration of support for the party’s candidate, Senator Teslim Folarin are the Omititun Youth Vanguard led by Comrade Sanyaolu Adeyemo, the GSM Marines coordinated by Comrade Yemi Oyebamiji, the All Youth Grand Alliance under the leadership of Isamotu Twins, the IBK Vanguard of Mr Ibukun Olu-Afolabi and another group led by Comrade Afolami Afolabi.

Okowa, who spoke during an interactive session with reporters at the newly inaugurated Press Centre Government House in Asaba, said he was not worried at Ibori’s open romance with the opposition APC.

He claimed that many persons in the opposition party were rooting for the PDP governorship candidate, Sheriff Oborevwori.

“If Ibori is supporting somebody else, it is his choice, I cannot criticise him or approve of it. Just as many people in the APC are also supporting our candidate, so many of them, it is a matter of choice. Even those who have decamped and several others who have not decamped are supporting us. That is the beauty of democracy; it is a matter of choice.

He said his support for Oborevwori was total because he emerged through a credible democratic process.

ABIA: PDP disowns member as Mbaka urges caution

The leadership of the Abia State chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has distanced itself from the video of a PDP member calling for violence in the Governorship and  House of Assembly elections scheduled for Saturday.

The Nation reports that the video of a man wearing a customised T-shirt of the PDP governorship candidate in the state, speaking at the popular Osisioma junction off Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway threatening violence in March 18 elections in the state has been generating controversy since it appeared on the social media.

But the PDP, in a statement yesterday through its acting Publicity Secretary and Vice Chairman, Abia North, Abraham Amah, said that the party condemns the act of the said member.

“The Abia PDP condemns the inciting video in its totality and hereby distances herself from such unruly behaviour. We state in very clear terms that the individuals involved were acting on their own accord and not on the authority of the party or our governorship candidate, Sir Okey Ahiwe.

“The peaceful character of PDP under the leadership of our Abia State governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu and the State Chairman of the Party, Rt. Hon. Dr. Alwell Asiforo Okere is known to all and they will not for any reason resort to such acts of desperation just to win an election.

“Similarly, our governorship candidate, Sir Okey Ahiwe, a Knight of the Church, is a man of peace who will not for any reason torpedo the peace that has existed in this State after having signed a Peace Accord just last week.

In an unrelated development, the Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry Enugu, Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka urged the electorates to ensure they vote for a governorship candidate that deserves to be the governor of Abia.

Katsina renews move to end farmer-herder clashes, banditry

    • How governor secured N6.25b from FG to provide facilities for herdsmen

Governor Aminu Bello Masari recently visited the 10 LGAs ravaged by banditry attacks and farmers/herders clashes in fulfillment of his earlier promise during dialogue with the bandits in their stronghold in 2019, Augustine Okezie reports.

IN September 2019, Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State, accompanied by some of his top government appointees and security agents, met with the leadership of the terrorists groups that were terrorising the state. Masari had insisted then that the renewal of dialogue and peace initiative with bandits and Fulani leaders would be vigorously pursued with sincerity of purpose.

Also speaking with bandits and Fulani leaders at Unguwar Tsamiya village in Faskari Local Government Area the same year, the governor said his administration was driving the peace initiatives because it was convinced that dialogue was the best possible way to restore peace across the communities in the state.

He said: ”Government is mindful of using extreme military might to address the situation. But it will be better to key into the initiatives for the overall benefit of all. I want you all to know that we will all account for our deeds. Government is doing this wholeheartedly for the generality of the populace.”

In their separate remarks at the meetings, the various bandits and Fulani leaders who spoke at the event renounced banditry, pledging to key into the initiatives if the government fulfilled its own side of the bargain and released some of their men in detention and also establish Ruga settlement for them.

Among the key bandits and forest commanders that attended the meeting were Alhaji Masume, Marwana, Leko, Alhaji Ado ”Maikzo” Alero and Alhaji Lawani.

Two years later, Governor Masari returned on a second visit to the bandits’ enclaves when his Special Adviser on Livestock Services, Dr. Bagiwa, led the state House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture and a group of journalists on a tour of infrastructural projects being constructed by the state government to house the herders, build schools and veterinary clinics as well as abattoirs

The local government areas visited include Jibia, Batsari, Kurfi, Dustinma, Safana, Danmusa, Kankara, Faskari, Dandume and Sabuwa.

Addressing the herders at one of the sites visited, Bagiwa urged the Fulani leaders to set up a community monitoring team to ensure proper use of the facilities and enroll their children in schools to learn Islamic and western education.

He commended the federal government for providing the funds, which was about N6.5 billion, to ensure the provision of facilities. In their separate response, Fulani leaders also commended the state government for initiating the ranch programmes to improve their living standards. They pledged to work with the state government and security agencies to return peace in all the trouble areas within the state.

Responding to enquiries from newsmen at the sites, Dr Bagiwa recalled the meeting the Governor had with the herders and bandits in the forests two years earlier, saying: ”Our government, led by his excellency, visited the areas that are mostly affected by banditry attacks, including Jibia, Batsari, Safana, Danmusa, Kurfi, Dutsin ma, Kankara, Faskari, Sabwar and Dandume.

“He also went straight to the forest where he met the bandits and they told him that they don’t have access to education, water supply, grazing land as well as access to bedding services.

“When we came back from the trip, we sat down and looked around, and we found that we were in need of N12.5 billion which we know that this state does not have the capacity to do.

“So His Excellency in his wisdom contacted Mr. President, saying that he had gone round and the people were asking for infrastructure and that they needed his support.

“President Buhari asked His Excellency to write a request, and lucky enough, the President approved N6.25 billion.”

The Special Adviser disclosed that the first stage of the project was the construction of the needed infrastructure, including primary schools of three classrooms, general hospital and local government centres and the project site which would also be well equipped with modern clinic

He further stated that the new collection centres were ready where the animals could have their feeding. He also said there was solar powered boreholes and houses were the animals could sleep during rainy season or cold weather.

He said: “We constructed 10 houses in these projects. We also have the feeding trough, bole holes where the animals can drink water beside the dam in case they need water.”

The Special Adviser also stated that the major target of government was to promote access to the education of the herdsmen, insisting that if the herders had Islamic education, they would embrace the fear of God and desist from engaging in banditry.

He said: “All these things they are doing shouldn’t have been done because they know it’s wrong. That’s why we targeted the schools and the hostel in the project lands so that after the herdsmen came back from grazing, they could concentrate on their Islamic learning. The small children will also go to the education agencies.”

Bagiwa further said the facilities were 70% completed, adding that the best skills and artisanship were deployed to duplicate the projects all over the areas where they were needed.

The state government also commended the people for appreciating the various infrastructural facilities being provided for herders.

He said: “Alhamdulillah, while we were there, you could see how they gathered, hundreds of them in one area, thanking us left and right. They were even escorting us from the forest to the main street; the main road where they have progress.

“Even when the bandits came to where we motorised some boreholes, solar power and so on, people were happy and they were praying that what we had done would remain sustained, and they were in very happy mood in all the 10 local government areas.”

Bagiwa further noted that the health conditions of the herders had improved because they were now getting enough medical care and even clean water and the animals were becoming healthy with more quality meat, more quantity and healthy skin

Another important support to the grazing reserves and the ranching projects, our correspondent noted, was the remarkable construction of grazing dams, a number of which were almost ready.

When completed, the projects were expected to be handed over to a committee that will protect the projects including the primary school, the hostels and other facilities from being vandalised.

The state government is also expected to promote a Public/Private Partnership (PPP) expected to manage the entire ranching resources.

Abba Abubakar, Director Livestock Services Department, while inspecting the projects which were executed with the support of the Federal Government, described it as commendable.

He disclosed that before commissioning the projects, other aspects of the projects including business plans, veterinary clinic, publishing of posters, land production, provisions of schools and facilities meant to support the exercise and all of those located in 10 local government area where the bandits are operating.

Meanwhile, the Fulani herders, farmers and repentant bandits in Katsina State have commended Governor Aminu Bello Masari for addressing their earlier complaints of lack of infrastructure and poor living standards as being responsible for the persistent farmer/herder clashes as well as banditry activities in the state.

The herdsmen, who spoke to newsmen during an inspection of ranching facilities which include schools projects, Mosques, veterinary centres, abattoirs and health centres in Sauri village in Kurfi Local Government Area, said the projects were unprecedented as no government had ever visited the people or installed infrastructures and projects that would improve their living standards

Manir Shehu, who represented the Local Government Chairman of Kurfi Local Government Area, thanked the state government on behalf of the beneficiaries, appealing to them to ensure proper surveillance and protection of the infrastructures.

He said: “Try and inform your brothers, particularly those of them still in the bush, about the latest developments and the provision of infrastructure by the state government.”

Meanwhile, the Katsina State Government has announced plans to commission the ranching projects located in 10 security prone local government areas of the state next month.

This was disclosed to journalists during an inspection tour of ongoing infrastctural projects in Jibia, Batsari, Kurfi, Dutsinma and other areas by the Special Adviser livestock to Governor Aminu Bello Masari, Dr. Laval Bagiwa

He said: “Most of the projects have reached 80 per cent completion and by March, the state government will officially commission them and put them to use to solve the lingering farmers/herders clashes in the state.

“We are here to inspect some of the ranching projects. We have been constructing them for over two years.

“Recall we have federal government support of N6.25b for the scheme in 10 LGAs.”

    PLATEAU:

You can’t win, APC tells PDP

head of March 18 governorship election, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has warned  the main opposition party, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to stop basking in the euphoria that it can win the election.

It has urged the PDP to get ready to accept defeat.  This was contained in a statement by the APC Publicity Secretary, Sylvanus Namang, who indicated that it will not be in the best interest of the Northcentral state to be in the opposition camp, while the progressives control the Federal Government with the emergence of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu as president-elect.

Namang condemned recent statements attributed to the PDP, where the party was expressing optimism that it would emerge victorious in the coming governorship election. He described the former ruling party as “desperate and shameless”.

He said: “The APC Plateau State Chapter has just come across a press release by the desperate and shameless PDP in the state where it is putting high hopes on winning the March 11, 2023 governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

“Without mincing words, this is a delusional hope as the PDP is only raising false hopes to its hapless and rudderless followers.”

     Students root for AbdulRazaq

    • PDP accuses governor of inducing voters with money

The National Association of Kwara State Students (NAKSS) and the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) have endorsed the re-election of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The two student associations declared their positions during a colloquium organised yesterday in appreciation and recognition of the performance of the governor in the education sector.

During the event, which took place in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, the state government donated two Sienna buses to NAKSS and the state chapter of NANS.

NAKSS President, Mr Hassan Hawal who spoke on behalf of the students, said the education sector has experienced significant improvement since the advent of AbdulRazaq’s administration.

He described the intervention as a paradigm shift in the literacy level of the state, adding that students in the state public schools now compete favourably with their counterparts anywhere in the world.

Hawal recalled that many state-owned tertiary institutions were shut down due to unpaid salaries of lecturers and non-accreditation of courses before the present administration.

Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr Afeez Alabi assured the students that the governor places a high premium on education as a way of developing the state into a model that would be second to none.

Also yesterday, the  state chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the administration of Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq of moving huge sum of money from the state coffers into private bank accounts for subsequent disbursement to induce voters during next weekend’s rescheduled governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters  in Ilorin,  the Director-General of the PDP Campaign Council, Prof Ali Ahmad said the party’s legal team has been directed to notify the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of the development.

He said: “We have correct   information about how political office holders, private individuals outside government, influential people in our society, and even bureaucrats receive massive money from government accounts and these individuals then either retain the funds as their own to buy their support while some others are charged with paying a huge part of the money in tranches of N20,000, N30, 000 and N10,000 to ordinary voters.

