    How Omoni Oboli escaped auto crash

    What could have been a disaster was averted on Sunday when Nollywood diva and mother of three, Omoni Oboli escaped what could have resulted in a serious car crash. The actress, on Monday, narrated her ordeal via Instagram, stating how she narrowly escaped a ghastly motor accident.

    Asking fans to join her in praising God, she disclosed that she was riding at top speed with a friend, Adeoye, when a careless driver suddenly crossed their lane.

    “We swerved and for a minute, we lost control of our car. How we managed to come back on track is pure God. I just kept screaming ‘The blood of Jesus.’ We were badly shaken but thankful that it was only our nerves that were hurt. I am thankful for the blood of the Lamb! Stay safe fam! #Iamblessed #Iamthankful #Istaywinning #Jesustookthewheel,” she wrote.

    It will be recalled that on April 22, Omoni’s husband, Nnamdi threw a surprise birthday party for her, a ceremony which was attended by her close friends and associates.

    Three die in Ondo auto crash

    Three persons, including two siblings, died yesterday in an accident involving a bus and a motorcycle at Etioro-Akoko in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

    The accident, according to an eyewitness, was caused by over speeding.

    It was gathered that the bus, coming from Abuja, crushed a commercial motorcycle conveying three persons to Etioro-Akoko. They died instantly.

    It was learnt that the driver of the commercial bus carried some passengers on the road and officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) pursued him to Etioro-Akoko.

    Attempts to arrest the NURTW officials failed as they ran away immediately they heard of the accident.

    The Unit Commander of the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ikare, Jimoh Basiru, confirmed the accident.

    He said the bodies had been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital, Ikare, while the commercial bus was impounded and the driver handed over to the police.

    Basiru advised drivers to obey constituted authorities.

  • Student killed, others injured in kogi auto crash

    A student of Covenant Secondary School, Lokoja, kogi State, died on Sunday, while several others sustained varying degree of injuries in an accident that happened within the metropolis.

    The student, Jalekaiye Dominion was said to have died from head injuries and his body has been deposited at the mortuary, while those that sustained injuries were said to be receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja.

    It was gathered that 50 boarding students were on their way back to the school after a Sunday service at the Living Faith Church situated around Phase II area, when the accident occurred.

    Eye witness account had it that the state Mass Transit bus conveying the students back to school was hit from the back by a truck that was trying to avoid a pothole along the Murtala Muhammed way.

    In another development about three persons were said to have died while several others sustained injuries in another accident at the Felele end of Lokoja.

    The accident was said to have involved a Dangote Cement Company truck which lost control and veered into the market, ramming into some commercial motorcycles conveying passengers from the market.

    The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) could not be reached for confirmation as his phone was said not to be reachable.

    Auto crash claims nine lives on Akure-Ilesa Expressway

    Nine passengers yesterday died in a fatal auto accident which occurred on Akure-Ilesa Expressway.

    Eyewitnesses told reporters that the accident, which occurred at Ileri junction on the expressway, was caused by high speed.

    It was gathered that seven persons lost their lives on the spot while two others died on the way to the hospital.

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), while confirming the accident, said the accident occurred at 10.30 am when the vehicle, a Toyota Hiace coming from Akure, Ondo State, ran into a ditch.

    The Unit Commander of the FRSC in Ilesa, Mr David Gaya, who confirmed the accident and the death of the victims, said the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), Ile-Ife.

    He said some survivors of the accident were receiving treatment at OAUTH while some were also rushed to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital Osogbo where they were also receiving treatment.

    The accident caused traffic jam along the busy road as motorists had to park their vehicles on the road for several hours.

    The registration number of the vehicle involved in the accident could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report, but it was learnt that officials of the FRSC had towed the vehicle to the Ilesa office of the FRSC.

  • Auto crash claims two in Delta

    Two persons were Friday confirmed dead and three others injured following an auto crash along the Udu Bridge, Udu council area of Delta state.

    The Nation gathered that the tragic accident, involving a green Wolkswagen Passat wagon, with registration number EKP 288 AA, was carrying five passengers including the driver.

    A source said the accident occurred at about 5pm, instantly killing one of the passengers on the spot and another on the way to the hospital.

    According to him, another vehicle, allegedly on high speed, ran into the Passat from behind, causing it to crash on the iron rails of the bridge.

    He said that a young lady, one of the survivors who barely had a scratch on the head, explained that they were a family; the driver was her brother, one of the deceased persons, her mother and another man, her father.

    She could, however, not ascertain the other deceased aged woman’s relationship as she could not contain the shock of the accident.

    As at press time, all victims had been taken to an undisclosed hospital.

    The spokesperson of the Delta state police command, Celestina Kalu (DSP), confirmed the incident.

    Three persons have died in an accident on the Bayelsa State section of the East-West Road.

    It was gathered that eight others were injured in the Wednesday night accident.

    Sources said the accident occurred near the Odi Junction in Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area.

    The two vehicles involved were identified as a Bayelsa Transport Company truck and a commercial passenger bus belonging to Agofure Motors.

    Though the cause of the accident could not be ascertained, some persons attributed it to over-speeding and poor visibility.

    It was gathered that the commercial passenger bus, which was coming from Warri in Delta State and heading for Port Harcourt in Rivers State, collided with the truck.

