  • Restore MAPOLY’s lost glory, Amosun urges council

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has charged the new Governing Council of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, to restore the institution to its glorious past.

Speaking at the inauguration of the council in Abeokuta, Amosun urged its members to set in motion modalities for resuscitating the institution because of the importance the state places on education.

“Out of all our cardinal programmes, education is the most important. It drives all other sectors and that is why we must get our tertiary institutions right as it is the bedrock of development,” he said.

He charged members of the council, which has school proprietor, Alaba Lawson as Chairman, to bring to bear all their experiences in the discharge of their duties towards the development of the polytechnic.

“As a government, we will support you to succeed. We do not need to get involved, except on few occasions when we need to interface with each other,” Amosun said.

He explained that the government had to delay the constitution of the council in order to search for credible people that will turn around the fortunes of the institution.

Responding, MrsLawson assured the governor that the Council would work hard to return MAPOLY to the good old days of academic excellence.

The new Rector of the institution, Prof Oludele Itiola was until his appointment a Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Ibadan.

Amosun, according to a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mrs Funmi Wakama, noted that Mandela’s life was one that truly ran its full course.

“His 27-year imprisonment in the course of struggle for end of oppression of the blacks by white minority, eventual release from incaceration following the collapse of apartheid and emergence as the first black South African President in a multi-party democracy are milestone events that will remain indelible in the annals of the world,” the governor said.

Amosun noted that Mandela’s discountenance of vengeance against officials of the former apartheid government and voluntary refusal to seek a second term in office “are among the qualities that places him in the pantheon of great leaders.”

He expressed the hope that leaders across the globe, especially in Nigeria would imbibe the sterling qualities of Nelson Mandela.

Why Amosun shelved sack of LG chairmen

But for the intervention of some leaders of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and close aides, Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, would have relieved a few chairmen of local governments in the state of their jobs a few days ago. Sources disclosed that in the last few months, the governor had been inundated with reports of alleged official misdemeanor of the LG bosses, in addition to their dictatorial tendencies and failure to carry along party leaders and members in their domains.

Ripples learnt that some days ago, Amosun resolved to sack the LG bosses and had given instruction to that effect. However, his Special Adviser on Politics, Tunji Egbetokun, reportedly pleaded with the governor to exercise restraint on the issue in order to allow for broad consultations with party stakeholders. Egbetokun, who was the former Speaker of the State House of Assembly in the last dispensation, also convinced the governor on the need to give the concerned LG chairmen a second chance.

The Remo Group (TRG), a socio-cultural organisation, has commended Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Governor of Ogun State, over what it called his laudable infrastructural development of the state within his two years and a half in office.

The group, which praised the current administration’s choice of projects, said it is satisfied with the effort of the government so far in areas such as road construction, education, agriculture and urban renewal.

In a communiqué issued after its third leadership congress, held in Ilishan-Remo, read out to reporters by its Director of Organisation, Otunba Lanre Oshin, the group also commended the state government for providing armoured tanks and other vehicles for the police and other security outfits in the state.

“TRG also gives kudos to the government for providing vigilance groups across the state and equipping the groups adequately. The effort of the vigilance groups at complementing the police in combating crimes in the state today is noteworthy.

“The provision of armoured tanks and other security vehicles for the police and other security agencies in the state is also commendable. We also thank the government for the numerous road projects it has embarked on across the state.

“Of special interest and joy to us are the roads constructed and under construction in Sagamu and other towns in Remo-land. With these road projects, the governor is helping a great deal to further open up our ancestral home to much needed development and growth.

“We equally praise the administration for retaining and adequately funding the State Polytechnic at Saapade. We urge the government to continue in its stride towards making the institution more befitting of its status,” the communiqué read. It added, “TRG is, however, using this medium to tell the governor that there is still more work to be done. We urge Governor Ibikunle Amosun and his government to hurry up in the repairs and reconstruction of all dilapidated roads within Remo-land as well as hasten up the provision of amenities for rural communities in the area,” the group said.

  • Amosun urges MDAs to boost IGR

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has urged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA) to explore new ways of increasing their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) without inconveniencing the people.

