Ogun doctors applaud Abiodun on revised salary structure

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Ogun chapter has commended Gov. Dapo Abiodun for implementing the revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and the new minimum wage.

They said that honouring his words was a major commitment to the welfare of medical professionals in the state.

Addressing newsmen in Abeokuta on Saturday, the chairman, Dr. Ogunjimi Lukman, expressed appreciation on behalf of the association.

He said the governor’s action showed government’s responsiveness to healthcare professionals’ concerns.

“Today, we convey our heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun, for keeping his promise.

“This commitment from the government is a clear demonstration of its dedication to the welfare of doctors in Ogun state,” Ogunjimi said.

He recalled that members of the association had resolved to embark on a strike beginning August 5, 2024, following an Emergency General Meeting on July 23.

He said the plan, however, was temporarily suspended on August 29 to allow for negotiations with the state government.

Ogunjimi, however, said some concerns remained unaddressed, particularly regarding doctors associated with Olabisi Onabanjo University and medical professionals under the Hospital Management Board (HMB) and the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Ogunjimi assured that discussions on these issues would continue with the government in the coming days to ensure fair treatment and support across all medical departments.

He also reiterated the commitment of the association to constructive engagement with the government for the good of the health sector.

Abiodun takes BP reading as Ogun begins mass screening for diabetes, hypertension Monday

Ogun State Government said it will commence statewide screening for diabetes and hypertension on Monday, October 28 to give residents opportunity to know their status and avert preventable non-communicable diseases.

The Commissioner of Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, stated this at the weekend while briefing newsmen at the Health ministry conference room, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, to announce the launch of ‘Project 10 Million – Know Your Number, Control Your Number’ in the state.

Coker said the initiative is part of a national health promotion and awareness campaign spearheaded by the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum (NHCF) aimed at combating the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly hypertension and diabetes, across the country.

She described NCDs such as hypertension and diabetes as significant health challenges in Nigeria that contribute to approximately 27 percent of all annual deaths, stressing that the risk of dying from these conditions for people between the ages of 30 and 70 is estimated at 17 percent.

She noted that there was the urgent need for a comprehensive intervention to ascertain prevalence rate, adding that the initiative has been endorsed by the Nigeria Governors Forum(NGF) and supported by the Health Commissioners from 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to her, the exercise will begin on October 28 and ends November 3 nationwide and it is expected capture 10 million Nigerians with a special focus on reaching underserved communities to ensure that vulnerable populations have equitable access to essential care.

The commissioner said the initiative will be extended to  the 236 wards across Ogun 20 Local Government Areas, assuring that the screening will be accessible at all primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare facilities as well as in churches, mosques, parks and markets throughout the state.

“Our goal is to ensure that every resident has the opportunity to know their numbers, take control of their health, and avert preventable non-communicable diseases, specifically diabetes and hypertension.

“This campaign is not only about screening; it is about saving lives through preventative care. Our objectives for Project 10 Million in Ogun State are clear:Screen a significant number of our residents for hypertension and diabetes during the campaign week, provide immediate counselling and referrals for individuals with sub-optimal results and link newly detected cases to treatment facilities for ongoing care,” she said.

She said the campaign will also focus on increasing public awareness about the risks and management of hypertension and diabetes, enhance data collection on the prevalence of NCDs to inform health policies and planning and support the creation of hypertension and diabetes registers in the state.

She urged all citizens of age 18 and above to take advantage of the opportunity by visiting designated facilities or outreach site during the campaign period to get screened.

“This initiative aligns with the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative and the Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) compact signed by the governors with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“It reflects our shared commitment to improving health outcomes for all Nigerians. In Ogun State, this campaign will complement our ongoing efforts to safeguard the lives of our residents through preventative care. By working together, we can ensure a healthier future for our communities,” she added.

He said the state government had assisted the association in building its secretariat, while palliative measures had been implemented to cushion the impact of the current inflation on members.

He praised the governor’s efforts and is optimistic that his administration will continue addressing retirees’ concerns.

Abiodun: uncontrolled mining causing ecological disasters in Ogun

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has said indiscriminate mining of laterite and other minerals causes most of the ecological problems in the state.

The governor urged members of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Ecological Fund to make federal agencies in charge of mining to monitor the activities of miners to prevent ecological disasters.

