Chelsea miss Bonucci turn to  van Dijk.

Chelsea will reportedly be forced to give up their pursuit of Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci, and instead will focus on Virgil van Dijk.

Given the close relationship that he would have built up with Bonucci during their time together at Juventus and with Italy, it’s no surprise that speculation continuously linked Conte with a reunion.

Combine that with the fact that the Italian international and defensive stalwart remains one of the best in his position in Europe, he would have been the ideal addition to further solidify the Chelsea backline.

However, according to the Evening Standard, Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri has ruled out the chance of seeing the 30-year-old leave Turin this summer, and hinted at the likelihood that he will take the captain’s armband from Gianluigi Buffon when the legendary goalkeeper calls time on his playing career.

As for Chelsea, that presents them with a problem as to who they should sign instead to bolster their backline, with the report going on to suggest that Southampton ace Van Dijk will now be the subject of their focus, despite the fact that the Saints are valuing him at £70m.

Following the controversy with Liverpool and the complaint lodged against them for tapping up the Dutch international, Jurgen Klopp is no longer considered competition for Van Dijk’s signature. In turn, that should open up a window of opportunity for Conte and Chelsea, but it remains to be seen whether or not they have the summer budget to include such a signing.

The Evening Standard add that Alex Sandro and Romelu Lukaku are also on the transfer shortlist for the Premier League champions, which could be a combined £161m. Adding another £70m on top of that for Van Dijk coupled with Tiemoue Bakayoko who is expected to sign this week, and it’s starting to stack up.

Chelsea to complete £61m move for Alex Sandro

Chelsea are closing in on Alex Sandro for a club record transfer fee of £61million and are preparing to recoup around £20m by selling Nathan Ake to Bournemouth.

Ake impressed on loan at Bournemouth at the start of last season and was recalled on loan in January as cover for Marcos Alonso and Gary Cahill on the left side of Antonio Conte’s defence.

The versatile Dutch international defender performed brilliantly when he deputised for Cahill in the FA Cup semi-final but found his chances were limited at Chelsea during the latter part of the season.

At 22, he is determined to find regular football and talks have opened over a move back to Bournemouth.

Chelsea are reluctant to sell a player they believe will mature into a fine Premier League defender and will demand a buy-back option in the details of any deal.a

But Van Dijk’s proposed move to Liverpool stalled after allegations of an illegal approach by the Merseysiders and made the Saints move reluctant than ever to sell.

Liverpool and Chelsea are expected to return with further attempts to prise Van Dijk away now Southampton have finally resolved their managerial change with Mauricio Pellegrino replacing Claude Puel.

However Bournemouth have stolen ahead in the race for Ake.

Sandro, meanwhile, has told Juventus he wants to leave for Chelsea.

Juve chief executive Beppe Marotta rejected Chelsea’s initial bid of £55.2m although he told the Brazilian left-back he would not stand in his way if the price was right.

The Italian champions will make a healthy profit on the 26-year-old who cost £23m when he signed from Porto two years ago.

Sandro started out in Brazil with Atletico Paranaense before a year at Santos and an £8m move to Porto in 2011.

Chelsea are prepared to increase their offer and show backing for manager Conte who has become concerned at the lack of activity at the start of what he hoped would be a big summer of recruitment at Stamford Bridge.

The fee will smash the £50m Chelsea paid for striker Fernando Torres in 2011 and will eclipse the £47.5m British record fee for a defender paid by Manchester City to Everton for John Stones last year.

Sandro is a strong and attack-minded left-back who will compete for a place with Marcos Alonso.

  • Chelsea makes £34.7m offer for Alex Sandro

Chelsea makes £34.7m offer for Alex Sandro

Chelsea have made a £34.7million offer for Juventus defender Alex Sandro, reports claim.

Sandro had an impressive season for Juventus as they won Serie A and the Coppa Italia but were beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League final last weekend.

The 26-year-old was signed by Max Allegri in 2015 and is crucial to their wing-back system with Dani Alves on the right side.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte plays an identical system with Marcos Alonso as his left wing-back and the Spaniard was one of his best performers as the Blues won the Premier League.

According to Italian outlet La Stampa, Conte met with Sandro’s agent on Sunday to discuss the deal.

Chelsea have made a £34.7m (40m euros) bid but Juventus want £43.4m (50m euros).

Last month, captain John Terry who is leaving Chelsea, stressed the need for Conte to be backed in the transfer market.

He said: “Manchester City have already made one big signing, so we need to act fast and I am sure the club will. Everyone needs to keep raising the bar.

“We can push on. Clearly, we have to keep improving year after year. I’ve seen that you can’t stand still in the transfer market. I am sure we’ll do the same, the manager stressed that.

“This team is a great group and seeing it from a different perspective, from my point of view this year, certain people stood up to the plate, like they did after half-time against Arsenal and in other big matches when we’ve been losing.

“Not playing in the Champions League was big for us this year, but that can be the attraction of signing bigger and better players as well.”

