Akume tasks NEITI inter-ministerial task team on transparency

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, on Monday, May 27, tasked the Inter-Ministerial Task Team (IMTTA) members of the team with transparency while discharging their duty.

He said the activities of NEITI are under the watchful eyes of the International Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and members of the press.

The chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Task Team (IMTT) of the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI)

The director of SGF main office, Simon Tyungu, who represented him at the inauguration in Abuja, said: “As a matter of fact, you all know that NEITI is an agency of transparency, and I want to urge all of us that in the conduct of this business, in the conduct of our assignment, we have to be mindful of what we do because NEITI activities are in the glare of the press and international body EITI.”

He admitted that the assignment of the team would be very tasking.

He, however, pledged his members would do the job to the best of their ability.

“We know this job is going to be an arduous task. It is not going to be easy. As representatives of our various agencies. We will always do our best to ensure that we achieve our goal,” said Akume.

In his remarks, NEITI Executive Secretary, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, said the IMTT as it is popularly known is a very important aspect of the EITI process in Nigeria, being a decision made by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) after the release of the first NEITI oil and gas report that covered years 1999-2004.

He said the essence of this task team is to study very carefully each NEITI industry report of the Oil, Gas and Solid minerals sectors as well as the Fiscal Allocation and Statutory Disbursement (FASD) report, map out the key findings and recommendations in these reports and identify the responsible agencies, to carry out the remedial actions as recommended by the Independent Administrators.

Orji said the IMTT is also expected to map out strategies that will track and report on the progress made towards the implementation of the findings and recommendations in the NEITI reports.

The Executive Secretary said the objective is to ensure that NEITI does not just publish reports that gather dust on the shelves of the agency, but that the findings of these reports help to deepen government oversight and reform of the oil, gas, and mining sectors for productivity, transparency and accountability in a manner that provides the greatest good for the greatest number of Nigerians who are the ultimate beneficiaries of the natural resources endowed in the country.

He added that the team is a reunion of what we established in the past. NEITI has envisaged that the reforms that are taking place in Nigeria’s extractive sector especially, the implementation of the Solid Minerals Roadmap and the enactment of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) would have taken over the work of the IMTT, but recent developments have clearly shown that the IMTT has come to stay and remains relevant due to its unique composition and responsibility.

Orji said the last EITI validation and the recent international mission conducted by the EITI in Nigeria, equally identified the need for the IMTT and reinforced NEITI’s position that the task team should be invigorated and strengthened to help oversee the implementation of NEITI reports recommendations.

NEITI, he said, is therefore convinced that the IMTT framework is better positioned to meet the challenges identified in the governance framework that has been put in place for the extractive sector.

He said NEITI is also of the view that the achievements and impacts it has recorded in the sector will be tracked and documented under the framework of the IMTT.

The Executive Secretary said this is against the background that the IMTT structure will support in tracking and measurement of scorecards, expectations, and how to realize the task.

He said the National Stakeholders Working Group (NSWG) also known as the Board of NEITI has expanded the Inter-Ministerial Task Team -IMTT to serve as the forum for both remediation and government engagements.

He added that the IMTT is to be chaired by the office of the SGF.

He recalled that a NEITI National Stakeholders Working Group is in place, it was inaugurated last week by the President with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation as the Chairman.

He said representatives from the key agencies that NEITI is closely working with. They include the Nigerian Upstream Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), NNPCLtd, the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) RAMFAC and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

He added: “We also have as members, the Central Bank of Nigeria, Office of the Auditor General of the Federation, Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Corporate Affairs Commission, Niger Delta Development Commission and the Mining Cadastre Office amongst others.

We also have in our midst today, representatives of these organisations officers who are not lower than a director.

“We are confident that the IMTT members will take leadership on how the NEITI findings and recommendations are implemented in their various organizations and agencies.

“The progress and traction we gain in implementing these recommendations is expected to feed into key government policies, goals and impact in the ongoing reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and the 2023 EITI Standard.

“NEITI has also since commenced the conduct of its 2022/2023 industry reports of the Oil, Gas and Solid Minerals sector. Our scope of coverage is very wide and the outcome of this very important industry report covering companies doing business in both sectors will be very insightful for the government, the legislature, the civil society and the international development partners as well as investors interested in investing in Nigeria’s extractive sector.

