Wallsall, Chelsea battle in Capital One Cup

Holders Chelsea will begin its defence of the Capital One Cup in Wednesday’s third round clash against in- form League one side Wallsall.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa will begin his three-match ban after the English Football Association found him guilty of violent conduct in Saturday’s match against Arsenal.

John Terry and Radamel Falcao will start the game, but Thibaut Courtois and Willian are unavailable due to injuries.

The only injury concern for Wallsall is English midfielder, Isaiah Osbourne, who is out because of a knee complaint.

Wallsall and Chelsea have met 11 times in history, with Chelsea recording nine victories, one draw and one defeat.

Wallsall has got off to a good start to the season and currently lies 2nd in League 1.

The team defeated both Nottingham Forest and Brighton to get to this round.

Despite Wallsall impressive start to the season, Chelsea is the odd-on favourite for this tie and many expect the reigning English champions to win the match comfortably.

The match kicks-off 7:45pm Nigerian Time.

  • Chelsea defeat Arsenal at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea returned to winning ways in the English Premier League by defeating nine-man Arsenal 2-0 in a feisty encounter at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The Blues rarely troubled the Gunners during a tame opening first half but the game was sparked into life just before the break when Gabriel saw red for allegedly kicking out at Diego Costa, Goal reports.

Kurt Zouma broke the deadlock eight minutes after the interval with a header from a Cesc Fabregas freekick and, after Santi Cazorla picked up his second booking of the afternoon, Eden Hazard’s deflected strike put an added gloss on Chelsea’s first home win of the season.

    Chelsea clear-out: Mikel faces sack

•Fabregas, Terry, Falcao, Ivanovic, two others

Nigeria international John Obi Mikel has been listed among the seven players who are simply no longer good enough and who need to be shown the door and replaced by Chelsea.

The axe was as a result of Chelsea poor showing as they went down 3-1 at Everton. Mikel made his season’s first team line up in the clash.

According to a report, emanating in England on Sunday, revealed that Mikel’s performances on that day were not impressive before he was replaced by Robert Kenedy after 55 minutes of play.

The former youth international was linked with a move out of Stamford Bridge during the transfer window but Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho believed to have stopped the move.

The 28-year-old midfielder was rated 5/10 in the match as he was considered not good enough for Chelsea any longer.

“Finally, John Obi Mikel got a rare chance yesterday (Saturday) against Everton and didn’t impress, with Chelsea surely in need of a younger and more well-rounded central midfielder to partner Nemanja Matic. (He’s) not good enough for Chelsea any longer, Mikel did not adequately protect his defence and was taken off early by Jose Mourinho,” reports say.

Apart from Mikel, other players that could be victims of a Chelsea clear out are:

    John Terry

Club captain and Chelsea legend, John Terry’s time as a star player for the Blues is sadly up after a poor start to the season. The writing has looked on the wall for the 34-year-old since Jose Mourinho subbed him off at half time against Manchester City and he surely needs replacing by a younger player at the back.

    [ad id=”403656″]

    Cesc Fabregas

Not the player he looked like at the start of last season, Cesc Fabregas needs to be offloaded and replaced by a big name like Paul Pogba, who can offer more of a goal threat.

    Radamel Falcao

Decent as a backup striker, Radamel Falcao isn’t really good enough to be playing regularly for Chelsea, as he may have to do at the moment due to the poor form and injury proneness of Diego Costa.

    Branislav Ivanovic

Horribly out of form at the start of this season, Ivanovic looks over the hill and in need of replacing with a younger, quicker and more skillful right-back.

    Willian

A player without the required skill and flair to truly change a game, Willian needs to be replaced by a top class attacker in the mould of Antoine Griezmann, or indeed recent signing Pedro.

    Loic Remy

Another backup player who is barely good enough to be a backup, Loic Remy is too injury prone and drifts out of games too much to be considered a reliable option up front.

  • Crystal Palace stun Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Reigning English champions Chelsea suffered a shock 1-2 defeat to Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Bakary Sako put Palace in front in the 61st minute, finishing off Yannick Bolasie low cross after initial block by Cesar Azpilicueta, Goal reports.

Chelsea looked to have snatched a point when second half substitute Falcao headed in a Pedro delivery in the 79th minute.

But Palace went ahead two minutes later when Joel Ward finished off a beautiful link up play between Bolasie and Sako.

Chelsea has a paltry four points from same number of matches, eight points behind Manchester City who defeated Watford 2-0 at Etihad Stadium earlier on Saturday.

  • Pedro completes Chelsea switch

    Pedro completes Chelsea switch

Chelsea has signed Spain forward Pedro from Barcelona for £21million, the BBC reports.

The 28-year-old has agreed a four-year deal and is the Blues’ second signing in less than a week after the arrival of Ghana defender Baba Rahman.

“I am very happy to be here. I am very excited to start my adventure at Chelsea and I am here to keep winning titles,” the BBC quoted the winger as saying on the club’s website.

“Thanks to the club and the supporters for giving me the opportunity to put the blue shirt on.”

Pedro, who was a target of Manchester United, is a product of the Catalan club’s academy and has scored 99 goals in 326 appearances since his debut in 2008.

He made 50 appearances for the European champions last season and has won the Champions League three times, scoring a goal in the 2011 final against United, as well as five La Liga titles.

He also won the World Cup and European Championship with Spain in 2010 and 2012 respectively.

Pedro made three appearances for Barcelona this season and came off the bench to score the winner in the club 5-4 UEFA Super Cup victory over fellow Spanish side Sevilla.

