Eight die in Cross River auto crash

No fewer than eight persons were killed yesterday in a fatal auto crash along the Okurikang axis of the Calabar-Itu highway in Cross River State.

Eye witnesses said the accident involved a truck and four other vehicles.

The accident, which occurred at about 10.30am, brings to 43 the number of lives that have been lost on the federal highway in the past eight weeks.

The eye witness said the driver of the truck, who was carrying scraps and heading to Aba, lost control and rammed into four other cars, killing some of the occupants.

The sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) in Cross River State, Mr. Ikechukwu Igwe, confirmed the incident, saying, “five vehicles were involved, a truck and four other vehicles, and by the time we got there, two had already been removed.

“On the whole, eight people died and three people were left injured. We took the three injured people to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) first, and on our way back, we picked the dead ones. We noticed that the police had already evacuated the dead bodies. But our men are there clearing the road and we have made some recoveries, including money.”

According to him, the dead include, “one female adult and seven male adults died, while two male adults and two female adults are in the hospital receiving treatment.”

On the immediate cause of the accident, Igwe said, “for the fact that they said a truck was involved means that he was reckless. You know how they drive along that road. Right now, the vehicles are in the bush. For the fact that he ran into all the four vehicles, it is either he lost control or he was speeding, but I am going to get the details.”

He appealed to motorists plying the road to be patient, especially during the last quarter of the year.

12 Ogun varsity students die in auto crash

More than 12 students of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago -Iwoye, Ogun State were crushed to death yesterday when a container fell on the passenger bus conveying them.

Many others were seriously injured in the mishap, which occurred at the Shagamu section of the Lagos/Benin Expressway.

Our correspondent gathered that the unlatched 20-feet container fell off a moving truck as the driver tried to avoid an obstruction while driving against the direction of traffic.

The container with a Lagos registration number BDG 779 XE was said to have fallen on the roof of the Toyota Hiace bus also with a Lagos registration number XV 311 MUS a few metres away from the gate of a plastic manufacturing company near Ilisha Remo junction.

It was learnt that the OOU students were travelling to Lagos State for the weekend when they met their untimely death.

The Ijebu-Ode Commander of Ogun State Traffic Management and Compliance Agency (TRACE), Tommy Hamzat, told reporters that the driver of the container laden truck drove against the traffic.

Hamzat added that the fact that the truck was driving on the wrong side of the road made it difficult for the driver of the passenger bus to notice it, hence the two vehicles collided.

He said: “I was coming from the Sagamu end when I saw the accident and hurriedly parked my car. I ran there to see if the passengers but, unfortunately, all the occupants, were dead, including the driver,.

“The bus was facing Lagos, though I don’t know where it was coming from. The truck carrying the container was coming from the Sagamu end but was driving against the traffic and that resulted in the collision that claimed the lives of the innocent students.”

Also, the TRACE Commander in Sagamu, Kehinde Arode, who confirmed the death of 12 people, said that one other person was badly injured.

Arode said that the injured victim had been taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu, while the remains of the dead were deposited in the morgue of the hospital.

  • Eleven dead in Kwara road crash

Auto accident Wednesday claimed the lives of no fewer than eleven people in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.

The accident was allegedly caused by head on collision between a Toyota Hiace bus and Turbo truck in Oko-Olowo along Ilorin/Mokwa Road, Ilorin outstirk.

Those that died were inside the bus with registration number GA 52 XA, while eight others sustained serious injuries. The trailer turbo was marked XA 939 GZA.

The single lane road is one of the busiest roads in Nigeria as it remains the shortest link between the Northern part of Nigeria and the people of South West geo political belt.

The road is plied daily by heavily loaded trailers and commercial buses on trading missions.

The road is laden with dangerous bends, making overtaking dangerous due to apparent poor visibility occasioned by the bends.

The sector commander of the FRSC in Kwara state Mary Wakawa confirmed the accident, adding the accident occurred at about 2am.

It was gathered that the bus was heading to an unnamed state in the northern part of the country while the truck was said to be coming from Kebbi state to Oyo state when the accident happened.

A farmer said that; “we heard a big bang around 2am inside our hut and sporadic wailing of human beings but none of us could come out to verify the true situation until dawn when we got to the horrible scene.”

When our reporter visited the scene at 7:05am, congealed human blood was noticed on the road just as food stuff and clothes littered the scene and its perimeter.

Also, men of the FRSC were clearing the blocked road forcing motorists to drive at snail speed.

The FRSC men were packing badly mutilated bodies of the victims inside a Hilux van just as eight injured persons with two of them suspected to have sustained severe spinal cord injuries were carefully put inside FRSC’s ambulance.

The two vehicles later headed to the direction of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin.

Wakawa said that the dead toll was high because of the nature of the accident and the time of its occurrence which prevented any prompt rescuing operation.

She said: “We had always cautioned motorists against night travelling. The inherent dangers in it far outweigh whatever gains they claim are in it. We will not relent on this campaign until we get the needed results.

“We also want to use this opportunity to warn drivers against reckless driving. It does no one any good. On this side, a careful driver may be there but his care is incomplete until the other road users on the other side are equally careful. We should also warn those thinking that Juju can save them when accidents occur.”
