Be receptive to correction, Basiru tells Adeleke

Governorship aspirant and National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, has criticised the administration of Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke for its intolerance of constructive criticism.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, Basiru decried what he described as the governor’s habitual attacks on those offering useful advice, insisting that he will continue to speak out for the good of Osun State.

His reaction follows a recent rebuttal by the governor’s spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, who responded harshly to Basiru’s criticism of the government’s handling of socioeconomic issues in the state.

Basiru, a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Osun State and current chairman of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), said Adeleke’s administration has shown from the outset that it craves praise, even for minimal achievements.

“I will not relent in offering advice. What affects Osun affects me and many others. Unfortunately, this administration seems allergic to anything that is not praise,” he stated.

The statement reads: “The reaction is yet another sad example of the administration’s inability to engage in constructive discourse. Instead of addressing clear failures, the government continues its descent into baseless abuse, theatrical name-calling, and hollow propaganda.

“It is important to remind the Adeleke administration that governance is not about trading insults but about responding to accountability with facts. A government that has failed across critical sectors cannot hide behind slogans and solar lights that barely last a week.

“While the administration boasts of a 40 per cent debt reduction, it conveniently hides the fact that Osun’s federal allocation has increased by over 300 per cent. What the Adeleke government claims as financial discipline is simply the benefit of increased federal oil receipts, not strategic fiscal management and discipline.

“Governor Adeleke has denied the widespread reports of teachers disengagement since assuming office. Why did Adeleke sack about 5000 teachers employed by his predecessor, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola?

“Two and a half years after, why has he not engaged them again?. Senator Ajibola Basiru once said in an interview that APC doesn’t mind if Adeleke replaces all the 5000 with members of his party. What matters is securing the future of our children. Besides, Thursday, last week, made it exactly a year that Adeleke announced employment of temporary staff at the State-owned media. No employment letter has been issued to them till date.

“The road commissioned with media fanfare was washed away within two days, a clear indictment of the substandard quality that defines this administration’s projects. The recurring cases of solar panel poles breaking within weeks and nonexistent borehole project across wards is a testament to how little value is placed on durability and transparency.

“In a shocking display of poor planning, the government had to start digging under the Oke Fia flyover, because clearly trucks could not pass under. Is this the infrastructural revolution they boast about?

“Osun people have yet to see any clear agenda for agriculture, water and sanitation, or market expansion. These are critical to livelihood. Yet Adeleke’s government has ignored them while focusing on showmanship and media stunts.

“Adeleke’s handlers have made it a habit to resort to street-level abuse when called to account. This culture of insults and diversion cannot replace transparent governance. No self-respecting administration attacks its critics with gutter language instead of facts.”

Reaffirming his resolve to continue to fight and promote the interest of the state, the Osogbo born politician said, “I remain undeterred. I will continue to speak out for Osun people and demand real leadership, not choreography, not excuses, and certainly not an abuse-laced response to legitimate questions.”

The leader of the group, Ajani Ayodeji, disclosed that they are from Ede North Local Government Area where Governor Adeleke of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) comes from and trust the capacity of Oyebamiji to govern the state.

Ayodeji in a statement said: “As the Osun State governorship elections draw nearer, it is imperative to call for impactful and purposeful leadership because Osun takes the back seat, and the last two and a half years have been marked by poor handling of our state’s human, financial, and mineral resources.

“Osun, a fortress for the progressives until recently, deserves to be reconnected to the national power bloc to key into the developmental agenda of the federal government and ensure strategic alignment for growth and economic stability.

“Hence, Bola Oyebamiji, a seasoned banker, humanist, economist, and public administrator of repute, remains the best option for the state. His extensive and valuable experience in both private and public administration positions him as the best man to drive the needed change that Osun desires.”

“We urge our leaders, Chief Bisi Akande, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola CON, and every stakeholder who desires to see the prosperity of Osun and thirsts for her greatness to support Oyebamiji.”

“As the Osun State governorship election draws near, we believe it is time to demand impactful and purposeful leadership,” Ayodeji said in a statement. “Our state has taken the back seat, and the last two and a half years have been marked by poor management of Osun’s human, financial, and mineral resources. We are confident in Oyebamiji’s capacity to lead and reposition Osun for sustainable growth.”