Transparency and accountability of transactions and operations of the sector are key to making investment decisions concerning the sector. The EITI report globally and NEITI reports in Nigeria have constituted a very important benchmark for measuring adherence to noble ideals across the globe.

“NEITI is determined to publish the 2022-2023 reports by September 2024.

We are grateful to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, the Civil Society Organizations working closely with us, and the companies under the umbrella of the NEITI-Companies forum as well as the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce (OPTS) and in particular the miners Association of Nigeria for their cooperation and partnership in working together with NEITI.

“We also wish to thank our partners, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), ICPC, NFIU, and other anti-corruption agencies that are working with NEITI, and also closely monitoring this process that we are very confident of their cooperation and support especially for non-compliance by some covered entities.

“We therefore call on all the covered entities that will be covered by this report to give us their full cooperation. We also warn that adherence, timely provision of information and data by relevant government agencies and companies covered by this process are very fundamental, mandatory and a requirement.”

One Year on: Dissecting Akume’s insight on Tinubu’s leadership

Days and months rolled by, just like that! It is already a year since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took the oath of office as Nigeria’s leader. In that defining moment of history when Tinubu offhandedly announced the end of petroleum subsidy at the Eagle Square venue of the inauguration ceremony on May 29, 2023, Nigerians have and they still continue to express varied opinions not just about his leadership and capacity to steer the ship of state that seems to be forever floating precariously on a tempestuous sea, they have also been critical about his governance mantra which he boisterously label a Renewed Hope Agenda.

No doubt, he inherited layers of challenges, some of which date back to decades of inadequate official attention in various sectors. Now, with the Naira dancing up and down against the powerful, muscle-flexing dollar and with the prices of petroleum products flying above the roof tops coupled with the volatility of the prices of daily needs, many citizens continue to question the government’s sincerity in nudging them to hope for a better future amid a poverty stricture that has impoverished millions. Where is the hope that is to be renewed when the one they relied on in the past remains deferred, they ask.

In truth, when a government talks about rekindling hope, it means there are visible signs that hope lies somewhere and all that is needed is the will to positively tap into its potentials. In other words, there must be tangibles that would reassure the citizens that they are not on another hollow fishing expedition as it was the story in the past. Note too, that we are eternal skeptics, having learnt not to trust government since the very early days of independence. On this, I doubt if anyone who has followed the trajectory of the Nigerian leadership crisis would blame the people for shoving their noses into air and casting serious doubts on any hope lying in wait no matter how forlorn. This is not just a case of once beaten, twice shy. Several times, Nigerians have been left in the sun to dry and beaten ceaselessly by the rains without any shield. So, they have leant how to shiver in solitude, knowing that when the broom swept the torn umbrella away, the triumphant broom has only gloried in hollow triumphalism. That is their reality, at least, for now.

Not that there were no flashes of hope especially when the economy maintained some stability with the Naira pulling its weight against the dollars some months back. At that period, it was not uncommon to hear some of the president’s harshest critics cutting him some flak and expressing optimism that the temporary sufferings might just worth the while. But this didn’t last as the Naira continues with its floundering jigsaw puzzle thereby inflaming a negative vibe that has literally empowered Tinubu’s leading political enemies to add some expensive litres of petrol to the raging controversy about the economy and governance in particular. With an assurance that hardly can the administration point to any tangible achievement in its first year in office; many had waited for the day that the President and his men would come out with a record of stewardship in office. What, for example ,would the ministers say they have been doing in the office over the months other than riding in exotic cars and disturbing our eardrums with sirens that give them the right of way on roads built with the taxpayer’s money? Would the government ever pay a living wage to its workers? Would there ever be a reduction in the soaring rate of food prices as that of petroleum products remain on its upward swing? Would the poor ever breathe in this asphyxiating economy superintended by men and women asking the rest of us to cling on to a renewed hope? Questions and more questions.

