‘Ekiti spent over N1b on car, housing loans in two years’

The Ekiti State government has disbursed over N1 billion as housing and car loans to its workers since the inception of the second tenure of Ayodele Fayose’s administration about two and a half years ago.

The Head of Service (HoS), Dr Olugbenga Faseluka, who spoke in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, said over N413.18 million was disbursed as housing loans while N696.87 million was disbursed to 2,997 workers during the period.

According to him, while housing loans were disbursed in tranches, the car loans, which range from N80,000 to N1.5 million, depending on the beneficiaries’ salary grade levels, were disbursed in full to the workers.

Faseluka said Governor Fayose recently approved the reintegration of the workers in the public service into the National Housing Fund (NHF) with effect from January, as part of efforts at ensuring that the workers have their own homes.

He said the state government had acquired 20 hectares of land opposite the Obasanjo Estate on Ikere Road in Ado-Ekiti for the take-off of the Staff Housing Scheme, which would be financed by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).

The HoS noted that an enabling circular for the remittance of workers’ salaries to the NHF had been issued, ahead of the take-off of the scheme.

Reiterating the commitment of the government to the welfare of workers, Faseluka recalled that Governor Fayose had severally assured the workers that there would neither be a pay cut nor retrenchment in the civil service, despite the prevailing recession.

He restated the governor’s pledge to pay outstanding salaries before the end of his tenure.

  • ‘Car works perfectly’

    ‘Car works perfectly’

Gboyega Alaka shares the euphoria of winning a brand new made in Nigeria Hyundai i10 with Dorcas Egede

How does it feel to be the proud winner of this Made in Nigeria Hyundai i10?

I feel really happy. It is not every day that people win brand new cars. And it is not everybody that will encounter such good fortune in their lifetime; so I feel favoured, I feel blessed. I give the glory to God.

The story is that you’re not even a regular motoring reporter.

Yes that may be true; but that’s not to say I have never reported Motoring. I’m a features writer, which means I literally cover all beats. To this extent, I have won nominations and awards in different categories, including Child-friendly reporting, Human Rights, Defence and Entertainment. I have also done strong features in Health, Crime, name it. Besides, there is the saying that a good journalist should be able to cover all beats. So, let’s just say it was destiny, and it so happened that I was at the right place at the right time.

We also learnt that VON didn’t even plan to give out the car.

Again, I say yes. The whole idea from what I perceived was to let the Senate Committee on Privatisation, led by  Senator Ben Murray Bruce and the Bureau of Private Enterprise inspect the VON facility and products and discuss the way forward in terms of developing an enabling market environment for their made in Nigeria Automobiles, which the MD, Mr. Tokunbo Aromolaran has always insisted can stand products from anywhere in terms of quality. It was in the course of the discussion and a suggestion by Senator Murray Bruce that the VON management come up with a more friendly payment pattern and a single digit interest rate for installmental payment, that he convinced the MD to give out the smallest car in the VON  products range to one of the journalists on ground. As a matter of fact, most of us were reluctant at writing our names for the raffle draw, seeing that it was rather sudden, but the senator kept urging us and at the end of the day, the VON MD himself picked my name. I believe we had over 20 names in the basket.

You’ve been driving the car for a few days now, what testimony do you have to share about the quality of the car?

I’d just say it works perfectly. True, I’ve only driven it for a few days, but I can tell you for sure that it feels the same way, as any new car brought in from anywhere in the world. And by far it is not comparable to any tokunbo car, be it top grade, like they say or low grade. And it is fuel efficient. very fuel efficient.

What’s your parting word to Nigerians

Please look inwards. Rather than buy a big jeep at millions of Naira, I’d say visit  any VON/Stallion Group office/showroom and see for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

  • Why we gave out brand new car to journalist – VON MD

Why we gave out brand new car to journalist – VON MD

MD, VON Automobile,Tokunbo Aromolaran  speaks on the gesture of giving out a brand new Made in Nigeria Hyundai i10 to a journalist recently in Lagos. The presentation which was part of the company’s ‘Buy made in Nigeria’ vehicles campaign, was witnessed by dignitaries including Senator Ben Murray Bruce, his wife, Evelyn and Chairman CMC Connect, Yomi Badejo-Okusanya.

