  • Popular movie producer seeks Ogun Assembly seat

    •Offers free market for masses

Popular drama evangelist, Kolade Segun Okeowo (KSO), has declared intention to contest for a seat in the Ogun State House of Assembly.

Okeowo, who is also a movie producer, is vying for Sagamu Constituency 2 seat.

He declared the intention at an open free market empowerment programme in collaboration with Treasures Empowerment Network (TED) in Mowe, Ogun State.

No fewer than 700 people participated in the scheme where they got items ranging from clothes, shoes to foodstuff for free.

Okeowo said the gesture was borne out of the desire to give the less privileged a sense of belonging in view of the economic hardship in the land.

He said he was going into politics to make a difference and not to enrich himself.

“I will not borrow money. I won’t sell my properties because of politics. If I do that, I won’t be able to fulfill my promises when I get into office,” Okeowo stressed.

He promised to always work for the masses and give back to the community with or without politics.

He added that charity has always been a part of him since he started evangelising.

Four indigent students were also offered full scholarship from primary to secondary level courtesy of KSO Friends and Initiatives.

Coordinator of the group, Barrister Segun Olonade, praised Okeowo for his charitable heart and stressed he was seeking the Assembly seat to serve the people and nothing more.

  • 2019: Akwa Ibom Christians back Emmanuel for reelection

Thousands of believers under the aegis of Akwa Ibom Christian Assembly at the weekend threw their weight behind the reelection bid of Governor Udom Emmanuel.

The governor, they said, has done creditably well and should carry on with his industrial revolution in the state.

They spoke after a two-day conference tagged Dominion Mandate with the theme “One body, one voice”.

It was put together by Akwa Ibom Christian Assembly and Fathers of Faith.

Some of the prominent church leaders at the meeting were: Dr Uma Ukpai, Prelate Emeritus Sunday Mbang, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Akwa Ibom chapter, Reverend Ndueso Ekwere, Rev Ntia Ntia, Archbishop Emma Isong and Apostle Zilley Aggrey, among others.

They all unequivocally said Emmanuel had done well and should continue the good works.

Arrowhead of the organisers, Archbishop Cletus Bassey, explained why the church and Christian community were supporting Emmanuel for reelection.

According to him: “Today, in Akwa Ibom State, we must take the tide when it serves. If we fail to take the current, we stand to lose our ventures.

“We stand to lose all the good works and sterling achievements of this transformational administration. But the Church has seen the glory of the coming of the Lord in this administration.”

He said the church was involved in politics because “our members pay taxes and every tax payer pays tax in the hope of good governance.

“The Church is involved because we are commanded to watch and pray and faith without works is dead. The Church is involved because when evil reigns, it burns churches not casinos and nightclubs.

“The Church is involved because the promise of Akwa Ibom is the legacy of our fathers, the hope of this generation and the treasure of our posterity.

“We are involved because we are the foot soldiers of our fathers of faith, who have aligned with the popular saying that “All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing”.

He said the governor has played politics with the fear of God “which has culminated in the peace and steady progress we continue to enjoy in Akwa Ibom state.

“You have been a worthy ambassador of the Church by promoting and exhibiting strong Christian values, ethics and sound moral principles in public office.

“The Church, therefore, cannot remain silent in publicly supporting your second term bid as Governor to continue the good works you have started.”

Emmanuel appreciated the Christian leaders for the resounding endorsement.

The governor said:  ”I want to thank you for this wonderful endorsement  and I pledge to you today that I will continue to work for the advancement of our people, to run a Christ -centric government, to show compassion to the poor, the infirmed and the downtrodden while creating the atmosphere for all to strive and dare.”

  • Adeboye’s wife charges youths on faithfulness to God

Wife of the General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Mrs. Folu Adeboye, has charged Christian youths to remain faithful to the Lord by shunning sins and all forms of unrighteousness no matter the challenges around them.

She spoke at the 2018 Redeemer’s Day celebration organised by Christ The Redeemer’s School Management (CRSM) of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) at the Redemption Camp, Ogun State.

The two- day event tagged victorious generation held in all regions of the church, featuring school parade, talks on Christian adornment, talent discovery and display exhortation, arts and science exhibition, sporting event and football competition.

She said that every generation has its own challenges and experiences urging them to conquer the ones associated with their time.

“Jesus has won the victory for us on the cross. We must not settle for failure or unrighteousness. We must be a generation of peace, fruitfulness, holiness, diligence and greater works,” she said.

