  • As debate on tithing heats up

As debate on tithing heats up

Church leaders have reacted to the positions of the Senior Pastor of Daystar Christian Centre Lagos, Pastor Sam Adeyemi, on the raging tithing debate.

Adeyemi last Sunday shocked many when he waded into the tithing debate sparked by radio On Air Personality Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Daddy Freeze.

Daddy Freeze for close to a year has been condemning church leaders for promoting tithing, saying it was an avenue to enrich themselves at the expense of poor members.

He accused many church leaders of feeding fat on tithes, saying tithing is not as fundamental to the Christian faith as most preachers want members to believe.

The social media has been awash with many Christians for and against payment of tithes, an age-long tradition of the church that requires committed members to give a minimum of ten percent of their incomes for operational costs as well as welfare of the vulnerable.

Initially shocked by the mass discontents over administration of tithes, several church leaders waded into the controversy, largely dismissing Daddy Freeze as an anti-church agent bent on setting Christians against their heads.

Though many of them told their members to ignore the radio presenter, the debate has refused to die down with many Christians canvassing divergent views of the matter.

Adeyemi, a largely reserved and cautious Pentecostal preacher with large followership among urbane, upwardly mobile Christians, finally broke his silence on the controversy during the final lap of the church’s one-month teachings on giving.

He said: “I have been following the tithe debate. I discovered that it has been an age-long debate and it will be on for a long time. My first observation is that church people are behaving as if we own the word ‘tithe’.

“We don’t own the word. It is an English word. I want to say clearly that tithe as practiced under the laws of Moses has expired. The death and resurrection of Jesus has put paid to it.  It has expired.

“All the requirements of the law were satisfied under Christ. It is a gamble to say Jesus never paid tithe. The fact that it was not written that Jesus paid tithe does not mean he did not do it.

“I can also claim that Jesus did not go to the toilet because it is not written. 18 years of his life were not recorded in the Bible. When he was born his parents satisfied the requirements of the law. John 21 verse 25 says there are many things he did that were not recorded. Jesus did not say it was wrong to pay tithe in his day.”

The host of Success Power radio talk went on: “No Christian should feel guilty for not paying tithe. There is nothing you can add to what Jesus did to be qualified before God. When Jesus said ‘it is finished’, it was finished.

“Galatians 3 verse 13 says Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law. A Christian is not cursed because he or she did not pay tithe.

“A Christian should not give out of fear. A Christian should give out of love. We are free from guilt, from fear. We are in a dispensation of grace.”

Aside from stating that tithing has become expired as an essential, Adeyemi further stirred the hornet’s nest when he declared Christians are at liberty to determine whatever they want to give God, as against sticking to the ten percent-threshold.

He explained: “You are free to decide what to give. But if you sow sparingly you will reap sparingly. Tithing as practiced under the law has expired but tithing as a general principle cannot expire.

“A Christian is free to give any percentage of his money. But just bear in mind that 10 percent is still part of the number. If somebody chooses to give 10 percent he should not be condemned and if he gives less or more than that he has a right to decide on what to do.

“We should give to the poor because giving to the poor is giving to God. If we love God we should give to men.

“We should also be responsible citizens by paying our tax. We should give to our parents and be a blessing to them. We should give towards the work of God and we should give to servants of God and we should give to our immediate family and take care of them.”

The Senior Pastor of Living Waters Unlimited, Rev Ladi Thompson, said tithing is not and cannot be outdated. He said the subject matter is a scriptural dynamic that only regenerated minds can understand.

“Tithing is a scriptural dynamic not meant for the carnal minds. It is a scriptural principle that came before the law. Abraham was the first man to pay tithe to Melchizedek even when there were no laws.

“There is nothing we want to say to someone who has not activated the mind of Christ on tithing. So, for me, the first thing is for people to read Proverbs 26: 4-5 first. Then, we can explain tithing to them. It can only be taught to someone who has the mind of Christ.”