Abiodun said this when he hosted members of the House of Representatives Committee on Ecological Fund in his office at Oke-Mosan in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The committee members were in Ogun State to monitor some areas impacted by gully erosions and other natural disasters.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, said his administration was ready to work with Federal Government agencies to stop the degradation of the environment.

He said: “I would like to implore you to talk to the respective agencies that monitor mining so that we can work together as prevention is better than cure.

“Yes, there is the issue of climate change, but I think while we are trying to resolve these issues and find ways to improve the lives of the people who are being impacted, we must also look at the causes of the erosion problem.

“The major cause is organisation. These are all areas that have been impacted because of the effect of infrastructure development right across the state.

“Mining is a big concern that we have here in Ogun State. With mining of laterite and other natural resources, the land is actually opened up. At the end of the day, the mining sites are not put back into proper condition. That is why when we experience a rainfall, erosion starts. And we have this kind of very aggressive erosion which causes problems for our people.

“So, if we can stop this thing from happening in the first instance, it will limit the devastation our people suffer.

“The hope of our people rests in you to help us get the funding to help us ameliorate the problems our people are having with this devastation.”

The committee’s Deputy Chairman Sina Oyedeji assured the people of Ijebu-Ode and its environs that the Federal Government would collaborate with the state government in addressing the gully erosion that is threatening the area.

Oyedeji, who spoke when he led members of the Committee to on the spot inspection of gully erosion sites in Ijebu-Ode, said something must be done urgently to arrest the situation.

Abiodun okays N77,000 as minimum wage

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved N77,000 as the minimum wage. The payment takes immediate effect.

The decision was revealed after a meeting between Prince Abiodun, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi and the leadership of the Organised Labour comprising Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), to discuss the implementation of the new minimum wage.

The governor, who spoke through the SSG, said no worker should earn less than N77,000, starting from this month.

Prince Abiodun said his administration meant well for the people and had taken steps to ameliorate citizen’s suffering.

He said he was in touch with the organised private sector to take a cue from the minimum wage policy, ‘’as their workers are not exempted from the economic realities in the country, to improve the living standards of people in the state holistically.’’

The governor said the private sector should enter into dialogue with their stakeholders to arrive at a commensurate minimum wage for the sector, while he would set up a monitoring team to see how it was implemented by the private sector, to ensure no one was short-changed.

Following the death of another aide of  former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun, the Forum of Special Assistants has appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to pay their severance gratuities on compassionate grounds.

The deceased, Mr Temitope Osifade, served as one of Amosun’s special assistants between 2015 and 2019, but he and others are yet to receive their statutory severance allowances.

According to a statement signed by Fakorede Adesanya, Okoya Babatunde and Musiliu Oladeinde, the Forum of Special Assistants (2015 – 2019) mourned the death of Osifade and wished he were alive to receive the expected kind gesture of Governor Abiodun.

  • Abiodun: Putting smiles on the faces of the people

Abiodun: Putting smiles on the faces of the people

    • By Abdulaziz Alli

From the  inception of  the Prince Dapo Abiodun led-administration in Ogun State, the governor has been up and doing in  performing his statutory functions of securing the lives and property of residents and ensuring their welfare which of course is the core of responsible and responsive governance.

To transform its vision into an enduring reality, the administration adopted the ISEYA mantra through which it has embarked on massive construction and rehabilitation of roads, provided affordable housing schemes, healthcare facilities, and other infrastructure that have been impacting positively on the welfare and wellbeing of the people across the State.

The methodical and impactful manner through which it has continued to provide soothing palliatives and measures as response to ameliorate the current difficult times being experienced across the country show that indeed the administration is altruistic.

One recalls that in February, Governor Abiodun announced a N5 billion intervention fund to provide food palliatives as well as other succour to meet the educational and health needs of the down trodden and generally cushion the effect of rising cost of living and inflation.

“In this direction and through targeted interventions, we aim to address these challenges by implementing a series of phased initiatives aimed at alleviating these burdens on all our citizens. The state has taken the following steps: Education sector: Providing a minimum of five exercise books for all 850,000 students in our public primary and secondary schools. We are providing a one-time N10,000 education support grant for at least 100,000 pupils in our public primary and secondary schools in the state and providing all 27,600 indigent students in tertiary institutions nationwide with an education grant of N50,000 each.” Abiodun revealed these at the Press Conference he addressed on the plans at the Olusegun Osoba Press Centre.