    Church Holds Chelsea Thanksgiving Service

A church in Ghana’s capital, Accra, has held a thanksgiving service for Chelsea following its recent success in the Premier League.

Long-time Chelsea fan Pastor Azigiza encouraged people to come wearing football tops of their favourite team.

Standing behind a Chelsea cake on a stage made to look like a football pitch he said: “Chelsea, by the grace of God, came first.”

He said he wanted to use the power of football to talk about God.

Azigiza also led the congregation in a verse of the Chelsea anthem Blue is the Colour.

The pastor, who at one time was a radio DJ, was also teasing his immediate boss at the Living Streams International Church, Reverend Dr Ebenezer Markwei, who is an Arsenal fan.

In his sermon, Pastor Markwei talked about “the good, the bad and the ugly of rivalry” suggesting that football fans should engage in friendly rivalry.

He said there was fellowship in rejoicing in others’ successes, so when it is your turn others would do the same.

The one blemish in Chelsea’s domestic season was that they lost the FA Cup Final – 2-1 to Arsenal.

But during the service Azigiza thanked God for Arsenal’s victory “because it means that [Arsenal manager] Arsene Wenger will stay” and they cannot win the league with him, he said.

Fans of all teams were welcome to the service and Azigiza told the BBC that he wanted to defuse rivalry between supporters of different clubs.

Although, he added, they were reminded that Chelsea had just been crowned Premier League champions.

  • Man U to beat Chelsea to £40m Ivan Perisic deal

Man U to beat Chelsea to £40m Ivan Perisic deal

Manchester United are set to beat Chelsea to Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic

Both Premier League clubs are interested in Perisic, who is hot property after contributing 10 goals and 10 assists in 41 appearances for the Italian giants this term.

And, according to The Sun, United are set to land the Croatia international for a fee in the region of £40m.

It claimed Perisic has agreed a £100,000-a-week deal to move to Old Trafford this summer.

Jose Mourinho reportedly gave the go-ahead to complete a deal after United won the Europa League to book their place in next season’s Champions League.

Perisic, who joined Inter from Wolfsburg in 2015, is under contract with Milan until 2020.

The Serie A giants are reportedly willing to sell Perisic to sidestep Financial Fair Play issues and that could mean striking a deal before June 30.

And Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio confirmed United’s interest last night.

He said: “[United] haven’t made us an official offer for Perisic but their interest is there.

“We want to improve Inter and this is why we do not have any sellable or un-sellable players as of now.

“We know that we already have many important players within our roster like Perisic and before we decide to sell him, we have to think about what’s best for Inter.

“For me we have an as good squad or maybe even a better squad than most of the teams who finished ahead of us.

“We don’t need all that much, we will certainly make some moves but we will first have to see what our new coach will want.”

  • Chelsea axe victory parade after Manchester bomb attack

Chelsea axe victory parade after Manchester bomb attack

Chelsea have cancelled a victory parade scheduled for Sunday in London in the light of Monday’s bomb attack in Manchester.

Antonio Conte’s side won the English Premier League title last Sunday and could claim the double by winning Saturday’s English FA Cup final match at Wembley.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that thousands of fans were expected to turn out for the parade.

“In light of these tragic events, we feel it is inappropriate to go ahead with the victory parade in London on Sunday,” the club said in a statement.

“Given the heightened security threat announced by the (British) government, and recognising that this is a developing situation, we have given this careful consideration,” it said.

“We strongly believe, in the interests of everyone, this is the correct course of action. We are sure our fans will understand this decision.’’

The club said black armbands would be worn by the players in Saturday’s final against Arsenal and that a donation would be made to a fund supporting the victims.

Arsenal later also announced that they were cancelling a planned screening of the final match, to have been staged at their Emirates Stadium.

The club also said there would be no victory parade were they to beat Chelsea.

“As always, the safety of our supporters and staff is paramount and we are in close contact with security services,” chief executive Ivan Gazidis said.

“After taking their advice we have reluctantly taken the decision to cancel the screening and potential parade. We are sorry for any disappointment this causes but it is in everyone’s best interests.’’

An Islamist suicide bomber blew himself up and killed 22 people at a packed pop concert at Manchester Arena on Monday.

On Tuesday Prime Minister Theresa May’s government announced that the security threat level had been raised to “critical” as the bomber, Salman Abedi, had probably not acted alone.

  • Ola Aina stars with Chelsea in Watford seven goal thriller

Super Eagles defender Ola Aina on Monday played the last 15 minutes of Chelsea’s seven goal thriller against Watford which ended 4-3 in favour of the Premier League Champions at the Stamford Bridge.

The new invitee into the national squad was the substitute for Kenedy at the 75 minutes in the last home game match for Chelsea.

The defender who has already secured a Nigerian passport ahead of his possible debut next month brought calm to the Chelsea defence that conceded thrice before his introduction.