Oblivious of the not-so-hidden grumblings out there and the urgent need to confront the narrative with verifiable evidence that it is not sleeping on its hands, the Federal Government, last week, allowed its leading men to speak directly to the several issues raised by the citizens. Tagged ‘First Anniversary Sectoral Press Briefing’ organised by The Presidency through the Office of the Minister for Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the event attracted quite a number of ministers and it afforded them a rare opportunity not only to give accounts of their stewardship in the nine months or so that they had been in office but it also provides a feedback mechanism of sorts with the interactive nature of the briefing.

For me, the sessions offered an opportunity to listen directly to Tinubu’s men talking about how they have helped their principal in the realization of the good life that he promised Nigerians. It is important for one to know what they do and say, also how they go about discharging their responsibilities should give an insight into what actually goes on the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies. Though a self-appraisal of some sorts, one can always form an opinion regardless of the fact that one cannot rule out the possibility that some of them would offer a potpourri of gratuitous insult by opting to tell a lie through the teeth, painting AI-generated pictures of their persons as top performers. On the flip side, many of them pleasantly surprised the audience made of senior journalists, members of the civil societies, politicians of all shades and hue; and other Nigerians. They were down to earth in the presentations and they answered questions without the kind of arrogance and needless posturing that we were used to in the past. The three-day session did throw some positive light on what has been going on in the government in the past year.  Be that as it may, the verdict still lies with the critical public who are the direct recipients of the step and misstep they take in office.

So, what exactly did the President’s men say that should reawaken hope? Armed with data, pictures and other analytical tools, they actually said a lot in an attempt to push back what many of them consider as ill-informed narratives about the governance structure of the present administration. First to speak was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. As usual, Akume, a former state governor and Senator, was straight to the point. While acknowledging that the take-off was not something to cheer about, he said Tinubu’s determination to take on the challenges ahead with a view to take Nigeria to a better place was the singular reason why he opted for the tough but necessary decisions. He said Tinubu knew about the attendant economic hardship and every other pains that Nigerians have been made to go through over the year. Akume, while noting that were it possible to avoid the grinding anguish, a people-friendly Tinubu would be the first to toe that line. However, in the midst of all these, he said that an undaunted Tinubu has, in the last one year, displayed visionary leadership that would soon lead to a positive impact on the socio-economic life of Nigerians.

Continuing, he said as an active participant in this government, he bears testimony to the President’s commitment to unleashing Nigeria’s full economic potential in the areas of job creation and granting access for small and large scale businesses; fight against hunger, poverty and corruption, completion of abandoned projects; human capital development; substantial investments in healthcare and education; ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians by strengthening the country’s security apparatus, enhancing intelligence gathering, and fostering greater collaboration among security agencies to address the multifaceted challenges of security across the country; the rolling out of several social intervention programmes aimed at alleviating poverty and empowering the vulnerable segments of our society.

And here is Akume’s summation: “I make bold to say that, Nigeria, under its present stewardship, have witnessed significant policy strides in various sectors including but not limited to: the Presidential accent to the 2023 Electricity Bill, a move that dismantled monopolistic control over electricity generation, transmission and distribution at the national level and granted authority to State Governments, Corporations and individuals to generate, distribute and transmit electricity, thus decentralizing the power sector; accent to the passage into law of the Nigeria Data Protection Bill 2023 that established a legal framework for safeguarding personal information and promoting data protection practices in Nigeria; and the challenging but very necessary removal of fuel subsidy, a longstanding policy notorious for fostering corruption, inefficiency and imposing significant fiscal strain on the government annually, and primarily benefitting the affluent and smugglers, rather than effectively aiding the general populace. It is apt to say, that under President Tinubu’s stewardship within his first year in office, we have witnessed significant strides in various sectors of our economy”.

“Through prudent fiscal policies and strategic investments, the Nigerian economy has shown resilience and potential for growth. The administration’s focus on infrastructure development, job creation and economic diversification has laid the foundation for sustainable progress and prosperity for all Nigerians.

Furthermore, government’s commitment to good governance and the rule of law has strengthened our democratic institutions and enhanced transparency and accountability in governance. His unwavering resolve to combat corruption and promote ethical leadership has earned the admiration and support of the Nigerian people. Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, we are therefore gathered here today to bring to the populace a report of stewardship within the year including the challenges encountered and the implementable solutions engendered to upgrade the prospects of actualizing the Renewed Hope Agenda. It is however instructive to note, that the act of nation building is not for the government alone, it is a collective responsibility and commitment to building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria. Let us therefore rededicate ourselves to the ideals of unity, peace and progress by working together towards realizing the full potential of our great nation.”

