Chelsea in shock home defeat to struggling Crystal Palace

Chelsea’s lead at the top of the English Premier League was cut to seven points on Saturday after they suffered a shock 1-2 home loss to Crystal Palace.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defeat and Tottenham beating hosts Burnley 2-0 meant hopes have been raised about any chance of toppling Chelsea.

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea had won their past 10 league games at Stamford Bridge and had not lost there in any competition since Sept. 16.

But all that run ended against a battling Eagles side.

The Blues struck first, when Cesc Fabregas turned home Eden Hazard’s cross after five minutes, but they were quickly behind.

Wilfried Zaha produced a fine solo finish to turn and fire home from the edge of the penalty box.

Seconds later, he set up Christian Benteke to put Palace ahead with a delicate dinked effort.

Chelsea piled on the pressure but could find no way past Eagles goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, who made 11 saves in total to ensure his side won a fourth successive game.

The international break cannot have helped Chelsea’s rhythm but that did not seem a problem when Hazard, back from a calf injury, and Fabregas combined early on.

Putting Pedro in as right wing-back in place of the absent Victor Moses did not seem to cause the leaders too many issues either, as many of their best attacks came down that flank.

A drop in energy levels might have played a part in part in places, however.

N’Golo Kante, who played 90 minutes for France against Spain in midweek, was noticeably below par.

More than 10 minutes of stoppage time was played before the game ended.

However, Chelsea did not appear any more likely to score and were reduced to hopeful balls into the box as Hazard’s influence faded.

In spite of their lack of sparkle, Chelsea’s defeat was not down to a lack of chances.

But, when they did break down Palace’s determined defence, they found Hennessey in inspired form.

His best save was an instinctive stop from Diego Costa in the first half.

But every facet of the Wales international’s game was tested as Chelsea tried to find a way back into the game after going behind.

Hennessey had to move quickly to keep out Marcos Alonso’s dangerous cross-shot, and dash from his line to prevent Costa from stretching to poke the ball home.

The goalkeeper was also tested from distance by Nemanja Matic.

He was helped by his defenders when dealing with the sheer number of crosses from the home side — 35 in total.

But he did superbly marshall a back-line which changed twice during the game because of injuries to James Tomkins and then Scott Dann.(NAN)

  • Diego Costa not ruling out Chelsea exit

Diego Costa not ruling out Chelsea exit

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has insisted that he will not “close the door” on a potential move away from Stamford Bridge after admitting that he had a row with manager Antonio Conte.

The Spain international has revealed that he did “everything” he could to seal a return to Atletico Madrid last summer, but it never materialised.

Conte, who became Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor last summer, is said to have been angry with Costa’s desire to leave, suggesting that the pair’s relationship did not get off to the best start.

In January there were rumours of another bust-up when Costa’s head was reportedly turned by lucrative offers from the Chinese Super League.

“I’ve done everything to come to Atletico but it did not happen,” Costa told Spanish radio station El Larguero. “I’ve done everything to return but I would not fight like that to return. When Atletico had to wait I did not wait.

“The relationship with Conte did not start well because on arrival I told him that I wanted to go to Atletico. He got angry with me, almost didn’t looked at me – I would have done the same. When Atletico did not wait for me I went with the tail between my legs to talk to Conte.”

During the interview, the 28-year-old joked that he has been learning how to speak Chinese, but he has hinted that he could move in the future.

“Now I’m doing very well at Chelsea but do not rule out anything in the future,” he said. “In life everything can happen, do not close the door to anyone.”

Costa has scored 18 goals in all competitions so far this season.

  • Cahill’s late goal snatches victory for Chelsea at Stoke

Cahill’s late goal snatches victory for Chelsea at Stoke

Gary Cahill made up for conceding a penalty kick by scoring a late winner as Chelsea moved closer to the English Premier League (EPL) title with victory at Stoke.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the England defender settled a heated encounter three minutes from time by sweeping home after Stoke failed to clear a Willian corner kick.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa was involved in a running battle with Stoke’s defenders — being booked himself and involved in incidents that saw Bruno Martins Indi and Phil Bardsley cautioned.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men late on when Bardsley was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Willian had given Chelsea a first-half lead with an in-swinging free-kick from the left that caught out goalkeeper Lee Grant at his near post.

Stoke defender Martins Indi then had a goal ruled out for a push by team-mate Saido Berahino on Cesar Azpilicueta.

However, the home side drew level when Cahill was ruled to have pushed Jon Walters, who blasted in the resulting penalty kick.

