    Rumpus in Osun community over refusal of Adeleke to sack monarch

    There is rumpus in Ekosin community in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State after Governor Ademola Adeleke failed to sack the monarch from the throne after issuing White Paper.

    The Nation recalled that Adeleke during his inauguration suspended about 30 traditional rulers hinging the suspension on faulty appointment process by last administration. Meanwhile, Adeleke after reviewing all the processes, he sacked three of the monarchs.

    Subsequently, youths of the community with a ruling house stormed Osun Government Secretariat to protest against the appointed monarch, Elekosin of Ekosin, Oba Kasali Olagunju. In a protested letter delivered to Adeleke and jointly signed by the Head of Nyanbilolu Ruling house, Prince Bowofola Abraham, its Secretary, Prince Lateef Sulaimon stated that kicked against the appointment.

    He stated that the chieftaincy declaration of 1956 was not used at all to appoint the new king and appealed to Adeleke to save the town from any form of violence and restore stability.

    Meanwhile, a statement by the kingmakers of the community, Chief Micheal Adepoju, Azeez Egbebi, Muritale Adeleke and Ayoku Nejeemdeen through their lawyer, Yemi Abiona opposed to the Nyanbilolu Ruling house, stating that Oba Olagunju was validly nominated and appointed.

    Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued 24 hours ultimatum to the residents of Ifon and Ilobu to submit their arms and ammunition at the nearest police station and security formation.

    Communal clash broke out between the two communities earlier this week, resulting in loss of life and property.

    Adeleke, through the Commissioner of Information, Kolapo Alimi, said after security meeting with stakeholders from Ilobu, Ifon, Erin and Okanla, they agreed on four resolutions.

    Said he: “Any person or group of persons in possession of firearms and ammunition should surrender such ammunition within 24 hours from today, February 1, to the nearest police or security formations.

    “The police command has been mandated to invite for interrogation, those who made themselves available as chiefs or custodians of the disputed areas.

    “A 16-man resolution committee has been established by the state government to sit and work out an amicable way(s) of settling the issues at stake.”

    The governor said the 6pm to 6 am curfew earlier imposed still remained, adding that security personnel comprising the Army, Police and Civil Defence were to remain where they were, to ensure peace in the communities.

    Heavy security as Court remands Adeleke’s associate over murder charge

    There was heavy security at the premises of the Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, on Thursday, February 1, as Olalekan Oyeyemi (Emir), an associate of Governor Ademola Adeleke, was arraigned for the murder of four residents of the state and possession of firearms.

    Oyeyemi, who was appointed by Adeleke as a member of the Disciplinary Committee for the Osun State Public Transportation System, was arrested on September 13, 2023, on charges of murder and possession of firearms.

    Before Justice Ayoola Emmanuel, Oyeyemi faced 11 counts, including murder, possession of firearms, and arson of a vehicle.

    The Inspector General of Police (IGP) prosecutor, Umar Alli, requested the court to substitute the previous charges filed on October 16, 2023, with a fresh charge dated January 31, 2023.

    The new charge alleges that Oyeyemi unlawfully possessed firearms and committed the murders of Oyewale Sharif, Muraina Olayiwole, Tope, and Tajudeen Rabiu.

    Meanwhile, the charge sheet with number FHC/05/84C/2023 was not read to Oyeyemi as his counsel, Edmund Biriomoni challenged the jurisdiction of the court to entertain the case arguing that the court cannot take the plea of the defendant.

    Alli opposed the objection by the defendant’s counsel, saying, Section 397(2) and 377 part 37, stated that objections can be raised after the plea has been taken. 

    The presiding Judge, Justice Emmanuel ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ife Correctional Facility and adjourned the matter to March 5th, 2024 to entertain a formal application to challenge jurisdiction.

    Adeleke reiterates commitment to grassroots development

    Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun, on  Thursday, reiterated his  administration’s commitment to the well-being of people at the grassroots in the state.