As at today, no fewer than 70,000 beneficiaries including pregnant women, children, the elderly, market women and other members of the informal sector were provided with health insurance cover just as pregnant women were provided free pre-natal care, as well as an additional N5,000 per birth and free post-natal care in the State Hospitals and Primary Health Care Centres under the Ibidero Scheme.

Under the edu-cash component of the scheme, about N245 million has been disbursed to indigent students in public primary and secondary schools while over N1.2 billion were disbursed to 24,004 students in tertiary institutions across the state. It is also on record that shortly after the removal of fuel subsidy, Governor Abiodun after consultation with the labour unions started paying the sum of N10,000 extra to all categories of workers and pensioners across the state.

Not done, the administration embarked on the sale of rice to workers and pensioners across the state at subsidized prices such that 10kg was sold for N8,500, 20 kg for N17, 000 and 50 kg for N42,500 at a time when a 50 kg of rice in the open market  was sold for at least N75,000. One of the workers who benefitted, Ishola Sofoluwe of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure told Ogun Update that the gesture was timely as it would go a long way in making living more abundant for members of his family particularly at this time that the prices of food stuffs have gone up.

Still on keeping to his promise to make food palliative available to about 300,000 households across state, the administration of Abiodun embarked on distribution of food items to Muslims during the Ramadan period and churches during the Easter celebration across the three senatorial districts of the state.

Reacting to this, the Grand Chief Imam, Ijebu-Ode Central Mosque, Sheik  Miftaudeen  Ayanbadejo also in a chat with Ogun Update said “I thank His Excellency, Governor Abiodun for this palliative because there is hunger in the land and whatever the government can do to bring relief is welcome”

Speaking in the same vein, the Bishop of Remo Diocese, Methodist Church Nigeria, The Rt. Rev. Bamidele Ibikunle, who spoke at the Rev. Mellor Methodist church, Agbowa, Sagamu, where  his members benefitted from the food palliative, said the gesture would go a long way in easing the suffering of the people particularly those who are not sure of where the food would come from during the Easter period.

Another critical area where the administration has put smiles on the faces of the people at this difficult time is through the Free Surgery Intervention Scheme targeted at the indigents who needed to undergo surgery, but did not have the resources to do so. The exercise was carried out in the state hospitals across the state at the end of which over 1,500 people benefitted.

Mrs. Arinola Adenuga, whose six-year-old son benefitted expressed happiness about the gesture saying that the burden of raising funds for the well-being of her son had been taken care of. Similarly, 20-year-old Okuwobi Ayomide, 18-year-old Onaleye Solomon, and 13-year-old Olusola Abdulquazeem, who underwent different surgical operations were full of praises for the governor.

One other area where the governor has done very well to alleviate suffering of the people is the transportation intervention. It is on record that the governor had earlier procured some buses for his administration’s mass transit programme. Immediately after the fuel subsidy was removed, Abiodun took the bull by the horn by becoming the first governor to embrace the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative.

The buses were converted to CNG and deployed to different routes, thereby making commuters pay relatively lower fare. For example, a CNG bus ride from the governor’s office in Oke-Mosan to Kuto, Sapon, Omida, Iyana Mortuary and Panseke in Abeokuta is N100 as against the N300 charged by public transporters. Apart from affordability, commuters enjoy free wi-fi in the air-conditioned buses. According to Mr. Olaifa Sofoluwe, a businessman who lives in Abeokuta but has his business at Mowe, the provision of CNG buses by the state government has made operations of his business seamless as he now commutes Mowe, Ibadan and Lagos Island with ease.

Furthermore, the introduction of E-bikes recently by governor Abiodun as alternative to petrol bikes is a further demonstration that the government is concerned about the hardship people are going through. A civil servant who works with the Agro Service Corporation in Asero, Abeokuta and owns one of the e-bikes, Sulaimon Balogun, said he abandoned his car at home for the e-bike which only costs him N1,200 to charge the two batteries a day compared to the N2,500 he spent daily to fuel his car even before the recent increase in the price PMS.

He thumbed up Abiodun for bringing the initiative down to Ogun State to help the people.

On his part, the state chairman of the Articulate Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association of Nigeria (AMORAN), Otunba Taofeek Sokoya commended Governor Abiodun for introducing E-bikes into the transport sector of the state, as he puts it, “The e-bikes have brought about a new regime for transport fare for commercial motorcycle operators and passengers across the state”.