Rather than joining agents of evils, she challenged youths to must resist them with full force.

Adeboye, who is also the Vice President Education of RCCG and Chairperson of Christ The Redeemer’s School Management charged: “We must do away with fear and not surrender to evil. As we confront the evils in the land to overcome them, your protection is assured”.

She asserted that no matter what the world is saying, we must not yield to temptation,  but resist it and keep our eyes gazed on Jesus at all times

“To enjoy our victory, we must not allow anything to disconnect us from him. They devils major work is to disconnect us from our source but we must not give him a chance,” she said

Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Yetunde Onanuga, charged parents to be alive to their responsibility of inculcating the right moral attitude and ethnics in their children for sure footing to weather academic rigors.

Onanuga, who was represented by her Senior Special Assistant, Mrs. Abiodun Oyedele, argued that qualitative education is synergy of effort among the government, the parents and the private sector.

  • Kingdom advancement prayer: Every believer’s responsibility!

Welcome to another exciting week. I hope you were blessed through last week’s teaching. Also, I believe you have discovered that you can provoke favour through Kingdom advancement endeavours. Today, we shall focus on Kingdom Advancement Prayer: Every Believer’s Responsibility!

From scriptures, we discover that Kingdom advancement prayer is a commandment. As it is written: After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:9-10).Also, we must understand that the prayer altar is the sharpest of all sickles of harvest with capacity to birth a nation at once. The Bible records: Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child. Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children (Isaiah 66:7-8).Furthermore, we saw how on mount Carmel, the whole of Israel exclaimed:The LORD, he [is] the God; the LORD, he [is] the God through the prayer ministry of Elijah (1 Kings 18:39; James 5:17).The is how a whole nation bowed to the effectual fervent prayer of a man. Also, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, the king passed a decree. As it is written: Therefore I make a decree, That every people, nation, and language, which speak any thing amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill: because there is no other God that can deliver after this sort. Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, in the province of Babylon (Daniel 3:29-30; see also Daniel 6:10). We also saw that the Apostles were constantly in prayers, they also responded to the threats of the people with prayers. The Bible records: And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word (Acts 4:29). We saw them gathered together in Solomon’s porch praying (Acts 5:12/14, Acts 6:4/7). So, Kingdom advancement prayers will keep on advancing the engaging believer until He sets us above all nations of the earth.

It is also important to know that the multitudes drawn into the Kingdom by prayer will always require prayer to be established in the faith. As it is written: Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God (Colossians 4:12; see also Galatians 4:19).So, prayer will bring them in, prayer will also keep them established.

Moreover, we discovered from the testimony of the Apostles that nothing establishes a believer in the faith like Word encounters and for the Word to keep flowing, we have to keep praying. For it is written: Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you (2 Thessalonians 3:1; see also John 6:68).Thus, prayer is what releases the Word and the Word is what establishes the saints (Ephesians 6:18). Furthermore, church growth will require prayer forever; the church cannot keep growing until the saints keep praying. So, we can only keep the church growing by praying. Remember, it is not the length of our prayer but the fervency of engagement.

But, what is in Praying Kingdom Advancement Prayer for us?

    • Supernatural Favour: As it is written: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33).When anything is added to our lives without asking, it is called favour. The Bible says: Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come. For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof. So the heathen shall fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth thy glory (Psalm 102:13-15).Please, understand that nothing flies like favour!
    • Supernatural Change of Levels/Status: We saw Nehemiah engaged in Kingdom welfare prayer when he heard about the trouble the people were going through in Jerusalem. He fasted many days (Nehemiah 1:1-11) and suddenly, from a Cup Bearer; he became a Governor. The Bible records: Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor (Nehemiah 5:14).
    • Wiping Away of Shame and Reproach: If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will [my] Father honour (John 12:26). When God honours a man, no devil can dishonour him. For it is written: In the multitude of people is the king’s honour: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince (Proverbs 14:28; see also1 Samuel 2:30).

In conclusion, to be a full partaker of these blessings of stewardship, Kingdom advancement prayer must be our priority and lifestyle. But, we cannot do that if we are not born again. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

  • ‘Why Nigeria needs a national day of praise’

The Osile Oke Ona, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, spoke with reporters recently on his life and ministry. Sunday Oguntola was there. Excerpts:

What is your view on the clamour for restructuring?