Akume’s perspective above encapsulates how the government rates itself in spite of the barrage of attacks against it daily. However, while no one can deny the government to beat its own drums of praise, the government should be reminded that it will be deceiving itself if it thinks that the harsh criticisms would stop when the people are yet to directly and physically feel and touch the impacts of all the policy initiatives Akume highlighted including the others that were enunciated by the various ministers that spoke during the three-day event.

Let me note here that, for those who think the ministers and aides were just there for the fun of it, they would need to listen to the presentations of some key cabinet ministers like that of Barr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory; Dele Alake of the Solid Mineral Resources Ministry; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; his counterpart in the Ministry of Defence, Bello Matawalle; the Minister of State (Oil), Senator Heineken Loipobiri and a host of others. Going by the thwarted logic out there, it is easy to believe the tale that most of the people surrounding the president are ill-qualified for the positions. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Quite a number of these persons, I dare say, are well-grounded and they appear to understand the drill far more than a biased public would credit them with.

But again, it is one thing to understand the problems and another to proffer seeming workable solutions to them. Nigerian leaders have never shield away from speaking solutions to recurring problems in every sector of the economy. Never. The question is: does this government have the political will to tackle the longstanding knotty challenges without brazenly inflicting further pains on a highly expectant citizenry whose interest Akume described as being at the heart of every move by the government? What happens after this low-key celebration will tell us if we can take Tinubu’s men seriously or not. For now, we are not like the dead who have no hope; all that the people ask is for their hopes and expectations to be justified with the actualization of many more people-focused governance objectives. We wait.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume has called on Nigerians to bring back the good old days of peaceful co-existence and live as one family, as he calls for the unity that existed in the past to blossom among Nigerians.

Shettima, Akume, Akpabio, Wike: hardship over soon

The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that it is on the right path to economic prosperity.

It acknowledged the hardship but reassured citizens that it would be over soon.

Vice President Kashim Shettima; Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike gave the ray of hope at different fora in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt at the weekend.

Shettima, at The Sun Newspapers Awards in Lagos on Saturday night, said a brighter future lay ahead for Nigerians through the economic reform policies.

He added that this will be made possible with shared commitment, mutual respect and open dialogue.

The vice president was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Stanley Nkwocha.

He said in a paper titled “Celebrating Excellence, Building Together: Our Commitment To Press Freedom And Media Development In Nigeria,” that the reforms, including his economic policies and investment in infrastructure, were already showing signs of positive results.

“The government is commencing the implementation of the Pulaku Initiative, a large-scale resettlement programme aimed at addressing the root causes of farmers-herders conflicts.

“The initiative will revitalise the affected communities through the construction of residences, roads, schools, and essential facilities.

“I inaugurated a steering committee to coordinate the implementation of the initiative in fulfilment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to improve the lives of all Nigerians,” he said.

Shettima also emphasised the crucial role the media must play in achieving this goal, calling for collaboration and a shared commitment to national progress.

He added that the media must not fail to play their roles as “watchdogs, truth-seekers, and the voices that inform and empower our citizens.”

He further noted President Tinubu’s commitment to a vibrant press, recognising that “a free and independent media is essential for a healthy democracy.”

While advocating press freedom, Shettima urged the media to uphold ethical standards, fact-check information, and avoid sensationalism.

Akume, who chaired The Sun Awards, said while nation-building is a collective endeavour, the citizens must support the government in its efforts to build a truly great country

The SGF said: “The Tinubu Administration shall remain steadfast in its commitment to building a brighter future for all Nigerians, under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“While progress may seem slow at times, the vision for a better tomorrow remains resolute. We shall soon navigate successfully the current economic challenges.”

Yesterday, at the opening session of the 2024 First Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in Abuja, where he represented President Tinubu, Akume said the country was looking up to the bishops to continue to encourage Nigerians as the government works assiduously to reposition the economy and end insecurity.

