Community seeks Amosun’s intervention over kingship tussle

Almost two years after the demise of its monarch, Oba Samuel Oludademu Tinuoso Joshua, Orile-Ifo, a town in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, is yet to crown a new monarch.

This followed a crisis arising from the nomination of a king for the ancient town.

They people are asking Governor Ibikunle Amosun and the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, to intervene in the matter before it degenerates into a clash between the contending parties and their supporters.

Oba Joshua was from the Shogoroye Tinuoso ruling house and it was declared that the next king will come from Sobowale Afijaperi ruling house.

The Sobowale Afijaperi ruling house unanimously nominated Prince Ekundayo Hafeez Tinuoso as its sole candidate at a meeting on November 20, 2014 which was presided over by Pa Jeremiah Odetunde, the head of the ruling house.

The family, thereafter, informed the kingmakers of their choice through a letter addressed to the chairman, Chief M.A. Adeniji.

The letter dated November 20, 2014 was copied to the Chairman, Ifo Local Government Council, the Alake of Egbaland and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

It was learnt that the matter assumed a new dimension when the kingmakers made a u-turn and allegedly declined to proceed with the installation of Hafeez Tinuoso as the next oba.

The kingmakers, it was learnt, allegedly pitched tent with another person who does not belong to the two royal families.

The Aare Erunbe Egbaland and Secretary, Council of Chiefs of Orile-Ifo, High Chief Olufela Akinwale Dipeolu, blamed the kingmakers for not honouring and respecting the choice of the Sobowale Afijaperi ruling house.

He feared that “the action of the kingmakers might take the town back to the dark days unless something is done to prevent them from taking the action”.

Dipeolu is, however, appealing for the intervention of Governor Ibikunle Amosun, the Egba Traditional Council to come to their aid before the situation gets out of hand.

  • Amosun, Labour end rift over wage deductions

Amosun, Labour end rift over wage deductions

The two-week acrimony between the Ogun State government and labour leaders in the state has been resolved.

The state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and labour chiefs in the state have reached an understanding on the controversy relating to workers’ cooperative deductions, unremitted contributory pension scheme and gratuity.

This followed a meeting with the Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, Akeem Ambali, and his counterparts in the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC), Abiodun Olakanmi, held last week at the governor’s office.

At the end of the meeting, the labour leaders said they were satisfied with the facts presented by the government about the financial situation of the state.

The governor, who also spoke to journalists, disclosed that the state got about N1 billion from the federation account for the month of February, while its wage bill stood at over N9 billion monthly.

He said, “We have seen the financial position of our state and it is not just Ogun State. The economy is down. For example this month, the allocation that came to the state is almost N1 billion and our commitment, the one that we can safely say that ‘this is just for personnel’ either for civil service, public service, house of assembly and our workers, is about N8.4 billion and there are some we must do which put the money at over N9 billion monthly.

“This month alone, all that we were given as a state is over about N1 billion and the local government got about N1.4 billion. Why I speak on local government all of the time is because they don’t have anywhere else to go. If the total that was given to local governments this month is about N1.4 billion, the primary teachers’ salary if we have to pay is about N2 billion. That mean, there is a problem and of course and we are not magicians.”

In his comment, the NLC boss said: “We had a very instructive meeting and I want to commend the government. For the first time, we were down to earth with one another and facts were presented. We looked at it and the labour also presented some credible facts to the government and at the end of the day, we agreed that government should go back and do some assignment while labour should also do its own part.”

  • Learn from Jesus, Amosun charges

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has urged Christians to pattern their lives after Jesus Christ.

In an Easter message signed by his Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Adejuwon Soyinka, Amosun urged Nigerians to learn from the life of selfless service and love by Jesus Christ.

He said this was exemplified by the sacrifice made by Christ when he was crucified.

Amosun advised Christians to always seek to provide selfless service to humanity just as Christ demonstrated through his death and resurrection.

According to him:  “When we show love and offer selfless service just as Christ did, then our nation and indeed the world we live in will be a better place for all of us.”

Amosun wades into Alake, Awujale feud

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun may have waded into the festering rumble between the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo and the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona.

There have been exchange biting words between the two prominent Yoruba traditional rulers over the ranking of the Obas by the Alake.

Last Monday, the Alake through 22 Egba chiefs, including 15 Ogboni chiefs, insisted that the Awujale remained the least in the echelon of status among major Yoruba traditional rulers.

The Alake said his earlier listing of the Awujale as occupying the last position after the quartet of the Oni of Ife, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba of Benin and Alake of Egbaland, “was supported by documentary evidence and therefore stands by his position”.

According to the Egba Paramount ruler, the ranking of the Yoruba Traditional Rulers was carried out in 1937 by the then Ooni of Ife.

This followed Oba Adetona’s last Thursday claims among other things that the Alake was a junior chief in Egba forest under Alaafin who fled to Ibadan and that Alake is also of the same status with some Ijebu Obas like the Ebumawe of Ago – Iwoye who are under his(Adetona) jurisdiction.

The Awujale made the remarks in Lagos during the launch of an Endowment Fund for a Chair at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago – Iwoye,  in reply to an earlier ranking of the Yoruba obas by Alake which placed him at the tail end on the hierarchy.

But yesterday, Amosun, Oba Adetona and Oba Gbadebo met privately for about 75 minutes at the Oke – Mosan Governor’s Office, Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

Details of what transpired were kept away from reporters when they emerged at about 3:45pm.

Even when prodded several times by reporters to say what happened, all of them responded in general terms.

Amosun said the monarchs were in his office to deliberate on how to keep Ogun more peaceful and vaguely blamed the press for the negative reportage of the matter.

He said: “I don’t you to go and write anything out of context. Yes, we are here, our fathers are here to see me. Of course, we deliberated on so many things.