There is nothing wrong with calls for restructuring. However, we need to get our spiritual foundation right. Although I agree that we may need to call a conference to address all those issues that are leading to agitations here and there but in discussing them we have to start everything with God.

The Bible says a house built on the rock will endure whereas the one built on sand will collapse when there is a storm. A house built on sand refers to us human beings – human beings.

We are dust but God is the rock and that’s why anything that you do with God that will always endure whereas any venture undertaken with human wisdom are never reliable. We must put God first in whatever we are doing.

How do you want us to go about it?

It should take the form of worship and thanksgiving. For anything we want to do, we should first of all appreciate God through thanksgiving. I have advised the President should call all Nigerians out irrespective of religions to call us out for a day of thanksgiving and praising God. On that day we would do nothing but praise God, dancing singing and appreciating God

If we can repent, God will heal us and heal our land. But God wants us to repent first and if we can organize a day of thanksgiving and praises, it will go a long way in appeasing God. Thank God President Muhammadu Buhari is trying his best but he alone can’t do it. He and his cabinet can’t do it alone. We all have to invite God to intervene through our thanksgiving and praises.

But some people have asked how does Kabiyesi reconcile being an evangelist with also being a polygamist?

These three women with me who are my wives I had them before I became king. As at that time, I was not born-again. I became born-again in 1992. The three of them as at 1992 had bore children for me.

So if I have accepted Christ into my life and said I want to be a monogamist and insisted   that they should go away, what about the children? Am I showing them love that way?

The Bible says whosoever sent his wife away will make such a woman to commit adultery and that would amount to sin before God and I would be held responsible for that.

The most important thing is if you are a polygamist before accepting Christ, the key thing is that you must make sure you don’t marry more wives because you have given your life to Christ.

Then, secondly you have admitted Christ into your life. The three wives should also admit Christ into their lives and which they have done in my case. I don’t believe there is any problem. I go to crusades with my three wives. We evangelise and preach Christ together.

My three wives, children and I are all immersed in Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is in us and we are all in Christ. We are not leading our lives again but leading the lives of Jesus Christ. We have all become members of Jesus family. We are now a family fortified by Jesus Christ.

You organise the annul Kings Day of Praise. What is it all about?

The Kings Day of Praise is a day set aside for kings to meet and worship God. It usually take place second Thursday of October every year after independence celebrations just to thank God.

Although we call it Kings day of Praise but if you are a believer in Christ and Christ has made you a king and a priest you are welcome to the programme.

God created us for just one purpose. That’s to worship him, to praise him and thank Him for all he has done in our lives and that’s the essence of life. That’s what we will do when we get to heaven and by the grace of God we will make it to heaven.

We will do nothing there else but worship God 24 hours of the day. We will join the 24 elders who put their crowns aside worshipping God saying Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord 24 hours of the day.

That’s the essence of our being here and that’s what we will continue to do till eternity. So that’s the essence of Kings Day of Praise.

Talking about the inspiration, how did the inspiration come about?

It is very interesting talking about how it started. I just received a letter here in the palace and the letter stated that God was looking for a king who will gather other kings together to praise God. I got this letter but it was a mysterious letter because I didn’t know where the letter emanated from. I don’t know the origin or source of the letter.

That was 15 years ago. I can’t even remember how the letter was delivered to my palace but the funny thing is that soon after I started the programme, I couldn’t find the letter again.

But in the letter, it was stated that God will bless the king who comply and start the Kings Day of Praise programme.

Coincidentally, during one of those occasions when we were having my yearly coronation anniversaries, suddenly while making my speech, Ebenezer Obey just walked in and this is a man who has been doing praise altar programme with me for the past few years and my spirit just told me, wait a minute, what am I delaying this Kings Day of Praise programme for since Obey is here?

I told the audience about the letter I received concerning the Kings Day of Praise and how God said He would bless whosoever starts the programme. That was in May 2004. Believe it or not by October 2004 we held the first edition of Kings Day of Praise and since then we have been holding the programme every year.

I give all the praises and glory to God for the programme because it is only God that can sustain that kind of a programme for that long.

How does a typical day look like while holding Kings Day of Praise?

It is a day set aside for praising God 24 hours of the day. The day is devoted to thanking God for what He has been doing in our lives.

The best approach to get to God’s heart or seek His face for favour is to praise God. Psalm 100:4 says enter into God’s gate with thanksgiving, enter His court with praise. That’s the key to get into the kingdom of God and to request for whatever you want from God.