The visitors had nearly all the chances, with Marcos Alonso firing a free-kick against the bar and Pedro denied by a fine Grant save.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes has spoken in the past of his admiration for Costa — a striker of undoubted talent who plays on the edge.

Hughes, a fearsome centre-forward in his playing days, has suggested he sees a bit of his own playing style in Costa’s game.

The Spain international certainly did his best to rough up Stoke’s defenders, and seemed in danger of getting sent off after he was booked with barely a quarter-of-an-hour gone.

His tussles with Martins Indi were a feature of the game from the off, and referee Anthony Taylor had to speak to both players following an early off-the-ball tangle.

Costa, though, drew the Stoke defenders into the battle — and then concentrated more on his football after half-time to keep himself out of trouble.

He made sure not to retaliate when Bardsley clattered him shortly before the break, then forced Martins Indi into a challenge for which he was booked.

There was to be no goal for Costa — chasing his 50th in the Premier League — but he still came out smiling as Stoke lost their discipline.(NAN)

  • Essien joins Indonesian side Persib Bandung

Essien joins Indonesian side Persib Bandung

Former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder Michael Essien has joined Indonesia’s Persib Bandung.

The ex-Ghana international, 34, has been without a club for six months after leaving Panathinaikos of Greece in 2016 and has been training with Chelsea’s reserve team.

Essien, who turned down a move to Australia’s Melbourne Victory last September, spent eight seasons at Chelsea, winning two English Premier League titles and one UEFA Champions League.

Indonesian media reported on Tuesday that Essien has signed a one-year deal at the start of the new league season with an option to extend for one more.

Indonesia has attracted few big names international players in the past. Mario Kempes and Roger Milla, stars of the 1978 and 1990 World Cups respectively, had short spells in the country at the very end of their lengthy careers.

More recently, former England international Lee Hendrie spent around eight months in 2011 with the now-defunct Bandung FC.

    Courtois dismisses Real Madrid rumours

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has dismissed claims that he could move in the summer to Real Madrid.

Keylor Navas is having a tough time in goal at the Bernabeu currently, having been at fault for the strike that Real Betis scored at the weekend. As such, speculation is mounting that the European champions could make a change in that area, with Belgium international Courtois one of the players cited in connection with Zinedine Zidane’s men.

The 24-year-old previously played with Atletico Madrid in La Liga, but is not thinking about a move back to Spain.

Speaking to Onda Cero , he said: “No, I’m not planning on moving. I’m enjoying the success here and I am focused.”

Courtois was speaking after Antonio Conte’s men defeated Manchester United in an FA Cup quarter-final 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, booking a London derby with Tottenham in the semi-finals next month.

Burglars ransack John Terry’s £5m mansion

John Terry’s £5million Surrey mansion was burgled while he was skiing after he posted pictures of the plush interior on Instagram.

The Chelsea captain, 36, and his wife Toni, 35, were ‘very shaken’ when they got back from the French Alps earlier this week to find thousands of pounds worth of personal items missing.

Friends fear that burglars may have been encouraged to raid the mansion after seeing pictures of it on the couple’s Instagram pages.

A source told The Sun: ‘It’s a very real possibility that these burglars have seen some of their posts.

‘It’s like a catalogue for would-be thieves, and even played a part when Kim Kardashian was robbed in Paris.’

‘It’s a horrifying incident for any family to go through, and John and Toni have been very shaken by this.’

The source said that the pair have hired extra security in the wake of the burglary.

It is believed that valuable jewellery was taken, with some pieces worth five-figures.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: ‘We can confirm that a burglary took place.’

Terry bought the £4.35million former mansion of golfer Colin Montgomerie in 2014.

He snapped up the seven-bedroom property after selling his nine-bedroom mansion, situated just a few hundred yards away.

He made a £10million profit by selling his luxury home to General Sultan bin Mohammed al-Naamani, a senior minister for the Arab state – who reportedly purchased it for his boss Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

  • Chelsea go 11 points clear after beating Swansea

Chelsea stretched their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 11 points after victory over battling Swansea City at Stamford Bridge.

Cesc Fabregas marked his 300th Premier League appearance by firing the Blues ahead, poking the ball through the legs of Jack Cork and into the net.

The hosts were stunned when Swansea equalised from their first serious attempt on target on the stroke of half-time — Fernando Llorente heading in Gylfi Sigurdsson’s free-kick.

Fabregas hit the bar before Pedro’s curling effort restored the lead and Diego Costa netted the third from close range.

Swansea were denied a penalty kick when Cesar Azpilicueta handled inside the area at 1-1, but referee Neil Swarbrick felt otherwise.

