I didn’t make any allegations against Aisha Buhari, says Misau

Controversial Senator, Isah Misau has denied making allegations against the person of Aisha Buhari, the wife of the President.

Misau was reported to have accused the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris of buying to Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) for Mrs. Buhari, an allegation the police described as baseless falsehood.

But the Senator, who had been in running battles with the IGP, Thursday took to social media to ‘clarify’ the situation.

He wrote: “For the avoidance of doubt, I did not make any allegations against the person of the highly revered wife of the President, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari.

“In addressing the committee, my comments referenced court documents filed in charge CR/345/17 against me at the Federal High Court by IGP Idris.

“IGP Idris leaked correspondence with Muhammadu Buhari, Chief of Staff (COS), Director National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), ADC, Aisha Buhari and Chief Principal Staff Officer (CPSO) of the President to the public in documents filed at the Federal High Court.

“Shocked to find documents and minutes of the President and top government officials carelessly paraded in public by the IGP in clear breach of official secrecy.

I query the motive behind such indiscretion given that the said documents have little or no bearing on the matter of malpractice.

“My submission to the committee was simply to call attention to how IGP Idris is unethically dropping named by filing secret documents in court.

“Again, I make it abundantly clear: IGP Idris submitted official documents mentioning names of respected personalities. Not me.

“I urge the press and public to be wary of any attempt to obfuscate the issues. Indeed, eternal vigilance is the price for freedom.”

We didn’t give Aisha Buhari car, says Police

The Nigeria Police Force has denied buying two Prado Jeeps for President Buhari’s wife, Aisha Buhari.

Senator Isah Misau when he appeared before the Senate Adhoc Committee alleged that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) gave Aisha Buhari the vehicles.

The police while making clarifications on the allegation noted that the car was only given to the Aide to Buhari’s Wife after a request was made.

The police also said the car was given to the convoy for security purposes.

On the claim that the IGP Manipulated his retirement age, the Police explained that the difference in the date was just 12 days adding that it was insignificant.

Reacting to the allegation in Abuja Thursday, the Force Spokesman, CSP Jimoh Moshood said: “It is pertinent to state that at no time did the Wife of the President and Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mrs Aishat Buhari requested directly or indirectly for vehicles for her use from the Inspector General of Police and no vehicle whether Jeep or SUV has ever been given for her personal use.

“To set the record straight and disabuse the minds of the public most especially those who must have read the story, that the Inspector General of Police is empowered by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and the Police Act and Regulations, precisely Section 215 (1)(a&b) and (2) “The Nigeria Police Force shall be under the command of the Inspector General Police“ and the Deployment and Control of the entire Operations of the Force including allocation of Police vehicles for operational use throughout the country shall be under the purview of the IGP.

“It is within the powers of the Inspector General of Police as stated above that when on the 17th January, 2017, SP Sani M Baba –Inna, the ADC “Wife of the President” Federal Republic of Nigeria requested for two vehicles for Police Personnel in the convoy of Wife of the President for convoy movement and security purposes.

Two Police Vehicles  (i) A Toyota Sienna Bus with Reg. No. NPF 2406D (ii) A Toyota Hiace Bus with Reg. No. NPF 3363D were approved by the Inspector General of Police to the ADC “Wife of the President” SP Sani M Baba –Inna for the purposes requested and not to the person of the Wife of the President or for her personal use as alleged by Misau.

“The Nigeria Police Force categorically wishes to state that all the allegations made by Misau against the Inspector General of Police and the Wife of the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria of buying two (2) Jeeps for the Wife of the Presidents as reported in some media are baseless, untrue and done in bad faith to misinform and mislead the Public.”

On IGP’s retirement age, Moshood described the allegation as Ill-motive.

Moshood while displaying the copy of the letter to Journalists said: “For avoidance of doubt, the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Force Secretary Office wrote the Chairman, Police Service Commission on the 18th of January, 2017 drawing the attention of the Commission to the observation on the current Staff List of Senior Police Officers whereby the date of birth of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Idris, was incorrectly stated as 3/01/1959 instead of the actual date 15/01/1959.

“All documents and records of the IGP has 15/01/1959 as his date of birth except the staff list Senior Police Officers and this is the reason why the approval of the Honourable Chairman, Police Service Commission for correction of the error was sought in this regard.