He said: “The season of Lent is an apt time to host this critical meeting as it is a period of profound reflection, prayer, fasting, and charitable giving which coincides with a challenging period of economic hardship in our nation which we are working to reverse.

“While bold economic reforms have been undertaken by this administration, resulting in short-term hardship, they are borne out of a deep-seated commitment to Nigeria’s long-term prosperity and stability.

“This administration inherited a daunting economic landscape, necessitating decisive action to alter our nation’s downward trajectory.

“With unwavering dedication, we are striving towards a prosperous, healthy, and globally competitive Nigeria.

“Given the critical situation, now more than ever before, we must remain steadfast, renewing our faith in God’s provision and protection.

“Amidst adversity, we must remain resolute, renewing our faith in God’s providence and walking in love as we support one another.

“This administration is steadfast in its resolve to enhance security, bolster the economy, and create opportunities for all Nigerians.

“We acknowledge the various hardships affecting nations across the world precipitated and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the escalating cost of living.

“However, we draw strength from our collective hope and diligent efforts of the government, private sector, religious organisations and others, trusting that through God’s grace, better days lie ahead

“As spiritual leaders, My Lord Bishops, we rely on your unwavering encouragement to the Nigerian populace.

“Your commitment to upholding integrity, offering sound counsel, and fostering constructive dialogue is deeply appreciated by the government.

“The church’s engagement with Nigerians on matters of faith enriches our responsiveness and strengthens our national fabric.

“Both church and government are aligned in our shared commitment to a brighter future for all Nigerians. Through strategic policies, well-thought-out initiatives and investments.

“Our administration aims to drive economic transformation, ensure security, enhance food production, harness natural resources, develop critical infrastructure, improve social services, foster economic diversification, and enhance governance efficiency.

“These efforts are geared towards building a prosperous, secure and inclusive Nigeria for all.

“Although the economic hardship and security challenges may seem daunting, let us continue to encourage one another in the Lord and pray without ceasing.

“Likewise, let us remember Galatians 6:9 which reminds us ‘not to become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.’”

‘Reforms only way to economic recovery’

In Rivers, Akpabio and Wike insisted that Tinubu’s economic policies were the only way to build a prosperous national economy.

They argued that the policies to turn around and address years of rot in the economic landscape were not miracles that could manifest in six months.

Akpabio and Wike spoke during a thanksgiving service by Senator Barry Mpigi to appreciate God for his electoral victory on February 25 last year in Koroma Tai Local Government Area.

Wike said though people complained that the reforms had put them in harsh economic positions, they remained the only way to take the country to its destination.

Wike, who spoke before the Senate President, chided some governors for blaming the hardship in the country on Tinubu.

He recalled that the same governors had praised the President for not interfering with the processes that resulted in their Supreme Court victories.

The minister, who is the immediate past governor of Rivers State, said President Tinubu needed the support of all stakeholders in the efforts to address the “inherited crisis” in the country.

Wike said: “I believe that God in his infinite mercy will give us the strength to work and continue to support Mr President. The decision of Mr. President is hard but if we are patient at the end of the day, we will get to where we want to go.

“It is funny that some people want him to bring a policy to change something that had spoilt many years ago within six months. Even if it is a miracle, it is difficult. What is required is to give him support.

“I seriously believe in the Renewed Hope Agenda. We are going to do everything to continue to support Mr. President.

“I watched after the Supreme Court verdicts; everybody that came out would say ‘I thank Mr President for not interfering’. But immediately that expired people are saying a different thing.

“I watched every governor after they thanked God, the next person was Mr. President. But just after two weeks, everything evaporated. Now it is Mr . ‘President we are dying.’”

He appealed to Nigerians not to lose hope.

Wike said: “Nigerians should not lose hope. Look at what we are doing in Abuja. It means that Mr President will do better. It is a sign of good things to come.

“People are saying Wike is doing well but it is because the President is in support of it. The President is committed to seeing that Nigerians have better lives.”

Wike also said that about 85 per cent of persons who secured victory in the past elections in Rivers State are still in his team.

He boasted that with such a force, he could no longer wait for the 2027 general election.

He added: “With the forces we have, I don’t know of anybody who will challenge us. It is like tomorrow is 2027. I cannot wait. The two leaders of the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) and APC are here.