Psalm 22:3 says that God inhabits the praises of Israel, the praises of His people.

Once you can praise, God will always listen to you. King David told us He usually prayed three times in a day but he praises God seven times a day. No wonder He was so successful. All you need to do is just to praise God.

Let me give you an example how praises work like a miracle. When you go to a function where a notable musician like Ebenezer Obey is playing, Ebenezer Obey would not be praying to you that you should bring money.

What Obey would just do is to start praising you until your head swells and you now put your hand in your pocket and you start spraying him currency notes.

That’s the same thing with God. When you praise God, when you acknowledge his goodness in your life, then doors of blessings will be opened for you.

  • Cleric seeks unity among gospel ministers

Apostle Sodiq Moses of the Christ Holy Mountain has called for unity among all Christian leaders for national recovery.

He spoke at the church premises in Ikotun, Lagos State.

According to him, until Nigeria comes together in the spirit of unity and love, corruption, pain, envy and suffering would continue.

“The devil that is disturbing us as a nation is organised. We Christians have to come together for the spirit of unity to return to the church and then there will be national recovery.

“Christian leaders have to come together to chase the devil out of Nigeria and out of the world. God has sent me here to safe souls.

“The nation is in bondage because we are not together and it is until we come together that we will be able to achieve what God has ordained us to achieve.”

He added: “God is calling on all the men of God to come together in the spirit of unity and love.

“If there is no love, Nigeria cannot have breakthrough. It is heart breaking to see men of God fighting on the pages of the newspaper or other media platforms.

“This is happening because the devil has taken away the spirit of unity from us.”

He said a unity crusade will hold in last Friday of July in Lagos to reunite church leaders.

  • Boys Brigade pleads for return of statutory grants

The President of Boys Brigade Lagos State Council, Arc Olusegun Ladega, has appealed to government to restore grants to the body and other voluntary organisation for more effectiveness in ministering to boys and young persons.

Ladega spoke ahead of his investiture as the 7th President of the council and other state office Bearers today at St Paul Breadfruit Victoria Island, Lagos.

According to him, Boys brigade has over 400 church- based companies and outreaches in 2, 000 schools through the voluntary agencies in schools initiative of the Lagos state government.

He noted that since 2005, the brigade has not received its statutory grant from the state government.

He said: “It is our dream to carry further the development of the Boys Brigade land at Igbo Okuta, Ikorodu into a world class life, leadership, skills and vocational learning delivery centre.”

He explained the centre will be a serene suburban environment, a sanctuary for spiritual, physical and mental renewal.

He called for restructuring of the education system to provide a combination of academic knowledge, vocational and life skills instruction as well as moral and citizenship training.

Ladega pointed out in the last 110 years of existence, the Boys Brigade in Nigeria has contributed to the building of future leaders in Nigeria through its structured progress of Christian character training.

  • Kings and, The King of kings

In universal term, a King is someone who has manifested mastery in a particular discipline and not necessarily restricted to custodians of the traditional institutions. That explains the reason for King of Juju, Apala, Fuji Music among a host of others. Having established that, it needs be said that the differences between earthly kings and The heavenly King are extremely wide. While the former have restricted jurisdiction, curtailed influence and limited knowledge, the latter is unlimited – He is Omnipotent, Omnipresent and Omniscient. It is therefore incongruous and of no dependable value for anyone to assume that earthly kings play the role of God in any of life’s issues. Like the motto of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, “we care but God heals”. Earthly kings can talk, brag and try to convince without action but real performance is the exclusive right of The King of kings.

One of the greatest weapons of warfare that has been since biblical times to date is the withdrawal of support by privileged nations to any nation they desire to bring to their knees. From the passage of our text, Benhadad, the King of Syria and his host employed this same tactic against Israel. Benhadad sent his armies to the boundaries of Samaria such that food supplies, clothing and other utilities were debarred from reaching them – the city was besieged! Before long, demand became more than supply hence famine became imminent. The survival instinct of human beings therefore came to the fore as two women resorted to internal arrangement of eating their children one after another. In line with their agreement, one of the women surrendered her son as a meal but when it was the turn of the other woman she reneged on the terms of their agreement – she hid her son!

