North-Central APC forum endorses Akume’s leadership, targets six million votes for Tinubu’s re-election

The North-Central All Progressives Congress (NC APC) Forum has officially adopted the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, as the party’s leader in the zone.

This came after a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Thursday, where party members reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the APC in the North Central geo-political zone and set a target of six million votes for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 reelection.

In a statement by the forum’s chairman, Saleh Zazzaga, while acknowledging Akume as the highest-ranking APC leader in the North-Central, the SGF was commended for promoting unity and inclusive leadership.

The Forum, through Zazzaga, a member of the APC campaign council for the 2023 elections, noted past concerns that Akume had prioritized his Tiv, Benue kinsmen while neglecting other regions in the North-Central.

However, the forum noted that Akume has since addressed the concerns, embracing all factions to solidify the party’s presence in the zone.

According to Zazzaga in the statement, the Forum acknowledged Akume’s efforts in uniting party stakeholders, emphasizing that a cohesive front is crucial for securing a strong performance in the 2027 elections.

“As the father of the party in the zone, Senator Akume has shown that he has a large heart by overlooking previous disagreements and embracing all stakeholders in the overall interest of the party.

“We urge all those who are yet to embrace Senator Akume’s leadership to do so, so that the North-Central APC can present a united front in the 2027 election,” the NC APC Forum stated.

While calling on all party members, including State governors, legislators, and grassroots leaders, to rally behind Akume for a stronger APC in the region, the Forum urged key party structures such as the North-Central APC Governors Forum, Senate and House Caucuses, and State party executives to align with Akume’s leadership to enhance electoral success.

“We understand that these units have been working seamlessly with the SGF, Senator George Akume.

“They should continue to work with the guidance of Senator George Akume, and continue to strategize to ensure that the APC presents a united front in 2027.

“Our goal is to win all elective positions in the zone in 2027 to show that in truth, the North-Central is for APC,” Zazzaga said.

The North-Central APC Forum reiterated its commitment to mobilizing support for Tinubu’s reelection, increasing its initial pledge of four million votes to six million.

“We believe that with all stakeholders working with Senator George Akume, the North-Central can produce six million votes for Mr. President in the next election,” the Forum declared.

Addressing the lingering power struggle between Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and Akume over the APC structure in Benue, the Forum urged Alia to recognize Akume’s leadership and work collaboratively for the party’s progress.

“Governor Alia, like Senator Akume, is committed to APC’s success. We encourage him to embrace Akume’s leadership to foster harmony and strengthen the party,” Zazzaga said.

The Forum, however, emphasized the importance of unity while urging all party members to set aside personal interests for the collective good, noting, “As we approach 2027, internal divisions must be resolved.

“Only a united APC can achieve the resounding victory we seek. We advise that the hatchet should be buried for harmony and progress to thrive in the affairs of the party”.

Well-articulated, inclusive policies fundamental to achieving Renewed Hope Agenda – Akume

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, (SGF),  Dr George Akume, says a well-articulated, structured, inclusive and institutionalised approach to policy management is fundamental to achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Akume made this known at a Stakeholders’ Validation Session on the Draft National Policy Development and Management Framework in Abuja.

The event was organised by the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, under the leadership of Dr Hadiza Usman.

The SGF stated that policy making was not a theoretical exercise, but a practical tool for governance and a mechanism through which governments translated national aspirations into concrete actions.

He described the session as an opportunity to refine the framework into an instrument that will endure and ensure that public policy was driven by data, aligned with national goals, and was responsive to the dynamic needs of the country.

”President Bola Tinubu remains committed to strengthening institutional frameworks, fostering a governance approach that was s focused on its citizens.

“Governance trives when policies and policy architecture itself is designed with input from diverse stakeholders and when their implementation is active and deliberate.

“This process cannot be left to changes, chances, nor can it afford the luxury of indecisions,” he said.

Akume said his office bears the responsibility of ensuring that policies are not only developed in line with national priorities, but also effectively implemented, monitored, and adopted in response to emerging realities

“Effective governance is built upon a foundation of strategic coordination, institutional synergy, and policy coherence.

“As the central hub for policy alignment and government-wide coordination, my Office is committed to ensuring that national policies are not only well-conceived but also effectively harmonised and implemented,” Akume said.

He said that the validation session was a testament to that commitment, adding that it was an opportunity to reinforce structures that promote efficiency, accountability, and results-driven governance.

He emphasised that a well-defined policy framework ensures that government interventions are streamlined, resources are optimally deployed, and national priorities remain at the core of decision-making.

“As we refine this framework, we move closer to institutionalising a governance culture where policies translate seamlessly into tangible outcomes for all Nigerians.

“Let us be clear; no framework, no matter how well-crafted, can succeed without a collective commitment to implementation. As we deliberate today, let us approach this exercise with a sense of purpose and responsibility.

“This validation session is not just about fine-tuning a document; it is about setting a new standard for governance in Nigeria,” he said.

Akume said that his office was about laying a strong foundation for an era where policies are not just aspirational statements, but instruments of real and measurable transformation.

“Let us seize this opportunity to shape a future where public policy is structured, coordinated, and most importantly, impactful.