“It is only in Rivers that you can find this unity. People don’t like it. So they do everything possible to make sure we are divided. But since we know, we have refused to be divided.”

‘We don’t know what to charge Emefiele with’

Akpabio, in an analogy, compared the poor economic condition Tinubu inherited to a bucket filled with foams while the under has a small quantity of water.

He said: “God has been able to merge us politically. What we need now is economic rejuvenation and I believe strongly that through President Tinubu God will answer our prayer.

“Nigeria was like a foam inside a pail or bucket containing a small quantity of water. As the foam filled the pail, you would think it had no water. By the time you push the foam down, your hands will only touch water.

“The kind of economic mess we were in a lot of people do not understand. The economic situation was tricky.

“We don’t even know what to charge the former Central Bank Governor (Godwin Emefiele) with. We don’t know whether to charge him for putting foam on top of a pail or to charge him for printing notes without income. I don’t know what we will charge him with.

“What we know is that we are here today because of the actions and policies that they took and we recognise that but we are now battling to ensure that Nigerians can sleep with their eyes closed and have three square meals on their tables.”

Like Wike, the Senate President insisted that Tinubu’s policies were designed to gradually give the country a clear economic footprint.

He argued that such could not be achieved overnight

“Nigerians should rest assured that we campaigned for these jobs and we will not let them down. All we need is patience. The rot that has happened in Nigeria for many years cannot be solved within months, “ Akpabio added.

The Senate President used the opportunity to appeal to Wike to look towards Ogoni land for someone that would match his achievements as Rivers State governor.

In a parliamentary style, he put a question to the gathering on where the next governor of the state would come from in 2027 to which those in attendance chorused Ogoniland.

Akpabio immediately announced that “the ayes have it,” and then turned to Wike, saying: “Barry Mpigi is thanking God for the future of Ogoniland.

“One of the hallmarks of leadership is loyalty. You cannot be a good leader unless you are a good follower. Wike followed all past leaders in Rivers.”

Still facing Wike, the Senate President made a veiled reference to former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, whom he said never contested an election but became a governor.

He said: “I know you (Wike) followed Dr. Peter Odili very well. There was a time my former good friend was in Ghana and you were running around here with lawyers.

“You were the first to have the pronouncement of the Supreme Court making someone a governor without the person going for an election.

“On getting there he turned around and asked: ‘Why will this man (Wike) be this powerful?’ He had to fight you.

“We were not surprised when in 2023 you said agreement is agreement. If you don’t want to adhere to an agreement on election day, come and win in Rivers State.”

Akpabio also thanked the minister for backing Tinubu, saying: “It is your support that had enabled the Southsouth to produce the first Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.”

The Senate President called for a minute of silence in honour of Access Holding Plc boss, Herbert Wigwe, his wife, Doreen Chizoba, his son Chizzy and others who died in a helicopter crash in the United States.

Benue NASS caucus hail Akume, Agada

Benue National Assembly Caucus has hailed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume and the State Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Austin Agada, over the success of the rerun election in Benue State on Saturday.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), conducted a rerun election to fill the vacant seat of the Guma 1 State Constituency at the Benue House of Assembly on Saturday, where about four candidates of various parties participated.

Declaring the result in Daudu, the Constituency headquarters, the Returning Officer, Prof Julius Ikya, announced the APC candidate, Mr Terwase Uche as the winner, having polled 5,289 votes, to defeat the PDP candidate, Hon. Geoffrey Jimin, who polled 4,134 votes, while the Labour Party (LP) candidate scored 2,833.

Addressing newsmen at the Secretariat of the Caucus in Abuja on Sunday, the Spokesperson, Hon. Philip Agbese, on behalf of the Caucus, congratulated the duo of Akume and the APC State Chairman, Agada, for the unprecedented victory at the polls.

The Caucus, which comprises Federal Lawmakers from Benue State and of various political parties at the National Assembly, also hailed INEC, security agencies and principal actors in the election for the peaceful conduct.

It attributed the success of the election to the sterling leadership of Akume and Agada in the state, which has made the victory of APC possible, despite the forces within and outside the APC, to sabotage the hard work of faithful party men.

