Ifon/Ilobu war: Review 24-hour curfew, Olobu tells Adeleke

The Olobu of Ilobu, Oba Ashiru Olaniyan, has urged Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to review the 24-hour curfew imposed on the warring community so that his subjects can assess the ruins.

The Nation recalls that Governor Adeleke had imposed a 24-hour curfew on Ilobu, Ifon and Erin after a communal clash over a land dispute, which led to the shooting of 30 residents and loss of N2billion worth of property last week.

Olobu, in a statement yesterday, expressed sadness over the clashes, noting that “several clashes in the last 18 months have drawn us many decades backwards due to the greed, ambition and overzealousness of a few individuals, who lack a sense of history and see leadership as a tool of oppression.”

Speaking about the destruction witnessed by the residents of the community, he said: “I feel your pain, anguish and agony. I have watched in horror how you have been butchered and more than 30 of you killed just in 18 months, and how your houses have been set on fire, your goods razed, stores vandalised and means of livelihood violently destroyed. I plead with you to still maintain peace as we have been instructed by my forefathers.“

Oba Olaniyan cited instances where court and evidence favoured them as the true owners of the disputed land.

Thereafter, he made five demands from the Osun State Government, calling for arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the communal clash.

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke yesterday visited Ifon in Orolu Local Government and Ilobu in Irepodun Council to inspect the level of destruction in the warring communities.

The Nation reports that over 100,000 residents were displaced; lives were lost and over N2billon property were destroyed during the clash, which later spread to Erin-Osun, over land dispute.

Subsequently, Adeleke imposed 24 hours curfew on the communities and handed over warning letters of dethronement to the affected monarchs.

Yesterday, Adeleke, with some members of his executive council (exco) conducted an on-the-spot assessment on the warring communities, which lasted for about two hours.

The governor and his entourage toured Ilobu, Ifon and Erin-Osun.  The Nation learnt that several buildings were burnt in Ilobu, including two filling stations.

There were countless empty bullet shells in the places affected by the clash.

Most Ilobu residents have moved to the boundary of Okini via Ojutu bridge, a neighbouring town to the warring communities. They stood beside the road, lamenting the level of destruction.

Speaking to reporters after the assessment, Governor Adeleke condemned the level of destruction, lamenting that such crisis would give the state a bad image.

He aid: “We have gone round and as you can see, there are security operatives in all the places. The curfew imposed has been very effective because we went round the three communities- Ilobu, Ifon and Erin Osun.

“I am happy that the whole place is calm now. I want to commend security agencies for restoring peace.”

Osun State Police Command through its spokesperson, SP Adeola Adeoye, said: “Three suspects have been arrested in possession of a Dane gun.

“Thorough investigation will be conducted and suspects will be charged to court for prosecution. The command is monitoring the situation to fish out trouble makers and their sponsors, who will face the full wrath of the law.”

The warring communities of Ilobu and Ifon are still counting losses after a communal clash over a land dispute that started on Tuesday as over 100,000 people have been displaced and properties worth N2 billion destroyed.

The Nation reports that three people including an ex-councilor were killed while 30 others sustained gunshot injuries in the fresh attack between Ilobu(Irepodun Local Government Area) and Ifon(Orolu Local Government Area).

Meanwhile, Adeleke had declared a dusk-to-dawn curfew and summoned the kings of the warring communities for a meeting on Saturday.

However, a statement issued on Saturday by the state government through the Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi said: “Governor Adeleke has approved that the curfew be extended to Erin-Osun town. Governor (Adeleke) directs all security agencies such as the Military, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp NSCDC, Immigration, NDLEA, and Amotekun among others to extend its security surveillance to the community.

“All the security agencies are to ensure strict compliance to the curfew, which is now 24 hours daily until peace is restored. “Meanwhile, we seek to bring to the attention of the public that old videos of communal conflicts in some parts of Osun state are being circulated by opposition elements to spread false pictures of insecurity in Osun State.”

