Ondo Guber: Group tips Marindoti for Aiyedatiwa’s running mate

A pan-All Progressives Congress (APC) socio-political organisation- Social Rehabilitation Gruppe (SRG) has called on the party to back the aspiration of its National Convener, Dr. Marindoti Oludare,  to be running mate to Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa,  in the November 16 governorship election.

The SRG, in a statement by its Southwest Coordinator,  Prince Demola Obadofin, averred that contributions made toward the campaigns of President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election and to the triumph of Aiyedatiwa over forces plotting to impeach him as deputy governor last year, were overwhelming.

“While Dr. Charles Marindoti Oludare,  best known by his middle known, Marindoti, is a personality who believes in spending his resources to pursue the attainment of his people-oriented objectives and programmes, most of the other people in politics these days believe in siphoning public funds to pursue personal objectives.

“Recall that as a medic in the United States, Marindoti heard then presidential aspirant, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, express frustration with people maligning him on social media, on platforms that did not provide him with a right of reply, he got moved and took leave of absence from his workplace in the US, relocated to Nigeria to undertake intensive media campaigns for Tinubu, at no cost to anyone,” Obadofin said.

The SRG helmsman stressed that it is better for the governor to choose a young and vibrant person like Marindoti from the North District of the part of Akokoland that has never gotten that far, “because, the Central Zone, most likely Akure,  is expected to get the governor zoning next.

“If the governor chooses from the Central, that person might see himself as the next governor and start treating Mr. Governor as a lame duck governor leading to unbearable insubordination and legislative connivance that will make Mr. Governor’s tenure untenable.

“But if he chooses a young and vibrant person like Marindoti, he’ll be able to avoid the Ajasin vs Omoboriowo; Mimiko vs Olanusi ; Akeredolu vs Agoola, the debacle of their respective era, since the young medic is not a politician and doesn’t have a gubernatorial ambition,” Obadofin canvassed.

He added that Marindoti, an Oka-Akoko by nativity but who was born and bred in Akure, the state capital, also became concerned,  when some selfish politicians moved to impeach Aiyedatiwa as deputy governor, when his boss, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu,  was seriously sick and spent many months in a German hospital.

“Worried that Aiyedatiwa was not allowed to act as governor in the absence of his boss, and that Akeredolu was medically coerced as some political hawks were forging his signature to award contracts and siphon public funds, Marindoti wrote a strongly worded petition to the Attorney-General of the Federation, calling for his intervention.”

    • Court orders INEC, others to file responses

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has sought the transfer to the Akure Division of the Federal High Court a suit Senator Jimoh Ibrahim filed in the Abuja Division of the court against the nomination of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the party’s candidate for the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State.

The APC, in a letter dated May 12 and addressed to the Chief Judge of the court, argued that the court’s Akure Division is the appropriate venue for the determination of the case, which is challenging the outcome of its primary election conducted on April 20 in Akure.

In the letter written by one of its lawyers, Matthew Burkaa (SAN), the ruling party said its request was premised on Rule IV(8)(i) of the Federal High Court (Pre-Election) Practice Directions 2022.

It provides that: “All suits, wherein the cause of action arose in a judicial division and the relief seeks a declaration or to compel or restrain person(s), natural or legal within that judicial division, with no consequence outside it, shall be file, received or heard only within that judicial division.”

The APC noted that not only was the primary election, which is the subject of the suit, held in Ondo State, all the defendants have offices in Akure, the state capital.

“It is our view that the Akure Judicial Division is the appropriate and most convenient forum for the determination of this matter.

“We most humbly pray My Lord to transfer this matter to the Akure Judicial Division of the Federal High Court for the following reasons:

•Convenience of the parties, as the plaintiff and defendants are based in Akure and other towns in Ondo State.

    • There is a Federal High Court division located at Akure, with two courts (Court 1 and Court 2).

•We crave your Lordship’s indulgence to grant our application.”

Defendants in the suit are: the APC, Aiyedatiwa, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

At the mention of the case yesterday, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Chris Uche (SAN), told the court that he had received a memorandum of conditional appearance from APC’s lawyer.

Uche said he also received a memorandum of conditional appearance from INEC but had not received anything from Aiyedatiwa.

The lawyer said none of the defendants had filed a defence.

The lawyer to the APC, Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), acknowledged filing a memorandum of conditional appearance.

Oyetibo, who said his client was still within time to file its response to the suit, wondered why the plaintiff filed the suit in Abuja.

The lawyer informed the court about the letter written by his client for the transfer of the case to Akure.

He added that his client was awaiting the response of the court’s Chief Judge to the letter.

Aiyedatiwa’s lawyer, Bode Olanipekun (SAN), confirmed that he was aware of the APC letter.