“Against all odds, the rerun was peaceful. Against all odds, the APC candidate won; despite the strong forces within the party, collaborating with those outside the party to sabotage the labour of party faithful in the area.

“But for the timely guidance and congent leadership provided by the Leader of the Party, Senator George Akume and the State Chairman, Comrade Austin Agada, the story would have been different. Now, Benue people have known the truth. The APC as a party has also seen the difference between genuine party men and those who were invited to come and eat.

“And in all these, too, we must acknowledge the levelled playing ground provided by the electoral umpire, INEC; the professional and civil manners the security agencies conducted themselves during the election and the level of cooperation from the participants and their agents.

“It spells good future for the state. It means future elections will toll this pattern of peace, freeness, fairness and credibility. Benue people have reached a higher stage of political awareness and this is a plus for us. The electorate too must be commended”, the Caucus added.

How Akume helped me secure secondterm as Nasarawa gov – Al-Makura

    • No one is my enemy, says SGF

Former Governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura has disclosed how the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume helped him secure re-election in 2015 as governor of the state after surviving an impeachment threat.

Al-Makura stated this yesterday in Lafia during the official decamping ceremony of Senator Solomon Ewuga, a former Deputy Governor of the state and FCT minister from PDP to the APC.

Senator Ewuga was received into the party by the APC National Chairman, Dr Umar Ganduje and the SGF, Senator George Akume and other stakeholders of the party in the North Central.

Senator Al-Makura who described the SGF as a true son of the North Central said “Akume played a key role to the formation of APC and shortly after I was threatened by an impeachment, the election came , it took the assistance, support and commitment of Senator Akume who came together with friends like Senator Tilley Gyado to go round the state in 2015 to ensure they gave me the moral support especially the Tiv nationalities in the state to ensure I was re-elected,” he said.

The former Nasarawa governor said Senator George Akume who was governor of Benue State between 1999 and 2007 ensured peace and stability between Benue and Nasarawa, adding: “he worked very closely with the then Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Adamu.

Al-Makura explained further that the coming into APC of Senator Solomon Ewuga who is a seasoned politician will add value to the smooth operation of the party in Nasarawa State.

He said that his political path with that of Ewuga first crossed during the Second Republic in 1979.  “I was the youth leader of NPN in Plateau and he was the assistant secretary of the party in the state. When I came in 2011 to ensure that CPC won in Nasarawa State, Ewuga was beside me. He moved together with me to ensure the success of the CPC in Nasarawa State.”

Meanwhile, the SGF, Senator George Akume, has said that he has no enemy even among those who wish him dead.

Senator Akume also said that his uncommon forgiveness to people he usually helped, including those that paid him back with betrayal has lifted him to where he is today.

Akume made the disclosure yesterday when the Mbatiav Community of Gboko Local Government Area (LGA), of the state paid him a solidarity visit in his Makurdi residence.

He stressed that though some politicians do wish him dead but he cannot wish anybody dead regardless of any circumstances.

“That is why I forgive easily and God do forgive my inadequacies as well,” Akume said.

He further disclosed that the people of Mbatiav had been very supportive to him since he launched himself into the political space.

He encouraged them to continue to pray for President Ahmed Tinubu to enable him succeed in transforming the country, reducing poverty and thereby putting smiles on the faces of the people.

Earlier, the Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, Mr Aondona Dajoh, prayed God to give him (Akume) good health to discharge his duties as the SGF creditably.

Dajoh also prayed to God to keep elevating the SGF politically.

The traditional ruler, Mue Ter  Gbemacha, Chief Ijiir Tarzoho, commended President Tinubu for appointing Akume as the SGF, describing his appointment as a round peg in the round hole.

Tarzoho also appreciated Akume for his good works, particularly for facilitating the appointment of his subjects into various positions such as the Governor of Benue State Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Hon. Utsev, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Federal Medical Centre, Prof. Joseph Kortor and the Speaker of Benue Assembly, Dajo.

He, however, demanded for more appointments and support for his subjects.

The Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), Gboko Local Government Area, Hon. Basil Yina, assured that there would be no other opposition party in Gboko come 2027 owing to the pragmatic leadership of the SG.