The National President of Ilobu Development Union, Pastor Olufemi Salako said: “On Friday morning, greater parts of Ilobu Community at Ganga, Idire, Apiponroro, Olobu Market, Ayedaade were seriously invaded, houses and shops were burnt down and people of Ilobu were attacked with guns.

“Unfortunately, the Erin-Osun community has also joined from behind, confirming it is a pre-planned and pre-meditated attack on Ilobu Community. So, this time around, it is not about Ifon and Ilobu fighting over disputed land, it is about the determination of Ifon-Osun and Erin-Osun Communities to completely exterminate the Ilobu Community.

“The ongoing carnage and killing, if not stopped, which has claimed several lives, displaced over 100,000 people, and destroyed properties worth over N2bn, started on Thursday evening. The attackers became emboldened as our calls to the Osun State Government, Osun State Commissioner of Police and the Osun Security Network fell on deaf ears.”

Meanwhile, the Ifon community through the spokesman of the king, Akeem Adekunle lamented that the security operatives that were deployed by the government were not enough.

Adekunle said: “As I am speaking with you, the situation is still manageable because the government declared a 24-hour curfew and we are seeing the presence of security operatives even though they are not enough. The same team that Ifon is using when we have an emergency is the same that Ilobu people are using.

“We heard gunshots from Ilobu people, we learnt that Ilobu attacked Erin people this morning and their houses. They are sufficiently attacking us. We have too many of the displaced people in our town.

“The video where Ilobu people mostly children and women are trooping out of the town is their strategy when they are ready for full-blown war. They will evict anything that can be a burden to them during the war and will remain only the full-grown men and their warriors to strike so that they won’t suffer any casualties.

“The Olufon attended the meeting but we are yet to be briefed about what happened at the meeting with the governor.“

Meanwhile, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and the Osun State Chairman of Allied Peoples Movement(APM),  Adewale Adebayo have sued for peace in the warring communities.

Oyetola said: “This unfortunate situation is not only heartbreaking but also undermines the peace and development we have all worked hard to sustain in Osun State. I strongly urge all parties to lay down their arms and embrace dialogue as the only path to resolving grievances.”

Also, Adebayo said: “I want to urge the Osun State Traditional Ruler Council to help the State Government to bring lasting peace in the warring communities.”

JUST IN: Adeleke imposes 24-hours curfew on two Osun councils

Following the raging communal clash between Ifon and Ilobu communities, Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke has declared a 24 hours curfew in two local government areas.

The Nation reports the communities had been at loggerheads over land disputed which resulted to killings and razing of houses.

On Friday ,three people were reportedly killed including an ex-councillor and 30 people were shot with women and children displaced.

After hundreds of houses were burnt yesterday, Adeleke declared dusk-to-dawn curfew and summoned the kings of the warring communities for a meeting on Saturday.

Commissioner for Information Kolapo Alimi said: “Adeleke has approved that the curfew be extended to Erin-Osun town. The curfew time is now 24 hours daily.

“Governor directs all security agencies such as the Military, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp NSCDC, Immigration, NDLEA, and Amotekun among others to extend its security surveillance to the community.

“All the security agencies are to ensure strict compliance to the curfew, which is now 24 hours daily until peace is restored. The imposed curfew was necessary to forestall escalation of the crisis and breakdown of law and order due to the communal clashes in the communities.”

Adeleke’s $20m fraud allegation against Oyetola mere shadow-chasing, says Ogundokun

A frontline politician, Chief Abiola Ogundokun, has described Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s $20 million fraud allegation against former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola as mere shadow-chasing.

He said this in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja, while reacting to a petition by Adeleke to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Oyetola.

Adeleke had, in the petition, alleged that Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, misappropriated a $20 million World Bank health grant while he was governor of the state.

Ogundokun said there was nothing serious in the petition other than a drama aimed at generating negative energy toward the 2026 governorship election in the state.