    Eyewitnesses said the accident may have been caused by over speeding and poor visibility.

    The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Patani General Hospital morgue.

    The state Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Vincent Jack, confirmed the accident but declined further comments.

    Mr Joseph Olusola the unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Ado – Ekiti on Friday confirmed Thursday’s road accident that claimed two lives in Oye.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that two men died in the multiple accidents along Oye – Ilupeju road that involved an articulated truck and five cars.

    The unit commander said six men were victims of the accident.

    He said the driver and conductor of the articulated vehicle died on the spot, and that the four seriously injured men were rushed to a nearby hospital.

    Olusola said that the articulated vehicle with registration number KNE 35 XA was fully loaded with goods, and was going from Ilupeju to Oye.

    He further explained that as the vehicle was descending a steep hill the brake failed and it hit five vehicles before overturning.

    Olusola, who attributed the accident to brake-failure and speeding, called on motorists to make sure their vehicles are in good condition before setting out on a journey.

    He also advised all road users to be vigilant and exercise caution while on the road to avoid crashes.

    Six persons died while five others sustained injuries on Wednesday in an auto crash at Iyanfoworogi village near Ile-Ife, Ife South Local Government Area of Osun.

    Mr Tola Adetoro, the Unit Commander of the FRSC in Ile-Ife, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

    Adetoro said that the accident happened at about 9.00 a.m.  Following a collision between an articulated vehicle marked KTU 51 XJ and a bus with registration number XD 740 GNN.

    He said the accident was caused by the bus driver coming from Ondo axis to Ile-Ife who wrongly overtook the truck in the opposite direction.

    Adetoro said that those who died were two men, two women and two little girls.

    He said his officers as well as those of NSCDC and the police were at the scene of the crash to rescue victims.

    Those injured, he said, were conveyed to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife.

    He added that the remains of the passengers who died were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

    Two persons have died while several were hospitalized in a head on collision between a Ford transit bus and a Volkswagen Passat wagon along the Abakaliki-Enugu expressway.

    It was gathered that the Ford transit car with registration number, XX 225 ENU was conveying passengers from Effium in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State to Abakaliki, the state capital when it collided with the Volkswagen with registration number AKL 520 KC.

    The bus it was learnt was carrying about 23 passengers while the wagon had 3 passengers when the accident occurred near the permanent site campus of Ebonyi State University.

    An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ebonyi State Command who spoke to our reporter in confidence, said that 2 of the passengers, a male and another female, died at the spot while several occupants of the commercial vehicle were also seriously injured in the accident.

    He said that the accident occurred as a result of over speeding and dangerous over-taking adding that because of the over speeding of the driver, he could not control the vehicle and had a head-on collision with the coming vehicle.

    The source said: “the Ford transit vehicle was carrying passengers numbering over 23. The passengers were heading to Abakaliki the Ebonyi State capital from Effuim. The driver was on a very high speed and just at the Permanent site of the Ebonyi State University gate, the Volk-Wagen Passat driver in an attempt to over take another vehicle had a head on collission with the Ford car”.

    “By the time our men got to the scene of the accident, we observed that two of the occupants, a female and a male died at the spot while several others including children sustained various degrees of injuries. From our findings, the passengers were returning to Abakaliki after the weekend.”

    He further stated that the corpse of the deceased was immediately deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki mortuary while those who sustained injuries were also rushed to the same hospital for urgent medical attention.

    According to him: “25 persons were injured, 8 male, 10 female and 7 children. Immediately we got the information of the crash in the late hours of yesterday, we immediately sent our men to the scene.

    “Immediately they got there, they were able to assist in ensuring that those who sustained injuries were rushed to the hospital and control the traffic in the area as most vehicles had to stop to assist the victims

    “We had to make urgent arrangement to assist in helping those who sustained injuries to a nearby hospital as most of them were either bleeding or were unconscious. One of the passangers, a woman had one of her leg cut and after rushing the woman to the hospital, we had to come back to the scene to pick the leg and take it to the hospital. We have always advised motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and over speeding.”

    31 die in auto crashes in Kano, Enugu

    About 31 persons lost their lives in two separate accidents in Kano and Enugu States at the weekend.

    In Kano, seven were confirmed dead in the crash on the Bagadawa-Mil Tara- Katsina Road.

    The accident, according to the State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr. Garba Ibrahim, also caused injuries to nine other passengers.

    The accident involved three vehicles, including an articulated vehicle with Reg. No. KTN 628 AA and two Toyota buses with Reg. No. AA 106 KKH and GNN 26 AA.

    In Enugu, at least 26 persons died yesterday in the accident at the Oji-River Junction.

    The accident, according to the spokesman for the State Police Command, Ebere Amaraizu, occurred when a lorry conveying gravel “lost control thereby killing people within the popular wonderful market.”

    The truck which was loaded with stones was descending a hill from the Enugu end of the old Enugu-Awka road when its brake failed.

    It rammed into passers-by, roadside traders, shop owners, commercial motor cycle riders and vehicles parked by the roadside.

    The injured were taken to the Oji-River General Hospital.

    Sympathizers including the Chairman of the Market Association, Ide Augustine Mba and Chairman, Oji-River Local Government Area, Mr. Onyemaechi Jideofor, joined law enforcement agents to evacuate the dead and rush the injured to the hospital.

    The police are investigating the accident.