“The difference of dates between 3/01/1959 and 15/01/1959 is just 12 days which is very insignificant in 35 years that a public servant can be in service”, he said

The police also noted that the Senator refused to answer to the allegation levelled against the IGP.

Moshhod said: “The Public will note that Issa Hamma Misau deliberately refused to prove the allegations he previously levelled against the Inspector General of Police on the floor of the Senate for which he was invited by the Senate Ad-hoc Committee but instead brought up other falsehoods to distract the Committee and the members of the Public.

Moshood added that the IGP will not be distracted or deterred by mischievous people from carrying out his statutory responsibilities for the benefit of the entire Police Personnel and all Nigerians.

Aisha Buhari tasks women on participation in active politics

The wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, on Wednesday stressed the need for more women to show interest and participate in partisan politics.

Buhari made this assertion at a 2-day Nigeria Women Political Stakeholders Summit in Abuja with the theme: “Increasing the Participation of Women in  Governance process in Nigeria,” organised by the National Council of Women Societies ( NCWS ).

The wife of the president noted that the decline in participation of women in governance has led to poor national development in the country.

According to her, in spite of the good intention of this administration to actively engage women in governance, there has been an alarming decline of women participation.

Mrs Buhari, who was re‎presented by the former deputy governor of Plateau State, Dame Tallen, lamented the alarming decline in the statistics of women participation in governance, saying it would not augur well for national development.

“Since 1999 there has been an alarming decline in the statistics of women in governance, something has gone terribly wrong, and we women need to speak out and do something about it.

“We make up 50 per cent of this country’s population and we cannot continue to be sidelined in the decision making process of this country”.

Earlier, Gloria Shoda, President of NCWS, said that insensitivity of the government was responsible for most problems confronting women.

She opined that the recurring issues of women are not limited to poverty, unemployment, lack of access, lack of any social support system, inequality and the abysmal levels of women participation and representation in decision making in the political parties structures an in government.

Shoda added that the society has decided to fight for the thirty five percent affirmative action to help change the narratives of Nigeria’s politics.

She said that going forward the society would, henceforth, negotiate with and partner with any political party that would implement the 35 per cent affirmative action in filling it’s political party leadership positions.

“We will partner with parties that will respect the 35 per cent affirmative action in selection of candidates for the 2019 general elections, prioritise women issues in its manifestos, and implement the 35 per cent action in its appointments when it wins the elections”.

The chairman House of Representative ‎on Women Affairs and Social Development,  Mrs Stella Ugwu representing the Speaker of the House of representative, noted that the representation of women in the house was quite low.

According to her, in the house of representatives there are only 22 women out of the 360 members, which is not too impressive.

Aisha Buhari urges Govts to give priority to education of women, girls

The Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, on Tuesday called on government at all levels to give priority to education and empowerment of women and children.

Buhari made this call in Abuja at the International Sheroes Forum with the theme: “Advancing women’s roles in business leadership and governance.”

Buhari, who was represented by the Wife of the Nasarawa State Governor, Hajiya Salamatu Al-Makura, said that education is the foundation for empowerment of women and children to achieve gender equality.

“We need to come together by supporting and encouraging each other in creating positive impact by empowering women and girls.

“I believe education is the foundation for empowerment of women and children, especially the girl child.

“I wish to call on government at all level and Non Governmental Organisation to ensure that issues that has to do with the right of women and the less privileged empowerment is mainstreamed.

“We have to come together as partners to confront gender inequality.

“We need to work with government, Civil Society and private sector to address the underlying bias and social norms that permit women and girls to be treated as lesser breed than men and boys.

“We still have a long way to go in terms of enjoying a gender equal world; we also need to be vigilant against sliding back on progress already made,” she said.

She said that there can be a change through legislation by working on the design progressive laws and ensuring that the laws are effectively implemented in other to be truly successful in the goals of equality.

However, Ms. Comfort Lamptey United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, said that the conference needs relevant stakeholders to get the desired equality.

Lamptey, who was represented by Adji Ndiaye, Deputy Country Representative, said that women in Africa were grossly marginalised, stating that Nigeria has the lowest level of representation in Africa.

She said that the main objective of UN women was to close the gap of marginalisation, saying that in 2019 election women should invest in political participation.

Sen. Jewel Taylor, Vice Presidential Candidate, Liberia, said that women in Africa should create a national fund to assist in increasing women participation in politics.