“This is a big political scam that is going on in our state. Thank God that the new financial regime being promoted by the APC government has also ensured there is an acute scarcity of cash and so the people involved in this scam are being forced to transact this fraudulent business using the banks. This means the transactions can be traced.”

The OYC president urged the electorate to look beyond the party and vote for a man who could transform Enugu State. He said Mbah has outlined clearly how he would manage the affairs of the state.

He said: “He has captured every sector and all segments of the society, including the youth. His competence is also top-notch as we have seen in his successful business career.

“This is why we are begging the people of Enugu State not to miss this golden opportunity of electing a man who is prepared for the job.”

Nnabuike said the choice of candidates should not be decided through party leanings, but on the capacity of the various individuals in the contest.

     ‘Tinubu behind Abiodun’s re-election’

The senator-elect for Ogun West Senatorial District, Senator Solomon Adeola has indicated that the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully in support of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s re-election.

Adeola’s declaration is contained in a statement by his media aide, Mr Kayode Odunaro.

In the statement, Adeola debunked a report on social media platforms that Tinubu was against the re-election of the Ogun governor.

He said the president-elect is fully behind Abiodun and all the other candidates of the APC in Ogun in the forthcoming governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Odunaro said the senator spoke at a stakeholder’s engagement organized to campaign for Governor Abiodun in Ota. He said: “The APC’s victory in Ogun during the last election is not complete until the re-election of Abiodun as governor and the election of all members of the State House of Assembly.

“A fake news being spread on social media about Tinubu being against Abiodun’s re-election in favour of another party’s candidate from Ogun West is the handwork of desperate politicians. They already foresaw their defeat at the election.

“Let me assure you that our party, the APC and the president-elect, are fully committed to ensuring that the party’s governorship and assembly candidates are returned elected without exception.”

SDP candidate steps down for Adebutu

He said all the party’s state House of Assembly candidates are still in the race for the March 18 election.

Ojeshina explained that the collaboration is designed to power from ‘the cabal at Oke Mosan’. He said: “The political alignment was informed by the need to forge a common front to remove our dear state from the list of misgoverned and impoverished states.

“We have been assured of simplified and transparent governance processes, with the sole purpose of improving the quality and standard of living of our people.”

He also emphasised that the alignment was only hinged on the need to work for the victory of the PDP, saying he has not left SDP for the main opposition party.

He pleaded with the Igbo residents to support Cole’s governorship bid for a better Rivers State, urging them to come out en masse with courage and vote for the APC from up to bottom.

He said: “I am begging you; on Saturday please every Igbo man and woman should come out and vote for the APC because your destiny will be determined by this election. We are here to let you know that a lot is being done by this administration to make it happen, with effective collaboration with our PSPs and other stakeholders.”

While appealing to all tenants in Lagos State to return Sanwo-Olu for a second term to ensure continuity in waste management, Odumboni stated: “We also want to let you know that for this administration, we want continuity so that the PSP can begin to prosper, and we can begin to see a lot of changes.

    AKWA IBOM

Court to INEC: List Udofia as APC  candidate

The Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to list Mr. Akanimo Udofia as candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the governorship election in Akwa Ibom.

Justice James Omotosho gave the order yesterday in Abuja following an application by Udofia asking that a consequential order be made to allow the electoral umpire list his name as APC’s governorship candidate .

Justice Omotosho, in his judgment, held that the case of the plaintiff was justiciable, subsequently granted the prayers and ordered INEC to list him as candidate of the APC in Akwa Ibom governorship election.

Udofia and Sen. Ita Enang, a former presidential aide, were in court asking the court to decide the authentic candidate of the APC in the Akwa Ibom governorship race.

The APC had declared Udofia as winner of its governorship primary having won a majority of votes cast at the polls.

Enang, however, approached the Federal High Court challenging the nomination of Udofia.

He based his suit on grounds of alleged irregularities, claiming that Udofia was not qualified to contest the APC’s primary election having participated in the governorship primary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) where he lost.

In its judgment, the trial court agreed with Enang and voided the primary election that produced Udofia and ordered a fresh election to be done within 14 days excluding Udofia’s participation.

Accord sacks leaders for endorsing Makinde

For endorsing the incumbent governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in next week’s Saturday governorship and state houses of assembly elections in Oyo, the Accord Party has relieved all its executive members in the state.

The National Chairman of Accord, Muhammad Nalado,  in a statement in Abuja, said the Oyo State chapter’s decision to back another party’s candidate was anti-party and against the ethos of the Accord Party.

He said his party has a standing and a strong candidate for the governorship election in the person of Adebayo Adelabu.

Nalado added that the NWC also resolved to constitute a five man Caretaker Committee to steer the party to victory and also manage the affairs of the party in the build up to the governorship and State Assembly elections.

He said the five man caretaker Committee members are: Alhaji Isiaka Salami, who will serve as Oyo State Caretaker Chairman, Bashiru Ayobami, who will serve as Caretaker Secretary, Hon. Fatai Salawu, Bimpe Martins, Ayodele Oyajide, who are members of the Caretaker Committee.

    DELTA

     Group threatens sabotage against PDP

Concerned Political Appointees’ Forum (CPAF) in Delta State has threatened to work against the interest of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if the incumbent fails to pay their allowances.

The group that comprises Special Assistants, Senior Special Assistants and Executive Secretaries, said it will be better to lose the election if Okowa wants his political appointees to go home crying after serving the government for four years.

“Governor Okowa should not expect the political appointees to reject juicy offers from the opposition parties when he refused to pay their allowances.”

It said if the PDP must win the state all hands must be on the desk to work for the party which includes paying the political appointees their entitlements before the elections.

“It is said that a hungry man is an angry man and no one should expect an angry man to be at peace with the man who made him angry. It will be better if we rock the boat than allow the Governor to have his way at all times. If Okowa wants his political appointees to go home crying after serving the government for four years, then it’ll be better we sink the boat for everybody to cry.”

PDP raises alarm, alleges plot to rig

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said it has uncovered plots by two major oppositions in the state – the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Labour Party (LP) to rig the upcoming Governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.

The PDP in a statement issued Thursday by its Acting Publicity Secretary and Vice Chairman Abia North, Abraham Amah, alleged that both parties have perpetrated the plot at several held in Owerri, Imo State capital and Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.

The party also alleged that some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were part of the planned electoral fraud.

The PDP Publicity Secretary in the statement said “We have information and concrete evidence that the governorship candidate of the APC held a meeting with officials of INEC at Owerri and perfected plans to rig the election in his favour.

“We use this medium to inform the APC that the charade that saw the emergence of Hope Uzodinma as the governor of Imo State through the backdoor will not be allowed under any circumstance to happen in Abia State.

“A similar meeting was held at the Isiala Ngwa residence of the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, LP with officials of the INEC with a view to rigging the election for him.

“That too, will not happen and has collapsed like a pack of sand.

LP governorship aspirants kick over N25 million interest forms

Some aspirants of the Labour Party in Imo State have kicked against a sum of N 25 million being cost for governorship interest forms.

They said it was abnormal for the fee to be unilaterally increased from N7.5 million to N25 million.

The aspirants expressed their displeasure Thursday at the part’s secretariat in Owerri.

Their outburst followed the dissolution of the state executive and inauguration of a new executive committee.

Former State chairman of the party, Ambrose Onyekwere, who confirmed the dissolution, however said, it was normal as his tenure had expired.

But a source from the party noted that the dissolution may not be unconnected with the scheduled primary of the party which comes up in less than two weeks.

The source also claimed that this was also part of the reason why the governorship interest form was increased from N7.5 million to N25 million.

The source however explained that the party leadership decided to hike the price to place a hurdle on the aspirants that had earlier indicated interest in the governorship position before some new money bag politicians took over the party in the state.

“The governorship interest form was sold for N7.5 million last year but today it’s sold for N25 million. We’re already having a lot of money bags picking the forms. They have realised that the Labour Party is a good brand and everybody wants to be identified with it,” the source  said.

“This clarion call for a peace accord meeting with governorship candidates and their party chairmen, is one of the numerous measures of achieving this desired objective.

“Let’s remember that we are all brothers and sisters with different political ideologies; Adopt the spirit of sportsmanship with the hope of coming together later as there is always life after election.

“We should also allow, support and encourage INEC as umpire to perform their duties without interference.”

Former Kaduna State Governor and National Caretaker Committee Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi has raised the alarm over alleged plans by authorities to arrest and detain 80 members of the party from participating in the forthcoming Governorship and state House of Assembly elections.

Makarfi’s alarm was coming on the heels of the arrest of three top PDP members of the party in the state by security operatives over alleged inciting statements early in the week.

Makarfi further alleged that PDP was in possession of the list of those penciled down for arrest before next Saturday’s elections.

The former governor said those penciled down for arrest were drawn from Kudan, Sanga, Igabi, Lere, Kachia, Jaba and Kaduna North Local Government Areas of the state which are believed to be PDP strongholds.

To this end, Makarfi warned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the state of arbitrary arrest of some PDP members.

Why Igbo in Lagos should vote Sanwo-Olu, by Umahi

Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi has appealed to the Igbo residents in Lagos to vote for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

The governor made the appeal in a statement he signed shortly after receiving his Certificate of Return for the Ebonyi South Senatorial seat in Abuja yesterday.

He said it was imperative for Ndigbo vote wisely given their role in the growth and development of Lagos and the country over the years.

The governor argued that a collective decision to vote massively for the APC would guarantee a more harmonious relationship that would strengthen their businesses and foster peaceful relationships with their host communities.

A faith-based organisation, the All Christians Leaders and Ministers Forum (ACLMF) promised to mobilise support for Governor Sanwo-Olu and all the APC candidates.

The ACLMF made the declaration during its monthly meeting in Lagos yesterday. Its national coordinator, Rev. Dr. Sam Ogedengbe said the organisation has members scattered across the 20 local governments in the state.

He said they would embark on house-to-house and door-to-door campaigns, to convince the electorate to vote for Sanwo-Olu and other APC candidates on Saturday.

Sanwo-Olu’s re-election bid has also been boosted by the latest support he has received from the deputy governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Olori Animashaun Abeni.

After declaring her support for the APC governorship candidate, the SDP deputy governorship candidate said she was opting out of the race and that her supporters should vote for the APC.

Abeni, at a briefing, said she arrived at the decision after a thorough analysis of all the governorship candidates.

She said there was no doubt that Governor Sanwo Olu and Dr. Quadri Hamzat combination stand heads and shoulders above the rest.

Indications have also emerged that a faction of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos may align with the APC to ensure the re-election of Governor Sanwo-Olu.

This was revealed when the APC Professionals’ Council hosted chieftains of the LP who came to seek a possible alliance with the APC ahead of Saturday’s election.

The LP team said they were convinced by Governor Sanwo-Olu’s record of performance and are ready to support his transformational agenda in Lagos by endorsing his re-election bid.

Leader of the team, Comrade Chibuzor Ofoegbu said the last four years of Governor Sanwo-Olu has been productive with massive infrastructural transformation and economic development. He added that they are convinced of his capacity to record more developmental strides if re-elected on March 11.

    Accord chairman, secretary back Makinde

The Accord chieftains said Makinde’s endorsement was borne out of a passion for uninterrupted good governance and conviction that he has performed creditably well to deliver dividends of democracy to the people of Oyo State.

Adelabu was the governorship candidate of the APC during the last general elections in 2019. But, he defected to the Accord after his failures to secure the ticket of the APC during the party’s primary last year.

He said: “The party needs to make all the necessary arrangements for an understanding between the two parties.

“An individual (the governorship candidate) cannot go into a such alliance without understanding from the party executives.”

“Women have been a huge part of our democracy and societal development yet relegated to the background majority of the time. Without gender equity, a sustainable future and equal future for boys and girls remain beyond our reach, therefore.”

