Akume meets Benue monarchs on Tinubu’s directive for lasting peace

As part of fresh efforts to end the cycle of violence in Benue State, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has met with the two foremost traditional rulers following a presidential directive to constitute a strategic peace committee.

The meeting, held in Benue State, brought together the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty Orchivirigh Prof. James Ayatse, and the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, in what is seen as a significant step in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed push for enduring peace in Nigeria’s food basket.

Akume conveyed the President’s deep concerns over the latest wave of violence in the state, describing the attacks as “heartbreaking” and reiterating the Federal Government’s resolve to “end the senseless killings in the food basket of the nation and across the country.”

According to a statement on Saturday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Office of the SGF, Segun Imohiosen, Akume told the monarchs “we want to appeal to you to continue to stay vigilant so that miscreants do not infiltrate the communities. Whenever you observe a breach, do not resist in informing us. The President will never disappoint you”.

He emphasised that the inclusion of the Tor Tiv and the Och’Idoma in the peace process underscores the Tinubu administration’s recognition of the pivotal role traditional institutions play in conflict resolution, community dialogue, and grassroots peacebuilding.

The high-level engagement marks the beginning of a broader national effort to restore calm in Benue State, where inter-communal violence and criminal attacks have claimed scores of lives and displaced thousands in recent years.

The monarchs commended President Tinubu for his direct involvement in the matter and his recent visit to assess the situation firsthand.

They pledged their full cooperation with the peace initiative and called on all communities in the state to embrace dialogue and support the peace process once the committee is formally inaugurated.

The Tor Tiv and Och’Idoma also urged local stakeholders, youth leaders, and community groups to resist the temptation of reprisal and instead channel grievances through lawful and peaceful means.

The proposed strategic peace committee, which is to be led by Senator Akume, has commenced consultations immediately.

Its mandate includes investigating the root causes of persistent violence in the state, promoting inclusive dialogue among stakeholders, and recommending sustainable solutions for long-term reconciliation and security.

The peace initiative comes at a time of heightened national focus on rural insecurity, with the Tinubu administration moving to recalibrate its internal security response and integrate local leadership more directly into stabilization efforts.

Akume salutes Tinubu, vows to lead peace-building efforts in Benue

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his prompt and compassionate visit to Benue State in the wake of renewed violence, pledging to rally all critical stakeholders in a concerted effort to restore lasting peace in the state.

In a statement issued on Thursday by Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the SGF, Segun Imohiosen, Akume hailed the President’s decision to personally visit Benue, despite a demanding schedule, as “a courageous and commendable gesture,” demonstrating a clear commitment to ending the cycles of violence plaguing parts of the North Central state.

“The President’s visit was not just symbolic. It was a powerful signal to the people of Benue that their pains are not being ignored. Mr. President engaged in frank discussions with traditional rulers, political leaders, security operatives, and civil society actors in a town hall meeting aimed at charting a new course for peace and stability”, Senator Akume said.

Following the President’s visit, Senator Akume disclosed that he had been directed to coordinate the formation of a high-level committee of key Benue stakeholders to fast-track peace efforts and interface directly with President Tinubu at a forthcoming meeting in Abuja.

According to him, the committee will include former Governors of Benue State, the paramount traditional rulers, the Tor Tiv and the Och’Idoma, as well as the SGF himself and other notable stakeholders.

Their mandate is to develop a practical, inclusive, and lasting framework to end the bloodshed and communal hostilities that have plagued the state for years.

“This is a directive I take very seriously. I assure Mr. President and the people of Benue that I will work hand-in-hand with all critical stakeholders—local communities, civil society organisations, security agencies, and our revered traditional rulers—to build a roadmap for reconciliation and sustained peace”, the SGF stated.

Senator Akume, a former governor of Benue State, acknowledged the complex socio-political and ethnic dimensions of the state’s conflicts but maintained that solutions are within reach through honest dialogue, mutual understanding, and political will.

“Achieving sustainable peace requires a united effort. The time for finger-pointing is over. We must now focus on solutions, together,” he said.

