Neymar wants Barcelona out of Champions league

Neymar has asked UEFA to ban Barcelona from the Champions League after they failed to honour his £23million loyalty bonus, according to reports in Spain.

The Brazilian was advised by his lawyers to take the strongest possible action against his former club after they refused to pay the €26m (£23m) fee following his move to Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

And Spanish outlet AS, report that UEFA were quick to reject Neymar’s request to expel Barcelona from Europe’s elite competition.

Neymar’s £198m transfer to PSG was held up until August so the Brazilian’s father would receive the loyalty payment owed by Barcelona after July 31.

But Barcelona refused to honour the bonus in Neymar’s contract, with a club spokesman claiming he had reneged on the agreement after negotiating with other teams before the payment was due.

Meanwhile Barcelona director Raul Sanllehi, who played a pivotal role in bringing Neymar to the club, has left the Nou Camp.

Marca report that Sanllehi did so ‘on his own volition’ but was left frustrated over the manner of Neymar’s departure to PSG.

Neymar has made a strong start to life in Paris since joining for a world-record fee, scoring eight times in his first eight games in all competitions.

The 25-year-old is currently with Brazil on international duty and complained about the conditions during their goalless draw against Bolivia, which was played on a pitch almost 12,000ft above sea-level.

After the match at the Estadio Hernando Siles in La Paz, Neymar said it was ‘inhumane to play in such conditions, field, altitude, ball… everything bad’.

It’s Barca for life for Andres Iniesta!

Andres Iniesta has signed a “lifetime contract” with Barcelona, the club has announced.

Barcelona said the 33-year-old midfielder had penned a deal which will keep him at the Nou Camp for the rest of his career, although did not specify exactly how many years it would run.

A club statement read: “Andres Iniesta signed a lifetime contract with FC Barcelona on Friday, in a deal that will keep him at the club for the rest of his career.”

Barcelona are odds-on at 8/13 with Sky Bet to win the LaLiga title this season and 6/1 third-favourites in the outright Champions League prices.

Iniesta has made 639 appearances for Barcelona since making his debut 15 years ago, second only to his former team-mate Xavi in the list of the club’s all-time appearance makers.

He has been at the club since 1996, having joined their famed youth set-up at La Masia at the age of 12.

The Spain international has won eight LaLiga titles and four Champions League crowns with the Catalan giants and has captained the side since 2015.

Iniesta burst on to the international scene in 2001, helping Spain win the UEFA European Under-16 Championship. After representing his country at the 2001 FIFA U-17 World Championship held in Trinidad and Tobago, he was in the squad that claimed the UEFA European Under-19 Championship the following year. From then, he became a regular choice for youth coach Juan Santisteban. In 2003, he was part of the side that reached the FIFA World Youth Championship final in the United Arab Emirates, and was named in the FIFA all-star team. During his spell with the Spain U21 side, Iniesta was named captain on several occasions.

Iniesta was called up to represent the senior Spain squad at the 2006 FIFA World Cup on 15 May 2006, much to the surprise of many. He won his first cap for La Furia Roja when he was brought on at half-time in a friendly against Russia on 27 May. His first goal followed in a friendly against England on 7 February 2007. His long-range effort, hitting the underside of the crossbar on the way in, gave Spain the lead on 63 minutes. Iniesta played a pivotal part in Spain’s qualification for UEFA Euro 2008 by scoring goals against Sweden.

Nadal warns against mixing sports with politics

Rafael Nadal said on Tuesday that sport and politics must be separated, after Barcelona and Spanish football were dragged into the fall-out of the independence referendum in Catalonia.

The world’s No 1 tennis player is an icon in Spain, and had spoken earlier of how he was moved close to tears by Sunday’s banned referendum and ensuing police crackdown and clashes, with hundreds injured.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion was critical of the plebiscite in the lead-up, but appeared to change tack following his hard-won victory over France’s Lucas Pouille in the first round of the China Open.

“We need to start separating things,” the 31-year-old said in Beijing Tuesday, using his hands to underline the point.

“Sport and politics are not the same, in my opinion. And it is sad what’s happening, but that’s all.”

Nadal, who grew up and lives on the Balearic island of Mallorca, and is a Catalan speaker, described the situation as “very delicate”.

Barcelona on Sunday played their Spanish football league game against Las Palmas in an eerily empty Camp Nou as chaos unfolded on the streets.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said the decision to play the match behind closed doors was a protest against the violent clashes between police and activists in Catalonia, rather than a security issue.

Two of the club’s board members later resigned, having reportedly favoured Barca refusing to play altogether, even if it meant incurring a sporting sanction of forfeiting the match.

The club’s star defender Gerard Pique, a Spanish international, has been targeted by some Spanish supporters angry at his vocal pro-independence stance.

Pique in tears over violent clashes in Barcelona

Barcelona’s Gerard Pique was reduced to tears by the images of police brutality against people trying to vote in a referendum in Catalonia on Sunday.

