“I am aware of the efforts being made for the release of the remaining Chibok girls as well as the recently (abducted) Dapchi girls.

“It is my sincere hope that the efforts will yield positive results.”

The wife of the President said that the abductions had further exposed the long-standing evil perpetrated against women in the society.

Mrs. Buhari called on stakeholders, especially the media, to stand against the “disturbing issue’’.

”It is a disturbing issue for which we must put heads together, pray, speak out, show concern and ensure that the situation comes an end.’’

She called on Nigerians, especially the media, to join the campaign against all forms of abduction and maltreatment of the Nigerian woman.

Mrs Buhari said it was unfortunate that celebration of the 2018 International Women’s Day came with pains and agony following the abduction of the Dapchi schoolgirls.

She also expressed concern over the use of young girls by insurgents to carry out suicide bombing.

She, however, congratulated Nigerian women for successfully marking the Day and prayed for greater opportunities for the Nigerian woman.

The wife of the President also prayed for women to have equal opportunities in governance as their male counterparts.

The wife of the Vice-President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, said the 2018 event came in a very happy and worst situation, considering the progress made by Nigerian team at the winter Olympic as well as the abduction of the Dapchi girls.

Wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari has charged perpetrators of abductions and various harmful practices against women and girls to stop forthwith.

She was speaking during an event to mark the 2018 International Women’s Day, on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the National Center for Women Development, Abuja.

Mrs. Buhari, in a statement by her Director of Information, Suilaman Haruna, observed that for Nigeria, the day must be marked with a difference considering the sad incidence of the abduction of girls, especially the case of Chibok and Dapchi, which must take the national spotlight.

“As a mother, I share the sorrow and agony of the parents at this time, it is my sincere hope that efforts by government will soon lead to their release.” She said.

She introduced a local theme tagged “Leave our daughters alone” which she said, is a strong call for the end of abductions, charging the media to own the campaign and spread the message.

She also charged wives of the Governors to propagate the campaign in their various states, stating that the message must echo through all corners of Nigeria and be on everyone’s lips.

“Leave our daughters alone, leave our daughters alone, leave our daughters alone” she charged.

Speaking earlier, wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, while congratulating women as they celebrate the special day, said it is sad that Nigerian women were witnessing the worst of times because of many negative things that are happening.

She however noted that at the same time they are also witnessing the best of times in many respects.

This, she said, is because there are many good stories happening around women.

Director-General of the National Center for Women Development, Barrister Mary Ekpere-Eta, said this year, there was an unprecedented global movement for women’s rights, equality and justice.

She said sexual harassment, violence and discrimination against women has captured public discourse, propelled by a rising determination for change, which she noted were instrumental to the declaration by the Wife of the President on the harmful practices affecting women and girls in Nigeria.

She drew attention to the plight of rural women, who despite their hard work lack basic infrastructure and services, decent work and social protection, and are left more vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

She called for urgent action to reverse this trend and ensure better life for the rural women.

Goodwill messages were delivered by UNICEF, UN Women, UNFPA and a host of others.

Highlight of the event was an exhibition of women’s business products.

The President’s wife, Mohammed and other eminent personalities spoke yesterday at the 6th graduation of 100 beneficiaries of ESI/Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Entrepreneurial and Skills’ Acquisition in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The theme of the event was: “Home finishing skills: a pathway to empowerment and sustainable livelihood.”

The graduation for youths drawn from the nine states of the Niger Delta, attracted Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; his Niger Delta Affairs counterpart Pastor Usani Usani and Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside, who is also the Chairman, Board of Trustees of ESI.

Mrs. Yakubu-Dogara said: “The wife of the President is proud of you (Dame Judith) for all the laudable works you are doing.

“Madam, you had a dream and you pursued it, you followed it and it has come to fruition. All Nigerian women are proud of you.”

Mohammed, in his keynote address, urged the graduands to take advantage of the life-changing opportunities to secure a better life for themselves and their families as well as employ others.

He noted that the ESI was complementing the efforts of the government to empower Nigerians, particularly the youths, women and children.

Mohammed said: “Jobs are not created only when you advertise, neither are jobs created when it is white collar jobs.

“Before this government came in, the nation had 5 million of rice growers. Today, we have 12.2 million rice growers.

“So, that is an extra of more than 7 million jobs in the agric sector alone. This is not fiction, but facts and this was collaborated by the chairman of the Rice Growers Association a few days ago.

“Not only government create jobs. Every individual and NGO should help to create new jobs.””

Ekere described the graduation as a great milestone to transform the Niger Delta, stressing NDDC was re-writing the history of the Niger Delta through massive infrastructural development and empowerment of the people.

He noted that the partnership between NDDC and ESI showed what could be achieved while working together with the energies of the youths to be directed to productive ventures.

Peterside stated that giving youths handouts would not be sustainable, pointing out giving the young ones qualitative education and skills would ensure a brighter future.

He assured the NGO would continue to make Niger Deltans and other Nigerians proud.

Mrs. Amaechi added since 2008 when ESI started, it had provided various training programmes in vocational skills and entrepreneurial development, including capacity building to over 3,000 beneficiaries.