In a judgment yesterday, Justice Inyang Ekwo ordered that Onyiloyi be replaced with the plaintiff, Ochechi Godwin Adejor.

The judge held that Onyiloyi, having voluntarily withdrawn as the party’s Deputy Governorship candidate and deposed to an affidavit to that effect, ceased in law, to retain the same status.

The judge said he found, as a fact, that Onyiloyi wrote personally to the LP intimating it of his withdrawal, and that he proceeded to give his withdrawal legal backing by deposing to a court affidavit as evidence of his withdrawal.

The judgment was on the suit marked: to FHC/ABJ/CS/1853/2022 with the LP, INEC and Onyiloyi listed as defendants.

Also, the APC governorship candidate, Rev. Fr Hyacinth Alia, has pledged to uphold women’s rights and tackle their challenges, if elected.

He also pledged to encourage girl-child education, combat gender-based violence and ensure adequate women representation in all appointments both at state and local government levels.

Alia acknowledged the leading role of women in raising families in spite of new realities and challenges in the country.

Alia urged women in the state to vote for the APC on Saturday to guarantee better future for them and their children.

    Oyo

Why LP is backing Makinde, by House of Rep candidate

Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Ibadan North  Constituency in  the recent National Assembly elections, Femi Dexter Akin-Alamu, said yesteray that the party decided to support the re-election bid of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for the March 11 governorship election.

He said that the leadership of the party is of the view that the governor has shown capacity to lead Oyo State to greater heights.

Akin-Alamu, in a statement   in Ibadan, said that the governor has shown vision and the desire to engineer a modern Oyo State, adding that leaders of the Labour Party have seen that the governor’s vision tallies with their aspirations for the state.

He said: “After many thoughts, prayers and consultation with the leadership of the Labour Party in the state, I, together with other leaders of the Labour Party in Oyo State have decided to give our full and unreserved support to the person that we believe stands way above others in our assessment.

“We cannot preach a different gospel when it seems not to favour the candidate of our party. Party loyalty cannot be put above public good.”

He said that the leadership of LP had met with the party’s gubernatorial candidate for a review after the presidential election and arrived at the realisation that it was better to support the re-election bid of Governor Makinde.

He added: “I saw the need to meet with the governorship candidate of the Labour Party so as to understand his plans, vision and strategy in order to arm my convictions about his candidature so that we can go to work.

Before I could make this happen, I was invited to a meeting of all candidates and state EXCO on Wednesday and was told by the chairman that the meeting was put together to review the February 25 Elections and hear from the governorship candidate about his plans for the March 11 elections.

“At the meeting, it was acknowledged that the Labour Party indeed has great opportunities, but those opportunities must be maximized. “Since a lot of people have accused our gubernatorial candidate of doing almost nothing to win his election, he was requested to tell the assembly his plans, vision, strategy and budget for the election. He was also requested to tell how much he had to spend for the elections and if there was any shortfall between his budget and how much he had.

“The assembly wanted to know his strategy to raise the shortfall.

“Unfortunately, the gubernatorial candidate was upset about the questions, and he thought the best thing to do was walk out on everyone.

“When he left, the state EXCO reached a unanimous decision that the gubernatorial candidate lacked the seriousness, commitment, and capacity required to win the election and the party should therefore find another gubernatorial candidate from another party to support.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has foreclosed any alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition parties ahead of Saturday’s governorship/House of Assembly election in Kwara state.

His words: “Even though I never heard of this decision nor was I ever consulted. My advice is that it is very important we tread very cautiously on this and other political matters else we shall be seen as being partisan and lose our roles as Spiritual Fathers and Mentors.”

     LAGOS

I’m not stepping down for anybody, says AA candidate

The Lagos State governorship candidate of Action Alliance (AA), Mr. Tope Balogun, on Monday, said it was untrue that he had stepped down his ambition to support the re-election of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The 40-year-old computer scientist and IT expert told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that he was determined to beat Sanwo-Olu in Saturday’s Governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Balogun said: “I don’t know why this lie from the pit of hell has spread so much. I am really surprised that people can give in to such fallacies.

“I am a man of principle and I have my integrity. I am having a reason for contesting this election.

According to him, so many people have done a whole lot in the past years for the contest.

“I cannot trade them (his supporters) off for my personal gain. If they give me commissioner as reward for stepping down, it will be selfishness on my part.

“This is what so many politicians that lack principle will do, but I am an ideological politician. I am all about the masses and I am not going to step down for anybody.

“I am not stepping down now and I am not ready to step down before Saturday.

    Ogun

    Accord Party adopts Adebutu

Accord Party (AP) in Ogun  State yesterday in Abeokuta adopted Mr. Ladi Adebutu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its candidate for the March 11 governorship election.

AP Chairman in Ogun, Alhaji Tajudeen Olayokun, announced the adoption at a meeting he held with representatives of the party from the 20 local government areas of the state.

Olayokun noted that the decision to support the PDP governorship candidate was because his ideology tallied with AP’s in terms of grassroots and rural development, infrastructure, agriculture and security.

“We are supporting Ladi Adebutu because we believe he is closer to the grassroots; he has an ideology similar to that of the Accord party.

“This adoption has nothing to do with money. We have weighed other governorship candidates and we concluded that he is the best man for the job in terms of capacity building and overall development of Ogun,’’ he said.

Mr Rotimi Oke, governorship candidate of Accord Party noted that the party decided to drum up support for a candidate with competence, character and goodwill in the interest of the citizenry.

Replying, Mr. AbdulKabir Akinlade, deputy governorship candidate of the PDP, noted that the adoption would be a partnership that would further bring development to Ogun.

    Cross River

LP: We have no alliance with APC

The Labour Party (LP), yesterday, said that it had no alliance with All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River.

The party said this in a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary in the state, Dr. Lekam Ofem.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state APC Chairman, Mr. Alphonsus Eba, had at a news conference yesterday in Calabar, announced the party’s decision to endorse and adopt LP candidate for Yala State Constituency I, Brian Odey.

Eba had explained that the adoption of the LP candidate followed the Supreme Court’s judgment nullifying the candidacy of Mrs. Regina Anyogo, who was the candidate of APC.

He had said that the alliance was to ensure that supporters of LP reciprocate the gesture by voting for the APC governorship candidate, Sen. Bassey Otu, in the March 11 governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Ofem said that the party’s attention had been drawn to the statement issued by the APC leadership to the effect that LP had collapsed its structure for APC, insisting that his party had no alliance with APC or any other political party.

He said LP had a governorship candidate in the state in person of Mr. Ogar Osim, saying that he was very much in the race.

    Delta

    PDP leaders endorse Omo-Agege

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has suffered a major setback with the endorsement of All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege by prominent leaders of the PDP under the aegis of Delta Unity Group (DUG).

In a statement signed by its chairman, Board of Trustees and immediate past Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, as well as co-conveners, Chiedu Ebie, and Chief Itiako Ikpokpo Monday, DUG charged Deltans, particularly the youths to vote for the APC’s governorship candidate during Saturday’s polls.

According to the statement, the group which comprises “standing, prominent and emergent leaders” of the state PDP chapter drawn from all senatorial zones, federal and state constituencies and local government areas across Delta, reached the decision due to the desire to ensure a “state chief executive possessing the necessary level of intellect, competence and capacity to steer” the administration of the State.

“Going further, we are happy to announce that the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate for the governorship election in Delta State, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has agreed to fully integrate and incorporate the Modernisation Agenda of Olorogun David Edevbie into his Build A New Delta (BAND) governance agenda for Delta State.

    Rivers

Cole, Abe, Itubor have nothing to offer, says PDP

The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has derided the governorship candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tonye Cole; Social Democratic Party (SDP), Magnus Abe; and Labour Party (LP), Beatrice Itubor, saying they have nothing to offer the state.

The party in a statement signed by its Campaign Council’s Director of Publicity, Chief Ogbonna Nwuke, said that the way the governorship candidates of the opposition parties spoke had shown that they had no coherent action plan.

The statement said: “Tonye Cole in the course of the interview admitted that his mass transportation plan will include the monorail rail project on which over N50bn has already been wasted without any positive benefit.

“Rivers people should note that the monorail scheme that they have rejected has been re-conceived by Cole as a new conduit pipe designed to siphon public funds by the leadership of the APC.

On Abe, the statement said: “Senator Abe of the SDP on the other hand could not tell his interviewer and the public how much his educational programme will cost the Rivers people. Statistics for building development programmes are not obtained from budgets. They are obtained from available data gathered through research

“Abe who neither has an economic nor educational team that is planning his programmes displayed through his effort to hide himself behind what he claimed is the non-availability of the Rivers budget that he has no plan for Rivers people except smart and deceptive talk.

“Mrs Beatrice Itubo of the Labour Party who as a governorship candidate refuses to relinquish her position as the State Chairman of the NLC did not show when questioned by Channels that she has any grip of the real issues confronting Rivers State.

    Kano

‘We’ll not allow NNPP to rig’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano state has vowed to withstand any attempt by the opposition New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to perpetuate any form of electoral malfeasance during the forthcoming gubernatorial and state assembly elections on Saturday.

The state Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Malam Muhammad Garba, who made the assertion in a statement, said the APC was compelled to bring the plan to the attention of the public, “because this could disrupt the governorship and House of Assembly elections.”

He further stated that the state government had received credible information on how thugs will be hired from villages in Kano and beyond to upset the electoral process through violence, massive rigging, box snatching and arson.

The commissioner alleged that this time around, the NNPP was planning to bring chaos through the use of thugs to cause mayhem with a view to dispersing voters at polling units in order to have the opportunity to rig the elections and subvert the will of the people.

    Abia

Obi factor won’t affect PDP chances

The Publicity Secretary of the Abia State chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Abraham Amah has dismissed the notion that the wave created by the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi in the recent election will jeopardise the chances of the ruling party in the state in this weekend’s governorship and state House of Assembly elections.

Amah who spoke to reporters at the PDP secretariat in Umuahia, the state capital yesterday said the reason Obi got the number of votes he got in the state was that almost every member voted for the person of Obi against the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Amah said the tides would change come Saturday, March 11 as the Obi sentiment would no longer affect the voting pattern, as Abians choose their governorship and House of Assembly candidates.

Amah who is also the PDP vice chairman of Abia North, however, said the party has reached out to candidates of various political parties for a possible alliance.

On the just concluded presidential and National Assembly polls, Abraham said Abia PDP was not happy with the double standards applied by INEC in the conduct of the election in the state, a development that disenfranchised many people.

He said: “The inability of INEC to stick to extant rules and provisions of the New Electoral Act as it concerns senatorial districts in Abia State also calls to question the overall national elections which have been described by many as a charade only fit for the playbook of toddlers in the kindergarten.

“In the past few days within the start of the election, the INEC has engaged in a double-speak that leaves many wondering about their capacity and indeed intentions regarding the conduct of elections in Abia.”

Abraham cautioned Ncheta Omerekpe, a chieftain of Abia State PDP, against his unguided utterances against the party and its governorship candidate and urged Abians to ignore him.

    Plateau

‘LP not in alliance with any party

The Plateau State governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Dr. Patrick Dakum has dismissed rumours of merging with other political parties ahead of Saturday’s governorship and state House of Assembly elections.

In a statement by the Director of Media of the Dakum/Pwajok Governorship Campaign Council, Nuhu Gagara said it is a figment of the imagination of the mischief makers.

He called on LP loyalists and Plateau people to disregard such information as it is tantamount to destabilizing the party’s strategy.

The campaign council spokesman said the party has been undaunted by calls that the LP is trying to enter into an alliance with a particular political party in the state.

He said: “This is totally false as the LP is going into the governorship and the House of Assembly elections stronger, better, committed and with the chance of winning resoundingly.

