    • Governor vows to address food scarcity

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun yesterday launched the first phase of the distribution of fertilisers to farmers, with a promise to tackle food scarcity.

About 7,000 of 12,000 farmers earmarked for the scheme will benefit from the first phase in which 24,000 fertilisers will be distributed.

Speaking at an event held at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Prince Abiodun acknowledged the growing disparity between food supply and global food production, which had led to scarcity.

He said: “It is widely known that the global population is growing, while the overall food production is falling and struggling to keep pace. We will be more aggressive in tackling food inflation.

“The initiative symbolises more than just the distribution of fertilisers. It represents our collective resolve to support agriculture sector and ensure farmers have the resources they need to cultivate their land effectively and efficiently.

“The provision of the right type and adequate amount of fertiliser is crucial to boost crop yields, enhance quality and ultimately secure food supply for our state and the country.”

The distribution, the governor said, marked another significant milestone in the ongoing commitment to ensuring food security and empowering farmers, stressing that agriculture remained the backbone of the nation’s economy, creating and providing sustenance and reliable job opportunities for millions of Nigerians.

He noted the challenges farmers were facing in terms of unstable market prices and climate change, adding that with the right support and incentives, farmers could drive and transform the country’s agricultural sector.

Abiodun said: “12,000 farmers will benefit from this programme. In the first phase, at least 7,000 farmers are to benefit. This distribution spans categories of farmers, including the Nigeria Cassava Association, Rice Farmers Association, Maize Association of Nigeria, Farmer Allotees, Agro-services Crop Farmers, the Agricultural Development Programme, the Farmer Settlement and Estate Farmers, Tree Crops Farmers and farmers in all 20 local governments.

“It is gratifying to note that the ongoing cooperation of states and the federal government on this transformation agenda, particularly in agriculture, will create opportunities. It will serve as a viable business venture, and we should all come together to ensure its success,” the governor noted.

The present administration, the governor said, had designed and implemented programmes and interventions through the implementation of the “Building Our Future Together” agenda as encapsulated in the ISEYA mantra.

According to the governor, reforms such as the allocation of agricultural land to investors in the sector at Imasayi, Afon, Oke-Odan, Mamu, and Odeda Farm Settlement, as well as the allocation of land to members of the State Executive Council, House of Assembly members and High Court judges, are geared towards operationalising our back-to-land agenda.

He said his administration had given materials to 50 cassava women farmers in collaboration with the National Agriculture Land Development Authority, empowered 3,000 farmers with farm inputs under the Ogun N-CARES project, as well as provided capacity building for 12,000 farmers under the Value Chain Development Programme.

Commissioner for Agriculture, Bolu Owotomo, said the administration had intervened in farming by giving 1,000 farmers, especially those from farm settlements, a 50 per cent reduction in purchasing fertiliser, pesticides and cassava stems.

He said the state government had also intervened through the off-take programme by identifying 30,000 farmers and sharing them into clusters of 65 per cent in mechanisation and 50 per cent discount in inputs and capacity building.

The Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter, Alhaji Kudirat Kusimo, appreciated the state government for its efforts in providing succour to the farmers, while calling on his colleagues to be honest by using the fertiliser for the purpose it was meant for.

    Abiodun seeks more farm labs

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun yesterday said the establishment of farm labs (settlements) across the country was the only panacea to ensure food sufficiency for the people.

He said given the current situation in the country, it is time for Nigerians to embrace agriculture and form the habit of eating what they grow and growing what they eat.

The governor spoke during a visit to Soilless Farm Lab, located at Awowo in Ewekoro Local Government of Ogun State.

Relating the Farm Lab to a similar initiative he saw some years ago in Israel, where people work, live, worship and play in a farm settlement, Prince Abiodun said the Soilless initiative is an inspiring model that should be replicated across the country.

He said he would encourage the setting up of similar settlements in other parts of the state, adding that it was one initiative the Federal Government would support.

“We are going to support the Chief Executive Officer of this project and the trainees, and we are going to replicate this in Ogun State. I believe other states will also key into it as it will solve food problems and unemployment,” the governor noted.

He said the state government has waived the payment of any form of fees for the issuance of title documents, to encourage the promoters of Farm Lab.

According to him, the management of the farm would receive the title documents within 24 hours.

“As a responsible state government, we are going to work with you. I had asked how far you had gone with regularising your documents for this place, and you said you are not quite sure that you are still struggling with it.

“Today, by the authority vested in me as the Executive Governor of Ogun State, in the next 24 hours, you will receive your title documents for this place.

“And guess what? I waive all the fees, every single fee. The state government will not charge you a fee for the title document of this place; that is the least we can do,” he said.

Abiodun announced a donation of N20 million to the farm trainees on behalf of the state government.

“I have asked Samson Ogbole (the team lead) to come and meet me so we can both fashion out the kind of support he needs now and will need in future and how to replicate what is going on here.

“But I also want to support all of you. I am so encouraged by your level of enthusiasm, commitment, how intentional and deliberate you are, how responsible you all are. You know what you are; you are all champions.

“On behalf of the state government, I am donating N20 million to all of you,” he said.

The governor also expressed his delight at the beautiful tapestry of people from the length and breadth of the country and even outside the country, commending the team lead of the farm (Ogbole) for taking in over 1,000 trainee farmers between the ages of 18 and 35 every three months.

He hailed Ogbole for building leaders, capacity, and for generating revenue and foreign exchange, describing Soilless Farm Lab as a perfect example of a public-private partnership that should be replicated across the country.

He thanked the Alawo of Awowo, Oba Abdul-Fatai Tijani, for embracing the development of his town and the idea of Soilless Farm Lab when it was first brought to his attention by the team lead of the farm.

Oba Tijani commended the administration of Governor Abiodun for looking after the welfare of monarchs in the state, praising the governor for allowing the establishment of the farm, even after the former administration refused to give the nod for the beginning of the project.

Ogbole said the farm started the work-and-learn programme in September 2020, adding that the farm had been able to train over 10,000 people between then and November 2022.

He said in the last one year and six months, the farm had trained 6,000 young people from 28 states across the country, adding that the current batch comprised foreigners from Cameroon and Togo.

Publicity Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Mr. Tunde Oladunjoye, has said Governor Dapo Abiodun has been an advocate of not only financial autonomy, but also increased revenue for local governments.

He made this known yesterday in a statement in Abeokuta.

Oladunjoye said: “Before these emergency advocates and against the lies being peddled against Prince Abiodun, the governor has been in the forefront of the clamour for increased funding for local governments, as far back as three years ago.’’

He recalled that three years ago, the governor canvassed upward review of revenue sharing formula from the Federation Account. “Making the proposal, the governor said the formula should be reworked to stand as 30 per cent to federal, 45 per cent to states and 25 per cent to local governments, as against the current stand of 52.68, 26.72 and 20.60 per cent.

“The governor canvassed the position in Lagos while speaking at the Southwest Zonal Public Hearing on Review of Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission. “Represented by the Commissioner for Finance and Chief Economic Adviser, Mr. Dapo Okubadejo, Abiodun said there should be a downward review of the allocation to the Federal Government to 30 per cent.

“Noting that the current formula is no longer in tune with economic realities, the governor said the allocation ‘was forestalling the development of states and local governments”.
