    Four kids, five others die, 10 injured in Lagos auto crash

    Nine persons, including four children were on Friday morning confirmed dead after a commercial bus collided with a heavy duty truck in Lagos.

    About 10 other injured occupants of the Toyota Hiace bus marked KT 715YG from Katsin, were rushed to the hospital.

    It was learnt that the accident which occurred at Fadeyi axis of Ikorodu road at about 5am caused traffic congestion on the expressway.

    It was learnt that the bus driver was over speeding and lost control, hitting a culvert.

    The vehicle, it was learnt somersaulted and veered to the other side of the road, before it rammed into a truck.

    It took the intervention of personnel of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the police, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and passers-by to rescue some of the victims trapped in the vehicle.

    The General Manager LASEMA Michael Akindele attributed the accident to carelessness.

    “A total number of nine people lost their lives in the incident. Five adults (four male and a female) and four children ( two male, two female). Ten others sustained injuries and were taken to the Emergency Trauma Centre at the Toll Gate.

    “Drivers should be cautious and avoid over speeding as well as comply with road traffic codes to prevent unnecessary accident that may lead to loss of lives,” he said.

    Tragedy struck the camp of Plateau Utd Football Club of Jos following the death of petit winger,Simon Shehu in a fatal motor accident which occured yesterday on his way from Jos to Kaduna to put finishing touches to his wedding scheduled for this weekend in Kaduna.

    The accident according to the General Manager of the club, Pius Dada happened along Kafancha/Kaduna road.

    He said there were four occupants in the late player’s  Ford 4 wheel car and while others sustained serious injuries,the Plateau United star was said to have died on the spot.

    SportingLife gathered that the late player joined Plateau Utd two seasons ago from El Kanemi Warrious and was part of the team that helped the Jos based team to gain promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) this season.

    FOUR FUTA STUDENTS KILLED IN ONDO CRASH

    Four undergraduates of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Ondo state yesterday died in an auto crash along the Ilesa-Akure express road.

    The accident occurred at Ibule village about one kilometre to FUTA North gate with many other students of the university injured.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state Police

    command Femi Joseph confirmed the accident, attributing it to over speeding.

    He said some students of the university travelling to Ibadan, Oyo state for a religious programme were involved in the ghastly motor accident.

    The PPRO said the accident which involved a Toyota hiace bus and a motorcycle was caused by over speed on the part of the driver of the bus.

    He stated the deceased students have been deposited at the morgue while the injured were receiving treatments at different hospitals in the state.

    The Public Relations Officer of the University Olu Adegbenro said the students were on a private religious trip when the accident happened.

    He said the management of the university was already aware of the accident and was relating with the Police on the matter.

    He commiserated with the families of the deceased students and their colleagues.

    Six Ekiti doctors die on Kaduna-Abuja road crash

    Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ekiti State branch, Dr. John Akinbote has said that lack of immediate proper medical attention was  responsible for the death of six Ekiti State medical doctors that died in auto crash Sunday night along Abuja-Kaduna express way.

    Dr. Akinbote, disclosed this while speaking with journalists on his hospital bed at Saint Gerald’s Catholic Hospital, where other seven surviving doctors are currently receiving treatment.

    He said, “Those that died would have survived if we got good medical attention from the point of the accident to the Doka General Hospital in Kaduna.

    “It became even worst, when we got to Doka Hospital, there was no single Doctor to attend to us and the only nurse on duty had no first aid facilities to administer treatment.

    “I am sure, if personnel of Federal Road Safety, FRSC that took us to Doka Hospital and the nurse on duty had medical facilities to give first aid treatment, our doctors and driver wouldn’t have died.”

    According to two of the survivors, who spoke to journalists at Saint Gerald’s Catholic Hospital, Kaduna, they were 13 Doctors and a driver in an 18-seater vehicle, but after the accident occurred six doctors and a driver died.

    The Doctors, it was gathered, left Ekiti on Saturday to attend the Nigeria Medical Association delegates’ conference in Sokoto, but were sent to early grave after the vehicle’s tyre bursted, hit the side breakers and somersaulted severally before it stopped.

    One of the survivors, Dr. Stephen Ayosanmi who spoke to journalists from his hospital bed at St. Gerald, said a tyre burst caused the accident.

    It was also gathered that the accident occured at the spot where former Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, James Ocholi had a similar auto crash and died along with his wife and a son.

    Those who lost their lives in the auto crash included Dr. Alade Sani, Dr. OJ Taiwo, Dr. Akinyele Lexy, Dr.Ogunseye, Dr. Olagide, Dr. Adeniyi James, and Mr. Ajibola (DRIVER).

    Meanwhile, Senator Shehu Sani representing Kaduna Central District under the umbrella of All Progressives Congress (APC) who visited the surviving Doctors at the hospital condoled with the Ekiti State Government and NMA, just as he urged the Federal government to fix all bad portions of the road to forestall future recurrence.

    Anglican priest, 12 others perish in Delta auto crash

    Thirteen persons, including a priest, yesterday lost their lives in a multiple auto accident near Asaba, the Delta State Capital.

    The vehicles involved include a Ford bus, with registration number GWK 684 XA, belonging to the Christ Anglican Church, Ibusa; a Mitsubishi L300, with registration number BJ 831 AKD; a commercial bus; and a Honda car, with registration number BEN 413 CF.