The committee’s establishment is part of President Tinubu’s broader Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasises peace-building, national unity, and inclusive development.

The administration is prioritising security and reconciliation in conflict-prone areas, particularly in states like Benue, where herder-farmer clashes and communal tensions have led to devastating loss of life and livelihoods.

At the town hall meeting, the President assured the people of Benue that he would be “personally involved” in ensuring peace returns to their communities.

Senator Akume’s latest statement signals the beginning of a coordinated federal-state response mechanism anchored on stakeholder engagement, local ownership, and high-level political commitment.

The SGF concluded by urging all parties to rise above partisan divides and work together to restore the dignity and security of the people of Benue.

“Peace is not a gift; it is a responsibility,” Akume said. “We owe it to our children and future generations to end this cycle of violence once and for all.”

…calls for calm as Tinubu commences moves to end carnage

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has commiserated with the people of Yelewata and the entire Nyiev Council Ward in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State over the deadly attack that claimed several lives on June 13.

During an on-the-spot visit to assess the level of destruction, Senator Akume urged the people to remain calm and steadfast, assuring them that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is making concerted efforts to end the wave of violence in Guma and across the state.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Terrence Kuanum, the SGF expressed President Tinubu’s deep concern over the killings, stating that the federal government is committed to ensuring the protection of all citizens.

Akume regretted the delay in visiting the affected community, noting that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is already mobilising relief materials to support the victims.

He cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands, adding that security agencies have been tasked with improving surveillance and preventing further attacks.

A political leader in Nyiev, Hon. Mattew Mnyam, expressed appreciation for the SGF’s visit, saying it brought hope to a grieving community.

The District Head of Nyiev, Zaki Bernard Shawa, revealed that over 100 lives had been lost in the days leading up to the June 13 attack.

How we can truly immortalise June 12 heroes — Akume

As Nigeria marks 26 years of unbroken democratic rule, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has called on Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of June 12 heroes by remaining vigilant stewards of democracy.

“We can only immortalise them by ensuring that we guide and guard our democracy. That we work to bring development to Nigeria. Democracy without development is empty and is bound to fail,, Akume said in a welcome address at the Democracy Day public lecture held Thursday at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja

The SGF paid tribute to the sacrifices by countless Nigerians in the fight against military dictatorship, emphasising that the democratic freedoms enjoyed today were earned through blood, sacrifice, and resilience.

“Today’s celebration would not have been possible were it not for the commitment and determination of the ordinary Nigerian citizens who stood strong in the face of military oppression, brutality, and rights denial.

“The June 12 struggle was a watershed, as millions of our countrymen and women poured out on the streets from Lagos to Ilorin, Kaduna to Kano, Ibadan to Makurdi, Bauchi to Jos, Port Harcourt to Enugu,” he said.

He stressed tthe mass protests of the 1990s coalesced into a national movement that ultimately led to the democratic rebirth Nigeria celebrates today.

“We are here today because many fought. Many died. Many were brutalised. Many disappeared. Many lost limbs. Many were imprisoned. Many gave up all their resources and many never recovered. To all of them we owe a debt of gratitude,” he said solemnly.

Against the backdrop of growing political instability in parts of Africa, Akume said Nigeria’s commitment to democracy stood out as a beacon.

“At a period when many African countries are sliding back into military rule and dictatorship, Nigeria is powering forward in democratic rule. Even though we have not attained the democratic heights envisioned, we are confident that our path is straight and will lead us to our desired destination”, he observed.

The SGF commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his democratic credentials and bold reform agenda, describing him as “a leader who knows and is a foot soldier of democracy as well as a patriot to the core.

“As a key figure in Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, Bola Ahmed Tinubu indeed faced challenges and made sacrifices in his pursuit of democratic governance. His efforts contributed to the country’s transition to democracy and his commitment to democratic principles has been notable,” Akume noted.

He praised President Tinubu’s administration for embarking on an “unprecedented journey to re-engineer Nigeria” through economic revitalization, infrastructure development, and targeted reforms.