ARE you still in doubt of the ability of Nigerians to produce top quality made in Nigeria automobiles? Look no further, as VON Automobile Limited, a division of the Stallion Group, is already leading the way with top of the range automobiles. This much the Managing Director, Mr. Tokunbo Aromolaran set out to prove recently, when the company gave out a brand new Hyundai i10 to a journalist, Gboyega Alaka of The Nation Newspapers.

According to Aromolaran, the gesture, which was a fulfillment of a raffle draw held for journalists at the VON Estate, Ojo last November 28, is to create an awareness amongst Nigerians that top quality automobiles are being locally assembled in Nigeria, and get Nigerians to patronise and have pride in the products.

The motive, he said, is to encourage patronage and expand the factories and production capacity to serve the nation better. He said, “If you’re driving locally made cars, you create an avenue for additional production, additional employment, with value added and  increase our GDP….”

Despite bearing a first name like Tokunbo, Aromolaran said he is unwavering in the fight against tokunbo (imported fairly used vehicles). As a nation, he said, Nigeria needs to go through the pain of developing its automobile industry in order to enjoy a viable industry. He noted that of the top one hundred countries in the world, Nigeria and Bangladesh are the only two that do not have viable automobile manufacturing industries, which he said is no longer acceptable.

He said bringing in cars through the borders does not do the country any good, as ‘importers’ don’t pay duties. By allowing those vehicles come in, he said Nigeria is only allowing the Republic of Benin, which does not have a vehicle assembly plant, to collect duties on what it has not earned.

He stressed that “If Nigerians start patronising locally assembled cars, our auto industry would grow and in the next three years, our second-hand auto market will also grow, which will not be tokunbo cars but cars deriving from our own market here, not cars that have been used for eight years.”

The VON Automobile premises along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Lagos, is a massive auto assembly plant with installed manufacturing capacity for 45,000 units in one shift. The company set out in 2012, with a target of manufacturing affordable vehicles for Nigerians. The overall vision is to turn Nigeria into a cornerstone of auto-manufacturing in Africa. The company boasts of the expertise and facility and a conviction that it can create a world-class automobile behemoth, which will in turn create a huge multiplier effects on the Nigerian economy and society.

Vehicles assembled there include Ashok Leyland Falcon/Hawk mass transit bus, AL Garbage Compactor, AL 1718, AL Troop Carrier and IVECO trucks. The company is also creating substantial direct and indirect employment, conditioned upon the market environment. To start with, all the safety materials it uses in buses assembled in the factory are locally sourced, to the extent that it has attained 30% local content. Some of these items include windshield, window frames, sealants, paints and labour.

VON also assembles different models of Nissan passenger vehicles such as Almera, Patrol, NP300 and Urvan bus and Hyundai models, including Hyundai i10, Grand, Civic Bus, County Bus, HD 65, HD 78 and HD 120.

Aromolaran assured on strong quality control in the OAN, which he said are like partners. He said “Nissan will not allow any vehicle leave this plant unless it has passed their test.”

He also said the Nissan Patrol produced at the VON plant can compete favourably with any brand in the world.

In terms of labour, Aromolaran said “We have recruited mechanics, trained them formally and turned them into super auto engineers and auto mechanics. They work on an automated conveyor system and know that the result of their work is important to the next stage, and dare not mess up.”

In his remarks, Senator Ben Murray Bruce reiterated his support for made in Nigeria products, promising to do whatever it takes in the National Assembly and in government to influence positive changes towards locally assembled made in Nigeria automobiles. He again advocated long-term payment pattern based on single digit interest rate, saying Nigeria “cannot move forward if all we do is for a young graduate to drive a 30-year old car from Belgium. People forget something. A modern day car can drive 40, 50 miles per gallon; that car from Belgium gives you 5 miles per gallon.”

He also called on President Buhari to, by law, compel all his ministers and government officials to drive made in Nigeria cars, as this would enhance trust in the products.

He however disagreed with the VON MD on the call to shut the borders, saying such actions would paralyse business activities in the border towns. Rather, he suggested that inefficient customs officers

  • Woman steals lover’s car after drugging him

Woman steals lover’s car after drugging him

Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives have arrested a woman who allegedly drugged her lover in a hotel and stole his Volkswagen Passat Wagon 2001 model.

The suspect was apprehended in Agbor, Delta State last Tuesday, where she was traced to with the help of a dealer she engaged to process import papers for the stolen vehicle.