“We are calling on all Obidients, Dakumlated and Edified Supporters to brace up for the March 11, 2023 governorship and House of Assembly elections. It is most laughable, unfair and unpatriotic for rumour mongers to reduce Dr. Patrick Dakum and Edward Pwajok (SAN) as fair-weather politicians, having crisscrossed the entire 17 local governments of Plateau State, spoken to PIDAN, JNI, CAN, professional groups, bodies etc more than any other candidate by insinuating that they will chicken out when there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

He added: “The duo of Dakum/Pwajok and 24 House of Assembly candidates are the best candidates, the most competent, the most experienced and above all, the most loved by the people of Plateau who have been pencilled to win the governorship elections based on the report of credible polling research bodies in the recent past in Nigeria and abroad.”

The media and publicity committee of the Dakum/Pwajok Campaign Council also called on all supporters, lovers and voters of the LP to continue to work assiduously for the success of the governorship flag bearer and all LP candidates across the 24 state constituencies in Saturday’s election.

    Kaduna

    Eight parties endorse PDP’s Ashiru

No fewer than eight governorship candidates and their political parties have endorsed the governorship candidate of the major opposition party, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Muhammad Isah Ashiru as their consensus candidate in Saturday’s governorship election in Kaduna State.

The governorship candidates are those of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), the Action Alliance (AA), the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), the Action Peoples’ Party (APP), the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the National Rescue Movement (NRM), the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and the Action Democratic Party (ADP).

The governorship candidates under the auspices of Rescue and Rebuild Governorship Candidates Forum said their support for Ashiru is total in order to rescue the state from socio-economic hardship imposed by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Addressing supporters of the PDP, the chairman of the Forum, Sanin Yaya said: “Today, we wish to announce our support and loyalty to Isah Muhammad Ashiru Kudan, the candidate of the PDP.

“We took this decision after extensive consultation with our party members as well as the good people of Kaduna State. The decision is bone out of our genuine desire to have one indivisible state, irrespective of tribal or religious differences, and we are confident that Isah Ashiru Kudan is the only candidate that will unify the state.

“This can be seen from the manner of his campaign which is aimed at building Kaduna State, and as well from the selection of his running mate which has given fair representation to both Christians and Muslims who are the two major stakeholders in the state.

“As some desperate politicians have turned the political space into a hub of religious sentiments, Isah Ashiru chose to stand by issue-based campaigns only. We want to use this opportunity to remind the good people of Kaduna State of the hardship and pain inflicted on them by this APC administration, from an unjustified high rate of taxes to authoritative leadership and ego from the increase of school fees to tertiary institutions to unlawful disengagement of teachers, local government staff and the removal of traditional rulers.

“It is on these grounds that we call on our people to stay away from the APC candidate who is only a puppet to his paymaster who will continue with their anti-masses policy in the state.

“On this note; myself, Sanin Yaya, the governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and the governorship candidates of the AA, the APM, the APP, the APGA and the NRM, as well as the leadership of the Accord Party, the ADP and the ZLP, have today February 6, 2023, wish to endorse Isah Ashiru Kudan, the Sarkin Bai Zazzau and Dr. John Ayuba as our consensus candidates.

“Therefore, we urge the good people of Kaduna State to come out in mass on Saturday to vote for Ashiru/Ayuba for a better Kaduna State.”

”You must move into action in a way that will further assure Nigerians of the ‘Renewed Hope. As a tested and trusted cerebral team leader that you are, you must in a couple of days present your transition team of cerebral men and women to give us an economic recovery blueprint.”

    A knack for wealth creation

The Deputy National Chairman (South) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Emma Eneukwu said Sen. Ahmed Tinubu’s victory was aided by his knack for wealth creation.

In his congratulatory message, Eneukwu said: “With this natural innate quality of the master strategist, Tinubu will definitely turn things around in the country.”

He said that Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor had all it takes to make Nigeria a safe and progressive habitat for all.

The deputy national chairman said the president-elect and his incoming government will leverage so well the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari to provide “a renewed hope” to the masses as stated by his campaign slogan.

Why Nigerians chose him, by  Al-Makura

Former Nasarawa State Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura has indicated that Nigerians elected Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu because of his records as Lagos state governor between 1999 and 2007.

He said his election, alongside his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, is a good omen for the growth and development of the country.

He made the remark yesterday while celebrating the party’s victory.

He said: “Nigerians should support the transition and administration of Tinubu and Shettima for them to continue developing the country to greater heights in s democratic setting.

    ‘He can provide good governance’

The governorship candidate of the Accord party in Oyo State, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, said the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is capable of providing good governance, considering his antecedent as a former governor of Lagos State.

In a congratulatory message, Adelabu said: “We expect good governance, which we know Tinubu is capable of providing, considering his antecedent as former governor of Lagos State and one of those who fought for the democracy we are enjoying today.”

He enjoined the president-elect to use the opportunity of his victory to reconcile the different sections of the country, which have been fractioned by the activities leading to the election.

    ‘Join hands to move nation

    forward’

The President and Chairman of Council, the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), Dr. Christiana Atako, has advised the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, to be magnanimous and humble in victory by running a government of inclusion.

Atako said running a government of inclusion would foster national unity and integration irrespective of religious inclination, ethnocentric and cultural diversity, and political affiliation.

She also enjoined the entire citizenry to close ranks and join hands with the incoming administration to move the nation forward as that would be the fastest way to heal the nation of the rancour and bad blood thrown up by the partisanship experienced before, during and after the election.

    Northern groups welcome

    victory

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has congratulated the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the vice president-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima and the All Progressives Congress (APC), on their recent election victory.

In a congratulatory message, its spokesman, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman also commended the youth for their participation in the elections as well as the significant role they played as INEC officials.

He added: “We appreciate the commitment expressed in his acceptance speech to robustly tackle youth unemployment, improve the condition of health, reposition our schooling system, and most importantly, improve the standard of living in the country.”

    Accord Party candidate

    congratulates Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the Accord Party in the just concluded election, Professor Christopher Imumolen has congratulated the president-elect, Bola Tinubu on his victory at the poll.

He also congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of democratic consolidation.

Imumolen in a statement urged Nigerians to maintain the same manner of sportsmanliness, calm and decorum in next week’s House of Assembly elections.

He said: “Let me officially congratulate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his hard-fought victory in Saturday’s elections.

“His emergence as Nigeria’s president may have sparked discontent in some quarters because of the imperfections witnessed in the conduct of the elections, but it can not be denied that Tinubu, who has distinguished himself as an astute politician and a symbol of hope for the country’s nascent democracy, clearly deserved his victory.

“It is in this light, I would like to urge everyone, the opposition, and even his most virulent critics to sheath their swords, embrace reason and close ranks — where possible — to make the tenure of the country’s president-elect an eventful and successful one.

    ‘Victory is evidence of

    democratic advancement’

The Muhammadu Buhari/Osinbajo Dynamic Support Group has described the victory of All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Senator Bola Tinubu as an advancement in the country’s democracy.

In a statement by its National Coordinator, Usman Ibrahim, the group also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for “making votes of Nigerian people count”.

The statement quoted Ibrahim, a chieftain of the APC as saying that “the party fielded a sellable candidate in the person of Tinubu, as well as his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima and the import of our good thinking is the victory at hand.

“A Tinubu presidency will deepen democracy as a fulcrum of socio-economic development.”

In this vein, the APC support group urged political parties, and other critical stakeholders “to as a matter of patriotism joins hands in the onerous task of moving the nation forward.”

The statement added: “There is no perfect democracy anywhere in the world. Therefore, we call on the opposition to focus on the merits of last Saturday’s presidential poll and eschew any act capable of derailing our democratic gains since the country returned to civil rule in 1999.

“Every contest must produce losers and winners. In any case, the fact that a candidate lost does not foreclose the fact that he/she can win another time.”

Cleric urges Atiku, Obi to congratulate president-elect

The founder of the Christ Apostolic Church, Wonder Chapel, Pastor Sunday Ilori has called on the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Peter Obi to accept the outcome of the general election in good faith.

Pastor Ilori appealed to Atiku and Obi who had resolved to challenge the outcome of the election to rethink and embrace the winner, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the overall best interest of peace and development.

Speaking with reporters in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, the prominent cleric who had earlier predicted Tinubu’s victory, said “the duo’s decision to go to court would be a waste of time because he enjoys heaven’s backing”.

Pastor Ilori advised them to rally behind the president-elect in his quest to bring much-needed transformation rather than chasing shadows and dissipating their energy on what God had settled.

    Lagos APC celebrates

The chairman of the APC in Lagos State, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, has congratulated Tinubu on his well-deserved victory in last Saturday’s presidential elections.

He acknowledged the wide support for Asiwaju across the board despite the keen nature of the contest.

He expressed his appreciation to all the leaders, members and sympathizers of APC for their diligence, perseverance, commitment, vigilance, and sacrifice in the days preceding the election, during and thereafter.

He appreciated all Nigerians who despite the excruciating challenges of recent times performed their responsibilities to further entrench our democracy.

He said the electoral body – INEC – the security agencies and other stakeholders will go down in history as midwives to a free, fair, transparent and historic election in Nigeria.

The role of the opposition parties who made a keen contest of the election by providing options for the electorates was significant of tremendous growth in our nascent democracy.

He said the president-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will fulfil his part of the social contract with all Nigerians by delivering in totality on his manifesto of “Renewed Hope” to usher in an era of peace, security, prosperity, nationwide growth and our restoration to a place of pride in the comity of nations.

Nigerians have chosen a prepared president whose selling point remains his antecedent, pedigree and unwavering commitment to progressive governance.

Heal open wounds, Modu Sheriff tells Tinubu

Former Borno State governor, Alli Modu Sheriff has called on the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take proactive steps to heal the wounds across the country caused by tribal and religious sentiments.

Modu Sheriff, in a congratulatory message signed by the Deputy Chairman of the Ali Modu Sheriff Political Family, Dr Cairo Ojougboh, noted that the wounds have caused division, suspicion and alienation among Nigerians and must be healed.

He expressed optimism that Tinubu will meet the expectations of Nigerians of birthing a new country with a good team.

He also urged the president-elect to give room to all who want to make contributions to move the country forward, as constructive criticism should also be welcomed to help put things in check.

The message reads: “Be magnanimous in victory and let your doors be open to all who want to make contributions to move the country forward, constructive criticism should also be welcomed as it helps to put things in check most times.

    Ex-Afenifere secretary, Arogbofa congratulates Tinubu

The immediate past Secretary-General of Afenifere, Seinde Arogbofa (OFR) has celebrated the electoral victory of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Arogbofa, in a statement yesterday, expressed his confidence that Tinubu will uphold the existence of each component that constitutes the country.

The statement reads: “We are happy at the emergence of a true federalist in the person of Senator Bola Tinubu as President-Elect of Nigeria. We are convinced he will be able to prevent the swallowing up of any of the major components that constitute the Federal nature of the country and still allow the minor groups to exist without being suffocated.

“As Afenifere, we believe Tinubu will keep to our demands of him when he visited our leader, Chief Rueben Fasoranti, in Akure on October 30, 2022, to the effect that he should address (i) Security (ii) Economy (iii) restructuring and restoration of unity in the country.

“We congratulate him and rejoice with Nigeria. We congratulate Africa and promise to work with him to turn things around for the better. We want to be vindicated at the end of the day. We pray God saw him through the campaign rigours to see him through his tenure successfully, safe and sound.”

    Forum sends greetings

The Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries (ALARHOSPS) described Tinubu’s victory as ‘a testament to his wide acceptance across Nigeria’.

A statement by its President, Femi Olugbile, and Secretary Jafar Sanuth, hailed the President-elect, saying it is ‘a confirmation of his antecedents as a firm believer in democratic values and ideologies which he stood for and fought for over the years’.

Go to court over presidential election result, says UN

The United Nations (UN) has called on political parties and candidates aggrieved with the results of the presidential elections to take the misgivings up legally and constitutionally.