The Senior Pastor of Jesus Liberation Squad Lagos, Apostle Dele Johnson, agreed the Mosaic laws on tithing have expired but not its purpose.

“The bible is so clear about tithing. The New Testament is the confirmation of the Old Testament. In the New Testament, what we give is more than tithe and it is voluntary.

“The purpose of tithing is to worship God, which has not stopped. The purpose of tithing has not expired because it is voluntary as a form of worship.”

Johnson, who is the convener of Pastors Leaders Interceding Network (PLIN), also disagreed that a Christian can choose to pay more or less tithe as canvassed by Adeyemi.

He declared: “If it can be less or more than ten percent, what is that based on? What scripture backs that up? The scripture supports us to give more but not less. You cannot give less than the grace of God on your life.

“We shouldn’t give people opportunity to mess up but straighten up. Jesus never said or did anything that negated tithing. There is no curse attached to not paying tithe but there is a blessing attached to paying it.”

The Senior Pastor of Shepherdhill Baptist Church Obanikoro Lagos, Rev Israel Kristilere, disagreed that the law of tithing has expired. According to him, the laws of God are eternal with no timeline for compliance.

He said: “Does it mean the laws of do not kill or commit adultery have also expired? If those ones have not expired, what should only the law of tithing expire?”

He pointed out that Jesus never condemned the practice of tithing, saying “the only thing He said was when the Pharisees boasted of paying tithes without pursuing justice and fairness. Jesus said they should have paid tithes without also ignoring the other laws of God.”

Kristilere also frowned at the idea that Christians could pay less than ten percent. According to him: “The tithe is the minimum one can offer. God gave the minimum in the Old Testament but in the New Testament, it could be more. It cannot be less. If you are giving less than your minimum, you are a failure.”

The Senior Pastor of Livingspring Chapel, Pastor Femi Emmanuel, is also of the conviction that the law of tithing still subsists. “I don’t believe the law of tithing has expired although it is an Old Testament law.

“Jesus didn’t condemn tithing but said the Pharisees should have done it along with others. I believe anybody attacking tithe is attacking the church and the blessings of Christians practising it.”

The ten percent that Christians pay, he said, is only the smallest. “It is the smallest anybody can give God. God gave us all and there is nothing we give Him that is ever enough,” Femi-Emmanuel stated.

  • 2019: Ashimolowo, Ezekwesili, others push for strategic engagement

2019: Ashimolowo, Ezekwesili, others push for strategic engagement

Churches and Christians must devise ways of strategic engagement in politics and governance for the redemption of the nation.

This was the consensus at a leadership panel with the theme the role of Christians in politics and the role of women in politics by Pastors and Leaders Network.

The conference was hosted by Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church, Taiwo Odukoya, to sensitise the church on the importance of political participation for good governance.

At the panel coordinated by Chairperson of First Bank Nigeria Plc, Ibukun Awosika, speaker after speaker lamented the apathetic disposition of Christians to politics and governance.

This, they said, was responsible for the gross absence of good governance that would have engendered developmental strides across the nation.

The founder of Kingsway International Christian Church United Kingdom, Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo, bemoaned the lack of political agenda by the church.

This, he said, makes the church reactionary instead of innovative politically.

To change the tide, Ashimolowo called on the church to have a 20-year political plan that comprehensively explains the agenda and how to achieve it.

The plan, he said, must be followed through right from the level of the small groups with a training school for emerging Christian politicians.

According to him: “The church is so badly educated on politics that it only reacts instead of invent. We need a political training school like the kind Daniel and the three Hebrew boys attended in ancient Babylon for emerging leaders.”

The plan, he added, must also have achievable strategies for funding so that a powerful political base can evolve for national transformation.

Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, lamented that the church has been left behind in the affairs of the nation.

“Expecting that quality leadership will just emerge is foolish. We need to build a base for emerging leaders,” she stated.