Osun rector begs Adeleke to confirm 17-year contract staff, decries funding challenges

Rector of Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, Dr. Samson Adegoke, has appealed to Governor Ademola Adeleke to convert contract teaching and non-teaching staff who have served the institution for up to 17 years into permanent employees.

Speaking during a valedictory event marking his retirement on Thursday, Dr. Adegoke praised the dedication and sacrifices of the contract staff, stressing that they deserve regularization.

He also called for improved funding for the institution, lamenting that inadequate resources remained the biggest challenge throughout his eight-year tenure as Rector and 30 years of service.

“The most critical challenge we faced is the paucity of funds,” he said. “We’ve relied almost entirely on TETFund interventions for infrastructural development and the procurement of modern equipment for our laboratories, workshops, and studios.”

“Staffing is another major problem. Since 2012, when staff retired enmass to avoid contributory pension scheme, staff have been retiring normally without replacement. Thus today, the contract staff, more popularly known as “IGR Staff” far outnumbered the permanent staff.

“Another critical angle to this problem is that academic staffing requirement is not just about the number, rather about the right mix. To continue to meet the accreditation requirements, I want to appeal to the Governing Council and the State Government to help the College to convert our IGR staff to permanent staff, particularly considering their work experience. Majority of the contract staff have spent more than sixteen (16) years either as teaching or non-teaching staff of the College. This is very urgent!

Earlier, the Chairman Governing Council, Prince Diran Odeyemi, said that the tenure of Adegoke has been marked by dedication, vision, commitment, creativity which has led to great transformation dotted with unwavering commitment to excellence and unprecedented growth.

Also, the Commissioner for Education, Dipo Eluwole, noted that the college has recorded notable strides in infrastructure development, academic standards, and institutional partnerships during the tenure of Adegoke.

Basiru congratulates Adeleke at 65, states why he wants to unseat Osun governor

The Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru governorship campaign team on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has congratulated the governor of Osun state, Sen. Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke, as he clocked 65.

A statement on behalf of the SRJ Campaign Team by Prof Aderemi Ajala in Osogbo, the Osun state capital, sends heartfelt wishes to the Ede-born politician.

According to the statement, “we want to join the good people of Osun State to celebrate our governor and brother, His Excellency, Sen. Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke, as he clocks 65. For us, we nurse no hatred against him, especially as he celebrates his birthday. So we congratulate him. The politics we are all involved in are for the betterment of our state.

“Being a knowledgeable people and apart from the fact that our principal is a lawyer by profession who adheres to the tenets of democracy, we don’t see politics as a do-or-die affair. When Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke defeated us in the last election, we respected the people’s wish.

“While we salute him on his birthday, we like to remind him that Sen. Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, Ph.D, is contesting to unseat him because of the obvious lapses he has noticed in the current administration in our dear state. The governance of our dear state cannot continue to be entrusted to the hands of someone like Governor Adeleke. We need a governor with ideas and who is surrounded by development-driven individuals. He cannot continue to use a few days in Osun and the other remaining days outside. We would have pardoned his frequent travels if he had capable hands to leave the administration with, but no. We have, together with our principal, consulted widely, and that is why he has thrown his hat into the ring. He wants to salvage the plight of our people.

“One does not need anyone to say it to know that Osun’s agricultural sector is almost dead. Nothing seems to be working under the current administration. No single company has been established or opened under this current tenure. Tourism in Osun is at its lowest patronage.

“Our educational sector has nosedived. What do we expect when teachers are sacked and not replaced? The health sector is nothing to write home about. The money accrued to the state in the last 30 months has been spent recklessly. The state government should publicly come out to tell the people how their funds are spent.

“A good leader doesn’t take the people to where they want, he takes them to where they ought to be. Our state is fast losing the gains of the past. So while we wish him all the best life can offer, we like to remind him that Sen. Basiru is contesting to unseat him. And we know the outgoing governor would be proud of his predecessor when he takes over from him in 2026,” the statement added.

Ademola Adeleke is Osun’s best governor ever – Davido claims

Grammy-nominated singer Davido has described his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, as the best governor the state has ever had.

Speaking on the Culture Knock Out podcast hosted by Chris and Baloo, Davido expressed deep admiration for Adeleke’s leadership, noting that despite early criticism and being underestimated due to his well-known love for dancing, the governor has proven himself to be highly effective.

Davido said his uncle’s journey is a lesson in not judging people by appearances or hobbies, adding that many never expected Adeleke, the last born in his father’s family to occupy a public office, let alone excel in it.