The woman became so traumatized as the problem was beyond her control hence she went to the king.  Often times, we also run headlong into such disappointments and abuse of agreements and in a bid to get out of the melee, we assume that ‘a mad man may be a mechanic’. It is in that circumstance that we run to human beings that we opine can help us – maybe our bankers or benefactors when it is tied to finances, Doctors when it borders on health issues, a Pastor when it has to do with spiritual matters, a superior officer to solve employment issues or a king when it comes to influencing others within a restricted geographical enclave. It was this situation that compelled the distraught woman to solicit the assistance of the King of Israel who was very honest to express his limitation as an earthly king and confessed that the Almighty God is the only King with unlimited capacity.

A man of God once said that the result you have is dependent on the person you are running to for assistance. No one can ever go beyond the level of their helper. If you run to a local chief for help, the best you can get from him is a local attention and if privileged can be conferred with a local chieftaincy title. If the person helping you is a local government Chairman, his influence is restricted to his local area. Anyone who cries to a Governor for help is constricted to a section of the national map. In fact, if the person rendering assistance is the President of a nation, the beneficiaries are more often bounded to that national horizon and not the continent. However, if it is the Almighty God you run to, He is indefinite in geographical compass, fathomless in occupational dimension and immeasurable in connection – in fact, the entire world belongs to Him. “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist” ( Colossians 1:16-17).

Given that earthly kings may be able to influence their wives and children, same cannot be said of people outside the ambit of their direct influence but the Almighty God has control over the heart of men and has power to turn it wherever He wills (cf Esther 5:1-4). It is by Him that “…kings reign, and princes decree justice. By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth” (Proverbs 8:15-16). The Unlimited God, and not any earthly being, is the One with capacity to make a way where there is logically no road. He manifested this power in Exodus 14 when the army of Pharaoh pursued the Israelites knowing fully well that the path they took was a dead end, the Almighty God destroyed the barrier, opened the Red Sea and made an expressway for His children to pass – He made a way, where there was no way. He is a man of war (Exodus 15:3 cf Isaiah 43:19). When He decides to fight on behalf of His children, He defies conventional methods of warfare. He can open the heaven to release bombs on aggressors (Joshua 10:11), He can release fire from heaven on powers sent to arrest His child(ren) (2Kings 1:9-12), He can open the ground to consume accusers (Numbers 16:23-33) etc.

Brethren, the only one that you ought to put your trust in is the Almighty God and not any earthly king. He is the One that will never leave you nor forsake you as He has “…..graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me” (Isaiah 49:16). It is foolhardy and at the end disappointing to put one’s trust in man and turn attention away from the Almighty God. King Asa of Israel “….in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians (2 Chronicles 16:12).

Jesus Christ wants you to “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). The Psalmist said in Psalms 55:22 that “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved”. When you come to Him, He will in no wise cast you out, He will accept you as one of His children and attend to the issues of your life.

Prayer: Almighty God, you are the only help for the helpless, give me grace to trust only you and not repose my confidence in earthly vessels, in Jesus’ name.

  • ‘Churches, Christians faring better in Borno State’

‘Churches, Christians faring better in Borno State’

Borno State chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Rev. Jonah Freeson, retired from the Nigeria Police Force as a counterterrorism expert.  The General Overseer of Christ Shepherd House Maiduguri spoke with journalists in Maiduguri on how Boko Haram insurgency has affected churches in the State as well as response of the government. Duku Joel was there. Excerpts:

Having been in Borno for quite some time and seen the carnage. In what ways are churches affected?

When the crisis began in 2009, Boko Haram attacks were targeted at Christians but as time went by, the insurgents expanded the attacks generally to Christians and Muslims.

The insurgency has adversely affected the people of Borno Stat,e particularly the Christendom. There have been so many houses burnt down without compensation. There were shops and private enterprises that have been devastated.

So many people have been killed with others rendered homeless, jobless and many also were forcefully rendered orphans, unaccompanied children and widows. But God is helping us by His Grace we are forging ahead.

What has been the response of the State Government, especially to the Christian community which is in minority?

To be specific from 2009 there has been no compensation to any Christian based on my understanding but we are most grateful to Governor Kashim Shettima who inherited the crisis from his predecessor in 2011.

Let us put politics aside, we have never had any governor in Muslim majority Borno state building burnt churches until the coming of Governor Shettima.