Declaring that leadership is gender-neutral, Ezekwesili said nations that allow women to be involved in political leadership have been found to be more prosperous economically than their counterparts that bar women.

Rwanda, according to her, has the highest women politicians at 63.1 percent while Nigeria boasts of a paltry six percent, a development she pointed out reflects in the development indices of both nations.

She called on women not to allow themselves to be silenced in political processes, lamenting many Christian women with capacity have sadly kept quiet.

Political activist, Adebola Williams, stated that the church must invest massively in technology and media to engineer political changes.

He pointed out that political leaders have conspired to put the masses on survival mode so that they can show zero-interest in governance.

To change the narratives, he said churches must embrace media and technological inventions to empower people for political participation.

Founder of Rise Networks, Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, bemoaned that the church has been sold on the lie that it must be apolitical.

“Politics,” according to her, “is the business of the church and everyone. If you think you are not affected, think of the taxes slammed on your business and the untarred roads that lead to avoidable accidents and deaths.”

  • God will destroy oppressors of Nigeria, says cleric

God will destroy oppressors of Nigeria, says cleric

There is no hiding place for oppressors of the nation because God will destroy them all, General Overseer of The Saint’s Gospel Church of Christ (also known as Hand of Fire Ministries), Pastor Jacob Shodeinde, has declared.

Renewing hope in Nigerians with the message that judgment of God was imminent on those disturbing the peace of the country, the cleric said that God as the defender of the defenceless will rise for the people.

Shodeinde spoke during the annual celebration of his call into the vineyard of God at the church auditorium in Ikotun-Igando Lagos.

According to him, the Lord will destroy the powers oppressing the country and making life meaningless for its people.

Recalling how his journey began, the cleric said he was studying engineering overseas when God called him into full-time ministry.

Though he initially declined, he said the fear of dying if he refused to heed the call forced him to abandon his studies and return home.

He said: “I was studying in England but the Lord called me to return to Nigeria to pray for its deliverance.

“I was reluctant at first, but God said if I failed to heed, I would die. Everything the Lord revealed to me was also revealed to Sister Olaniran for confirmation and when I met her, she prophesied everything the Lord had shown me.

“And since I returned, there have been signs and wonders. I have not regretted the call since I answered it. And when I hear testimonies of what God has done in the life of the people, I cannot but appreciate Him the more.”

On why he is hardly in the media, he said: “I don’t believe in unnecessary publicity because only God can publicise the ministry.

“It is His work and He alone knows what to do to make it big.  I don’t celebrate birthdays but I am celebrating my call because the Lord instructed me to always celebrate this call and many other celebrations, like the Feast of Passover, like Moses did in the Bible.

“I also don’t ask for financial help because I don’t believe in forcing people to give money.

“Since I am also not sure of the source of their income, I trust only God to keep His business afloat.

“And I must tell you that God has been more than faithful to that pact. He gave me Isaiah 55 verse 1 at the inception of the call and He has never failed.”

The cleric reiterated that prayer remains the only weapon the people can use to conquer the many challenges bedevilling the country.

“The only solution is prayer and nothing else. The Lord said he will destroy the oppressors.

“I was called because of Nigeria and I will continue to pray for the good of Nigeria so I won’t be guilty,” he added.

  • Church celebrates visually-impaired law graduate

    Church celebrates visually-impaired law graduate

Members of the Praise Arena-Kingdom Light Christian Centre Lekki, Lagos, last week held a thanksgiving service for the graduation of a virtually-impaired Attorney of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Barrister Adesola Ajayi.

Ajayi, one of the five beneficiaries of the scholarship programme of the church for vulnerable and less-privileged people in the society, graduated from law school last December.

The elated barrister, who was elated at the service, recalled how he lost his sights.

He said: “When l left Lagos to my home town in Ijebu-Ife in 1996, I was sighted but l became blind within three days in Ijebu-Ife after experiencing pain in my eyes and that led to a dramatic change in my life.”