There are expected that coach Gernot Rohr may shortlist the England youth international for the the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers match against South Africa.

The left footed player came close to winning the game for Chelsea but his effort was saved by the Watford shot stopper before Cesc Fabregas popped up with the winning goal for Chelsea two minutes before full time.

Meanwhile, John Terry was all eyes behold in the game where he moved from hero to zero in the space of 35 seconds. Terry made his 716th Chelsea appearance and likely his penultimate one at Stamford Bridge, scoring his 67th goal.

The 36-year-old defender will leave Chelsea this summer after 22 years and will also be expected to play on Sunday when he will lift a fifth championship title and 15th major honour.

  • Chelsea EPL win: Fan names new-born child Antonio Moses

Chelsea EPL win: Fan names new-born child Antonio Moses

A die-hard Chelsea Football Club (FC) of England fan in Abakaliki, has named his newly-delivered baby-boy Antonio Moses, in the wake’s of the club’s league title win on Friday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chelsea on Friday night beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at the latter’s home-ground, Hawthorns to win the league title with two matches to spare.

The fan, Mathew Irondu, a Construction Engineer, told NAN on Saturday that he named the boy, born last Thursday after the club’s Coach Antonio Conte and Nigerian star, Victor Moses as his own way of celebrating the win.

According to him, the duo among other Chelsea players, were instrumental to the club’s stunning league success as the naming would eternally remind him of the title win.

“This win is most significant for me because it is the first by Chelsea since I switched my supporter ship to the club from Arsenal FC.

“I had endured years of EPL drought from Arsenal which made switch to Chelsea and I celebrated it this way because I don’t have money to make merriment.

“This is my first child and I fervently pray that his birth, a day before Chelsea’s league win, will bring good tidings to my family, the club and their fans across the globe,” he said.

He attributed the feat to hard work, dedication, commitment, tactical acumen of Coach Antonio Conte and impeccable support of Owner Roman Abramovich and fans across the globe.

“The club was desirous to erase the memory of the preceding season, its worst in recent times where it finished an abysmal 10th position on the league standings.

“The recruitment of Conte was the Midas Touch needed to achieve the desired turnaround as he used almost the same players who under-performed in the preceding season to achieve the feat ,” he said.

Irondu remarked that the coach displayed his managerial acumen by correcting the team’s deficiencies and subsequently made the players world-beaters.

“He stuck to the players who were involved in the club’s pre-season tours despite the accompanying criticisms and this affected established players such as Nigeria’s Mikel Obi and skipper John Terry.

“He also showed his tactical master-stroke by adopting an unusual 3-5-2 formation after the club’s humiliating losses to arch-rivals Liverpool and Arsenal.

“This tactical formation awed the entire EPL fraternity as clubs battled to grapple with the speed and agility of his wing-backs while the midfielders mesmerized teams with deft touches and passes to prolific attackers.

“The result was that the club’s demolition of other teams knew no home and away boundaries coupled with a-seven and intermittent four-points lead over its closest rival, Tottenham Hotspurs FC.

“This resulted in an ultimate triumph with two games to spare, the unearthing of hitherto unheralded talents such as Marcos Alonso, EPL player of the year, Ngolo Kante, among others, including a berth in FA cup final,” he said.

He advised the players not to be swayed by the euphoria of the win but redouble their efforts to win the season’s double with the FA cup and improved performances next season.

“Victor Moses should also replicate his all-season splendid form for the Super Eagles especially in the crucial AFCON 2019 qualifier against South Africa and World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon,” he said. (NAN)

  • Chelsea win EPL title with 1-0 win over West Brom

Chelsea win EPL title with 1-0 win over West Brom

Chelsea have won the 2016-17 Premier League title courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Friday.

Monday night’s win over Middlesbrough left Antonio Conte’s side just one win away from the sixth top-flight crown in their history, and it took until the 82nd minute for them to get the all-important goal as Michy Batshuayi became Chelsea’s unlikely hero.

Any travelling Chelsea fans expecting a procession towards the title were given a reality check inside the opening 30 seconds when Thibaut Courtois was forced into an early save, tipping Salomon Rondon’s header over the crossbar.

The visitors did soon take control of possession, but they struggled to break down a stubborn West Brom defence, with Pedro squandering his side’s best sights of goal in the opening 20 minutes.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis was fulfilling his promise to make things difficult for the title chasers, with West Brom themselves looking to take another step closer to both a top-half finish and a club-record points tally in the Premier League.

Chelsea’s only shot on target of the first half arrived after 25 minutes, and even that never truly troubled Ben Foster in the West Brom goal as he comfortably scooped up Cesar Azpilicueta’s tame effort.

Cesc Fabregas – who kept his place in the side ahead of fit-again N’Golo Kante following his man-of-the-match performance against Middlesbrough on Monday night – came as close as anyone to breaking the deadlock in the first half when he drilled a low strike narrowly wide of the far post shortly after the half-hour mark.