The match was far from straightforward for Antonio Conte’s side and the story could have been different had Swarbrick awarded Swansea the penalty kick shortly before Pedro made it 2-1.

However, in the end Chelsea’s sweeping forward play earned them a 10th straight home Premier League win as they took another significant step towards a second title in three seasons.

On a weekend when the first major silverware of the season — the EFL Cup — is handed out at Wembley, the Blues look unstoppable.

They have 63 points from 26 games —- three more than at the same stage in 2014/2015 when last crowned champions of England.

Fabregas could have ended the game with four goals on his return to the side.

The Spain midfielder had a goal-bound shot deflected behind shortly before he opened the scoring, was denied by former Arsenal team-mate Lukasz Fabianski and also rattled the bar.

With former Blues midfielder Frank Lampard watching on, Chelsea turned on the style.

While it required an error from Fabianski to restore the lead, Eden Hazard’s exquisite timing and pass for Costa to make it 3-1 was a delight.(NAN)

Chelsea hit FA Cup quarter finals.

Premier League runaway leaders Chelsea are safely through to the FA Cup quarter-finals after Pedro and Diego Costa edged them to a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Blues toiled for long periods in their fifth round encounter at Molineux, with the hosts buoyed by previous successes against Stoke City and Liverpool.

Paul Lambert’s men came closest to opening the scoring in a tight first half, with former Chelsea man George Saville striking the post inside four minutes.

Wolves could not find a breakthrough, though, and Antonio Conte’s took the lead in the 65th minute as Pedro rose to nod home a Willian delivery.

Diego Costa then made the score line a little more comfortable in the 89th minute with a clinical finish. Below are the result of FA cup matches decided Saturday. While Victor Moses who was in action for the Blues for the entire duration of the match prepares to action in the quarterfinals compatriot and Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme who was in goal for Wolverhampton bids goodbye to the FA Cup and would have to wait till next year to try again.

    FA Cup Results:

    Burnley       0-1 Lincoln City

    Huddersfield  0-0  Man City

    Middlesbrough 3-2 Oxford Utd

    Millwall      1-0 Leicester

    Wolves        0-2   Chelsea

  • EPL leaders Chelsea held 1-1 by Burnley

EPL leaders Chelsea held 1-1 by Burnley

Chelsea missed the chance to move 12 points clear at the top of the Premier League after being held to a 1-1 draw by a resilient Burnley at Turf Moor.

The hosts had won all four of their previous homes games without conceding but fell behind early on when Rodriguez Pedro finished off a sweeping attack.

Nigeria’s Victor Moses set up Pedro who slid home the opener early on in the 7th minute.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the visitors dominated possession and it seemed only a matter of time before they added to their advantage.

However, Burnley’s record signing Robbie Brady — making his full debut following a January move from Norwich — equalised with a sublime free-kick in the 24th minute.

The Clarets almost extended their lead before the break but the Blues’ goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois superbly denied Matt Lowton from close range.

Chelsea did not have a single shot on target in the second half as Burnley took the game to the Premier League leaders.

Andre Gray tested Courtois with a low drive when he was through one-on-one.

The Blues switched to 4-4-2 in the 70th minute as Willian and Fabregas came in for Moses and Nemanja Matic respectively in a tactical substitution.

But it made little impact as Burnley held on for a well deserved point.

In the end, manager Antonio Conte will perhaps consider this a point gained as the Blues moved 10 points ahead of Tottenham and Arsenal.

    Burnley, meanwhile, remain 13th.

NAN reports that Manchester City have a chance to climb to second spot and cut Chelsea’s lead to eight points when they take on Bournemouth on Monday.(NAN)

  • Abramovich budgets £100m for summer transfer

Abramovich budgets £100m for summer transfer

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is reportedly planning to make £100m available for Antonio Conte to spend on players during the summer transfer window.

The Blues were quiet in the January market, but attention has already turned to potential recruits for next season.

According to The Mirror, Abramovich will back Conte with funds and the Italian is targeting Celtic forward Moussa Dembele, Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk and Real Madrid attacker Alvaro Morata.

It is believed that Dembele is the manager’s main target following reports that Chelsea expressed an interest in signing the £40m-rated Frenchman on transfer deadline day earlier this week.

Conte described the reports as “speculation”, indicating that the club were never interested in making a move, but it is believed that the 20-year-old is on the wish list for the summer.

Dembele would reportedly consider a move to Stamford Bridge, while Celtic are said to be open to a future transfer if the deal is right.

Chelsea are on course to end the season as Premier League champions as they currently have a nine-point lead at the top of the standings.