He added that his client was also within time to respond to the suit.

INEC’s lawyer, Charles Edosomwan (SAN), who also confirmed being aware of the letter, said his client was still within time to react to the suit.

Responding, Uche argued that the writing of a letter by one of the defendants was unimportant because it was not before the court.

Justice Inyang Ekwo said the issue of whether or not a party in the case wrote a letter could not be discussed in the court since the letter was not before him.

The judge said he would prefer to focus on what was before his court, which is the suit the plaintiff filed.

He added: “Taking into consideration the time for the parties to file and respond, I will give you a return date and from there we will get further directive.”

The judge ordered the parties to file all necessary paper and adjourned till May 29 for the mention of the suit.

Ondo poll: Court orders Aiyedatiwa, others to file defence

A Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja yesterday ordered Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and others, to file their defence in a suit instituted by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, seeking to void the April 20 governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Justice Inyang Ekwo gave the directive after counsel for the APC, Tayo Oyetibo, informed the court that the party had written a letter to the Chief Judge of the FHC for the matter to be transferred to the Akure division.

Ibrahim sued APC, Aiyedatiwa and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INE) as 1st to 3rd defendants. He is praying the court to set aside the April 20 governorship primary that produced Aiyedatiwa as the party’s candidate.

Ibrahim also urged the court to declare that Aiyedatiwa is not the valid candidate by virtue of the party’s non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act (2022), and the party’s regulations and guidelines in the conduct of the poll.

He, therefore, sought an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the governor from parading himself as the APC’s governorship candidate for the November election.

Ibrahim also prayed the court for a mandatory injunction compelling INEC to delist the names of APC and Aiyedatiwa from the list of political parties and governorship candidates for the election. He also asked the court to strip the party and Aiyedatiwa ‘of all rights and appurtenant to political parties fielding candidates, and candidates at the said governorship election, except a fresh primary election I’s conducted and a candidate lawfully nominated’.

At the resumed hearing yesterday, Ibrahim’s lawyer, Chief Chris Uche, told the court that he received a memorandum of conditional appearance from APC’s lawyer. Uche said he also received a memorandum of conditional appearance from INEC but had not received any application from Aiyedatiwa.

The lawyer said besides all these, the defendants had not filed any defence in the suit

But Oyetibo confirmed filing a memorandum of conditional appearance, which was served on the plaintiff. He said since the plaintiff served on them their processes on May 7, he was still within time to respond.

The lawyer, who wondered why Ibrahim filed the suit in Abuja, told the court that a letter had been written to the Chief Judge, Justice Tsoho, seeking for the transfer of the matter to the Akure division. He said they are awaiting the CJ’s response.

Aiyedatiwa’s lawyer, Bode Olanipekun, said though they were served on May 9, they were still within time to respond. He therefore confirmed Oyetibo’s position on a letter to the CJ.

INEC’s lawyer Charlesi Edosanwan, who said he was still within time to file their response, said he was also aware of the APC’s letter to have the matter transferred.

But Uche said writing a letter was a non-issue as the letter was not before the court.

Justice Ekwo said the issue of the letter cannot be discussed in the court since the letter was not before him. He held that what was before him was what he was concerned about

He added: “What I am going to do, taking into consideration time for parties to file and respond, is to will give you a time of return date and from there, we will get further directive.”

Justice Ekwo also directed parties to file their applications and adjourned till May 29 for mention.

  • I am qualified to be Aiyedatiwa’s deputy, says Oludare

I am qualified to be Aiyedatiwa’s deputy, says Oludare

Philanthropist and medical practitioner, Dr. Charles Oludare, has described himself as qualified to become running mate to Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa ahead of the November governorship election.

Dr. Oludare, popularly called Márìndọ̀ti, said he should not be considered only because of his age, but based on his intellectual abilities and love for the people.

According to the doctor, experiences have equipped him with a profound understanding of both local needs and global healthcare strategies, as well as positioned him to support Governor Aiyedatiwa in multifaceted ways.

He promised to leverage on his international contacts and goodwill to attract varied international support for Aiyedatiwa’s programmes and projects.

“I believe I have a deep understanding of most of our problem, and I have the ability to communicate effectively which is integral to solving all of them. This is why I will consider myself eminently qualified to be a deputy governor than anyone else.

“I represent a different generation; a generation that accounts for over 70 per cent of Nigeria’s voting population, so I definitely bring a different perspective and different way of thinking to the table. Democracy is a game of numbers, you need to build consensus and the government needs to be able to convey its plans and ideas to the people in a way they can relate to.