Benue killings: Akume not silent, just focuse don results, SGF’s aide counters Alia’s claim

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, is not silent about the spate of killings in Benue State, his aide, Terrence Kuanum, said yesterday.

He said the GGF, who is a former governor of the state, is focussed on problem-solving initiatives that would yield positive results.

Kuanum rejected what he described as Governor Hyacinth Alia’s attempt to manipulate public sentiment against him through “deliberate and unfortunate” insinuations in the media.

He said Rev. Alia’s remark on the television that Akume and his associates havd not spoken on the worsening insecurity in the Sankera axis of the state is not correct.

During the interview, the governor disclosed that he received a report from a state-appointed panel that allegedly indicted certain individuals based in Abuja for sponsoring the violence.

However, Kuanum, Special Adviser on Public Affairs in the SGF’s office, said in statement that the governor’s remarks were misguided and misleading.

He said: “If the Governor of Benue State has expected that the SGF would be seen in the media discussing the efforts he has been making in that regard, then,  it betrays either a lack of understanding of governmental administrative procedure, or he is deliberately and unfortunately seeking to manipulate public sentiments against the SGF.”

Kuanum said Akume has been “deeply involved” in the fight against insecurity, within and beyond the bounds of his constitutional responsibilities, adding that such interventions have been channeled appropriately through the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

He added: “As a member of the Federal Security Council, Governor Hyacinth Alia very well understands how the Federal Executive Council functions, and how it is through its channels of communication and administrative action, in which the SGF is centrally involved, that several security interventions have been made to Benue State.”

Kuanum also defended federal lawmakers from Benue State, who Rev. Alia labeled as “cronies” of Akume, noting their consistent efforts to spotlight Benue’s security crisis on the floor of the National Assembly.

He said: “Senators Titus Zam and Emmanuel Udende, as well as members of the House of Representatives from Benue State, have been most vociferous on the floor of the NASS in calling attention to issues of insecurity in Benue State.

“These efforts have resulted in motions that have gotten the attention and action of the Federal Executive Council.”

On the yet-to-be-released panel report, the Kuanum said the due process demands such documents be vetted and transformed into a White Paper before being considered an official government position.

He said since the governor has let the cat out of the bag before the administrative procedure, he should expose those indicted and forward their names to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Security Council.

Kuanum urged the governor Alia to adopt a more inclusive and transparent approach to combating insecurity by engaging local communities.

He said: “Such an approach will help to shape for His Excellency a consistent position regarding the crisis—such as whether it is foreign terrorists, Benue people themselves or whoever is responsible—thereby eradicating his seeming confusion as to who actually is responsible.”

‘Alia will expose those behind insecurity’

However, Rev. Fr.Alia’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kulas, said his Principal would exposed those  behind insecurity in the state.

He said as the Chief Security Officer of the state, the governor has better information on security more than anyone.

kulas said in a statement: “Governor Hyacinth Alia, known for his altruism, remained  very passionate about the defence and utmost care for his people, the people of Benue state.

“ He usually has sleepless nights using all legitimate approaches to handle the situation including the needed diplomacy.

“He cannot trade with the blood of the innocent people of the state, who are innocently murdered by soulless herders.

“His assertion that some politicians are complicit in certain violent activities is not baseless, rather, it reflects realities familiar to those who have closely followed the security challenges in the

“ Benue currently grapples with attacks from two distinct groups: (a) Foreign terrorist herders invading rural communities, and (b) Local bandits and gangsters, primarily active in the Sankera axis.

“It is within this context that the Governor emphasized that some of these local outlaws, particularly in Sankera, are being shielded and motivated by certain politicians based in Abuja.

“During his live appearance on the TV, the Governor made a clear distinction between the marauding terrorists’ attacks and the outlaws heinous activities in the state, particularly in the Sankera and Kwande axis.

“It is the outlaws at Sankera that he emphasized  are kept, and are often motivated for nefarious activities by some political leaders in Abuja.