More than 850 people were injured when riot police stopped people accessing polling stations in the referendum declared illegal by Spain’s ruling Partido Popular.

And Pique said playing in an empty Nou Camp after the club decided to play behind closed doors was the worst experience of his career.

Filling up with tears, he said: ‘There was no act of aggression from the people today and yet the police have acted in the way that they have acted today.’

Barcelona asked for the game to be called off but they were told they would forfeit the points and be given a further three point deduction and so they decided to play without supporters in protest.

‘It was very difficult to play without our supporters and after all that has happened throughout Catalonia. It was my worst experience as a player,’ Pique said.

‘Grandparents have gone with their grandchildren today and have tried to vote and the images speak for themselves.

‘All the protests have been non-violent but everyone has seen the way police reacted today and I think there will be consequences.’

Pique would not confirm he was one of the voices in the dressing room that wanted to the game to be postponed. He said: ‘There were arguments to play the game today, just as there were arguments to not play the game.

‘In the end the league and Las Palmas wanted to play the game. There were all sorts of opinions and in the end the club made the decision to play the game.’

Asked if he would have played the game had it been his decision, he added: ‘My opinion doesn’t matter very much. Lots of players expressed an opinion before the game. The club decided to play and we united behind that decision.

Liverpool insists on   £178m for Coutinho

Liverpool would only sell Philippe Coutinho for 200m euros (£178m) this summer which priced Barcelona out of a deal, according to the club’s president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Liverpool denied putting a price tag on Coutinho earlier this month, Sky sources understand, but Barcelona’s president has reiterated the Spanish club ended their pursuit due to the Reds’ asking price.

Speaking to Spanish TV, Bartomeu insisted Barcelona would not have been able to meet Financial Fair Play rules had they met Liverpool’s transfer demands.

“I will not say how much we offered, but (Liverpool) asked for 200m euros,” said Bartomeu.

“We weren’t going to give €200m or €150m – we decided to step away from such an expensive market, our offer was less than €100m, with add-ons it could have reached €120m.

“Money has come into football from outside the game and made (the transfer market) more expensive, which explains what happened with Coutinho.

“We have to make these investments in La Masia and the club’s academy, we must respect the rules. This is why I am happy with the investigation into PSG, which is a request made by European clubs.

“Neymar? Officially, we learned he was leaving when he told us… at the end of July we saw things weren’t going well, but his father told us it was nothing

“We believed his father’s word but there should have been more honesty, but we need to be self-critical.”

Barcelona spent £97m from the sale of Neymar on Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund, but he now faces four months out after sustaining a thigh injury during Saturday’s win at Getafe.

Suspected Barcelona attack plotters appear in court

Four men accused of being members of an Islamist cell behind the Aug. 19 van attack that killed 13 people in Barcelona, appeared in court on Tuesday, a day after the alleged driver was shot dead by police.

The four, the only ones still alive among the 12 men thought to constitute the group, were brought from Barcelona to Madrid where they were taken to the High Court under tight security for the hearing.

One of those, who appeared before investigating magistrate, Fernando Andreu, was Driss Oukabir, whose passport was found in the abandoned van after the Barcelona attack.

He turned himself in to police, protesting his innocence and saying his younger brother Moussa Oukabir, 17, who was killed in Cambrils, had stolen his documents.

Catalan Mossos D’Esquadra officers leave the scene where Younes Abouyaaqoub, the man suspected of driving the van that killed 13 people in Barcelona, was killed by police in Subirats, Spain, on Monday.

Also in court was Mohammed Aalla, owner of the Audi car used in the Cambrils attack.

One of his brothers, Said, was killed in Cambrils and a second, Youssef, is believed by police to have died in an explosion at a house used by the plotters at Alcanar, southwest of Barcelona, the day before the Barcelona attack.

Mohamed Houli Chemlal, arrested after being hurt in the blast at Alcanar, also appeared in court as did Salah el Karib, who ran an internet cafe in Ripoll that, according to La Vanguardia newspaper, was used to send money to Morocco.

At Tuesday’s closed-door hearing, Andreu planned to read out charges against the men expected to include counts of terrorism, murder and weapons possession.

Andreu was then to ask the accused if they wish to testify, in which case he would question them.

The hearing was likely to end in the suspects being remanded in custody while the judge conducts an investigation that could take months or even years before a trial is organised.

Police on Monday shot dead 22-year-old Younes Abouyaaqoub, who they had identified as the driver of the van that careered along the packed Las Ramblas boulevard in Barcelona on Thursday, leaving a trail of dead and 120 injured from 34 countries.

After the attack, Abouyaaqoub escaped on foot, stabbing to death a man who was parking his car and fleeing in the vehicle.

Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia said on Tuesday he walked some 40 km from Sant Just Desvern, the town on the outskirts of Barcelona where he ditched the hijacked car, to Subirats, where he was shot dead.