She was also said to have stolen her victim’s laptop and mobile phones from the hotel in Ojodu, Berger, where they lodged on January 19.

Also arrested was a generator repairer, Adesanya Gbenga, who drove the vehicle out of the hotel for her.

According to RRS, the victim, a doctor, said he met the woman on a social media site, Badoo, last year.

The suspect was said to have told her brother, Mukoro Okpako, of her intention to sell the vehicle but was arrested before she could perfect the papers.

The police also recovered the stolen vehicle from a shop in Warri, but its number plate was removed.

It was gathered that the suspect who gave the victim a false name, drugged the malt and yoghurt she got from the bar, while he was taking his bath.

He claimed that after taking the drink around 6pm, he slept off and woke up around 2pm the following day.

He said: “I went in to take my bath and when I returned, she had gone to buy some drinks. I took the malt drink and yoghurt and I slept off. I slept at 6pm and woke up around 2pm.

“When I woke up, my personal effects such as phone and laptop had gone. Unfortunately for me, I do not know any of her relatives. We only met on a social media dating site, Badoo about a year ago. As I woke up, I rushed straight to meet with the receptionist and gateman to ask for her whereabouts, that was when I realised my car had been taken away too.

“They told me someone came to pick the car for her. And, she said she was going to get food. Immediately, I reported the incident at Omole Police Station.

“I was getting to know her for real. She told me her name was Aisha and gave me these numbers- 08067188213, 07081240038. I never knew her name is Mitchel. Since the incident, I have been trying to call her to no avail. One of the numbers was switched off, she wasn’t picking the other.”

Gbenga, according to RRS, said he had driven about three cars to Sapele for the suspect.

RRS quoted him as saying: “I was surprised to see her opening the gate of the hotel herself for me to drive out instead of the gateman. That wasn’t the first time I would be helping her take a vehicle out of Lagos to Sapele. It was about the third time. First, it was a Toyota Camry “Big for Nothing.” I helped her move it from Ajah to Sapele. The second one was an “End of Discussion” Honda Accord and thirdly, Volkswagen Passat, 2001 model. I moved that too all night to Sapele.

“I was introduced to her last year by her elder brother, who works as a clearing and forwarding agent. I was told she needed the assistance of a good driver to take her to Warri. I later met her in Ajah where I helped her to carry a Toyota Camry to Sapele.

“About four months later, she summoned me to GRA Ikeja. She gave me a Honda Accord (End of Discussion) to help her collect fuel from her brother at Wawa, Ogun State. I took the fuel and returned the car. She then told me that she has gotten another driver to take her. She gave me N5000 and I left.

“The last vehicle is the one that has created crisis for me. Although, I have been wondering where she has been getting these cars but she told me that she hired them from Delta whenever she comes to Lagos, and that a driver brought her to Lagos and returned to Delta. I didn’t know she steals cars.”

A source said she tried to conceal the victim’s phone when she was apprehended, adding that investigations were ongoing to know the whereabouts of the other stolen cars.

Police spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP), said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID).

Driver ‘steals’ ex-boss car to fund siblings Xmas expenses

A 24–year old driver Abass Ope accused of stealing his ex-boss’ car, Television (TV) sets and a pet dog, has confessed that Christmas needs of his siblings pushed him into the stealing.

Ope was arrested at Ojuelegba by the Decoy Team of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on Boxing Day.

He was picked up by the police while trying to sell off his ex-boss’s Toyota Avensis 2013 model with marked AGL 734 AR for N2 million.

Arrested along with him were three of his friends, Balogun Oluwaseun, 23, Sanni Azeez, 23 and Stephen Ewiele, 22.

Ope had during  Christmas period stormed his ex-boss Magodo home while he and his family were holidaying in Delta State, with a conspirator to move a 100 inches LCD TV, another 42 inches LCD TV, a dog, a suitcase, two DSTV decoders and a Toyota Avensis, from the home.

The suspect went to the house after learning that he ex-boss had travelled and that the gatekeeper had also gone to church.

Te suspect, it was learnt, was aware of where the man usually kept keys to his rooms.

It was revealed that his ex–boss, Ifoghale Ekinodo on getting report of missing vehicle and property called the suspect on more than two occasions to intimate him of the development but he denied knowledge of the incidence.

Ekinodo had to cut short his holiday in Delta with his family to report the incident at Magodo Police Station.

An RRS official later called him to notify him of the recovery of his vehicle.