Speaking with NAN in New York, Stéphane Dujarric, UN spokesperson, said political parties should maintain peace, but are free to approach the tribunal for any grievances over the declaration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the presidential election held on Saturday.

While the results were being announced, agents of the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had alleged manipulation of the result.  They, therefore, staged a walk out from the venue of the announcement.

Also, the candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Thursday, claimed that the election was not free and fair.

But according to Dujarric, Nigeria has a strong history of peaceful transition of power.

He said the UN had offered technical support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), adding that the aid yielded “some” results.

Dujarric said although the UN did not play a role in observing the elections, he said it is common for tensions to arise whenever results do not sit well with the people.

“It is important at this point in any election, in any country, and we’ve seen it in the north, we’ve seen it in the south and east and west. We’ve seen issues of great tension following elections when people didn’t accept the results.”

Dujarric called for calm in the country, saying it would take a process to see desired results.

He added that the legal use of seeking solutions to the problems arising from the election results would play a role in stabilising the country.

“It is important that all stakeholders work for the better, for the stability of the country and use existing legal and constitutional channels to challenge, if they so wish, any election results,” the UN spokesperson said.

“What is important is that as in any election, any… that if any candidate or group of candidates has an issue with the results that they go through the established legal and constitutional channels to work out their challenges.

“And it is very important for everyone to remain calm as that process or these processes play out.”

    Asari-Dokubo praises Wike, attacks Amaechi

Alh. Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, the foremost Niger Delta freedom fighter, celebrated Tinubu’s victory at his hometown in Buguma, Rivers State.

In a unique celebration, Dokubo, who poured white powder all over his body, denounced the alleged roles a former Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, played against Tinubu during the election.

But he heaped praises on the Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, for fulfilling his promises

Dokubo while addressing his supporters said: “How is Chibuike Amaechi feeling in his house? Wike is a man. Wike was my enemy before. But now he is no longer my enemy. Wike is the lion that protects the city. He is a warrior. Amaechi has failed”.

Dokubo, in their solidarity songs, poured encomiums on Wike but lampooned Amaechi for allegedly working against the victory of Tinubu.

The freedom fighter had before the election vowed to work for Tinubu, whom he described as his bossom friend.  He had testified how the former Lagos State Governor assisted him in his time of need.

Cocoa farmers: Accept outcome of presidential election

The Cocoa and Plantain Farmers Association of Nigeria (CFAN) has appealed to presidential candidates of both the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to allow peace reign in the country by accepting the outcome of last Saturday’s general elections.

It urged them to cooperate with the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to make Nigeria a better place and the country prosperous.

The group also urged former president Olusegun Obasanjo to put himself in the position of an elder statesman and work for the peace and prosperity of the country.

CFAN’s president, Chief Ayodele Ojo Falabona, in a statement issued in Akure, advised clerics to stop using the name of God to deceive Nigerians especially in electoral contests.

“We thank some of our clergy men who didn’t say what they didn’t see. We are begging Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to put himself in the position of Gowon, Abdusalama and Goodluck Jonathan and stop being envious as well as self-centered because he’s nothing before God.

Falabona assured Nigerians that Tinubu would turn the fortunes of the country around in all sectors of the economy.

The cocoa farmer appealed to Tinubu to invest much in agriculture especially in the cocoa industry as it remained the best source of curbing unemployment.

“Asiwaju has never changed party and he will always support anyone who wants to contest under the party. He endures and he understands politics, He forgives easily and has no enemy.”

Okorie to Nigerians: Rally round president-elect

Former National Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Chekwas Okorie, has urged Nigerians to support the President – Elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a successful administration.

Okorie while congratulating Tinubu over his victory at last Saturday’s presidential election said: “I congratulate Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu on his victory at the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria. The election was keenly contested and the use of technology showed a balanced election results different from what used to be the case. The outcome of the elections has also thrown up a more balanced National Assembly. Nigerians should expect a more robust and vibrant 10th National Assembly.

A statement issued by him on Thursday said: “It is with every sense of responsibility and patriotism that, l appeal to those whose preferred candidates did not win the 2023 presidential election to accept and respect the mandate given to the president-elect by the majority of Nigerian voters. This is what democracy is all about.

“In the same token, l appeal to all the contestants for the office of President of Nigeria, who may be aggrieved by the outcome of the election to avail themselves of the available legal window to address their grievances. Any resort to self-help will not be in the interest of anybody.

“l urge all well-meaning Nigerians to rally round Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu to succeed in his onerous task to tackle Nigeria’s multifaceted challenges. His success will definitely translate to our collective success as a nation”.

“I urge the president-elect to take immediate steps to bind the open wounds that have caused a lot of division, suspicion and alienation among Nigerian citizens. This is a sine qua non to the success of any policy he may enunciate to promote and grow the economy as well as provide jobs and other democracy dividends to the Nigerian people. I am confident that the well-known political sagacity and savvy of Tinubu, shall be put to maximum use at this time”.

    SDP: We won’t challenge

    presidential election result

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has said that it will not challenge the declared results of the presidential election.

The party, which won some senatorial and House of Representatives seats in last Saturday’s elections, however said, it will be contesting results of the Senate and House of Representatives seats.

National Chairman of SDP, Alhaji Shehu Gabam who stated this during a press conference at the party’s headquarters on Thursday, said his party won many seats, but was denied adding that they are going to challenge the results of such places in the court.

“The National leadership of our great party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), heartily congratulates all Nigerians for the peaceful and successful presidential and national assembly elections that took place on Saturday, February 25, 2023, and His Excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress candidate for winning the keenly contested Presidential election.

“The 2023 presidential election turned out with the most unique outcome, considering the national spread and the equal number of states won by the three leading candidates. Also, it’s noteworthy that it came out as having the lowest voter turn-out in the recent history of presidential elections in Nigeria, with less than a total of 25 million votes out of over 90 million registered voters nationwide!

    He will transform

    Nigeria, says Isijola

A chieftain of the APC, in Ondo State, and coordinator of the Teni Teni support group for the Asiwaju/Shettima Campaign, Otunba Rasak Isijola, has congratulated Tinubu, on winning the presidential election.

Isijola, who is the immediate past vice chairman of the APC in Ondo State, stated this in a congratulatory message issued by the group to the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

He said with Tinubu and Shettima’s victory, Nigeria will be better for it. “Citizens will no longer go abroad in search of greener pastures as there will be an enabling environment for everyone to maximize their potential,” he added.

Isijola said Tinubu’s presidency will continue to build on the legacy of President Muhammadu Buhari in the areas of agriculture, infrastructure development, social intervention project, and youth and women empowerment amongst others across the federation.

He said: “As a two-term Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu turned around the economy of the state and put it on a continuous and sustainable growth trajectory, while Shettima on the other hand as governor of Borno State, the state witnessed monumental strides despite the threats posed by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups.”

  • Edo PDP crisis: Any respite in sight for the factions?

Edo PDP crisis: Any respite in sight for the factions?

With each of the two factions of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State claiming victory regarding last week’s decision by the Supreme Court in the dispute over candidates’ lists, the end to the disagreement seems far because of some pending cases in court. ERIC IKHILAE reports.

It was a confusing scenario last Wednesday as members of the two contending factions in the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State went ecstatic upon the pronouncement of the Supreme Court. The apex court had, in its verdict, dismissed about nine appeals relating to the dispute over which of the candidates produced by the two factions in the Edo PDP could fly the party’s flag in this year’s general elections.

The Supreme Court, in its judgment, found that the appeal, marked: SC/CV/1575/2022, and filed by Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama and others, against Matthew Iduoriyekemwen and others, was incompetent, having raised fresh issues not canvassed at the Court of Appeal. Justice Centus Nweze, in the lead judgment, held that an appeal must be based on issues contended at the lower court (Court of Appeal) to qualify for a review by the Supreme Court. Justice Nweze added: “Any ground of appeal that does not challenge issues raised at the lower court is incompetent.” He then proceeded to declare: “I enter judgment in favour of the respondents.”

As agreed by lawyers to parties at the hearing of all the appeals filed, the judgment in the appeal by Ogbeide-Ihama was applied to other sister appeals and cross-appeals. The appeals to which the judgment was applied are: SC/CV/1575A/2022; SC/CV/1591/2022, and SC/CV/1617/2022 filed by members of the faction loyal to the former state Chairman of the party and now National Vice Chairman (South-South), Dan Orbih, with the exclusion of the two appeals – SC/CV/1615/2022 and SC/CV/1625/2022 – earlier withdrawn by their legal team.

Also affected by the February 1 judgment by the Supreme Court were the four cross-appeals filed by members of the Obaseki faction, marked: SC/CV/1615/2022; SC/CV/1616/2022; SC/CV/1625/2022, and SC/CV/1675B/2022. While Obaseki faction was happy that the appeals by members of the Orbih faction were dismissed, the Orbih faction was equally upbeat about the fact that the cross-appeals by members of the Obaseki faction were also affected by the Supreme Court’s decision.

The appeals by the Orbih faction, it was learnt, were against an aspect of the decision of the Court of Appeal in Benin, which struck out its appeal against an earlier judgment by the Federal High Court in Benin ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the candidates produced by the Obaseki faction. On the other hand, the Obaseki faction’s cross-appeals, it was learnt, challenged the aspect of the judgment by the Court of Appeal, Benin, which struck out the appeal by the Orbih faction instead of dismissing it.

    How the factions got here

The Edo PDP became factionalised shortly after Obaseki won his second term election in September 2020 on the platform of the party, to which he decamped after he was disqualified by his former party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). The inability of the party’s stakeholders to manage their victory, which manifested in disagreements over the composition of the new government and the party’s state executive, created a division that has refused to align.

With each faction unwilling to yield ground for the other, both factions conducted parallel primary elections, from which two sets of candidates emerged for this year’s national and state legislative elections. Confronted with two lists, INEC failed to recognise any, promoting each of the factions to head for the court to compel the electoral body to act. While the Orbih faction went before the Abuja division of the Federal High Court, the Obaseki faction headed before the Benin division of the same Federal High Court.

In a judgment on May 26, 2022, Justice Inyang Ekwo (of the Federal High Court, Abuja) ordered INEC to recognise only the ad-hoc delegates produced by the Orbih faction. Justice Ekwo, in the judgment in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/598/2022, filed by the 581 delegates elected on April 30, 2022, held that PDP and other defendants in the suit were bound by Section 84 (5) of the Electoral Act 2022 and Section 15 of the PDP constitution relating to delegates elections.

The suit was filed in the names of five of the delegates – Monday Osagie, Reuben Ekhosuehi, Adeyanba Osaro, Magdalene Osawe and Imariabe Oghogho. Flowing from the May 26 decision, Justice Ekwo, in a later decision, in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/808/2022, ordered INEC to recognise and accept the candidates that emerged from the primaries conducted by the Orbih faction, and in which the ad-hoc candidates participated.

Acting on the order by Justice Ekwo, INEC wrote the National Chairman of the PDP, Iyiocha Ayu, to demand for the list of candidates from Edo PDP. The letter, dated: June 27, 2022, was signed by INEC’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, was titled: “Notification of pending orders in suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/807/2022 between Dr. Michael Onolememen & 2 Ors. V. INEC; Suit No. FHC/ABJ/808/ between Barr. Nosa Adams & 8 Prs. V. INEC and Suit No. FHC/ABJ/809/2022 between Christabel O. Ekwu & 23 Ors. V. INEC and the need to Comply with them.” It reads in part: “The commission hereby draws the attention of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to the order of the court arising from the three (3) suits listed above.

“In line with the order of court, the commission is restrained from accepting and recognising any list of candidates other than the list containing the names of the plaintiffs as the PDP’s duly nominated candidates for the election of the seats of senators representing the senatorial zones of Edo North, Edo South and Edo Central of Edo State; the twenty-four House of Assembly constituencies across Edo State. Accordingly, the commission expects the PDP to forward the nomination forms of the respective candidates as ordered by the Federal High Court, Abuja.”

