Onigbinde, Ogunjobi, others react to 3SC’s relegation

A former coach of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan, Adegboye Onigbinde on Wednesday expressed disappointment at the relegation of the Ibadan side from the Glo Premier League.

Onigbinde, who coached the then IICC Shooting Stars in the mid 80s, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the club was like his “baby’’. He said he was not, therefore, in the best position to advice on steps that could be taken to reposition the club, but added that the management was in a better position to do so.

It would be recalled that this would be the second time that the club would be relegated in the last seven years. 3SC first got relegated in 2006 and eventually gained promotion back to the premier league in 2009.

“Well, as a lover of the team, the team is like a baby to me. I’m not happy that the team is going on relegation. As for what to do to resuscitate the team, let the technical people and the administrators meet and think of what to do to change the fortunes of the club,’’ Onigbinde said.

In the same vein, Taiwo Ogunjobi, a former 3SC defence stalwart, also expressed sadness at the club’s relegation to the lower division.

Ogunjobi, who was also a former General Manager of the club, urged the Oyo State football authorities to ensure that only knowledgeable individuals were appointed to revive the club.

“The 3SC story is a sad one and it’s a concern to all of us from that area. It is so sad that they are relegated. But I think they must have learnt one or two things and there is need for us to put our house in order. Then we can start thinking about getting it out of the messy situation next season, I believe that the right people should be in the right places so that the club can redeem itself,’’ Ogunjobi added.

In his own reaction Mutiu Adepoju, the immediate-past General Manager of the Ibadan side, urged the management to look inwards and put their acts together.

“Its very sad to see Shooting Stars in this situation. I don’t know what went wrong, I believe the management of the team and the players are not happy about this. I’m sure that with their cooperation, they will weather the storm,’’ Adepoju said.

Felix Owolabi, a former player and board member of the club, told NAN that the once iconic club that held the nation spellbound with its exploits, had lost its pride of place.

“Shooting Stars had an identity and was a brand of the Yoruba race, when I was playing. The club, as far as I know today has lost its pride of place,’’ Owolabi said.

Meanwhile, Fatai Amoo, a former coach of the Ibadan side, declined to comment when contacted by NAN. Amoo said he still had some outstanding issues to resolve with the club, hence his refusal to speak.

NAN reports that this would be the second time in seven years that the team would be relegated to the lower division. 3SC first got relegated in 2006 and eventually gained promotion to the premier league in 2009.

The famed “Oluyole Warriors’’ finished in the 20th position on the league standings, with 46 points from 38 matches played.

NAN reports that the 3SC management on Tuesday sacked coach Busari Hakeem and his assistant, Tunde Odubola as part of measures to reposition the club for life in the lower tier of the national league.

3SC in critical talks on how to stay in premier league

Management Board, players and coaches of Shooting Stars MSports Club (3SC) of Ibadan have had a critical meeting and have resolved to work in unity towards the survival of the club in the elite division.

At a meeting held at the club’s Jericho office, Ibadan, the Oluyole Warriors tabled all the problems affecting the team and thereafter proffered possible solutions.

The meeting which had the remaining club’s Board Members in attendance was geared towards revamping the Ibadan based club and to spell out what should be done to ensure that 3SC stay in the top flight beyond this season.

Briefing SportingLife on how the meeting went, the club’s media officer, Jubril Arowolo, said it was held under a very peaceful and serene environment, although the deliberations called for sober reflection.

He said the entire staff of the club have agreed to work together in harmony to ensure that the traditional club does not go down to the lower league again this season.

Arowolo opined that the meeting was very fruitful and the Board Members in attendance: Hon. Anifowoshe Kelani, Ade Somefun, Bayo Ogunleke and Taiwo Richard all spoke in turns on the way out of the present precarious position of the club on the log.

“We had a fruitful deliberation today (yesterday). All the staff of 3SC had a meeting on the way forward. All those that matter in the club were present and they all spoke of what should be done to ensure that our darling club does not go on relegation,” Arowolo explained to SportingLife.

3SC have a mountain to climb when they face current league leaders, Enyimba of Aba in a Glo Premier League Matchday 35 tie. They are 19th on the league table with 42 points from 34 matches while their opponents are first with 58 points from 34 ties too.

Enyimba must fall in Ibadan — Busari

3SC coach, Hakeem Busari has said his side will not lose to table toppers, Enyimba in Wednesday’s Glo Premier League Matchday 35 duel at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan.

The Oluyole Warriors lost the first fixture in Aba 0-1 to Enyimba through a penalty.

Busari who waived aside any mention of revenge in the encounter said his side have worked very hard, believing that everything will fall in place in their favour after 90 minutes.

“There is no big or small match, we’re not new to each other. When we visited Enyimba at Aba we gave a good account of ourselves, unfortunately we lost 0-1 through penalty.

“We’ve done our home work very well, we’ll put up good a fight, hoping to grab the three points at stake.

“We’re not after revenge, I know it’ll be a tough game given the age long rivalry between the sides but we’ll avoid defeat in the game’’.

“People are most likely to see us as being under pressure, we’re not but taking our games as calmly as possible. Of course, you and I know that pressure doesn’t win a game rather it complicates things, so we’ve done everything to avoid pressure,” said the coach to supersport.com.

Busari said emphatically that his side will avoid relegation at the end of the ongoing season.

“Where we found ourselves right now is strictly not our own making, we have been unlucky, but I’m certain we won’t go on relegation.

“The league is still wide open, we’ve four matches left in the season and in football everything is possible.

“Nobody would’ve reckoned after our first four matches that we’ll be where we’re at the moment.

“We’re keeping the hope alive, no team right now is a write off for relegation. We’ll survive relegation this term and plan better next season,” Busari summed up.

3SC are at the bottom of the 20-team topflight league log on paltry 39 points.

    • Babatunde, Namo shine

3SC’s desire to further push upwards in league ladder suffered a major setback Wednesday following their 3-0 demolition by Nasarawa United

It was a tie that saw Solid Miner’s duo of Solomon Babatunde and Victor Namo emerging heroes after finding the net in the 22nd, 39th and 42nd minutes respectively. While Babatunde opened the floodgate, it was Namo that grabbed two goals in an interval of three minutes to put the game out of the reach of Oluyole Warriors who had hoped to at least pick a point away to improve their standing on the log.

With 42 points in 33 matches prior to Wednesday’s encounter, the Ibadan based side will be looking forward to the next tie against Federation Cup champions Enyimba on Sunday at home with a strong desire to earn vital points.

Though the Solid Miners who recently engaged the services of former Enyimba and Super Falcons coach Kadiri Ikhana, are equally down the ladder on the log, the Lafia based side have recorded some impressive results of late. Two earlier ties has seen the side defeat Bayelsa United 2-1 at home followed by a 1-1 draw away against Akwa United. The side will however be ready to battle to finish when they face ambitious ABS away at the weekend.