He noted that life was unbearable as having to cope with his visual impairment was very difficult, but stating “I was very hopeful and optimistic about life in spite of the odds around me.”

Narrating how he met Pastor Jummy Adetoyese-Olagunju, the senior pastor of the church, he said: “radio was my companion and I had him preach on his regular Kingdom Life Family programme on Eko FM and I called his number and narrated my story to him and he requested to see me and he came to my rescue at a crucial time in my life.”

Continuing, he said: “Pastor paid my way through primary and secondary school and supported me greatly during my law school programme in a way that amazed me.

“I was in primary six when my eyes went bad and it was very difficult for me to cope in school and I had to seek for help and help came. God gave me divine wisdom when, initially, reading with braille proved difficult, but today all is history.”

On why he studied law, he said: “l want to be a voice for the voiceless, defenceless and the vulnerable people in the society.”

Adetoyese-Olagunju, who was grateful to God for the successful completion of Ajayi’s programme, said: “We are only pencils in the hands of God. Our mission is to help the needy and provide safe haven to the less-privileged in the society.”

He appealed to well-meaning organisations and government institutions to provide employment opportunities for physically challenged people like Ajayi.

  • Accessing our New Dawn Heritage through the Force of Faith!

Accessing our New Dawn Heritage through the Force of Faith!

Welcome to another exciting edition. Today, we shall focus on ‘Accessing our New Dawn Heritage through the Force of Faith!’It is important to know that New Dawn is about experiencing new things; that is, change of story from glory to glory and paths that keep shinning brighter and brighter (Deuteronomy 33:25; 2 Corinthians 3:18).

We understand from the Scripture that, faith is a Kingdom mystery that confers mastery on believers. It confers us with supernatural mastery over all life’s situations and circumstances. As it is written: For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith (1 John 5:4). It took faith for the Israelites to cross the Red Sea to the other side. Also, it took faith for Abraham to receive Isaac as promised by God. Furthermore, he believed God was able to raise Isaac back to life even if he had to sacrifice him (Genesis 22:16-18). Thus, it is impossible to experience New Dawn without faith because faith is an ever-overcoming force. Even when the storms might rage on our way to the other side, it will take faith to cross over. We must recognise that where our faith stops is where our testimony stops; faith is our life wire!

Furthermore, faith has unlimited capacity for growth. It is written: We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth (2 Thessalonians 1:3).

Thus, faith is a growing spiritual virtue. However, we must learn how to grow our faith so we can keep crossing to the other side. Also, at redemption, God has dealt with every one of us a measure of faith (Luke 19:13). As a result, it is our faith that determines the limits of divine interventions in our lives. Remember, faith is not a risk; it is our access to our rights. Therefore, jealously guard your faith!

How can we Access our New Dawn Heritage through the Force of Faith?

Faith is a spiritual virtue and will require spiritual investment to grow (Galatians 6:7-8).

    • Engage in Diligent Study of the Word: As it is written: So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). There are two hearing in the above scripture; the first is hearing, the second is understanding. It is what we understand from the Word that stirs faith in us. For instance, the Ethiopian eunuch was reading the Bible and Philip said: …Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him (Acts 8:30-31). But as soon as understanding came alive, his faith came alive. Thus, faith is a product of our spiritual understanding of the truth. So, engage in the diligent study of the Word to the point of understanding.
    • Engage your Spirit in the Search: The Bible says: The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly (Proverbs 20:27). We are limited in our natural realm; so, let’s climb up to the spirit realm so we can access the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 2:14).Remember, the Holy Ghost can only teach our spirits; He cannot teach our minds. It is written: Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:13). So, let’s engage our spirit in the search; by so doing, we will find it quickly. Also, we should not just engage our intellect because it cannot comprehend the truth as the truth is beyond intellectual realm. Furthermore, we need a spiritual understanding of the Word by engaging, among other things, the Spirit of wisdom and revelation (Ephesians 1:17-18).
    • Engage in Prayer and Fasting in a Search when you are not finding: As it is written: Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21; see also 2 Corinthians 4:4). That is why He said when we pray and fast, our light will break out of obscurity (Isaiah 58:6/8/10). Among the non-negotiable price in our search for New Dawn experiences is prayer and fasting because it is the Word we find that defines the realm of faith we operate in.
    • Engage in a Lifestyle of Thanksgiving and Praise: It is written: Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name (Psalm 100:4, 16:11). People that operate by praise and thanksgiving as a lifestyle do not struggle for revelation.

