Sambasa Nzeribe recounts journey to AMVCA trophy

From losing both parents at infancy to benefiting from the orphan’s scheme of St Mary’s Catholic Church, Isolo, Lagos, AMVCA 2017 Best Actor, Sambasa Nzeribe said he has had a lot to deal with in life, but has never given up.

Speaking with The Nation at the recently held award ceremony where he won the ‘Best Actor in a Drama’, he recalled how in his third year at the Creative Arts Department of the University of Lagos, he went for his first audition but didn’t get cast.

The intervening events have led to his present feat in the film industry.

“When I heard the names of those who were nominated for my category, I decided to let it go because I saw it as an achievement to be in same category with Uncle Olu Jacobs, RMD and Ramsey Nouah. I know when they started their acting careers; I could not even give the proper definition of who an actor is. I was still a child,” he said.

However, friends and colleagues encouraged him to campaign since he has nothing to lose in doing that

“I closed my eyes when they were calling that category. I was like ‘how’? I give glory to God. The best thing my late mum introduced me to is God. It all started after losing my father, she took refuge in the church. She was a primary school teacher at Charismatic Renewal of St Mary’s Isolo. They turned her into the children ministry and drama teacher. She always dragged me along for the children rehearsals,” he stated.

He recalls the first time he met Ramsey Nouah; “I was a child who was pushed to the corner and promised sweets if I don’t make noise. He was doing a shooting for ‘Black Arrow’ in an empty location in Isolo called Friday Club. The camera was placed on the floor and the director asked the crew to jump over it. Subconsciously, it has affected me.”

  • …When AMVCA is desirable than the OON

…When AMVCA is desirable than the OON

One memorable event that marked the last moments of veteran actress, Bukky Ajayi on earth was the ‘Industry Merit Award’ given to her by the organisers of Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) during this year’s edition which held on March 5, at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. The emotions that came from receiving that award, especially following Bukky Ajayi’s acceptance speech, appear to be more honourable than the Federal Government’s National Honours which she never bagged during her lifetime.

Most people, while reacting to the news of her death, were glad that AMVCA thought it wise to honour the actress during her lifetime. One of such people was a promoter of the film industry and CEO of Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), Peace Anyiam-Osigwe who said in a group chat: “God bless AMVCA for Honouring Aunty Bukky Ajayi this year. It was good she was celebrated before she departed.”

Her emotional acceptance speech, which she rendered during the AMVCAs also resonated shortly after news of her demise, with many reposting her speech with the hashtag impression.

President of Independent Television Practitioners Association of Nigeria (ITPAN) Osezuah Imobhio was one of those who dug up her speech: “‘All these people…you mean you are all standing for me? Oh..Oh…Please if I have done anything wrong to you in the past, please forgive me…and I too have forgiven those who have wronged me.”

According to Imobhio, “These golden words were attributed to her. When our own time comes what will the world quote us saying? A lesson from a woman with golden heart. Adieu, Aunty Bukky!”

Filmmaker and blogger Charles Novia who also commented said, “Her acceptance speech at the AMVCAs was the most moving I have seen for a long time. It was a great honour for her. She died happy.”

Still on late Aunty Bukky’s speech, Ms Chioma Ude, Founder/CEO of Africa International Film Festival said, “Her speech moved me to tears.  AMVCA honoured her at the right time. May her soul rest in peace.”

Fred Amata said: “What moved most to tears that day when she was honoured by the AMVCA  was she seemed to be saying Goodbye  to All.  Aunty Bukky you made your mark on the sands of time. Adieu!”

Away from her AMVCA speech, many held the late thespian in high esteem for her artistry and professional conducts.

Remi Raji said: “I remember Auntie Bukky for her tenacity and commitment to the art. Her unscripted last award speech is the stuff of simple gracefulness, a sincere appreciation to the industry that turned her to a household name. Such unblemished beauty… Rest in Peace.”

Dele Morakinyo said: “Oh! In Aunty Bukky we just lost a theatre icon, an example in commitment and discipline on and off set. Her matronly visage during production never ceased to inspire! Sun re o, aunty!”

Recall that not long after the AMVCA recognition, Joke Silva led a group of artistes on June 15, 2016 to visit the departed actress at home. Morakinyo thinks that gesture would be one of her fondest recollections as she journeys back to her creator.