    Adeleke said this in Osogbo at the presentation of cheques to some communities to execute projects that would directly impact the lives of the people in the areas.

    The governor, represented by Alhaji Ayobami Ola-Oluwa, Commissioner for Rural Development and Community Affairs, also said that his administration was resolved to drive development and growth in rural communities in the state.

    He said that the latest intervention would go a long way in addressing the needs of the people at the grassroots.

    Adeleke further enjoined the beneficiaries on proper maintenance and security of the projects sited in their communities

    “The essence of community contributions is to ensure maintenance of the projects by communities; you must ensure that you maintain them.

    “Once you receive the cheque, I urge you to begin work immediately as we have plans to commission some of the projects by March,” he said.

    Also speaking, Alhaji Nurudeen Emiloju, Special Adviser to Governor Adeleke on Community and Social Development, urged the communities to reciprocate the good gesture of the administration by maintaining projects in their areas.

    Emiloju said that the intervention was to make lives more refreshing for the people.

    He also tasked benefiting communities to use the money received for projects without any delay.

    “We all know the situation of the country, and so, I want to urge communities not waste time in procuring materials needed before price increase.

    “This agency does not pay variation on projects, and no matter what happens, the project for which money is received must be executed.

    “So, I urge us to go home from here and get whatever is needed and again, we encourage benefiting communities to use bank transfers in paying for materials or services and not physical withdrawal of cash.

    “We will not entertain stories of any sort aside from the successful execution of projects that money is being received for now.

    “Governor Adeleke wants to touch lives in various communities and we must not fail him.”

    Earlier, Mrs Abosede, General Manager, Osun Community and Social Development Agency (OSCDA) applauded the governor for showing interest in the development at the grassroot.

    Abosede urged beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity by securing and keeping projects in their area in good working conditions. (NAN)

    Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has vowed to punish those behind the resurgence of violence in Ifon/Ilobu communities.

    He made this known in an ongoing virtual security meeting yesterday, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.

    Governor Adeleke said those who ignited the attacks again would be rounded up and arraigned for breaching peace.

    Violent clashes were reignited in both communities on Monday.

    It was learnt that three persons have died since the clashes started again in both communities.

    “I hosted a virtual security meeting last night. A physical meeting is now ongoing. We will not spare sponsors of this dastardly act.

    “Any traditional ruler found to be fanning embers of violence will be removed from office. Requisite intelligence is being gathered on the extent of culpability of prominent leaders from the two areas.

    “Since yesterday, I have issued relevant directives, which are being implemented to calm the situation. All through the night, security teams have begun de-escalation operations.

    “We have dispatched security teams and further measures will soon be announced,” the governor, who is attending a national minimum wage meeting at the State House, Abuja noted.

    “This time, those involved will pay the price in line with the law of the land,” the governor said.

    Governor Adeleke has imposed 6pm to 6am curfew on the communities.

    Police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola confirmed that “two persons lost their lives in the incident. Their bodies have been deposited in the mortuary of UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital.

    “Mr. Mojeed Oyewumi Alani and one other, who were arrested with weapons and charms by the police, have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation.”

    Governor Ademola Adeleke has threatened to depose any monarch fuelling communal clash between Ifon and Ilobu communities in Osun State after the resurgence of crisis with two persons confirmed dead. 

    The Nation reports that Ifon (Orolu Council) and Ilobu (Irepodun council) renewed hostility on Monday after the communal clash extended to Oyo State with their indigenes brandishing weapons. 

    Adeleke, after a security meeting on Tuesday with the heads of security agencies and stakeholders in Ifon and Ilobu communities, said: “Any traditional ruler found to be fanning embers of violence will be removed from office. Requisite intelligence is being gathered on the extent of culpability of prominent leaders from the two areas.”

    He also imposed a 6pm to 6am curfew on the warring communities. 

    A statement by Commissioner of Information, Kolapo Alimi stated: “A contingent of all security personnel, comprising the Army, Police, Civil Defence, be deployed to the warring communities with immediate effect.”