RRS quoted Abass as saying: “I took the car because I had no money to take care of myself and younger ones. They had no clothes, no shoes and this is Yuletide season. They looked up to me to take care of these expenses.

“It was about three months now that I left Mr Ekinodo. I had worked for him for four years before leaving him in August. I left because he had a little challenge and things were pretty tough for him. I left so that he could have himself sorted out.

“He was a very nice boss to work with. He enrolled me into university but I couldn’t continue the education when I left him. While he had this challenge, he owed me eight months salary; this prompted me to take his property and the vehicle.

“The auto dealer wanted to pay N2 million for the car but I insisted on N4 Million because I know it is worth more than that. He offered me N1million instantly and that the balance would be ready in about few minutes time, but I decided to ignore the offer hoping that the dealer would call me back for a re-negotiation.

“I went back to Ojuelegba few hours later in company of three of my friends, that was when RRS operatives arrested us.”

Ekinodo said: “I am in shock. This is a guy I treated like a son. Apart from my wife, he was the closest person to me. This is a guy that did my shopping for me. Even, before I buy anything for myself, I bought for him first. How can I owe him eight– month salary when he never worked for me in those periods? Did he inform me that I owed him? He was never in my house in the periods he claimed. I called him more than twice when I got the report of the break in. He told me he knew nothing about it. If he had told me he needed money, I would have given him because we were still very close despite the fact that he was no longer working for me.”

Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP) urged members of the public to always do a background check of their domestic staff so as not to expose themselves to criminals.

She said the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Yaba, for further investigation.

  • Ford unveils new autonomous car

    Ford unveils new autonomous car

Ford has announced a new and advanced autonomous development vehicle that will be used for testing autonomous functions.

Ford didn’t give the car new name; instead, it’s sticking with the Ford Fusion Hybrid moniker that has been used since it introduced the first model three years ago.

Ford’s Chief Program Engineer Chris Brewer said: “This new car uses the current Ford autonomous vehicle platform, but ups the processing power with new computer hardware. Electrical controls are closer to production-ready, and adjustments to the sensor technology, including placement, allow the car to better see what’s around it. New LiDAR sensors have a sleeker design and more targeted field of vision, which enables the car to now use just two sensors rather than four, while still getting just as much data.”

Brewer, in his blog post, touched on some compelling and almost philosophical questions surrounding the development of new autonomous vehicles. He asked, for example, how one is supposed to replicate “everything a human driver does behind the wheel in a vehicle that drives itself?”

Brewer ponders how the car will recognise if it has the right of way or not, or what happens if there’s an accident along the route. These are questions that other firms, such as Uber, Volvo and Google, are also trying to answer. Brewer said Ford hopes to learn more by using a virtual driver system that’s dependable and able to make decisions that are otherwise left up to a human driver to make.

Brewer also explained why Ford decided to go with another hybrid vehicle instead of a standard gas-powered car. Turns out there isn’t enough electric inside of a gas-car for all of the components required in an autonomous vehicle.

He said Ford “had to tap into Fusion Hybrid’s high-voltage battery pack by adding a second, independent power converter to help create two sources of power to maintain robustness.”

  • Union cautions govt over proposed N25b car loans

Automobile, Boatyards, Transport Equipment & Allied Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (AUTOBATE) has cautioned the Federal Government over its plan to float a car purchase loan scheme to help Nigerians acquire new made-in-Nigeria cars.

The association said a well-mapped-out, clear and nationalistic guideline that would not short-change the beneficiaries at the end should be put in place.

In a release, the association’s  National President, Edeki Osumah, said  caution should be taken to ensure the so-called investors, who cut costs only on workers, detest unionisation, promote outsourcing and casualisation did not exploit the opportunity.

He said: “AUTOBATE understands the fact that the Federal Government is trying to promote a developmental policy, especially as the recession bites harder, but we feel that this should not be done at the expense of the struggling middle class, who really needs this kind of opportunity.

“We call on the Federal Government to institute public-owned automobile industries so as to widen and deepen the expected development. Industrial standards should also be maintained. This is the safest line to lead in this world of economic downturn so as to promote collective prosperity and robust developments.”

He  warned that the N25billion loan must not be left at the mercy of greedy bankers, who, according to him, take advantage of opportunities like this to divert funds to other investments, thereby frustrating the supposed beneficiaries.