All of these interventions notwithstanding, the governor has been unrelenting in road construction such that he commissioned three of such roads back to back for three days in the month of May. At this trying period when every kobo counts, good roads would ensure that vehicle owners do not spend much in maintenance. What about the silent but steady revolution going on in the agricultural sector,  one of which is the rice cluster he commissioned recently in Magboro that is capable of fetching N1billion in one tranche of harvest?

  • Laderin train station road to be completed soon, says Abiodun

Laderin train station road to be completed soon, says Abiodun

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun yesterday promised that the building of Laderin train station road in Abeokuta would soon be completed.

He said his administration, upon the construction of a world-class airport at Ilishan, deemed it fit to open up a new access road directly from the Sagamu-Benin Expressway, even as Ilishan and Iperu roads still exist.

He said this during a special church service to usher in 2024/2025 Legal Year, held at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta.

The governor said the contractor handling the road project had just completed the construction of two big box culverts (mini-bridges) that would channel water away from the road, while earthwork and drainage would soon begin.

He said: “We don’t understand why a train station is built without an access road as part of that project conception. Today, we have built a world-class airport in Remo; can you imagine that we built that airport without considering the access road to that airport?

“There are other existing roads to that airport. However, we have begun the construction of an access road that tees off the Sagamu-Benin Expressway. If you are coming to that airport, you don’t need to go through Ilisan or Iperu; you make a left turn straight to the airport. This is what a project from inception should look like.

“In this instance, this train station was conceived, built and completed without an access road being part of the project.

“As a responsible governor and government, we have taken it upon ourselves to award the contract for the road leading to that train station, and that contract is currently ongoing. However, the construction of two big box culverts that will channel storm water away from the road has been completed.

“Earthwork and drainage will start. I will, however, personally urge the contractor to ensure he finishes in record time.”

Abiodun said the legal year provides an opportunity to reaffirm commitment to pursue justice as well as continually improve the administration of justice.

He said the outgoing year witnessed the resilience and dedication of the judiciary system despite challenges confronting the nation, adding that the judiciary had, however, remained the beacon of fairness, integrity and independence.

“As we all know, the judiciary is the bedrock of democracy, the pillar that upholds justice, equity and fairness, which safeguards our rights to freedom and ensures the stability of our society.

“The commencement of the new legal year offers the chance to reiterate the importance of justice in the society, a time for introspection on the ethics of the profession, principles of justice and commitment to serving the public good,” the governor said.

The maintenance of law, order and administration of justice, Prince Abiodun emphasised, was linked as essential to ensuring healthy politics and achieving a just society.

He hoped that members of the state judiciary would fulfil their constitutional roles, expressing confidence in their commitment to uphold the rule of law, ensure justice and safeguard the rights of every citizen.

“I am confident that law officers will continue to perform their duties with the highest level of professionalism and dedication in alignment with the state government’s vision of a fair, just and equitable society, free from anarchy and tyranny,” the governor noted.

In a sermon titled: ‘Let Justice Flow,’ the Archbishop of the African Church, Most Reverend Solomon Ojumu, stressed the need for judges to deliver impartial judgments, while judicial officers should ensure quick dispensation of justice, as justice delayed is justice denied.

Archbishop Ojumu called on Nigerian leaders to do the needful to reduce suffering in the land, as there is hunger and desperation among the poor due to the sins of the few elite.

The Chief Judge of the state, Hon. Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, read the only lesson of the service taken from Romans 12, verses 9-21.

    • Governor, Labour leaders meet

Ogun State workers will soon smile, as Governor Dapo Abiodun has said his administration is working towards implementing the new minimum wage.

The governor, who said this at a meeting with the leadership of organised labour at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan Abeokuta, noted that workers had been instrumental in the economic growth the state was experiencing.

He promised the union leaders that Ogun State would not take second place in the implementation of the wage.

Abiodun said: “On the new minimum wage, all hands are on deck working assiduously, and I am sure that as always, we will not be number two in the implementation of the minimum wage.

“I have told my team that we should roll up our sleeves; we should work as hard as we can without putting undue pressure on our people. We should be creative, more efficient, block loopholes and increase our revenue so that we can afford to pay the new minimum wage comfortably, and by the grace of God, we will not be second in terms of implementation.”

He pleaded for continued partnership from organised labour, stressing that their cooperation had led to economic prosperity, as the state budget had increased from less than N400billion at the inception of his administration to the current N703billion, with performance at 80 per cent.

