Firm unveils mosquito repellants

As part of its commitment to add comfort to the lives of the people, Mouka Limited, Nigeria’s leading manufacturer of mattresses and other bedding products, has launched advanced range of insect repellents to keep mosquitoes away from the people. This, it said, was part of its contributions towards the global campaign against malaria.

The Chief Executive Officer of the company, Raymond Murphy, who spoke during the launch of the product in Lagos said the product; ‘Mouka Mozzi’ insect repellents, would protect many Nigerians from mosquito bites.

According to him, Mouka Mozzi also provides protection from bedbugs, mold, bacteria spores, spiders, cockroaches and dust mites. Murphy said with each application, a consumer could enjoy 24-hour protection for up to three months which he said was not possible with insecticides.

He said the company became actively involved in the world malaria campaign, hence the need for products that would keep Nigerians free from malaria.

“For us it’s important because it’s part of our company’s cultures and part of our values to continue to invest in the research and development of mosquito repellant products here in Nigeria.

“With active ingredients extracts and after extensive research development and approval by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Commission (NAFDAC), we have developed an environmentally-friendly product that can be used for all of the family; from baby to kids to young adults and to elderly citizens.

“The product can be safely used by all in the domestic environment; it can be sprayed on matrasses, it can be spread on to fabrics such as cloths, and it can be spread on clothing as well,” he said.

So, it’s an environmentally eco-friendly and people-friendly product, he reassured.

“The products had been made available in parts of the country, including Sokoto, Kano, Maiduguri, Abuja, Southwest and Southeast states,” Murphy added.

Consumers don’t have to travel too far before they reach a retail point where they can buy the product.

“Our strategic objective is to make sure that we have Mouka Mozzi range of products easily available nation-wide as soon as possible,” he said.

According to him, the company had commenced sales of the product through a nation-wide distributor base. He said the company had gotten about 350 active distributors around the country. He added that the product is also available in shopping malls nation-wide

Dr. Omoniyi Kayode Yemitan, who conducted the chemical evaluation, efficacy and toxicological assessment of Mouka Mozzi, endorsed the products as safe for all members of the family, including expectant mothers and children.

Yemitan, who is of the Department of Pharmacology, Therapeutic and Toxicology at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, explained that the active ingredient in Mouka Mozzi was extracted from plants which makes it non-hazardous for humans.

Representing the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olajide Idris, the state Malaria Elimination Programme Manager, Dr. Abimbola Osinowo said the state government had renewed its commitment to tackling malaria using a multi-directional approach, which include environmental management and integrated vector control for prevention of malaria, adding that Mouka has taken a step in the right direction with the production of its repellents.

“As you are all aware, malaria is endemic in Lagos State and it poses a major challenge to the state as it impedes human development. It is both a cause and consequence of underdevelopment and remains one of the leading causes of morbidity in the state” the Commissioner said.

“The present administration has renewed the commitment of the state government to tackle the scourge of malaria using a multi-pronged approach including environmental management and integrated vector control for the prevention of malaria; effective diagnosis and appropriate treatment of malaria cases; and monitoring and evaluation with emphasis on operational research and the use of its results for evidence-based programming”, he further stated.

Chairman, Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Dr Saliu Olugbenga Oseni, who was represented by Dr. Sodipo Oluwajimi, expressed admiration for Mouka’s indigenous repellent manufacture, adding that the NMA would be willing to endorse the innovation as it joins Mouka in its resolve in tackling the malaria menace.

He said: “I am particularly happy that this product is borne out of research and development in Nigeria and the fact that it is an indigenous product is really commendable and we are willing to endorse the product”.

Earlier in the month, Mouka Mozzi was officially launched at the Mouka Business Partners Conference which held in Lagos, Abuja and Enugu.