     The death of the Anglican priest, Rev Stanley Ejiniwe, it was learnt, threw the entire Asaba Diocese of the Anglican Communion into mourning.

     The Nation gathered that four victims of the crash are receiving treatment at St. Joseph Catholic Hospital and St. Rebecca hospital both in Asaba, while the dead-  11 males and two females, have been deposited at the General Hospital, Ibusa.

     The driver of the commercial bus and his wife reportedly died in the crash, according to an eye witness, who added that the cleric, who was recently transferred to Christ Anglican Church, Ibusa, was alone in the Ford bus belonging to his parish.

     The eyewitness stated further that the priest was descending the hills from Ibusa end, while the commercial bus was ascending the hill.

    The Honda car, also said to be coming from Ibusa and speeding, ran into the vehicles.

     Confirming the report on Friday, the state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Rindom Kumven, blamed the crash on over-speeding and poor visibility.

  • Army general dead, others injured in auto crash

    The General Officer Commanding  (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Muhammed Aliyu,  has been involved in a ghastly auto crash along Damaturu, Maiduguri road in Yobe  State with some other officers.

    One General is confirmed dead with the GOC critically injured. The identity of the dead General is yet to be ascertained.

    The military were conveying the injured GOC to Jos, Plateau State for better medical attention.

    Yobe State Deputy Governor, Abubakar Aliyu, the Secretary to the State Government, Baba Malam Wali, State Police Commissioner, Zanna Muhammed were among the early sympathisers at the General Sani Abacha Specialist hospital where the victims were brought.

  • Four Catholic nuns killed in Cross River auto crash

    Four reverend sisters of the Catholic Church were killed in autocrash along the Nkarasi/Alok axis of the Ikom/Ogoja highway in Cross River State on Tuesday, The Nation gathered Wednesday.

    Two other reverend sisters, who were critically injured, were rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Ikom.

    The six reverend sisters were in a Toyota Sienna car from Ogoja local government area to Biase local government, when the unfortunate incident occurred, it was learnt.

    The vehicle was driven by one of the Sisters.

    An eyewitness said the accident occurred when a truck carrying soft drinks lost control and veered into their lane causing a head on collision.

    Also on Monday a truck filled with granite lost control along 8 Miles in Calabar and veered off the road, killing four people.

    Another unfortunate accident occurred along the Beebobsco axis of the Murtala Mohammed Highway in Calabar on Tuesday, when a bus caught fire killing one man.

    An eye witness said the bus suddenly caught fire, but all the passengers managed to escape, except the ill-fated man, who was believed to have a bad led and sitting close to the petrol tank.

    Aggrieved youths in Iwaro-Oka,Akoko Southwest local government of Ondo state Thursday barricaded the ever busy Oka-Akoko-Abuja road in protest against the incessant carnage on the highway.

    Sources said a trailer lost control at Oke-Maria and killed a man identified as Sunday Mogaji inside his house.

    This development reportedly gingered the irate youths in the area to troop out in anger and blocked the road against motorists plying the major highway.

    According to a youth leader, Idowu Komolafe “we are not happy with the daily occurrence of road mishaps at Oke-Maria which had already claimed many lives without remedy-

    “We have been pleading with the authorities concerned to find solution to the rampant carnage,but no success.

    “It is unfortunate that many innocent lives have been wasted on regular basis and youths are mostly the victims, we cannot continue like this“

    The Olubaka of Oka-Akoko, Oba Adebori Adeleye symphatised with the victims, urging relevant agencies to assist in solving the problem.

    The Unit Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC)Jimoh Basiru confirmed that one person died, while his corpse has been deposited at Ikare-Akoko Specialist Hospital.

    The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed that seven people sustained injuries in a multiple auto crash at Ama Brewery Junction on the 9th Mile-Nsukka highway in Enugu State.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, said that the incident, which happened at about 7 p.m. on Friday, involved a trailer, Highlander jeep and two other cars.

    Amaraizu said, however, that no live was lost at the scene of the incident.

    “At least seven persons sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to different hospitals after the crash.

    “The team of rescuers included the police, Federal Road Safety Commission and some members of the public,’’ he stated.

    The PPRO said that the cause of the accident was yet to be determined, noting however, that the police had commenced investigation.

    Tanker driver dies in Ogun auto crash

    The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Ota, Ogun, said one person died, while six others sustained various degrees of injuries in an accident involving a petrol tanker and four vehicles at Owode Junction on Saturday.

    The Unit Commander of FRSC, Mr Leye Adegboyega, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota that the accident occurred around 5.30a.m due to the carelessness of the tanker driver.

    According to him, a loaded petrol tanker coming from Lagos and heading to Abeokuta lost control and ram into four vehicles which catch fire immediately.

    He said that the fire from the tanker spread to the neighbouring houses and property worth million of naira was lost in the inferno.

    Adegboyega said that the driver of the tanker, whose name was Wale Olaitan, lost his life while six others including four male and two female sustained various degrees of injuries.

    ”The corpse of the victim had been deposited at the mortuary, Ifo General hospital, Ogun, while others victims were referred to Federal Medical Centre, Idl-Aba, Abeokuta, for an intensive treatment, ‘’ he said.

    He appealed to the Federal, Lagos and Ogun state governments to overhaul the Owode road to prevent re-occurrence of such incident in order to save lives and property.