The governor added that the state was looking at a trillion Naira budget for next year’s appropriation.

He said he initiated the meeting as part of efforts to engage stakeholders involved in the movement of people to find solution to the current situation caused by fuel subsidy removal.

Abiodun, who took time to explain the intricacies of the oil sector, acknowledged that the current realities were the fallout of the Federal Government’s decision, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to reposition the country’s economy for sustainability.

He said as a responsible government, his administration had put measures in place to cushion the effects on the people.

“We have begun energy transition programme by converting our mass transit buses to CNG and launching electric motorcycles and tricycles.

“On Monday, we met transport unions. They demanded that we should ramp up the availability of these alternative means of fuelling transportation in the state and widen the scope because of the success they have recorded.

“The Federal Government is making rice available for us to sell at subsidised prices to everybody. It is also providing us with 500 CNG kits that we will use to convert 509 commercial vehicles so that we can reduce the cost of transportation,” Prince Abiodun added.

The Federal Government, he said, would send 20 CNG buses in the first instance to the state, while the state government would provide 100 CNG buses to transport unions.  He noted that transportation costs were expected to be reduced by 50-80 per cent, as more people would embrace electric motorcycles and CNG vehicles.

The governor attributed fuel scarcity to operational and financial issues, ‘’while hike in pump prices is due to subsidy removal and floating of the Naira.’’

“With all that has been put in place, with all hands on deck and commitment to energy transition, by the time we have transitioned from over-reliance on petrol to CNG, to electric vehicles and other forms of energy, you will begin to see that the cost of transportation, which is where the problem really lies, will begin to drop.’’

State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Hameed Benco, appreciating the governor for always making the organised labour part of his decision-making process, stressed the need to enforce price regulation, as traders had taken advantage of the economic situation to exploit people.

The Chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Akeem Lasisi, advocated that workers should operate from their homes until the situation improved, while the Joint Negotiation Committee Chairman, Comrade Isa Olude, called for measures that would give relief to workers and pensioners.

Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, thanked the governor for allaying workers’ fears, noting that he had demonstrated capacity and strong will in dealing with issues concerning workers’ welfare and well-being.

  • Harvest of plaudits as Abiodun breaks 21-year jinx on Ewekoro Road

Harvest of plaudits as Abiodun breaks 21-year jinx on Ewekoro Road

    By Kayode Akinmade

Nigeria returned to civil rule in 1999 after decades of military dictatorship, but democracy didn’t always bring dividends. Ask the long-suffering people of Ewekoro, Ogun State, who for years watched their businesses ruined and many lives lost on the 70-kilometer Abeokuta-Ifo-Ota-Lagos Expressway. Governors came and promises were made, but the people saw no action on the road. Until recently, that is, when the current governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, dared the odds and persuaded a hitherto unbending Federal Government to let him reconstruct the road, a federal edifice, for the benefit of the long-suffering populace. And so when, on Friday, the Governor flagged off the construction of the road with a pledge to complete it in 18 months, his pronouncement was greeted with roaring applause.

Adjudged as the second busiest road in Nigeria, the road, as Governor Abiodun himself noted on the occasion, connects Abeokuta and its hinterlands to Lagos State, and links Ilaro in Ogun West to Sagamu in Ogun East through the Sagamu-Interchange-Papalanto-Ilaro road. On the Ota side, it also connects the Sango-Atan-Owode-Idi-Iroko road, leading to border towns and the Benin Republic. The road, he said, “serves as a critical artery for numerous industrial hubs in Ota, including the Lafarge Cement Factory, Ile-Ise Awo, various schools, and higher institutions. The communities along this corridor are densely populated, and the road’s strategic location has a significant impact on trade and economic activities.”

But as the Iyaloja (market women’s leader) of Ewekoro, Alhaja Busirat Ejire, said on the occasion, the road had been a blight even on royalty, as critics wondered loudly if the Olu of Itori, ruler of the community that the road literally cut off from the rest of the state, ever had the ears of the present governor reputed for spreading road projects across the state. Hear the excited market leader: “We thank you for the phenomenal work you are doing for us market women. We are daily praying for you and may the prayers be answered. This road is for us and the Olu of Itori. He received a lot of tongue-lashing because of this road. We market women suffered greatly on account of this road.” And the Olu of Itori, Oba Akorede Akamo, did not mince words: “I do tell people you are Mr talk and do, a silent achiever. For over 20 years, this road had been so bad. We have always prated that God should bring the person that will do this road. I knew from the day you came to Itori that you will be the one to do this road. I have used almost four governors, starting from Baba Osoba to OGD, Amosun and you. Why you sir? It is because you have been ordained for good things.”