Amosun spoke yesterday in Abeokuta at the opening of a two-day Treasury Board meeting on the 2014 budget.

He said the call became imperative to augment the shortfall in federal allocation in recent times.

Amosun said though the state government had limited access to fund, it believed things must be done according to world best practices.

Hinting that next year’s budget might be slightly lower than this year’s, the governor said the need for effective budgeting cannot be over-emphasised to achieve the government’s vision.

The governor said: “As MDAs present their budgets, they must think of how much they can generate. We have limited access to funds and are going to have a reduced budget for obvious reasons.”

The governor assured them that suggestions made at the meeting would be considered in the preparation of the 2014 budget.

He said efforts to engage the youth in agriculture were yielding results, adding that many unemployed youths were presently engaged at farm settlements across the state.

On the request for the construction of more roads, schools and hospitals, Amosun said plans were underway to do so.

On environmental cleanliness, he warned residents against indiscriminate refuse disposal, stressing that it can cause environmental and health hazards.

He urged them to always dispose refuse in bins and at designated collection centres.

Assuring the people that his administration would continue to protest their interest, Amosun said: “We shall remain focused in our mission to make positive impact in the lives of our people. I assure you that this administration will not leave any of the on-going projects uncompleted. Our actions and efforts in the past 29 months have been channelled towards the realisation of this great vision.”

He said his administration had showed that its ‘mission to rebuild’ was not just another government propaganda but an elaborate master plan to bring about socio-economic progress.

The governor said despite challenges caused by dwindling resources from the Federation Account, the government was committed to the successful implementation of its five-point agenda.

He said: “We have no doubt that we are on course. We shall deliver on our promises. We have recorded some remarkable achievements this year and we are poised to consolidate on them in 2014.“

  • Aregbesola, Fayemi, Amosun advocate religious tolerance

Aregbesola, Fayemi, Amosun advocate religious tolerance

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has urged Muslims to live in peace and tolerate people of other faiths.

He said the nation critically needs peace security and cooperation among its diverse people.

Aregbesola urged adherents of all religions to uphold the sacredness of human life, saying God did not command or appoint anyone as judge in any scripture to take the life of another under the guise of protecting any faith.

He said he wondered why any human being should exhibit such cruelty to a fellow human.

Aregbesola said leaders must exhibit purposeful leadership and prudent management of resources to curb the worrisome deterioration in nearly all spheres of the nation’s life.

He identified corruption in high places and divisive tendencies among ethnic groups as disease, “which we must cure completely for us to get our development agenda right”.

The governor said: “It baffles me that religion, which should unite people, is dividing us in this country. I wonder why people must kill each other in the name of religion.

“As Muslims, we are not to judge our fellow man. We should leave judgment to God who created us all. Why must people kill in the name of God? Why must people act God? Why must they pre-empt what their creator will do?

“A Muslim must be tolerant, trustworthy, dependable and peace-loving. He must be a beacon of peace, sterling example of humankind and worthy of emulation.”

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi urged Muslims to remain steadfast in their faith and pray for a peaceful governorship election next year.

Fayemi described the festival as an important landmark in the Islamic calendar. He urged Muslims not to be carried away by the celebration but to imbibe the lessons of the festivals.

He said: “Sacrificing one’s only son in obedience to the wish of Allah can be very painful, but the Prophet Ibrahim gained a lot by choosing to obey Allah and damn the consequences. We should always be ready to make sacrifices, which may be unpalatable at present, but gainful and sweet in the nearest future.

“I urge Muslims to draw lessons from the humility, piety, devotion and sacrifice exhibited by both Prophet Ibrahim and his son, Ishmael.”

The governor wished Muslim pilgrims on hajj a safe return from Saudi Arabia.

Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun urged Muslims to obey God always, so that they can receive bountiful rewards from Him.

He said: “Nigeria can overcome its current challenges and attain its goal of a developed and prosperous nation, if all citizens live in total obedience to the will of God.”

Amosun urged the faithful to continuously demonstrate the cardinal tenets of Islam by living in peace with their neighbours and being their brothers’ keepers.

He wished them a happy celebration.