“I commend the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination for her diligence in driving this initiative forward and leading the development of the robust and instructive Draft Framework,” Akume said.

  • Tax reform bills not meant to impoverish north — Akume

Tax reform bills not meant to impoverish north — Akume

The federal government has debunked claims that the proposed tax reform bills are designed to marginalize the northern region, emphasizing their intent to promote national growth and fiscal sustainability.

Speaking during an interview on TVC’s Politics on Sunday, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF),  Senator George Akume described the bills as “pro-poor” and “nationalistic,” urging critics to evaluate their purpose rather than politicizing them.

“These bills are not targeted at any section of the country,” Akume stated. “I am from the north, and I am 100% supportive of these bills. They followed a normal legislative process, starting from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and finally to the National Assembly.”

Highlighting the reforms’ benefits, Akume explained that individuals earning less than ₦800,000 annually and small businesses with revenues below ₦550 million would be exempt from paying taxes.

He further said sectors such as education and healthcare are exempted from value-added tax (VAT), adding “these provisions show that the bills are designed to support the poor and foster economic growth”.

Akume criticized the opposition for what he described as a misrepresentation of the bills’ intentions.

“Many of those arguing against these bills have not even read them. Some are attacking purely from the perspective of opposition politics, aiming to gain support by spreading misinformation,” he said.

He also noted that the reforms ensure equitable revenue distribution, particularly benefiting northern states and local governments.

“Under the new arrangement, states will receive 55% of generated revenues, while local governments will get 35%. With more local governments and states in the north, the region stands to gain significantly,” he explained.

Akume urged Nigerians to focus on the bills’ broader objectives of modernizing the country’s tax system and enhancing fiscal stability, saying “for over 50 years, no attempt has been made to reform our tax system despite its archaic nature. These bills aim to ensure maximum value for the people and propel the economy toward prosperity”.

He acknowledged the growing resistance to the reforms, attributing it partly to a lack of effective communication, he however advised critics to channel their concerns through proper legislative processes, such as public hearings, instead of resorting to protests.

“Protests don’t advance the cause of peace or dampen the spirit of those supportive of these reforms,” he said.

Reiterating his belief in democracy’s problem-solving capacity, Akume expressed confidence that a consensus would eventually emerge to address any issues with the bills.

“Circumstances will build consensus. In a democracy, everyone has their say, but let’s give these bills a chance and see how they enhance our fiscal sustainability and economic growth,” he concluded.

Akume to northern politicians: wait till 2031 for presidency

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has called for the presidency to remain in the southern part of Nigeria after the 2027 elections, urging northern politicians to wait until 2031 to vie for the nation’s highest office.

Speaking during an interview on TVC’s Politics on Sunday, Akume reiterated his appeal for restraint, stressing the importance of unity and stability in the country.

He cautioned against prioritizing personal ambitions over Nigeria’s hard-earned peace and progress, advocating for adherence to an informal rotational arrangement that fosters inclusiveness and equity.

The SGF revealed that his position stems from historical precedents and agreements made during critical moments in the nation’s history.

He pointed to past political meetings, including one in Kaduna, as pivotal in fostering the understanding necessary to maintain national harmony.

Akume stressed that these agreements should be respected to avoid “rocking the boat” and destabilizing the country.

Addressing concerns about political goodwill, Akume dismissed claims that the government or ruling party had lost its influence, citing recent electoral victories in Edo and Ondo states as evidence of continued public trust.

He maintained that the policies of the current administration are having a positive impact, positioning the government as capable and effective in delivering on its promises.

The SGF also issued a stern caution to political alliances attempting to undermine the principle of zoning.

He stated that any presidential candidate emerging from the North in 2027 would face defeat, reiterating that the South should produce the next leader to uphold fairness and equity.

Akume’s remarks reflect his consistent advocacy for a balanced political structure that prioritizes the collective good over individual ambitions.

He underscored the role of divine will in leadership, emphasizing that positions of power are ultimately determined by God, regardless of human efforts.

“Today, this is what I said at the convocation of Nile University, where I was given a honorary doctorate. I plead with my brothers in the north to wait for  2031 to run for presidential election.

“It is not yet the time for the north to throw in the hatchet, the brick. It’s not yet the time. .

“With due respect, Atiku was part of that meeting. By that time, he was still governor and I was also a leader, a noted leader. And a side on to that. Yes.

“So it’s not yet time for the north. This has been my appeal to them. Let us not destroy our country because of personal ambition.

“If it is the will of God, at 90, you can still be president of this country. If it is not His will, you will never be. But my advice, and this has been consistent, is that let us not rock the boat.

“I still maintain my stance and this is an appeal. Maybe some people don’t know what took place in Kaduna that brought peace to this country.

“Anybody any alliances are bringing should be from the South then that candidate will also be defeated by us. Nobody should say that we have lost our goodwill. We haven’t.

“No government would have done better than what we are doing. Election was conducted recently in Edo, we won.

“Election was conducted in Ondo recently, we won. What is presidential election? What is different from this thing? Incidentally, the policies of government are impacting”, he said.

“We have to empower not only the kids but also their parents so that parents would also be financially capable to meet the needs of their kids,” he said.