“I believe I bring that unique relatability to the current government. I bring vitality and vigor, and a whole lot of ideas. Some we have to invent but most we just have to apply. There’s no need to re-invent the wheel when you can just put it on your wheelbarrow or car or suitcase and it works just as fine. I am an active listener, I am very smart and with impeccable problem solving skills. These and many more are things that the people of Ondo State can benefit if I so considered.

“I care about my people of Ondo State, I care about our elders, the people who raised me, the people that carried me when I couldn’t walk, sucked the mucus out of my nose when I couldn’t blow them myself. I love our people and I hate to see them suffer. If I’m considered for this post I promise that I will do my best and know no rest until they know no suffering.

Retain incumbent dep gov, Owo APC leaders urge Aiyedatiwa

Opinion leaders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Owo and its adjourning communities, in Ondo State, on Friday rose from an emergency meeting, with admonition to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to pick the incumbent deputy governor, Dr Olayide Adelami,  as his running mate.

Rising from a meeting in Owo, the spokesman for the leaders, Hon (Dr.) Adeyemi Olayemi, fondly called Koko, said the prevailing focus is on which senatorial zone to produce the next governor and that it has tacitly been conceded to the southern district.

Olayemi, a one-time Chief Whip of the Ondo State House of Assembly and currently the Owo Local Council Director-General for Lucky Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation Foot Soldiers Independent Council (LACO-FSIC), described as mischievous and selfish, the attempt to make Owo lose the deputy governor slot under Aiyedatiwa.

“One of our leaders in the APC from Owo has been going around canvassing for someone from Akure to become the running mate to Governor Aiyedatiwa in the November governorship election, without giving his crusade a deep reflection.

“To enlighten him, the main aspiration of the Akure people is to produce a governor after the South Senatorial District must have spent out its slot, and not to produce the next deputy governor.

“Akure had produced a deputy governor under Governor Olusegun Agagu of blessed memory,  in the person of Chief Omolade Oluwateru; Ikale area had earlier produced in Barrister Afolabi Iyantan while the late Chief Adebayo Adefarati was governor,  and Akokoland afterward produced two deputy governors under Governor Segun Mimiko in persons of Alhaji Alli Olanusi and Mr. Lasisi Oluboyo.

“Owo, a vast kingdom with intimidating voting strength, had never produced a deputy governor until now, and under the zoning arrangement, it will be unfair to make the area produce it for just a year,” Olayemi argued.

He similarly remarked that apart from the zoning issue, Governor Aiyedatiwa and Adelami, his deputy, make a perfect match in terms of harmonious work relationships, experience in public service, and dedication to duties.

Besides, he informed that the Owo meeting, in rising, counselled Senator Jimoh Ibrahim to back down from his relentless moves to frustrate the concerted effort of the APC to move with a united team in its ongoing governorship campaigns.

“If the distinguished Senator is trying to be a lonely voice in the wilderness by saying there was no primary election in the APC, is he saying the 1,015 party delegates drawn from 203 wards of the state at five delegates per ward that met in Akure in less than 24 hours after the April 20 primary election lied?

“He should accept the verdict, congratulate Governor Aiyedatiwa, and let us move on as a united force,” he urged.

  • Aiyedatiwa, Ajayi shaping up to epic showdown

Aiyedatiwa, Ajayi shaping up to epic showdown

Following the governorship primaries for the Ondo State election scheduled for November, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Agboola Ajayi, who is flying the flag of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), are going to lock horns. Correspondent OSAGIE OTABOR provides a preview of the contest, which will also feature five other smaller political parties.

In November, the electorate in Ondo State will decide who will lead them for the next four years. This followed the emergence of candidates from political parties in the state to beat the deadline by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). But it will likely be a two-horse race between two men already known to the people. It will be a choice of two men who served as deputies to the late former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

    Two-horse race:

The people will choose between the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Agboola Ajayi, and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, candidates of smaller political parties might play the spoiler game.

Ajayi and Aiyedatiwa are men who have many things in common. They are both from the Ese-Odo/Ilaje Federal Constituency. They both served as deputies to the late Akeredolu.

Ajayi served between 2017 and 2021, while Aiyedatiwa served between 2021 and 2023. They both survived the impeachment plot after falling out with their former boss. The move to impeach them was based on alleged traits of betrayal. They were perceived to be too ambitious to succeed their principal.

The November election would be Ajayi’s second attempt to secure the mandate of the people to govern the state. He failed as candidate of the ZLP; after coming a distant third in the race. Aiyedatiwa, on the other hand, was sworn in in December last year after the death of Akeredolu in Germany and this is his first attempt.

    PDP:

Ajayi emerged as the candidate of the PDP after defeating six other aspirants by polling 264 out of 621 votes. Before the primary, Ajayi had expressed confidence that he would win the primary with a wide margin. He told reporters in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on the morning of the primary that he went around to the 18 local government areas to convince the delegates why they should trust him to have the ability to rout the APC out of power.