The Olu and Iyaloja were speaking at the flagging-off ceremony attended by the governor and his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele; the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Oludaisi Elemide; the chairman of the Ogun State All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Yemi Sanusi; a former deputy governor of the state, Alhaja Salimot Badru, and a retinue of federal and state lawmakers, including Senator Akin Odunsi, Hon. Abiodun Akinlade,, Hon Tunji Akin-Ose, Hon Yusuf Amosun and Hon Maroof Afolabi Afuwape. The Olu of Ilaro and chairman of the Ogun  State Council of Obas, HRH Kehinde Olugbenle, led royalty at the ceremony attended by members of the business community, students, market union and transport union chiefs.

The Olu of Ilaro toed the line of the Olu of Itori. Hear him: “This road caused me palpitations for almost 12 years. God has attended to the things that caused us fear. I thank you on behalf of Nigerians; the people that ply this road. I thank the President too. This road is being salvaged during your tenure. Indeed, we are in a tenure of renewed hope. We were in a state of hopelessness. This is the only road that enters Yewaland. You have done what your predecessors over the years refused to do.”

As Governor Abiodun himself noted on the occasion, the road is significant not only to Ogun State but also to Lagos State and the nation at large, as it provides a thoroughfare for people going to the neighbouring country. Hear him: “ I am glad to inform you that work is beginning on the road immediately. The excuse then was that there was a sitting contractor on the road. The best the state could do at that time was to carry out palliative works on the critical sections along the road axis. We re-opened our appeal to the Federal Government to reconstruct the road upon the inauguration of His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who graciously, through the Honourable Minister for Works, handed over the reconstruction of the road to Ogun State.”

To fast-track the reconstruction of the road, Abiodun said, five reconstruction teams would be involved, and each team would handle one of the following zones: Ota/Ifo, Papalanto, Ewekoro/Itori, Abeokuta, and the team allocated for palliative works to ensure smooth traffic along the project alignment during the construction duration. “Each zone covers a distance of approximately 15 km. The Abeokuta/Ifo/Sango/Abule-Egba Road project is expected to be completed in eighteen months,” he said.

Speaker after speaker appreciated the governor for redressing the people’s plight. A transport union chief, Taofeek Sokoya (Danku), told the governor: “It is for us that you have done this road. Currently, we take about five hours to get to Ota from Ita Osin. When this road is completed, it will only take 45 minutes.” The representative of the community development associations in the area, Comrade Oluseun Oke, could not hide his excitement. He said: “This road had given Ewekora a bad name for long. Whenever accidents happened, people would say it happened in such and such a place in Ewekoro. We thank God that all of that has become history.” The chairman of the state council of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Francis Adeyanju, enthused: “We don’t have much to say but to thank you. We want to assure you of our support always, because you have given us enough reasons to keep supporting you.”

Also speaking on the occasion, the state APC chairman observed: “The total rehabilitation of this Abeokuta-Ota-Lagos road is a major dividend of democracy in this state.  People had been clamouring for the reconstruction of the road. With the flagging off of the reconstruction of this road, we must emphasise the immediate benefits. It will comfort our people, foster economic growth, create more jobs and make things easy for all commuters.”

The representative of Craneburg, the construction company handling the project, Edmond Maalu, thanked Governor Abiodun for trusting the company with the iconic and landmark project after it had proudly partnered with the state on some of its most laudable projects, including the Ijebu Ode-Epe project and the Agro-Cargo Airport. The significance of the project to the trade and commerce of Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole, he said, could not be overemphasized. He appealed for the support and understanding of commuters and stakeholders in the months ahead, adding: “We will liaise with the state  and federal traffic agencies to ensure that the discomfort that may be experienced due to the lane restrictions and possible closures will be as limited as possible. We also assure of our commitment to giving employment opportunities to both skilled and unskilled workers within these communities as well as creating opportunities for small businesses in the course of our activities.”

Going by his track record, the people know that Governor Abiodun will keep his word. As the state Commissioner for works, Ade Akinsanya, said on the occasion: “The state government will ensure the timely completion of the road for the benefit of commuters and residents of Ogun State, Lagos and the entire country in general.”