Shortly after, the Benin division of the Federal High Court released another judgment, ordering INEC to accept the candidates produced by the Obaseki faction. Justice Saleh Shuaibu, who rendered the judgment, noted that, based on past decisions by the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal, the state chapter of a political party lacked the powers, under the law, to conduct party primaries. Justice Shuaibu held that it was only the National Working Committee (NWC) of a political party that possesses the power to conduct party primaries. The judge added: “There is nothing before the Honourable Court to show that the primaries in which the 4th to 39th defendants participated was conducted by the National Working Committee of the PDP.

“Rather, their primaries were conducted by the Edo State chapter of the PDP. In my view, the power of INEC under Section 84 of the Electoral Act is limited to monitoring of party primary elections and does not extend to preparing or declaring the results of that election. This remains the law. In the light of the foregoing, the fourth defendant (ININE cannot rely on results prepared by the first defendant, Edo PDP.”

    At the Court of Appeal

Some members of the Obaseki faction challenged the May 26 decision of the Federal High Court, Abuja at the Court of Appeal in Abuja. In a judgment on July 25, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, upturned the judgment by Justice Ekwo, holding among others, the issues relating to the selection of delegates form part of the internal affairs of a political party, on which a court cannot exercise jurisdiction.

The appellate court held that the Federal High Court lacked the jurisdiction to have entertained the suit by the 581 delegates. On its part, the Orbih faction equally appeals the decision of the Federal High Court, Benin, at the Court of Appeal, Benin. In its judgment in November last year, the Benin division of the Court of Appeal upheld the preliminary objection raised against the competence of the appeal and struck it out on the grounds that the appellant failed to transmit the complete record of appeal. Being the penultimate court, the three member panel of the Court of Appeal, Benin, proceeded to hear the appeal on the merit and allowed it, declaring that it was meritorious.

     At the Supreme Court

In reaction to the July 25, 2022, judgment by the Court of Appeal, Abuja, some members of the Orbih faction appealed to the Supreme Court. In its judgment on September 30, 2022, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Amina Augie, affirmed the earlier judgment of the Court of Appeal. The apex court held that the subject of the appeal (matters relating to the selection of delegates) were issues on which the court lacked jurisdiction, because they relate to the internal affairs of political party.

The judgment was on the appeal marked: SC/CV/980/2022 by Monday Iyore Osagie & others against PDP and others, which judgment was to apply to a sister appeal marked: SC/CV/979/2022 involving the same parties, and which arose from the same earlier judgment of the Court of Appeal, Abuja. The Supreme Court was emphatic in holding that delegates do not have a right of action in matters relating to the conduct of political parties’ primaries.

Justice Emmanuel Agim noted, in the lead judgment, that the appeal was against the judgment of the Court of Appeal delivered on the July 25, 2022, in the appeal marked: CA/ABJ/CV/594/2022, setting aside the judgment of the Federal High Court delivered on May 26, 2022 in a suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/518/2022. Justice Agim proceeded to hold that: “In the light of the foregoing, I hold that the Court of Appeal correctly held that the subject matter of the suit leading to this appeal is an internal affair of the first respondent (the PDP), and to be resolved by its internal mechanism. It (the subject matter) is not justiciable and therefore, not within the jurisdiction of the trial court(the Federal High Court).

“The trial court wrongly assumed jurisdiction to entertain and determined the issues involved. The Court of Appeal rightly set aside the trial court’s decision. Having determined that the Court of Appeal rightly held that the trial court lacked jurisdiction to have entertained and determined this matte, no useful purpose would be served by considering and determining other issues in this appeal. On the whole, this appeal fails as it lacks merit, and it is accordingly dismissed,” Justice Agim said.

Justice Augie, in her contribution, held that the appellants (who were delegates) lacked the legal right to have filed the suit at the Federal High Court, not being aspirants in the primary election of the Edo PDP. She said the court could entertain complaints from aspirants about the conduct of primaries, adding that “the court cannot open that door to delegates.”

The morning after Supreme Court’s verdict

Shortly after the February 1 pronouncement by the Supreme Court, the Obaseki faction claimed victory, with the state Deputy Governor, Phillips Shuaibu, who witnessed the proceedings, expressing delight that the dispute was finally laid to rest and in favour of his principal’s faction. Also, a senior member of the Obaseki faction’s legal team, Mahmud Magaji (SAN), argued the issue has been fully resolved with the latest decision by the Supreme Court.

Magaji said: “All the issues surrounding the nomination of candidates by the Edo PDP were subsumed in the appeals that were decided. There is nothing left to be said by the apex court. They (Orbih faction) filed about nine appeals from a single judgment of the Court of Appeal. At the point of hearing the appeals, the Justices of the Supreme Court said there was no time for them to hear all the appeals separately.

“The appellants were asked to choose one, to which the others would abide. And they chose the one which the court dismissed. I understand that some appeals are pending before the Court of Appeal. But, I do not see the Supreme Court reversing itself on this issue. The matter has been decided and our clients (candidates from the Obaseki faction) have won. They (the Orbih faction) should go and prepare for next time,” Magaji said.

On its part, the Orbih faction was equally joyous, arguing that the apex court’s decision has not fully resolved the dispute over which of the two lists of candidates was authentic. A member of the Orbih faction’s legal team (who prayed not to be named because he was not authorised to speak) argued that the Supreme Court, in its February 1 judgment, did not give victory to any of the factions, contrary to the impression being created.

He said: “What the Supreme Court did was to simply dismiss the appeals by the Orbih group and the cross appeals by the Obaseki faction. “No reason was adduced. The court said details of the judgement will come in few days. Parties should therefore wait to receive the certified true copy that will explain the apex court’s decision. For me, and our team, we believe the status quo remains, because the Obaseki faction has the judgment of the Federal High Court in Benin, while the Orbih faction has the judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

“The Obaseki faction’s appeal against the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja has been heard and judgment is being awaited. I am optimistic that we will emerge victorious,” he said.

    The pending cases

The Nation learnt that, as pointed out by the lawyer from the Orbih faction, there are appeals pending before the Court of Appeal, filed mainly by some members of the Obaseki faction. The appeals are said to be against the latter judgments by Ekwo in the cases marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/807/2022; FHC/ABJ/CS/808/2022, and FHC/ABJ/CS/809/2022, in which the judge ordered INEC to accept Orbih faction’s candidates. Another appeal that could be pending is the one (if any) refiled by the Orbih faction in reaction to the Court of Appeal, Benin’s decision striking out its appeal against the judgment given in favour of the Obaseki faction by Justice Shuaibu. “I do not know if they refiled, because ordinarily, if an appeal is struck out, the appellant could refile,” another lawyer close to the Obaseki faction said.

  • Barter trade returns in Benue as naira scarcity bites harder

Barter trade returns in Benue as naira scarcity bites harder

    • Farmers exchange raw yams, cassava, others for cooked food from vendors
    • Indigent women turned down in deals lament fate
    • Hunger plagues families as multi-million-naira farm produce rot away

Many homes in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State are ravaged by hunger following their inability to sell their farm produce and earn income. The challenge stems from the naira scarcity that is plaguing the country from the poor implementation of the naira redesigning policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Farm produce worth millions of naira are rotting away, and to survive each day, the people have returned to the  antiquated practice of trade by barter. Unfortunately, many of the people, especially women, have have had the items they have to offer in barter arrangements rejected. They are consequently ravaged by hunger and frustration, INNOCENT DURU reports

Memunat Simon, a widow based in Odugbehon community in Agatu area of Benue State, looked miserable and dejected as she fruitlessly walked round the village market in search of someone she could give her food item in order to get some fish to cook soup for her hungry children.

She had shouted herself hoarse from seeking the attention of anyone interested in what she had to offer.

“Nobody has looked in my direction since morning. They are all avoiding me like a plague because all I can offer is beans,” she said in an emotion laden voice.

“My throat has grown hoarse because I have been shouting for anybody that has fish to take my beans. Nobody seems to be interested. If it was yam or cassava, I would have seen someone to take it from me,” she said.

Following her inability to sell her farm produce to earn income that she could use to cater for her children, Memunat agonisingly said her family has been helplessly in the face of ravaging hunger.

Her words: “My children and I dying silently from hunger. I am a widow and I have nobody to support me.  I have no money to buy anything. I brought beans to the market but nobody bought it and nobody is willing to accept it in exchange for yam or fish.

“People who have fish bluntly refused to give me attention, not to talk of collecting my beans in exchange for their fish.

“Last night, I cooked the beans and served it with soaked garri for my children to eat. We had eaten the same thing before then.

“I can’t continue to serve them the same thing every time. They are tired of eating beans and garri.

“That is why I came out today to look for someone who would take my beans and give me something else. But because it is beans, nobody wants to come close to me.”

Like many other Nigerians, the embattled widow is also suffering from the challenge of getting back all or part of the old notes she had deposited in the bank.

She said: “I went and deposited the small quantity of old notes that I had in the bank. They have refused to give the money back to us since then.

“Oga, you people should pity us. You people should pity us. Please pity us,” she cried, mistaking our correspondent for a government official.

Bose Paul, who hails from Odejo part of Agatu Local Government Area, also had a similar challenge. She had gone to the market with okro in search of someone that would be willing to give her fish in exchange. But her efforts were fruitless after combing every nook and cranny of the market.

She said: “I don’t have money to buy fish to make soup for my family so I brought okro to collect fish. I have money in the bank but I can’t access it.

“Life has never been this rough for us. People who have fish refused to collect okro in exchange. I can’t go home and  start eating okro like that. I don’t even have palm oil and other ingredients that I would need to cook soup with it.

“If I put the okro that I have inside boiling water, will I not put oil, maggi, pepper, oil and fish to make it edible? Is it only okro I will be eating? This is reprehensible. Hunger has dried my children and I up.”

“In the past few days,” the embattled woman  added, “we have been eating only yam. I didn’t even have ordinary palm oil and pepper to give it a better taste the children would enjoy.”

Following the scarcity of naira notes, whih has made it difficult for people to buy goods, Bose and other women in the area have watched their farm produce rot away. “All the things that we kept  in the house to sell have all spoilt because there is nobody to buy them. People don’t have cash to buy anything.

“As farmers, most of our produce is highly perishable and they have really been perishing. Our investments and efforts have gone down the drain. Nobody cares for us and about us.

“Now that we have suffered all this huge losses, nobody will come and help us at the end of the day.

“The government doesn’t care about us. They don’t even know if we are existing.”

She noted with despair that their predicament had been worsened by mindless attacks from herdsmen which she said had failed to abate. “The government is so insensitive to our plight that they say or do nothing about the torments we are going through at the hands of herders.

“If you go to the farm and get caught by herders, they will beat the hell out of you and could even kill you. The problem is not abating and it seems nobody cares.

“We have been living at the mercy of herders all these years and now the challenge of naira scarcity has compounded our woes.

“I can even say that our forefathers who didn’t witness civilization are better off because they were never prey for herders, and they ate whatever they wanted from their farms and not anything they saw as it is in our case now.”

17-year-old Blessing Kilonwa, whose parents had asked to go and exchange cassava for fish, also didn’t find the exercise cheering.

“It is an arduous task,” she said, even though she had an item that many people would eagerly accept in exchange for others.

She said: “I have brought cassava to exchange with someone who has fish. If I don’t see anyone to exchange my cassava with, I will go back home and that means we would have to soak garri in water and drink for the day. If anybody in the house does not  want to take soaked garri, they will roast yam and eat it like that.”

The living condition in the area, according to her, is so hard that some people, because they lack money to cook at home, would take large quantity of raw food to vendors to collect a plate of food they need to survive for the moment.