“As far as the issue of insecurity bedeviling the state is concerned, Governor Hyacinth Alia has never shied from calling a spade a spade, hence his declaration that the kind of fulanis attacking the state are foreigners. Recall that when he made this assertion, it attracted criticism from predictable quarters, but it was subsequently validated by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ).

“Addressing the press in Abuja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, affirmed that intelligence gathered by the military revealed that many of the attackers are indeed non-Nigerians. He was specific that foreign herders are behind attacks on Benue and Plateau communities.

“As the Chief Security officer of the state, the Governor is often privy to intelligence that must not always be divulged to the public. Let us not forget that he clearly told the world that he is privy to the preliminary report from the Judicial Commission of Inquiry for the unrest at Zaki-Biam.

“Therefore, let everyone remain calm. The report will surely be out and the public will be able to know the findings.”

Northern group rejects calls for Akume’s suspension

A group, ‘The Northern Bridge Builders’ Forum (NBBF), has flayed those calling for the suspension of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume over the allegations of fraud against one of his aides.

The forum, in a statement in Abuja, rejected the campaign of calumny by politically-motivated groups over what it described as “completely unfounded allegations.”

The statement, signed by its Convener, Senator Joel Ikenya, and Secretary, Gowon Emmanuel, noted that the alleged fraud did not take place in the SGF’s office.

According to the group, the person, who allegedly perpetrated the fraud, is actually neither his aide nor a staff of the SGF’s office.

The forum, which comprises distinguished personalities from diverse fields from across the 19 northern states, said it found the apparently politically-motivated calls worrisome, urging the public to discountenance it.

According to the group, its diverse membership, irrespective of tribe and religion, underscores the unity, progress and collective visions that bind the North and Nigeria together.

NBBF said: “The forum woke up to notice a flurry of publications by various groups calling for the suspension of Sen. Akume, the SGF, over completely unfounded allegations.

“It is pertinent to note that the alleged fraud did not take place in the SGF’s office, as the alleged perpetrator in question is neither a staff of the SGF’s office nor an aide to Senator Akume.

“Sen. Akume’s decades of public service, marked by transparency and integrity, speaks volumes about his character.”

Expressing confidence in Akume’s integrity, the group recalled that he had served without blemish as Benue State Governor for eight years, senator for 12 years, Minister for four years and now SGF.

It added: “He has consistently performed these responsibilities with exceptional integrity and transparency, championing policies benefitting all Nigerians.

“It is on record that throughout the period of his public service, he has never been found wanting on financial misappropriation, or any such related acts by any institution,” it added.

The forum urged Nigerians to disregard the unfounded allegations and baseless calls for Akume’s suspension from office by the groups.

Also, Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-political organisation, had also denounced the calls for Akume’s suspension and disowned one of the groups claiming to be its faction.

Its Organising Secretary, chief Kole Omu, in a statement, described the call as a mischievous and unauthorised communication that was politically-motivated, and repudiated it.

According to him, Afenifere does not have factions, noting that there is only one Afenifere, which is under the leadership of Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

He said the authentic Afenifere leadership had never at any time authorised any of its officers, serving or retired, to issue what he called a prejudicial, defamatory or politically-motivated statement.

“The public is hereby advised to disregard the fraudulent individuals hiding under the name of Afenifere to pursue personal or partisan agendas

“We are fully aware that certain members of the Labour Party in Yorubaland have continued to masquerade as speaking for Afenifere.

“These political opportunists, whose actions are driven by bitterness and selfish ambition, are hereby, sternly warned to desist from dragging the revered name of Afenifere into disrepute,” he said.

Omololu said the attempt to link the SGF to the EFCC investigation involving a private individual, was not only curiously dishonest, but a deliberate act of blackmail.

He said the investigation was initiated on the strength of a formal complaint lodged with the EFCC by Akume himself, upon observing some irregularities.

The Afenifere chieftain said that the attempt by faceless groups to twist the facts into an accusation of complicity was irresponsible, malicious and embarrassing to the Yoruba nation.

He said: “We wish to reiterate that Afenifere stands firmly on the side of due process, justice and rule of law.