The PDP candidate said: “I am very optimistic of winning today’s primary. I have told the delegates my vision and mission and they know my capabilities. They know I can make everybody happy.

“I have told them about my plans to develop infrastructure in the riverine communities. I assured them of plans to create jobs and make life meaningful for Ondo people.”

Ajayi is not a political neophyte. He is a veteran of several electoral contests in the state. But, he has been jumping from one party to the other to contest for various elective positions in the state. He contested and won as chairman of Ese-Odo Local Government, despite opposition from leaders of the then PDP.

He later won election into the House of Representatives on the party’s platform.

Before the 2016 governorship election in Ondo State, Ajayi left the PDP and joined the APC in time to emerge as deputy to the late Governor Akeredolu.

After falling out with the late governor, Ajayi returned to the PDP a few weeks before the primary for the 2020 governorship polls. He put up a good fight and came second at the end of the day.

But, he left the PDP once again in a bid to realise his ambition to govern the state. He joined the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) before the 2020 election and succeeded in securing its ticket. He came a distant third at the polls.

Before the 2023 general election, Ajayi returned to the PDP and contested for the party’s ticket for the Ondo South senatorial election. He defeated incumbent Senator Nicholas Tofowomo to emerge as the party’s candidate for the constituency. He lost to Senator Jimoh Ibrahim during the main election.

     APC:

Governor Aiyedatiwa emerged as the candidate of the APC after defeating 15 other aspirants in a fiercely contested primary. Some aspirants who kicked against his emergence described it as a rape of democracy. They alleged that the Ondo APC primary was fraught with several irregularities like the absence of electoral materials.

Unlike Ajayi, this is the first time Aiyedatiwa will be contesting an election as the candidate of a political party.

The governor served as commissioner representing Ondo State on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) between 2018 and 2019. In 2015, he failed in his bid to represent the Ese-Odo-Ilaje Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. For Governor Aiyedatiwa to win the forthcoming election at the expense of a political wizard, like Ajayi, he must rally all the contestants that lost in the APC primary and fully deploy the party’s machinery to his advantage.

Aside from the two major parties, other political parties that are fielding candidates for the election include the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Allied People’s Movement (APM), the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

    PRP:

For the PRP, Babatunde Francis Alli emerged as the party’s candidate through a consensus arrangement. His candidacy was affirmed and endorsed by party delegates.

Ali, in his speech, promised to make the party proud. He said he would focus on job creation and poverty elimination, by providing access to quality education and healthcare if elected as the next governor of Ondo State.

”Your unwavering support and belief in my ability to lead our great state to prosperity are truly humbling. As a result, I am committed to fulfilling this mandate with integrity, dedication and unwavering resolve in alliance with the principles that would guide our great party.

“It is time to rise above the challenges and work tirelessly to salvage our state from impoverishment and despair.”

    SDP:

For the SDP, Dr Segun Oyebolu was elected as its flag bearer after an indirect primary in which 64 delegates participated.

    APM:

Ogunfeyimi Isaac Kolawole emerged as the candidate of the APM through a consensus arrangement, which was affirmed by delegates from across the 18 local government areas.

    ADC:

A legal practitioner, Mr Myson Nejo, emerged as the candidate of the ADC after polling a total of 114,911 votes in a direct mode primary. His rival, Chief Dayo Falana, scored 9,651 votes.

The chairman of the ADC Governorship Primary Committee, Mr Eyiowuawi Abdulrazak, said six aspirants showed interest in the race but that two aspirants stepped down.

The ADC flag bearer who promised to ensure good governance urged the electorates to elect the best candidate to tackle challenges militating against the state.

“A democratic society like ours thrives on the rule of laws which includes respect for the laws of the land, implementation of the laws of our dear country and state in the business of governance without fear and favour and fundamentally, respect for the judicial process especially the decisions of the Courts.

“If elected as the Governor of Ondo State, we would prioritise adherence to the rule of law especially because the rule of law compliant attitude of any country is a factor that could either make or mar its economic prospects,” he promised.

“Quality primary and secondary education would be given priority in our administration if elected as governor. There is a need for quality primary and secondary education in Ondo State to equip our children and teenagers for the challenges of the ever-evolving and technology-driven world of the 21st Century cannot be over-emphasised.”

    NNPP:

The NNPP picked Oluwatosin Ayeni as its candidate.

In the coming days, the electioneering campaign will commence across the state. The major candidates, Aiyedatiwa of the APC and Ajayi of the PDP are expected to dominate the campaign. But, a third force may likely emerge from one of the smaller parties.