The governor, based on my understanding and the realities on ground, has tried in that aspect. May be government is doing its rebuilding process in phases because as it is the National Evangelical, the EYN (Church of Brethren), the Catholic Churches and the rest of them in Maiduguri metropolis were affected by the crisis in previous years and I have not heard anything about intervention.

However based on the briefings of the chairman Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Borno Chapter, Bishop Mohammed Naga, which I have been privileged to know, Governor Shettima has approved and released money for the rebuilding of most of the burnt churches in Hawul, Askira-Uba and Chibok Local Government Areas that are predominantly Christian communities.

Also, it would interest you to know that when Bishop of Anglican Communion of Nigeria, Maiduguri Diocese, Most Rev. Emmanuel Kana Mani (of Blessed Memory), died in February last year as a result of brief illness, Governor Shettima gave the sum of N10 million cash to the bereaved family.

He also pledged to give a befitting accommodation to the family in one of the estates built by his administration. This is a departure from experiences of Christians under previous administrations.

In fact, under previous administration, some of our pastors were killed by terrorists and nothing was done to appease their families left behind, not to talk of those who died naturally like Kana Mani.

How do you react to the position of some Nigerians who believe government should have no involvement with places of worship since religion is a personal issue?

Who told you government is not supposed to be involved in religious matters? Churches and Mosques are public buildings because they are places where citizens who are the public converge. Church or Mosque is a public building. Moreover, we are talking about rebuilding. These places were destroyed.

If government has the resources, it should assist in rebuilding places of worship destroyed. It is a right step. Citizens have rights to worship. Given the crisis, people don’t have the resources as their economies have been destroyed.

Their homes have been destroyed and they don’t have anywhere to live and worship, and so, it is good thing Governor Kashim Shettima is doing as part of government rebuilding processes.

Apart from rebuilding churches, in what other ways can you score the relationship between the State and the Christian community?

I know that since Governor Shettima came on board, he has been sponsoring many Christians on annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem. This gives Christians a sense of belonging the way Muslims are sponsored for Hajj. This sense of fairness enhances coexistence, builds love and inter-faith trust which contributes to peace in any society.

This helps because for example Islamic scholars and traditional rulers in my area are very wonderful. We have been living as members of the same family. We are very cordial with them. Anything I want to do, I will and inform them. Also, anything the Bulamas (Village Heads) or the Imams want to do, they will come to me and inform me.

Citizens of different faith will only work together when their leader doesn’t take side against one religion in a manner that shows clear injustice. What I think is most important about Shettima is that is a leader that listens and this is very important to us.

Anytime we call on him, he gives us listening ears on all issues. I am happy to inform you that this governor and his administration have not neglected the Christian community like previous Governors did.

Governor Shettima is the best Borno has ever had in terms of relating with Christians. And this is what I can say because I don’t know other aspects of his personal life. But in relating with Christians, the man is excellent from day one.

During former governor Ali Modu Sheriff led-government, the man did not relate with Christians. And that was why he refused to rebuild or compensate any church burnt down in 2006.

He feels Christians don’t have good numbers in elections in Borno State. But it will interest you to know Shettima’s body language is more about building peace. He has been very careful as an educated and refined leader.

These are what I can say about the governor and his concern about the Christians in the state. This relationship can be sustained if the Christians would also pray for the governor to succeed.

Although his tenure is coming to an end next year, we still have long way to go because, it is through collective prayers from all and sundry that government can succeed. The governor also has a role to play in sustaining this relationship if he doesn’t fall for any biased influence.

Were you here during Sheriff’s tenure because it appears you are confident of what transpired then?

Yes, I was around and also a living witness to what transpired against the Christian Community under Ali Modu Sheriff.

What is the situation of interfaith in the wider Borno society outside government?

Recently, the military in Borno State called a meeting with Muslim and Christian leaders where we interacted with them for about three to four times on how we will work collectively for the peace and development of the state.

We have discussed extensively on issues related to how we will continue to relate and pray together so that God will hear us and answer our prayers at the same time. So, I can testify that what we are doing together in Maiduguri, if can be extended to other states of the federation, it will take us a long way and Nigeria can be a great nation.

The religious crisis in some parts of the Northern Nigeria is caused by selfish people. These people are fanatics sponsoring jobless and heartless people to achieve their selfish interests. These are people who do not respect humanity.

And this situation can be curtailed if our leaders educate them, provide them with jobs and incentives to make them engaged. It is unfortunate that any destruction we are doing now in the name of religion will definitely tell on our children-children.