Abouyaaqoub, who had changed clothes, walked by night and hid during the day, the paper said citing sources involved in the investigation.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the van attack and a separate deadly assault, hours later, in the coastal resort of Cambrils, south of Barcelona.

Spanish Civil Guards escort one of four men accused of involvement in an Islamist cell behind a van attack in Barcelona on Aug. 22, in Tres Cantos, Spain.

In Cambrils, a car rammed into passers-by and its occupants got out and tried to stab people.

The five assailants were shot dead by police, while a Spanish woman died in the attack.

Most of the 12 suspects lived in the town of Ripoll, set in forested hills beneath the Pyrenees north of Barcelona near the French border, and most were young men of Moroccan descent.

A Ripoll imam, who police suspect may have radicalised the young men, Abdelbaki Es Satty, is believed to have died in the explosion in Alcanar.

Police believe the blast foiled the group’s plans for a much bigger attack using explosives.

While most footballers are now back in the depths of pre-season training, Lionel Messi is still making room for some family time.

The Barcelona star shared a picture of him poolside with wife Antonella Roccuzzo, who he married earlier this summer.

Messi kept it simple with the caption on the picture, shared to Instagram, with just a heart emoji.

While he was in fully relaxed mode for this snap, Messi is already in the goalscoring groove for the coming campaign.

He was on the score sheet in Barca’s final pre-season friendly, a 5-0 win over Brazilian side Chapecoense, on Monday evening.

Barcelona cease €26m Neymar loyalty bonus

Barcelona have confirmed they will not pay a €26million loyalty bonus to Neymar and his father after accusing the player of breaching his contract with the club.

The Brazil star completed a world-record move to Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday after his release clause of €222m was paid in full.

It was reported that Neymar’s father and agent held up the deal in order to trigger a loyalty payment that would be owed after July 31, as part of the new contract the player signed with Barca last October.

However, Barca spokesperson Josep Vives says Neymar’s talks with PSG meant he was in breach of the terms of that agreement and that the fee, reportedly totalling €26m, would not be released.

“The cheque is no longer with the notary, it’s at the club,” Vives told a news conference.

“There were three conditions: one, that the player does not negotiate with another club in the last three months before July 31.

“Two, that he will express publicly his commitment to fulfil his contract.

“Three, the collection was to be made on September 1, to ensure that he did not go to another club.

“Given these breaches, the club is not going to liquidate the cheque for his renewal.”

Barca had stated on Wednesday that the fee would initially “remain deposited with a notary until the case is resolved”.

  • Neymar signs five-year deal to complete world record PSG move

Neymar signs five-year deal to complete world record PSG move

Neymar completed his record-shattering transfer from Barcelona to Paris St Germain on Thursday, signing a five-year deal with the French club after they triggered his 222 million euros (263 million dollars) release clause.

The 25-year-old Brazil forward, who will be presented to fans on Saturday, is committed to PSG until June 2022, the club said in a statement. Media reports have said he could earn around 550,000 euros per week.

“Today, with the arrival of Neymar Jr, I am convinced that we will come even closer, with the support of our faithful fans, to realizing our greatest dreams,” said PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

Both Barcelona and Spain’s La Liga questioned whether the move complied with UEFA’s financial regulations, with the club saying they would report the deal to European football’s governing body.

The transfer doubles the previous world record fee paid when Paul Pogba moved last August from Juventus to Manchester United for a 105 million euros.

With the Spanish giants certain to be in the market for a replacement for the Brazilian forward – and with a hefty budget to invest – the Neymar move could set off a chain reaction of deals at top clubs across Europe.

Neymar said he was looking forward to delivering trophies for the French club.

“I am extremely happy to join Paris St Germain,” he said in the club’s statement.

“Since I arrived in Europe, the club has always been one of the most competitive and most ambitious.

“And the biggest challenge, what most motivated me to join my new team mates is to help the club to conquer the titles that their fans want.

“From today, I will do everything I can to help my new team mates, to open up new horizons for my club and to bring happiness to its millions of supporters around the world,” he said.

Barcelona said on Thursday that Neymar’s release clause had been paid.

Barca said in a statement on their website (www.barcelona.com) that Neymar’s legal representatives “visited in person the club’s offices and made the payment of 222 million euros…”

The five-times European champions said they would pass on details of the operation to European soccer body UEFA “so that they can determine the disciplinary responsibilities that may arise from this case.”

Barcelona did not specify why they believed there may be a disciplinary issue relating to the deal.

Javier Tebas, head of La Liga had earlier said that PSG were engaged in “financial doping” and the Spanish body would also complain to UEFA.

Tebas referred to PSG, who are owned by Qatari Sports Investments, as a “state backed club”.

UEFA, whose financial fair play rules ban clubs from spending more than their generated revenue, declined to comment but a spokesman noted that international transfers are within the remit of global governing body FIFA.

A source from Spain’s La Liga said earlier on Thursday that the league had rejected the payment of the clause to them after Neymar’s lawyers visited its headquarters in Madrid to try to settle the transfer and pay the fee.