“We can begin to raise funding to get women in national governance because that is the button line, we have to put our money where our mouths are.”

Reps probe deplorable condition of Aso Rock clinic

The House of Representatives on Thursday mandated its Committee on Healthcare Services to investigate the deplorable condition of the State House clinic and the alleged deductions of salaries and allowances of the clinic’s medical staff.

The resolution of the House followed the passage of a motion tabled by Hon. Henry Archibong, with the title: “Need to Investigate the Deplorable Condition of the State House Clinic and the Alleged Deductions of Salaries and Allowances of the Medical Staff.”

The lawmaker said the State House clinic was established to take care of the health needs of the President, the Vice-President, their family members and members of staff of the Presidential Villa.

Archibong noted that the clinic has, over the years, been receiving budgetary allocations to procure equipment to enable it function optimally.

He said: “Further notes that in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Appropriation Acts, the clinic was allocated the sums of N3.94 billion, N3.87 billion and N3.2 billion respectively, for upgrading and provision of necessary drugs and equipment.

“Observe that despite those huge budgetary allocations, the clinic lacks necessary facilities such as syringes, drugs and equipment needed for saving lives.

“Medical doctors working at the clinic have expressed concern over alleged illegal deductions from their salaries and allowances by the management since April 2017, without any official communication for the action.

“Aware that the wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari complained publicly during a stakeholder’s meeting on Reproductive, Maternal, Nutrition, Child Advocacy and Health and Nutrition (RMNCAHN) at the State House of her inability to access health care needs at the clinic when she took ill recently, but was rather advised by the health providers to fly out of country for treatment.

“Acknowledge that her refusal to heed the advice of the health providers and insisting on obtaining medical care in Nigeria saved the country millions of dollars in foreign exchange and was also an act of patriotism and selflessness worthy of commendation.”

The motion was adopted by members of the House without debate and the Green Chamber commended the President’s wife for her exemplary show of patriotism and selflessness.

  • Aisha Buhari, Shehu Sani: an allegorical exchange

Aisha Buhari, Shehu Sani: an allegorical exchange

NIGERIA was abuzz last week with the exchange between two enthusiastic allegorists, First Lady Aisha Buhari and Kaduna State senator Shehu Sani, both of whom revelled in animal metaphors to ventilate their political frustrations. Senator Sani drew first blood, deploying allegories to skewer his political enemies, chief among whom, the country will remember, is the Kaduna State governor, the feisty Nasir el-Rufai. Unverified reports suggest that Mallam el-Rufai might be interested in the presidency. Other than clever footwork, there has, however, been neither indication nor statement from him confirming that he is scheming for the coveted position.

No one of course suggests that Sen. Sani’s allegories were directed at the first lady. Indeed, if anything, the senator’s allegorical excursions were quite solicitous of the first lady’s anguished banishment from the centre of things in the presidency. It was clearly a cathartic exercise, more notable for its mocking tones than its literary devices or even its power to ventilate frustrations. The senator had begun wryly: “Prayer for the absent Lion King has waned. Until he’s back, then they will fall over each other to be on the front row of the palace temple. Now, the hyenas and the jackals are scheming and talking to each other in whispers; still doubting whether the Lion King will be back or not. Now, the Lion King is asleep and no other dares to confirm if he will wake up or not. It is the wish of the hyenas that the Lion King never wake up or come back so that they can be kings. It is the prayers of the weaker animals that the Lion King comes back to save the kingdom from the hyenas, the wolves and other predators.”

As disagreeable as Sen. Sani’s literary amenities appeared to be, especially the extended liberty he took with them, they undoubtedly resonated far beyond what a direct statement would have done. No simple and direct statement could have conveyed the same message with as much power, effectiveness and even subtlety. It did not seem that the senator feared to confront his enemies frontally; it was simply a case of fishing for words and terms, whether allegorical or anecdotal, that gave force and substance to the senator’s fiery loathing for his chief enemies. No description of President Muhammadu Buhari could have been as stimulating as calling him a ‘lion king’. And no words or terms could have delivered so much pejorative tour de force as effectively as describing his enemies as hyenas and jackals. What is more, by ascribing hideous and bilious motives to his opponents, including suggesting that they wished the president dead, the senator quite succinctly performed an allegorical masterstroke.