She said: ”Some food vendors accept the raw food and give cooked food to some of the people while some insist on collecting cash. When the vendor insists on cash, you will almost weep for the person as tears would well up in their eyes.

“You w ould see the children of such people wailing uncontrollably when their parents fail to get food for them.

“You can’t really understand what I am saying until you witness it. The human in us has been taken away. We are suffering in the midst of abundance.”

In a humble remark, Blessing said: “My family is not too much better than any of those people. We have all become beggars in our state which prides itself as the food basket of the nation.”

She said her parents did not have money for fish and that “is why they sent me to come and look for someone who  would take cassava from me and give me fish.

“The cassava that I brought is much but the fish in the market is not much. I will accept whatever quantity of fish anybody gives me in exchange for the cassava.

“If I don’t accept it, the fish owner will walk away  and before you know it, someone  with even more quantity of cassava will agree to exchange it for the small quantity of fish.

“We give out cassava or yam to collect rice from anybody that has and willing to exchange with us.”

Blessing also expressed regrets about how the menace of herders has devastated their land and economy.

She sai: “My parents are farmers but the herders have vandalised their farms and ate their yams. The incident occurred last week Sunday.

“If the herders meet you on the farm, they will collect your phone and everything you have on you. You will be very lucky to escape unhurt.

“We still manage to go to the farm in spite of the attacks, but we don’t stay so long like that each time we manage to go.  When we go to the farm by 6am, we must return before 9am or 10am. There is hunger in my place.”

    More residents groan

For Memuma Adamu, a yam farmer and seller in the neighbourhood, life in Agatu has become a shadow of itself.

She said: “People don’t have money to buy what they want. I want to look for someone to give me fish so that I can give yam to the person.

My family and I have not eaten since yesterday because we don’t have money to buy something to eat. Before yesterday, we had been roasting yam to eat, but it has become boring. The children in particular want to eat something else.

“It has been very challenging to get someone to take my tubers of yam and give me fish. I am fagged out as you  can see from walking about in search of someone to collect my tubers of yam to give me fish.

“If I don’t get anybody, I will have to go and roast yam again for the family to eat. It is so bad that we don’t even have money to buy palm oil to eat the yam.

“The action of the government is callous. They didn’t consider people like us who depend on daily income to survive.”

The community leader, Mathew Akubo, said: “Our people are surviving on trade by barter but it is not everything that can be obtained through that.

“People don’t accept beans, okro, pepper, tomatoes and a few others. The people bringing fish don’t like beans. They have pepper and okro in their place, so they will not accept it in a barter deal.

“This makes those produce we have in large quantities to rot in our houses because we can neither sell them  nor exchange them for other food items.”

In spite of his position in the community, he said he also engages in trade by barter.

He said: “This morning, I gave out cassava to collect fish from another person.  If you give them big cassava, they may give you two fish or three, and they are usually small. If it’s okay by you, you will agree and if it is not okay for you, you leave it and keep searching for another person as I said earlier.

“All the things we harvested to sell in the market have all spoilt. We can only  eat  the little we can. The rest is meant for the market in order to earn income needed to attend to family needs and expansion of our farm business. But all that is not possible now because nobody has money to buy anything. We have worked and slaved for nothing.

“The challenge of naira scarcity is affecting us badly.  We don’t have money to buy anything. We go to the market with our cassava and exchange them with women who bring fish. We give them cassava or yam and they give us fish.

“We don’t measure what we give.  If you put cassava or yam in a basin, they will give you fish. If you don’t like what they give to you in exchange, they will leave you and go elsewhere.  That is what we have been doing all this while to survive.”

Like earlier responders, he said “herders are back to the business of unleashing terror on our people.  They come in large numbers from the riverine area to our side now.

“We don’t go to farm anymore. If they catch any woman on the farm, they will rape her. If the herders are 10, they will rape the woman one after another.

“One of our men was coming home recently and unfortunately fell into the hands of the herders.  The herders were 10  and they raped the woman in turns.

“About a week ago, they held another woman around Odejo and took her into the bush and raped her.

“Three days ago, one old woman from Ugbojo went to her farm. They caught her and beat her mercilessly.  They cut her with a knife on the neck and the stomach. The victim was rushed to Obagaji for treatment. The woman died yesterday (Sunday).”

As a community, he said: “We have been reporting to security agencies but nothing has been done to stop the menace. We have soldiers at Obagaji and one other places.

“Look at the distance from here to Obagaji. Because of the terrible state of the road, it will take you two and a half hours to get to Obagaji from here. From here to Okokolo, there is no road again.

“The herders blocked the road. From Odugbehon to Ikovi, they have also blocked the road. We only have one  way out from Odugbehon to Osugudu. The herders have surrounded us.   We don’t have anything to do again and have nobody to assist us.”

Corroborating the community leader’s remark, Peter Eigege, a prominent member of the area said: “The problems caused by naira scarcity have become something else here.  There is no money in our market and as you can see, people are surviving by exchanging what they have with someone who has something else to offer.

“Because we are producers of yam, our people mainly have yam to exchange for other things  with people from other places. People from riverine areas bring fish to our community to exchange them with tubers of yam and cassava.

“For you to know how bad it is, our people take raw yam to restaurants to collect plates of cooked food to eat and survive. Some of the restaurant owners are surviving through the assistance of their husbands who  engage in business activities that make some quantities of cash available to them.

“Our markets are scanty. People from other communities that used to come and do business here cannot come because they don’t have money.

“Trade by barter was something that our forefathers did and it went into extinction many decades ago. It is unfortunate that such antiquated practice is coming up in this modern world in a manner that is more crude than what our forebears experienced. ”

“What to eat has become a big problem for our people.”

He added: “Our plight is compounded by the  menace of herders. They have been attacking, killing and vandalizing our farms at will.

“We are entertaining fears about coming out to vote on Saturday.  We don’t know what will happen next. We want to come out and vote but these herdsmen are our problem.

CBN left us out of rural cash swap programme

The troubled people of Agatu berated the Central Bank of Nigeria for leaving them out of its naira swap in rural areas programme.

The CBN, last month launched a Cash Swap Programme in partnership with Super Agents and Deposit Money Banks, DMBs, to enable rural dwellers and those with limited access to formal financial services to exchange old  naira notes for the redesigned notes.

Director, Financial Markets Department of the Bank, Dr. Angela Sere-Ejembi, had disclosed this when she led a team to the popular Modern Market and North Bank Market all in Makurdi to sensitise traders and their customers on the redesigned naira notes and the urgent need to return the old notes to commercial banks for new ones.

Incidentally, the people of Agatu alleged that the programme was not extended to their area.

Decrying the development, Hon Bawa Haruna, a notable member of the area said: “We didn’t benefit from it. We only heard that they did such in places outside this area but they never deemed it fit to come here.

“If Agatu is left out of the programme, which rural community benefitted then?

“It is not too late. The CBN  should extend the programme to our community so that the burden that our people are carrying will lessen.”

Council laments inability to get revenue from markets

Consequent upon the inability of traders to make sales and earn income, the local council in the area said it has not been getting revenue from the traders.

The Supervisory Councilor for Revenue, Hon Friday Anyebe, said:  “We have not been able to collect revenue from the market because there is no money in the hands of the traders. We are just patrolling the market for official purposes.

“We don’t take food items in place of money as revenue. I will go back  to the council and give them a report of what is happening in the market.

“The naira scarcity had crippled economic activities in our community. Our people now depend on exchange of food items to survive.”

  • A heart of gold lighting up Lagos

A heart of gold lighting up Lagos

From the cosy ambience of the boardroom to the murky – and sometimes turbulent – Nigeria’s political waters, Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru has completed a transition that appears seamless. In this report, Associate Editor ADEKUNLE YUSUF traces the exceptional career trajectory of this boardroom guru-turned-politician whose presence in the country’s upper legislative chamber is enlivening Lagos politics with his unobtrusive style of deploying his years of boardroom capital and strategic leadership skill set to better a lot of his constituents

Dub the take-off of his political career as a moment of pure serendipity and you may not be too far from the truth. But that portrayal is certainly not the whole truth about the career journey of Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru (FCA) who currently represents the people of Lagos East in the 9th National Assembly.

Thus, for a more Panoptic picture, this seasoned banker and politician is better depicted as a seasoned professional in politics, completely different from the teeming crowd of professional politicians dotting the country’s political firmament without the slightest trace of meaningful service to the people.

A serendipitous moment, which saw Abiru exit his plum job as the Group Managing Director (GMD) of Polaris Bank, happened when the senatorial seat became vacant as Bayo Oshinowo, the former occupant, fell into the icy hands of death on February 15, 2020. For Lagosians, the sad incident, like someone digging a hole in the backyard to bury a hamster, but ending up finding a treasure chest of jewels, tilted the wheel of fortune in favour of the ex-banker. Unsurprisingly, since then, the people of Lagos have been the better for it through the effective legislative representation Abiru embodies. Within twenty months in office, Abiru has won the hearts of Lagosians who fondly nicknamed him the #DoingGood Senator!

An accomplished economist, chartered accountant and foremost banker, Abiru rose to the top of his career as a finance professional and a banker by dint of hard work, before becoming a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC); winning the by-election with a landslide (pocketing 89 per cent of total votes cast).

But then, by the time the seasoned banker, joined the Senate in December 2020, he was not new to the political terrain. He had previously served with distinction in the government of Lagos State under the transformational leadership of Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) as the Commissioner for Finance between 2011 and 2013 before returning to First Bank of Nigeria PLC as an Executive Director.

He was appointed by the Central Bank of Nigeria as the Group Managing Director (GMD) of Skye Bank and led the spectacular rescue of Skye Bank and its transformation to the new Polaris Bank. As the GMD, Abiru spearheaded the turnaround of Skye Bank, a critical assignment which he successfully accomplished, leading to the birth of the new Polaris Bank Limited as a leading, profitable, digitally-enabled and systemically important Tier 2 bank in Nigeria.

Before his appointment as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance from 2011 to 2013, his professional career took him through several reputable institutions, including Deloitte (formerly Akintola Williams and Co), Guaranty Trust Bank PLC (1991-2000), First Atlantic Trust Bank and First Bank of Nigeria PLC. (2002-2016). He was the Group Managing Director of Skye Bank (2016-2018) and the pioneer Group Managing Director of Polaris Bank (2018-2020).

As Commissioner for Finance in Lagos, he led the state’s floating of an N80 billion bond, which earned it the EMEA Finance Best Local Currency Bond Award for 2012. His efforts led to a significant increase in Land Use charges generated by the state government and the widening of the tax net in order to improve revenue generation by 2013. He returned to First Bank of Nigeria PLC in 2013 as Executive Director after a very successful two-year period in the Lagos State Cabinet.

The distinguished Senator has also served on various boards, including Airtel Mobile Networks Limited; FBN Capital Limited (now FBN Quest Merchant Bank Limited); FBN Bank Sierra –Leone Limited; and Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System PLC (NIBSS).

With this intimidating credential and enviable track record of professional excellence, Abiru joined the Senate, where he has deployed his competencies in banking and finance, public financial management, corporate finance, economy, industry and commerce, accounting and technology to the development of Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.

A quiet and easy-going personality, the former banker has earned a reputation as an acknowledged philanthropist who has contributed immensely to poverty alleviation, empowerment and community development in different parts of Lagos State.

During his illustrious career across Deloitte, Guaranty Trust Bank, First Atlantic Trust Bank, First Bank of Nigeria PLC., Lagos State Government, Skye Bank and Polaris Bank, he has consistently exhibited resourcefulness, integrity, innovation, accountability and commitment to excellence.

Abiru, a focused and methodical professional in politics, has not derailed the vision of delivering social good to the greatest number of people. Shortly, after his inauguration as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on December 15, 2020, Abiru rolled out the social safety scheme for the vulnerable people impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the same zeal, he launched an ambitious Bursary Scheme for over 600 people who are indigenous to Lagos East in the Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions.