    The spokesperson of Osun State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola confirmed “two persons lost their lives to the incident and the corpses have been deposited in the mortuary at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital. 

    “Meanwhile one Mojeed Oyewumi Alani ‘M’ and one other who were arrested with weapons and criminal charms by Police operatives for their role in the communal clash have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation.”

    Governor Ademola Adeleke has tendered an apology to the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ), Ogun State Council over harassment of its union secretary and member by security operatives.

    The Nation reports that the Ogun council of NUJ demanded an apology from the Osun governor over the harassment of Bunmi Adigun and the union secretary by his operative at the 66th birthday celebration of Abepa of Joga-Orile and the conferment of chieftaincy title on Adeleke.

    Meanwhile, a statement by Adeleke through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed tendered an unreserved apology to the Ogun chapter of NUJ over the unruly conduct of security operatives at the event.

    According to him, “I apologize to the Ogun State Secretary of the NUJ and any other journalists who may have been affected by the incident. However, we want to put it on record that several dignitaries attended the event with several security personnel from various sections and departments.

    “The officials shown in the video do not belong to the convoy of the Osun State Governor. While an internal investigation has been conducted, Governor Adeleke’s team, especially the security apparatus, operates strict guidelines to ensure full respect not just for journalists on their legitimate assignments but also for members of the public in the discharge of their duties. We apologize to the Ogun State Council Secretary and assure the NUJ locally and nationally that such incident will not reoccur.”

    Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress(APC) through its chairman, Tajudeen Lawal berated Adeleke over the harassment as he tasked the Inspector General of Police to investigate the matter.

    He said, “The brutish action of the Adeleke security operatives was in the fulfillment of an adage that says one’s character is like a smoke which cannot be hidden. The attack on the journalists by the Adeleke security operatives was sadistic and wicked which should be condemned by all the right-thinking members of the society. It is incumbent on the Inspector-General of Police(IGP) to investigate the needless and brutal attack on the innocent journalist and the cameramen who were rough handled and attacked thereby subjecting the image of the police into disrepute.”

    Ogun NUJ demands apology from Adeleke over assault of journalist by security aides

    The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has denounced the attack on Bunmi Adigun, a reporter for Ogun State Television, and the union secretary by a few security aides of Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke.

    Adigun was allegedly attacked by the security guards while carrying out his official duties on Friday at the 66th birthday celebration of Oba Adeyemi Adekeye, the Abepa of Joga-Orile and the monarch’s chieftaincy title conferment on Adeleke.

    “Though the Governor was amiable but all the security details were unruly. They started misbehaving anyhow immediately after the governor arrived, pushing and harassing every journalist, even those who came with other special guests from Osun State,” Adigun said while recounting his experience.

    “They pushed my cameraman and other cameramen, I thought that was enough until they got to where we were standing, I was harassed, embarrassed, and they nearly tore my clothes.”

    The state chairman of the union, Wale Olanrewaju, in a statement on Saturday, described the attack as unjustified and an affront to press freedom.

    The statement partly reads: “This reckless and reprehensible behaviour towards a member of the press, who was simply carrying out his professional duties, is utterly unacceptable and cannot be tolerated in a democratic society, granted that any form of assault on a journalist is an affront on the fundamental principles of press freedom and the right of citizens to access accurate and unbiased information.

    Ismail Omipidan, spokesman for the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, yesterday tackled Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke over operation of mining activities in the state.

    Omipidan flayed Adeleke over claims that Oyetola (ex-governor) diverted accruing dividends from Segilola Mining Firm, challenging the governor for evidence.

    The Nation reports that Adeleke’s team led by his Chief of Staff, Kazeem Akinleye, while meeting the team of Segilola Company, alleged that under the past administration, shareholding with the firm was shrouded in secrecy and largely unvalidated.

    A statement by Omipidan said Adeleke’s administration is built on media gimmicks.
