  • ‘Leaf batteries will outlast car’

Nissan claimed the batteries in its Leaf electric cars will last 22 years, an estimated 10-12 years longer than the average life of the car itself.

Nissan reached its conclusions based on of data from the 400,000 Leafs it has sold in Europe since 2011, managing director of Renault-Nissan Energy Services Francisco Carranza said at the Automotive News Europe Congress.

“We are going to have to recover those batteries,” Carranza said.

Nissan is considering a number of options for reuse. As one example, it already has a three megawatt storage system at Amsterdam’s Johan Cryuff Arena, which uses 148 new and used Leaf batteries.

The company also offers home solar panels and battery options, and like other carmakers such as Honda It is looking at ways to use its electric car batteries to store electricity from the grid and return it at the proper times, with revenue back going to the car owners. The company has been testing some form of vehicle-to-grid systems for years.

Last year, the company even debuted a modern streetlight powered by used Leaf batteries and solar panels.

Automotive News Europe also notes the Leaf is certified as an energy plant in Germany, Denmark, and the UK, which allows to connecting to the grid in more traditional ways. Carranza said,

“It’s working even better than we anticipated selling back to grid. The more you dig, the more you find gold. The amount of revenue and profit by using vehicles to provide services to the grid is big,” he added.

In 2018, Nissan introduced a programme to replace old Leaf battery packs. The carmaker also sold its battery cell manufacturing division last year after a long search for a buyer.

  • Russian reporters killed in CAR robbery – Ministry

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday a preliminary investigation showed that the three Russian journalists were killed in the Central African Republic on July 30 by assailants who wanted to rob them.

The three journalists, whose employer said they were investigating Russian mercenaries in the torn country, tried to resist their attackers when they were killed, spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing in Moscow on Friday.

Russian online news organization Investigation Control Centre (TsUR) said in a Facebook post the three journalists — identified as Orhan Dzhemal, Alexander Rastorguyev and Kirill Radchenko — were in the country on assignment.

Russia’s foreign ministry confirmed in a statement that three people with identification documents belonging to Dzhemal, Rastorguyev and Radchenko had been found dead and their bodies had been brought back to the capital Bangui.

TsUR said the journalists had been investigating the activities of the so-called Wagner group, an organization of private military contractors which, people with ties to the group have told Reuters, carried out clandestine combat missions on the Kremlin’s behalf in eastern Ukraine and Syria.

Local and international media have reported that Wagner operates in the country since Russia delivered light arms to the country’s security forces this year and deployed hundreds of military and civilian instructors to train them.

Reuters has been unable to verify the reports. Russian authorities deny that the Wagner group’s contractors are carrying out their orders.

Henri Depele, the mayor of the town of Sibut, around 200 km (125 miles) northeast of the capital Bangui, said the journalists were killed at around 10 p.m. (2100 GMT) on Monday.

    Their driver survived the attack.

“According to the driver’s explanations, when they were 23 km from Sibut … armed men emerged from the bush and opened fire on the vehicle. The three journalists died instantly,” he said.

TsUR’s statement said the journalists flew into Central African Republic last Friday and that its last contact with them was on Sunday evening.

The organisation is financed by Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a former Russian oil tycoon who was jailed on corruption charges and now lives outside Russia. He is one of the most vehement critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

TsUR has published a number of investigations alleging corruption by senior members of Putin’s entourage.

Central African Republic has been ravaged by violence, often fought along religious lines between predominantly Christian and Muslim militia, since a 2013 rebellion overthrew then-President Francois Bozize.

Most of the country is beyond the control of the Bangui government and a 12,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping mission has struggled to keep a lid on the violence.

Nissan unveils Leaf GT electric car image

Despite introducing a significant design with the 2018 Leaf, Nissan has shown interest in the launch of new sporty versions of its electric car.

They have now released the first image of a new Leaf GT electric car concept to be unveiled at the 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon next month.

This grand touring concept of the new Nissan LEAF is coming right after the Japanese automaker unveiled Leaf with a Nismo upgrade.

Those concepts haven’t amounted to much so far. They unveiled the Leaf Nismo RC concept in 2011 and not much came of it – though Nissan released a special-edition ‘Leaf Aero Style’ just for the Japanese market that was inspired by Nismo.

But after unveiling the new Leaf in September, Nissan design chief Alfonso Albaisa said last month that they were considering launching performance versions.

And now we get to see two new concepts: the new Leaf GT and the Leaf Nismo:

Nissan will also display 15 exciting models equipped with the latest custom and after-market parts at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2018, from January 12 to 14.