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) should be allowed to conduct its investigations without pressure, coercion or threats of orchestrated protests.

“Afenifere, as a non-partisan and principled socio-political-cultural body, will not be used as a vehicle for any political vendetta,” he further said.

Omololu emphasised that Afenifere would continue to defend the integrity of its name, the unity of Nigeria, and the dignity of Yoruba leadership.

Andrew Uchi, initially thought to be Akume’s aide, was recently arrested by the EFCC over alleged multi-billion naira bribery and money laundering.

Uchi was accused of acquiring properties in Abuja; Jos, Plateau State; and Makurdi, Gboko, and Tarka Local Government Areas of Benue State.

Also, two Bureau de Change operators are under investigation for their alleged involvement in the money laundering scheme linked to him.

The SGF’s office later clarified the issue and distanced itself from Uchi, saying he was neither an aide to Akume, nor its staff member

It urged the public not to speculate or draw conclusions as investigations were still ongoing, adding that it appreciated the understanding and support of the public on the issue.

“It is imperative to state categorically that the office’s leadership is not in any way involved in the alleged misconduct.

“It has always maintained a strong commitment to transparency, accountability, and integrity. We recognise the efforts of the EFCC to ensure that those found culpable are held accountable.”

Civil society groups condemn allegations against SGF Akume

A coalition of 11 civil society organizations, led by Conscience Nigeria, has strongly condemned what it described as unfounded and malicious allegations linking Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), to an alleged N80 billion fraud scandal.

In a joint statement signed by key representatives, including Micheal Stephen Babatunde (National Publicity Secretary, Conscience Nigeria), Joe Mesele (Executive Director, Policy Advocacy and Integrity), and Adekola James (Northern Patriotic Front), the coalition dismissed the claims as lacking in credible evidence and motivated by bad faith.

“We consider the statement by the factional Afenifere group as repugnant, prejudicial, and in bad taste,” the statement read, adding that the group’s seven-day ultimatum and threat of a nationwide protest were attempts to intimidate the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The coalition clarified that the suspect at the center of the controversy, Mr. Uchi, is neither a presidential appointee nor affiliated with the SGF’s office.

“He is merely an opportunist and name-dropper who is not on the SGF’s payroll and does not work in his office,” they stated.

The groups further revealed that it was Senator Akume himself who alerted the EFCC to Uchi’s suspicious lifestyle, distancing himself publicly from the individual.

They accused the factional Afenifere group of trying to manipulate public opinion and interfere with the EFCC’s ongoing investigation.

The coalition reaffirmed their support for due process and urged the public to disregard politically motivated attempts to tarnish the reputation of the SGF.

“The surreptitious coercive attempt by the factional Afenifere group to manipulate the EFCC’s findings or incite public opinion to cast aspersion on the character and person of the SGF with the intent to sway public opinion against him is a direct affront, discriminatory, offensive, obnoxious, distasteful, and disrespectful,” the statement read.

The groups condemned in its entirety the call by the Afenifere group for the suspension of Chief George Akume from office and the threat to call for a nationwide protest.

“We urge the group not to stampede, blackmail, or intimidate the EFCC and allow it to do its job, as the investigation into the matter is still ongoing,” the statement added.

The civil society groups view Senator George Akume as a capable and loyal ally of Mr. President, working assiduously for the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President.

They made it clear that they will resist any attempt by the factional Afenifere group and their cohorts, or any other group or individuals, to denigrate, smear, or deride any of their leaders.

“This Coalition does not support, encourage, or aid any act of corruption or corrupt practices from any quarters, but will vehemently resist any attempt to coercively or manipulatively slander, smear, or surreptitiously assert our leaders with unprofessional conduct,” the statement emphasized.

The groups called for a thorough, transparent investigation into the allegations, based on concrete evidence and guided by the principles of fairness and justice.

“We also urge the public to remain cautious of unfounded allegations and to demand evidence-based reporting,” the statement added.

The groups reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the principles of democracy, good governance, and transparency, and will continue to resist any attempts to undermine these values.