According to him, Adeleke has surpassed all expectations and delivered impressive results as governor.

He said: “My uncle, the Dancing Governor is good vibes. He has an amazing story, he is the last born of my dad’s family. They [Osun people] never believed that he would become a governor.

“He is a real example of, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’; just because somebody likes to dance and have a good time, it doesn’t mean when it is time to work, he won’t. Now, he’s been the best Governor that they’ve ever had.”

Adeleke, House of Assembly get seven-day ultimatum to sign bill on rent

The Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN) yesterday issued a seven-day ultimatum to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and the House of Assembly to sign into law, a bill to tackle exploitation by landlords and house agents concerning rent.

The Speaker of YAN, Hammed Fatomi, addressing reporters at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents’ Chapel, Osun State, lamented over the unchecked activities of landlords and house agents, noting that they were making life unbearable for residents.

According to him, ‘’we are speaking with one voice to end the unchecked exploitation in the housing sector that continues to plague the people of Osun State.

“Our cities and towns have become a hotbed for fraudulent and exploitative practices by house agents and landlords, who operate freely without regulation.

‘’Students, job seekers, newly- employed civil servants, newly-weds and young professionals narrate stories that are heart breaking over the activities of these greedy and dubious agents and landlords.”

Fatomi lamented that government had not taken any action to curb the activities of the agents and landlords.

The body demanded for immediate implementation, the Agency Regulatory Bill passed by the assembly, constitution of a regulatory body to oversee house agents’ and landlords’ activities in Osun State.

“We are appealing to Osun State Government to treat this matter within seven days with the urgency it deserves. We had previously scheduled a peaceful protest, but we postponed that protest in the light of the political tension that surrounds the councils.”

  • Adeleke dismisses APC failed defection claim

Adeleke dismisses APC failed defection claim

Osun State governor, Ademola Adeleke, has dismissed claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state that he contemplated defect to the party from his base in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The spokesperson to the governor, Olawale Rasheed, said there was never a time, past or present, when Adeleke negotiated or considered defection from the PDP.

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has said the governor attempted to defect to its fold but failed due to the condition he was given by the APC national leadership.

The party subsequently demanded a retraction of the claim by the governor at a meeting where he told some of the stakeholders of the ruling PDP in Osogbo, Osun State that he was not contemplating leaving the party.

An earlier statement signed by APC’s Director of Media, Mr. Kola Olabisi, had also recalled that Adeleke told an assembly of some of the stakeholders of the PDP at the Governor’s Office last Thursday that he was not planning to leave his current party either now or in the near future.

The governor tagged the rumour about his imminent defection into the APC as “fake news emanating from those intimidated by extraordinary performance in state leadership.”

But in its reaction, the Osun APC said, “We wonder why Governor Adeleke could not be truthful for once by confessing to the state PDP stakeholders comprising former state Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Dr Olu Alabi, Professor Wale Oladipo, Hon Akanni Olohunwa, Mr Sunday Bisi, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, Rt. Hon Lasun Yusuf among others that his desperate attempts to defect into the potent opposition APC were unsuccessful.

“The plight of Governor Adeleke with reference to his bungled attempts to defect into the APC could be likened to a promiscuous housewife who thinks that her illicit act being perpetrated in secrecy is not known to her neighbours.

“If not so many people were not privy to how some governors in the Southwest geo-political zone and some notable millionaire industrialists were using the dead of the night to package Governor Adeleke for the failed defection exercise, his begging visit to Chief Bisi Akande in his Ibadan, Oyo State residence, is still fresh in the memory of the right-thinking members of the society.

“We wonder why Governor Adeleke failed to reveal to the PDP stakeholders that the condition given to him by the leadership of the ruling party at the national level was that he would have to queue up and that he could not be given an automatic ticket for the governorship election under the APC.”

Insisting Adeleke never planned defection out of PDP, Olawale, in a statement, said after defeating an incumbent in 2022, the governor has continued to deliver the dividends of democracy, earning recognition from local, national, and international organisations, including federal agencies.

He said: “With such a record, he has no need to defect to secure victory in 2026. The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) must be hallucinating with its claim of a failed defection bid. At no time, past or present, has Governor Ademola Adeleke negotiated or considered defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“In over two years of governance, the Governor has not attended any meeting where defection was discussed or considered. Such an idea has never been and will never be on the table. A performing Governor who has achieved in under three years what the APC could not deliver in twelve, and who enjoys overwhelming support from the people, has no need for a party widely criticized and rejected in Osun due to its past failures and current disarray.