“Don’t forget that this would be the first time I would have the opportunity to show my appreciation for the 40th anniversary celebration – so, it’s an opportunity for me to still show that.

“So, if you think you want to ask that what is the outcome, outcome of what? We have come here to deliberate and as always, it’s always a pleasure for me to have our fathers around here.

“These (you) are the people writing the thing. Don’t just sit somewhere and write. But this one, there is nothing like ranking of Obas.

“We know ourselves. Our fathers they have ways, even before the advent of all these colonials and what have you we have ways of how we live in harmony and I think we will continue to do that.

“Don’t forget, and I’m saying this again with all due humility and sense of responsibility, that in the context of we Yoruba, we know our pre-eminence status. Those of us from Ogun State, so we want to keep up with that tradition. We are not going to fan any ember of disunity.

“What we are known for in Ogun State is that all of us are one and we are still one. Indeed, in the comity of the Yoruba, we know what we do, we know what we stand for and we will continue to do that.

“You know I told you that they are here to ensure there is peace and harmony in Ogun State. These are parts of the things they have come to discuss with me. “Unless, you are now saying that we should discuss what we considered to be classified openly. But our Kabiyesis are here; they can say maybe hello to you.”

AAwujale said there was no problem and that he merely came to say hello when asked why he was in Oke – Mosan Governor’s Office.

“I want to say hello to you….there is no problem gentlemen, please. Thank you very much,” he said.

For Alake, he was in Oke – Mosan to see Governor Amosun for many things and not for issues regarding Obas’ ranking.

“I have come to see my governor for many things, including the strike actioný of the workers, and I’m very sure they would go back to work very soon by the grace of God,” Alake said.

  • NLC to Amosun: drop ‘no work, no pay’ plan

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the weekend warned Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun against implementing his “no work, no pay” threat on striking workers.

It said the strike followed the government’s failure to implement the agreement  it had with the workers.

Deputy President of the Congress and National President of Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) Kiri Mohammed said the governor should understand that an agreement it had with the workers cannot be jettisoned.

Kiri, who is also the chairman of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (Trade Union side), said the workers are on strike due to the government’s failure to pay “full salaries and other deductions”.

He said: “The attention of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council has been drawn to the ongoing strike by public servants in Ogun State.

“The Council discovered that the bone of contention  was the government’s failure to implement the Memorandum of Understanding reached with the leadership of Ogun State Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (Trade union side).

“Council noted that the government has persistently failed to remit its percentage share of the contributory pension and the deductions from workers salaries to the Pension Fund Administrators as provided in 2004 Pension Act as amended.

“Council also observed that despite the bailout fund Ogun State received from the Federal Government, the state could only pay June 2015 salary in full.

“The Council unequivocally condemns the payment of salaries haphazardly and calls on the government to implement the agreement signed with the State Joint Public Service Negotiating Council.”

He maintained that the Buhari administration deserved the support of all Nigerians, including Organised Labour, to salvage the country from the severe economic situation.

Septuagenarian advises Amosun to transform rural areas

Elder statesman and community leader, Otunba Sylvester Bakare has urged Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun to transform the rural areas in order to make life better for the people. He said the rural communities lack basic amenities.

Bakare, who spoke during his 80th birthday celebration at his country home, Oki Igbode, Imobi, Ijebu-East Local Government Area expressed satisfaction that the governor has brought remarkable progress to Ogun.

He said the rural communities were neglected for too long, noting that Amosun’s administration has the capacity to re-enact the same developmental stride in rural communities as he did in opening up urban areas.

Recalling efforts to make impact in community development, he said he took up the challenge of community development when he was sponsored to the National Assembly in 1992.

“I was first sponsored to the House of Representatives, but it was a short service. We were sworn in in October 1992 but the Military sacked us in December same year.

“In 1992, my people called on me again to represent them at the Ogun State House of Assembly.  I contested the election and won and I was sworn in. I was there for over a year before the military struck again.

“I thank God for the development I was able to attract to my constituency during the period and with the help of former  Governor Olusegun Osoba, his Deputy, Rafiu Ogunleye, 18km road was awarded and constructed. I thank God because the road was the only major project that has brought development to this area,” he said.

Bakare said the people would fare better when they enjoy essential services, noting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has proved that it was a government that cares for the welfare of the people.

“I will love to see essential services delivered to the people by the present government. Such services include stable electricity and water supply, development in agriculture, employment opportunities for our children who graduate out of schools yearly and massive empowerment for the people,” he said.

He maintained that attaining 80 was fulfilling, stressing that it equally had its challenges.

“It is years of hot weather, hard work, survival, challenges, years of showing appreciation to God, having achieved all these. By my own standard, I believed I have arrived. I never believed I could come this far but God has led me all through the odds of life,” he said.Bakare cutting his 80th birthday cake

  • …CNPP congratulates Wike, Umahi, Amosun

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has congratulated the four governors, whose elections were recently upheld by the Supreme Court,  describing the development as another milestone in the strengthening of Nigeria’s democracy.

CNPP described the affirmation of the elections of Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Ibikunle Amosun of Oyo State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, as a confirmation that the judiciary is playing its role as the arbiter in the nation’s democracy.

A statement issued by CNPP Chairman, Alhaji Balarabe Musa said: “all parties to the litigations that led the rulings should now team up for the development of their respective states since their contest for public office was to serve the people in the first place.

“CNPP will continue to demand for improvement to the electoral process to ensure that those who win elections are able to concentrate on governance instead of spending several months or even years distracted in courts.”

The statement disclosed that CNPP is keenly watching to see how the Supreme Court will rule on other pending governorship elections petitions before it as it will not accept anything that goes contrary to the will of the people.