In less than six months in the saddle, Senator Abiru’s sponsored bill titled “The Copyright Act Repeal and Re-enactment Bill, 2021” which will replace the extant Copyright Act Cap C28 LFN 2004 was passed by the National Assembly.

Born on March 25 1964, Abiru, who is indigenous to Ikorodu, attended Ereko Methodist School, Moloney, Lagos (1969–1973), Government College, Lagos (1975-1981), Baptist Academy, Lagos (1981-1983) for advanced level studies and Lagos State University (LASU 1985–1988), graduating in economics.

The holder of a Bachelor of Science in Economics Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) is an alumnus of Harvard Business School and Lagos Business School Executive Education Programmes. He is happily married to Mrs Feyisola Abiru, CEO of H & Y Limited, an industrialist with a thriving furniture industry in Ikorodu.

Abiru’s sterling achievements in his first 21 months in office

A man in a hurry to lift his constituents from the abyss of poverty, Abiru, shortly after he was elected into the Senate, swung into action by spearheading interventions and partnerships that are critical to making life less burdensome for the people he represents.

One such important intervention is the Ikorodu/Sagamu Road, with his legislative intervention has led to the virement of the funding on the road to the Sukuk Financing Scheme, which has yielded positive results that are delighting the people of Lagos.

This particular has culminated in the progress of work from Eyita (around Sabo), down to the First Gate (LASPOTECH), Odogunyan, Ita-Oluwo, Ogijo, Gbaga and Likosi, as work progress has reached Gbara Village just eight kilometres to Sagamu.

That was not all. He also facilitated four blocks of 24 classrooms equipped with complements of furniture and 16 toilets and a solar-powered borehole at Aga Primary School, Ikorodu; just as two blocks of six classrooms were facilitated at RCM Primary School Iwerekun, Ibeju-Lekki; one block of three classrooms at Ajelogo Primary School, Agboyi-Ketu; one block of two classrooms with office/store furnishing and solar-power installation at UPE Primary School, Ajegende, Eredo; one block of two classrooms at Methodist Primary School, Oke-Eletu, Ijede Local Council Development Area (LCDA); one block of two classrooms at Araromi Primary School, Gbagada; one block of two classrooms at Aiyeroju Primary School, Oworo; motorised boreholes with power generating sets at Mojoda Market Eredo, Itoikin and Agbowa; two blocks of classrooms at Isheri Primary School, Ikosi Isheri LCDA; and an ICT Centre at the Igbobi Junior High School, Somolu Lagos.

Out of his undying love for the downtrodden, Abiru, since he won the Lagos East Senatorial District by-election on December 5, 2020, has awarded bursaries to 600 brilliant but indigent students across Lagos East Senatorial District.

He has also provided cash support for over 2,500 vulnerable people every month under the COVID-19 Relief Support Scheme, with over N130 million disbursed within 20 months; besides financial assistance to hundreds of constituents through liaison offices at Epe, Ibeju-Lekki, Somolu, Kosofe and Ikorodu.

The DoingGood Senator has also facilitated the construction of a 40-bed health facility and dental centre at the Ikorodu Campus of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH); 200 solar-powered street lights at LASPOTECH; 30-bed health facility at Mascara Health Centre in Agboyi-Ketu LCDA; 40-bed hospital at Isiu, Ikorodu North LCDA; a 960-spectator capacity mini-stadium with a two-pavilion sports facility, basketball and volleyball courts at Epe; reconstruction of the popular Oluwo Fish Market in Epe, which increased the numbers of shops from 259 to 319; comprising lock-up shops, open sheds and 48 toilets.

To boost small businesses and lift farming activities, especially food production in order to sustain the country’s food security drive, Abiru has provided hand planters to 200 rural farmers with N20,000 cash support. He also gave cash grants of N50,000 to 1,250 market women across the district and facilitated the supply and installation of transformers to 20 communities in the Lagos East Senatorial district; organise a business capacity workshop/clinic for 1,000 MSMEs across the senatorial district in partnership with the Fate Foundation and Standard Chartered Foundation.

He also facilitated SMEDAN trade grant to 200 MSMEs in the district; facilitated N300 million constituency intervention revolving loan at a six per cent per annum interest rate and in partnership with Nigerian Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), facilitated support for smallholder poultry farmers in Lagos East.

The Senator was also instrumental in the setting up of a community innovation space known as Senator Abiru Innovation Lab (SAIL) in partnership with the Co-creation Hub (Cc-HUB) to train youths in the senatorial district following Tech Talent Development, STEM, and Business 101 for Artisans and Creatives, Lagos East Teachers’ Fellowship, Start-up Accelerator.

An APC foot soldier fighting tooth and nail for his party

A firm believer in the impending victory of the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the re-election bid of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the forthcoming polls, Abiru has continued to work tirelessly in the length and breadth of Lagos to win souls for his leaders.

With the wholehearted way he has committed himself to the Tinubu/Sanwo-Olu project, many are saying it is hard to believe that the Senator is also seeking re-election. This, according to Enitan Olukotun, Special Adviser to Senator Abiru, is one of the hallmarks of the man’s personality and leadership philosophy: selflessness. Lagos needs more of #DoingGood leaders like Abiru!

Buhari chats INEC Chairman ahead of Saturday’s polls

head of Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections, President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, discussed with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The discussion was, according to President Buhari, at the instance of the Chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmoud Yakubu, explaining that it was all part of the efforts that the elections hold successfully.

The President hinted of the conversation while explaining his few minutes of lateness to the inauguration and handover of security equipment valued at over N12 billion to the military and Nigeria Police Force. According to him, he had been grounded by the electoral body for the five minutes he kept the CACOVID group waiting, reminding all that everything needed to be done for a successful election to be achieved. “I’m being grounded by INEC. You know next Saturday is a great day for us and I take instructions from INEC so that I make sure there’ll be no excuses for the successful election,” Buhari had told his guests.

IGP orders restriction of movement, reaffirms ban on VIP escorts

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba has ordered a restriction of all forms of vehicular movement on roads, waterways, and other forms of transportation from 12 am to 6 pm on election day with the exception of those on essential services such as INEC officials, electoral observers, ambulances responding to medical emergencies, firefighters, among others.

The order, which is part of measures emplaced to ensure a safe, secure, and conducive environment for the conduct of elections, is aimed at ensuring public order management, safety of electorate as well as assisting the security agencies in effective policing, thereby preventing hoodlums and criminally-minded elements from disrupting the electoral process. According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi: “Similarly, the IGP sternly warns all security aides and escorts to desist from accompanying their principals and politicians to polling booths and collation centres during the election as anyone found flouting this directive will be severely sanctioned.”

The IGP emphasised that only security personnel specifically assigned to election duties are to be seen within and around the designated election booths and centres. He also said the ban on unauthorized use of sirens, revolving lights, covered number plates, and tinted glasses is still in force, and violators would be sanctioned appropriately. The police boss said all state-established and owned security outfits/organisations, quasi-security units, and privately-owned guard and security outfits are also barred from participating in election security management.

While empathising with well-meaning citizens on the inconveniences the restriction may cause, the IGP urged all active electorates to be law-abiding and turn out en masse to exercise their franchise. He however warned that the force will deal decisively with any individual(s) or group(s) that might want to test our common resolve and might to ensure a peaceful election. It’s criminal to use phones at polling centres, INEC warns Ogun voters

INEC has warned voters against using mobile phones at the polling centres during the Saturday’s election, saying it is a criminal offence. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ogun state, Mr. Niyi Ijalaye, issued the warning yesterday at the Commission’s office at Magbon in Abeokuta while addressing newsmen after a meeting with heads of security agencies in respect of the Saturday election.

Ijalaye said voters would not be allowed to make phone calls or take pictures with phones while casting their votes, assuring of the preparedness of the INEC to conduct free, fair and credible poll. “We have been strategising and re-strategising on way forward to ensure that elections in Ogun state will be devoid of rancor or violence of any sort whatsoever. That is what we have been doing and we want to seize this opportunity to appeal to the good people of Ogun state, the gateway state to endeavour to just come out peacefully on Saturday and exercise their franchise, their civic responsibility to vote for people, candidates and parties of their choice.

“On no account will violence of any sort be tolerated in this state and that is what we have been discussing in the last two, three hours. Maybe I need to emphasise this also that on voting day, when people come to the polling booths with their phones, when they approach the polling officer and they want to go in with their phones, they will not be allowed to use their phones to discuss with people or take pictures at that polling point where they will be voting. It is an offence, it is a crime and it will not be allowed. We appeal to those people who wish to come there with their phones to maybe switch it off for that one or two minutes, so that everybody would be seen to be acting within the law.”

EFCC deploys officers for election monitoring

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday deployed its officers to the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory, to monitor Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections. It said this was part of efforts to ensure the integrity of the polls.

EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa urged the operatives to be conscious of the country’s interest and to exhibit a high sense of professionalism. He gave the charge, according to a statement by the anti-graft agency’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren. Bawa said: “You are out on a national assignment, and I expect you to conduct yourselves responsibly in line with our core values of professionalism, integrity and courage. You have a responsibility to ensure that this election is devoid of financial malpractices, especially inducement of voters. The attention of the world is focused on Nigeria and we must do what is necessary to ensure that we have credible, free and fair elections.”

The EFCC also said it had released incidents reporting hotlines for the 36 states and the FCT. The commission urged members of the public to report any case of vote buying or selling or other evidence of financial malpractices designed to compromise the electoral outcome through the hotlines. “Members of the public can also report anyone trying to buy or sell votes by making use of the EFCC financial crimes reporting App, Eagle Eye, which is available for download on the Google Play or Apple store. Additionally, the public can reach the Commission through our social media handle, @officialefcc or by email, info@efcc.gov.ng.  The hotlines and Eagle Eye App flyers are attached to this statement.”

INEC begins distribution of ballots papers, result sheets in Osun

Ahead of February 25th 2023 presidential election, INEC has commenced distribution of sensitive materials, including ballot papers and result sheets to Local Government Areas across the state.    The electoral umpire arrived the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) headquarters in Osogbo yesterday around 9:15AM in company of chairmen of political parties and journalists. However, journalists were barred from entering the premises of CBN to inspect the collection process which led to protest of Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Mutiu Agboke.

Agboke faulted CBN leadership led by State Director, Mrs Oluyemi Adeyemi, who said she received directive from the headquarters that political parties’ chairmen and journalists should not be allowed inside the premises. After the REC insistence, political parties’ chairmen and journalists were allowed inside the premises to witness the collection exercise. Speaking in the premises of CBN after the collection, Agboke disclosed that the commission will commence dispatching of the sensitive materials to all local government areas of state.

“Our sensitive materials, particularly, ballot papers, result sheets are usually in the custody of the Central Bank of Nigeria. We are ready for the election. We are here to start batching of our material for onward transmission to these local government areas. What you have seen on (the) ground are the ballot papers, result sheet for the presidential, senatorial and House of Representatives election.

“We will arrange and batch them to various local government areas. All these are indications that the Commission is ready. The Commission is in touch with our security agents. The synergy is there. All our local government offices are well secured.”

INEC has commenced the distribution of sensitive materials to local councils in Lagos, in readiness for the Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections. The exercise is currently being carried out under the heavy presence of security agencies at the CBN headquarters, Marina, Lagos.

The deployment is also being carried out in the presence of journalists, observers — local and international, and party officials.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Olusegun Agbaje, while speaking to reporters, explained that the electoral officers would take the items to their councils where they would be sent to the polling units on Saturday morning. “Party agents, international observers, security agencies are all on ground to witness the distribution process. You can see the synergy here. The DSS is also here. The commissioner of police has been here since 10:00am. We are loading the trucks that will go to various local governments.”