In conclusion, to gain access to our New Dawn package, it takes the force of faith. For instance, the paralytic man took his inheritance by the force of faith as seen in Mark 2:4-5: And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. Jesus saw their faith and not their efforts. Another instance is the woman with the issue of blood. The Bible records: And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour (Matthew 9:20-22).So, it is not just sitting down and waiting for something to happen; it is engaging the force of faith to deliver our rights.

However, new birth is a fundamental requirement for us to engage the force of faith. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!” For further reading, please get my book: Understanding the Power of Faith. • Christian youths need not seek excitement outside, says Olukoya

Christian youths need not seek excitement outside, says Olukoya

General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) Worldwide, Dr Daniel Olukoya, has declared that Christian youths do not need to go outside the church to find musical and entertainment excitement.

He spoke at the maiden Mountain Top Mega Concert organised by MFM at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.

Olukoya said music can be an indicator of how far or close one is to God, citing the three categories of the archangels Gabriel, Michael and Lucifer as heads of the messengers, warriors and worshippers respectively.

However, because of the beauty of worship songs, he asserted Lucifer is so jealous when Christians worship God.

According to him, the three-and-half hour performance by different praise bands, groups and soloists, all of MFM ministries, was just twenty per cent of what the church has to offer, musically.

The popular preacher assured the musicians and singers that could not perform at the first edition because of time will perform at the next edition of the concert.

Olukoya and his wife, Pastor Sade, both choristers in their youth, were the hosts of the event.

They commended the excited audience, pointing out that the country is endowed with talented youths only waiting for the window of opportunity to display their talents.

Notable groups and solo performers that featured included the Youth Choir, which did Praise Medley; Seyi Moses; Uche Okereke and Richard Peters, who did worship medleys.

Heavenly Voices Acappella Singers did Omi Iye (Living Water); Divine Symphony Orchestra did Pomp and Circumstance by Edward Elgar while Osazee Adekola did He’s got the whole world (Negro Spiritual) and Why do the heathen rage (adapted from the Magic Flute by Wolfgang A. Mozart).

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Dr. Erastus Akingbola, Otunba Gbenga Daniel and a host of others attended the classical concert.

CAN begins moves to uplift persons with disabilities

The National Executive Council of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has approved an eight-point recommendation from its ad hoc committee to tackle the challenges facing persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the nation.

The four-man committee headed by Archbishop Magnus Atilade recommended a national day for awareness, sensitisation and care of PWDs in churches, starting from July 22.

It also urged the umbrella Christian body to develop a draft policy for disability matters in all the national, zonal, state and local government areas of CAN.

The committee further called for establishment of a disability desk at all levels of CAN operations to network with other bodies and organisations working with PWDs.

On training, the committee, which has Rev Dr Ikiye, Rev Dr Ibrahim Wushishi and Bishop Stephen Adegbite as members, advised CAN to run continuous skill programmes for PWDs, especially women and children.

It also called for establishment of a scholarship board to assist in educating persons with disabilities.

NEC members applauded the committee for a job well done, approving all its recommendations with immediate effect.

Atilade said with the adoption of the recommendations, the committee will proceed immediately to implementation.

“Christian churches have a history of being involved with PWDs. We have them in our churches and all around. It is our responsibility to give them a lift and make life worth living for them.

“We have to support them with resources, training and what have you to ensure they are better human beings with more productivity,” he explained.