That masterstroke did not need any improvement. It wounded enough; and it was overreaching in ways that left nothing to the imagination. Yet, the senator was probably so effective in the use of allegories that the first lady not only embraced it, indeed found the literary device quite invigorating and entrancing, but also appropriated it and deployed it. She immediately responded to the senator’s message with a cryptic and even more definitive version of her own borrowed allegories, as if to lend greater and unquestioning credence to the senator’s message. Said Mrs Buhari: “God has answered the prayers of the weaker animals. The hyenas and the jackals will soon be sent out of the kingdom. We strongly believe in the prayers and support of the weaker animals. Long live the weaker animals, long live Nigeria.”

Mrs Buhari seemed to suggest, beyond the allegories, that her ailing husband was in fact recuperating faster than anyone might imagine. She sniffed at those who had moved on with their plans to inherit her husband’s figurative kingdom, and concluded rather eagerly that a clear-out of the president’s inner caucus was imminent. She gave no proof of her husband’s recovery, and perhaps needed not give anything. And she offered no corroboration for her sweeping categorisations, especially who the jackals and hyenas were, nor whether they were in tandem with Sen. Sani’s categorisation.

However, much more than anything else, she reinforced her initially controversial conclusions about the mystery cabal that is widely believed to have hijacked the president’s government. Had she been silent, she would have lost nothing, for Sen. Sani’s message was vigorous enough to achieve the purpose he designed for it. But by coming out to reinforce the senator’s message, and in the process remorselessly reiterating her view of the divisions that plague her husband’s presidency, Mrs Buhari illustrated her boldness, conviction, determination, and a sense of great filial responsibility to redirect her husband’s government without the surreptitiousness many thought was appropriate for the occasion.

It is now evident that Sen. Sani will fight Gov el-Rufai to the last. And Mrs Buhari, whom many thought had been chastened by the negative reactions to her outburst last year, will also fight on to the very last. Neither of the two will relent, nor surrender. If their opponents within and outside the presidency will not yield ground, both Mrs Buhari and Sen. Sani appear determined to equally and defiantly stand pat, regardless of the hesitations and bewilderment of the literarily fastidious and the politically cautious.

First Lady hints of power struggle

President Muhammadu Buhari is getting better and will soon be back, going by his wife Aisha’s statement yesterday in London.

The President’s wife last week travelled to London to be with her husband, who is undergoing treatment for an undisclosed ailment. She has also been carrying out other assignments.

President Buhari left the country on May 7 for another round of treatment. He spent more than 50 days during his first medical vacation in London.

On his return, he told the nation that he had never been that sick in his life adding that he underwent blood transfusion. But he did not disclose his ailment.

On her Facebook page yesterday, Mrs Buhari, in a response to the July 6 post by Senator Shehu Sani, expressed herself in a figurative manner, using the animal imagery like the senator did.

She wrote: “God has answered the prayers of the weaker animals. The hyenas and the jackals will soon be sent out of the kingdom.  We strongly believe in the prayers and support of the weaker animals.

“Long live the weaker animals. Long live Nigeria.”

Director of Press in Mrs Buhari’s office Mr. Suleiman Haruna, said yesterday that the post was on the president’s wife’s “verified Facebook page”.

As at 10:00 pm, about 257 people had made comments on the post, most of which were wishing President Buhari quick recovery.

Senator Sani (Kaduna Central) wrote on his Facebook page on July 6.

“Prayer for the absent Lion King has waned; until he’s back then they will fall over each other to be on the front row of the palace temple.

“Now the hyenas and the jackals are scheming and talking to each other in whispers; still doubting whether the Lion King will be back or not.

“Now the Lion King is asleep and no other dare to confirm if he will wake up or not. It’s the wish of the hyenas that the Lion King never wakes or comes back so that they can be kings. It’s the prayers of the weaker animals that the Lion King comes back to save the Kingdom from the hyenas, the wolves and other predators.”

The senator is believed to be referring to those who are scheming to become president in 2019, crisscrossing the country in moves to taking advantage of the president’s absence.

Some people who are holding political positions are also believed to be undermining the system to position themselves in the president’s absence.

The President’s wife also yesterday posted her photograph speaking at an event in London.

She wrote under the photograph: “Today I attended the Babatunde Osotimehin Memorial Lecture at County Hall, London.

“It was an honour to have spoken about his achievements at all levels and his commitment towards women and children all over the world.”

Osotimehin was the Executive Director of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) and a former minister of health, who died last month.