He described Oyetola as a man of sterling performance in the private sector as well as due diligence and strict adherence to rules in the public service as governor.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain also described the former governor as the pride of Osun and Nigeria, who should not be pulled down or given uncharitable names but encouraged to do more for the state.

According to him, there is the need to stop a destructive campaign of “I will destroy you if I can’t get it.

“Oyetola is honest to a fault,” he remarked, calling on the people of the state to join him in moving Osun forward.

Ogundokun advised Adeleke to prioritise good governance rather than engaging in frivolous activities.

“What Osun requires and deserves is focused leadership and serious engagements.

“I will advise Ademola Adeleke to stop playing politics with the exalted office of the governor by turning it to a petition writing apparatus.

“He should use the enormous power of the office to improve the lots of the people, instead of deploying the state resources to bully and witch-hunt a perceived enemy or enemies.

“Writing a petition against a man like Oyetola, to me, is like chasing a shadow.

“The task before Adeleke is huge, and meeting the expectations of the people should be his priority and not fighting an imaginary political foe,” he said.

The elder statesman urged the governor not to deviate from the vision of the state’s forefathers.

Rather, he said Adeleke should learn to build on the good foundation of his predecessor, instead of finding ways to shoot down his good legacies.

Obaship tussle: Orile-Owu indigenes urge Adeleke to implement Court of Appeal judgement

The indigenes of Orile-Owu in Osun State have called on the state governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke to implement the judgement of the Court of Appeal, Akure on the Obaship tussle in the town.

The Court of Appeal delivered its judgement in the two appeal cases on January 27, 2025, which saw the two appellants, both the Apena Compound as a whole and the Oba-elect Prince Samson Olubayo Adenrele victorious.

In each case, the judgement of Appeal Court Akure states that the appeal succeeded and was allowed, wherein the judgement of the High Court Osogbo, Osun State was set aside.

The indigenes under the auspices of Owu Development Foundation, (ODF) called on Adeleke to comply with the Appeal Court judgment which dethroned Oba Dauda Akinfalabi.

Owu Development Foundation in a press statement signed by its president, Professor Gbolagade Ayoola and its General Secretary Dr. Ezekiel Oyemomi posited that “going by the Court of Appeal judgement, the implication is that Orile-Owu does not have a king in place at the moment, a situation that is highly dangerous owing to the long-standing tension in the town while the matter lasted.”

They called on Adeleke to ensure the completion of the original process of approval, appointment and installation of the Oba-elect, Prince Samson Olubayo Adenrele as previously selected/elected by the Kingmakers.

According to ODF, “the good people of the ancient town of Orile Owu fervently await the action of Osun State Government, under its fair and just Governor His Excellency Isiaka Adeleke, to comply with the Appeal Court judgment dethroning Oba Dauda Akinfalabi thereby paving the way for completion of the original process of approving the appointment and installation of the Oba-elect Prince Samson Olubayo Adenrele.

The foundation appealed to Adeleke to ensure the completion of the original process of approving the appointment and installation of the Oba-elect, Prince Samson Olubayo Adenrele as previously selected by the kingmakers.

Former Osun Speaker Timothy Owoeye said Governor Ademola Adeleke allegation of $20million misappropriation against Adegboyega Oyetola has shut doors against future grants.

The Nation recalled that Adeleke accused Oyetola of misappropriating World Bank grant for which he petitioned the Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

Owoeye in a statement on Friday noted: “It is disappointing to see the unnecessary circus the current regime has created against allegations that are baseless and unfounded.

“I have been following the recent media drama of the Adeleke administration accusing former governor Oyetola of misappropriation of a $ 20 million World Bank health grant.

“What the Osun State government has done is to effectively shut the door against future grants and donor-assisted projects from development support institutions. Why is the governor always putting the cart before the horse?

“Couldn’t he have waited till the completion of the investigation by the anti-graft agencies before casting aspersions on offficials of the last administration who served their state diligently? What manner of approach to governance is this, all in the name of cheap politics?.”