“With over 80 per cent job approval, and with visible impact across all sectors and regions of the state, Governor Adeleke was recently endorsed for a second term by Osun workers on Workers’ Day. He has no reason to join a party plagued by internal strife and leadership crises.

“We view the APC’s recent claim as a diversionary tactic aimed at masking its internal troubles. The party is reeling from self-inflicted damage, with its own members now exposing internal secrets that reflect a legacy of poor governance, divisive politics, and anti-people policies.”

He added that APC was deeply rattled by the support Adeleke has received from workers and citizens across the state.

“Let it be put on record: Governor Adeleke’s focus remains on protecting Osun State from desperate politicians determined to destabilise the state in their bid for power. Governor Adeleke has no regrets in defeating those bent on creating anarchy. His administration will continue to prioritise stability, development, and good governance.

“We urge the Osun APC to focus on its internal implosion and face its reality. Governor Adeleke remains committed to the PDP, the platform that is lifting Osun to new heights of progress,” the statement added.

Adeleke, Odu’a Investment partner on food security, jobs

Osun State Government  and Odu’a Investment Company Limited (OICL) have partnered on agriculture practices to enhance food security in southwest states.

OICL has requested Osun State Government to allocate agricultural land to it in the state to drive economic prosperity, disclosing that the company currently has a total agricultural landbank of 30,000 hectares across Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo and Oyo States.

Speaking at Governor’s office, Abere, Osun Stae, Group Chairman,  Odu’a Investment Company Limited (OICL), Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, explained that “the company owned collectively by the six Southwest States, remains committed to its mandate of driving economic prosperity for our shareholder states through strategic investments and partnerships.

“We are here today to reaffirm our strong partnership with the Government and people of Osun State and to seek deeper collaboration in two critical sectors that are vital to both the State’s and the region’s development agenda; Mining and Agriculture.

“In mining, to actualize our planned investments, we have recently incorporated a Special Purpose Company, SouthWest Resources Limited (SWRL) and we require your gracious intervention in facilitating access to mining licenses, consents, and the necessary government support.

“In agriculture, we recognise Osun State’s rich agrarian potential. OICL is keen to drive commercial agricultural initiatives through strategic investments in value-chain developments, ranging from crop production to processing and export.

“To this end, we humbly seek Your Excellency’s support in the allocation of portions of the State’s agricultural land bank for use by Odua’s agribusiness ventures. We envision projects that will boost food security, promote agro-industrialization, empower local farmers, and significantly contribute to rural development.”

He said: “We will take necessary action for Osun to take her rightful place in terms of equity participation among others.”

  • May Day: Osun labour union splits over NLC’s endorsement of Adeleke for second term

May Day: Osun labour union splits over NLC’s endorsement of Adeleke for second term

The 2025 Workers’ Day celebration in Osun State was marred by division within the labour movement, as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and a faction of local government workers held parallel events on Thursday, sparked by the endorsement of Governor Ademola Adeleke for a second term.

The NLC, led by Comrade Chris Arapasopo, hosted its Workers’ Day rally at Fakunle Unity School, near the Osogbo Township Stadium, where Governor Adeleke was publicly endorsed for re-election. The endorsement was a major highlight of the celebration, which had been scheduled specifically for May 1st to coincide with the annual Labour Day.

However, in a show of dissent, another group, operating under the banner of The Concerned Association of Local Government Workers—a faction of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE)—held a separate May Day celebration in Olorunda Local Government Area, also in Osogbo.

Speaking to members of the dissident faction, Comrade Adedayo Adekunle criticised the NLC’s action, accusing its leadership of partisanship.

“If you are a union leader, you are supposed to be neutral,” he said. “Even the politicians have not declared their candidate for a second term, but civil servants went ahead and did so. The money given to them is working—they are collecting something on our behalf. Their paymaster is now dictating for them.”

The split highlights growing tensions within the labour movement in Osun State, as debates continue over the role of unions in political endorsements and the autonomy of workers’ organisations.

“We don’t belong to any political party, we should only support any party that represents the interests of our people.

“To us as a unionist, it is a very big opportunity for us to make a case for better things for our people. When there is competition, there will be better things for our people.”