  • Nigerian youngster Ike Ugbo sinks hat-trick for Chelsea

Nigerian youngster Ike Ugbo sinks hat-trick for Chelsea

Nigerian-born England international Ike Ugbo was the star man as Chelsea kicked off the new U18 season in style with a 4-1 win at Norwich City on Saturday.

The 16-year Ugbo scored a second half hat-trick to earn Chelsea the three points at stake in the game.

Ugbo, scored his first of the day off a loose ball after Norwich goalkeeper parried Christie Davies shot towards his path to double Chelsea lead.

Christie David was involved in the second goal as he sent a through pass to Ike Ugbo who made no mistake by getting his second goal of the game.

He completed his hat-trick by pouncing on a loose ball for Chelsea’s fourth goal.

Born on 21st September, 1998 in London, the young striker joined Chelsea as an U10 player.

He scored 11 goals for the U18 team last season in 18 games.

He has played for England U17.

  • Moses, Mikel feature in Chelsea pre-season win

Moses, Mikel feature in Chelsea pre-season win

Super Eagles forward, Victor Moses, was the best player for Chelsea as the English champions defeated French kings,, PSG, in a pre-season friendly on Saturday.

Moses’ compatriot Mikel Obi played the first 45 minutes for the Londoners, africanFootball.com reports.

It was a brilliant individual performance that should guarantee the ex-England youth international’s future at Stamford Bridge after manager Jose Mourinho hinted he may be considered for first-team squad in the new season.

Moses got the equaliser for “The Blues” in the 65th minute to end the game 1-1 in regulation time, canceling Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 25th minute goal.

Chelsea then won the tie 6-5 on penalties.

The former Wigan Athletic player pounced on Cesc Fabregas pass to jab in the goal.

Moses was the best Chelsea player on the pitch, as he was dangerous in attack and supported the defence.

In the 10th minute, the Super Eagles winger dribbled past three PSG players before finding Ivanovic, who failed to score from six yards.

  • Chelsea to include Moses in deal for Everton star

Chelsea to include Moses in deal for Everton star

Chelsea is considering throwing in Nigeria winger Victor Moses as part of a deal to lure England and Everton defender, John Stones, to Stamford Bridge.

The English champion had already submitted a 20 million pounds bid for the 21-year-old England star who is seen as a long-term replacement for skipper John Terry, who has signed a year’s extension, africanFootball.com reports.

The club will now launch a fresh 26 million pounds bid with reports suggesting Everton will only do business if a bid in excess of 30 million pounds is submitted by “The Blues.”

According to Mailonline, Chelsea now believes the deal clincher will be to add Moses to the fresh 26 million pounds offer for Stones.

The ex-Wigan winger has also been linked with a move to Chelsea’s London rivals Tottenham Hotspur after the possibilities of a return to Stoke City, where he played on loan last season, appear to have diminished.

He is currently on a pre-season training tour of North America with Chelsea.

  • Why Chelsea shouldn’t sell Mikel

    Why Chelsea shouldn’t sell Mikel

This year, Chelsea are lucky to have one of their key players back in the team.

Maybe it’s a reflection of the Blues’ small-time transfer activity so far, maybe it really is a testament to his importance to the team – either way, there’s a case for praising the decision to keep John Obi Mikel as their move of the summer and I’m making it.

The news that Mikel was on the verge of ending his nine-year stint at Chelsea may not have sent shockwaves across football, but Jose Mourinho deserves applause for blocking the sale after two clubs from the United Arab Emirates showed interest.

A winner of every possible trophy with the club despite only being about a four on the scale of Chelsea legends, the Nigerian midfielder is an immensely valuable squad member and I would be staggered if he doesn’t prove too good for a money-spinning cameo.

Chelsea touched down in Montreal on Wednesday for the crucial training and public relations exercise of a pre-season tour. But as the Premier League champions begin their eighth visit to North America in 12 years, this trip stands out for a shortage of glamorous debutants.

Of course, the recent recruits may help Chelsea stay ahead of their rivals’ expanding squads, with Manchester United strengthening like there’s no tomorrow and Manchester City making a statement by signing Raheem Sterling for a record £44 million.

However, the bottom line is that Chelsea are yet to improve their first team this summer. The new contingent is likely to play more often in pre-season than the remainder of the campaign.

Which brings us back to keeping Mikel. Caution on legs, the holding midfielder doesn’t start every match either, and he has occasionally been closer to woeful than world-beating. Yet, amassing 339 appearances as one of the team’s most used substitutes, Mikel shows that you don’t need to play 90 minutes to make a difference.

Unlike Chelsea’s fresh faces, the 28-year-old adds another dimension to the side. He reads the game magnificently, bringing tough tackling and selfless discipline, not just snuffing out fires but quenching them – all in moments where matches and titles are won.

Whether providing a platform for Nemanja Matic or filling the ‘Makelele’ role on his own, Mikel has helped the Blues hold on to more leads than you can count. His experience, plus the fact he has fitted the plans of nine Chelsea managers, is drastically underrated.

It’s easy to underestimate the number of times he protected three points for table-topping teams under Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, while his midfield displays at pivotal stages of Chelsea’s 2012 Champions League triumph, especially in the final, were unforgettable.

As the squad prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona – two champions of their domestic leagues – out in the United States, you feel that Mikel is the one player Chelsea have secured this summer who could bear a kind of influence on the results.

Letting Mikel go would have been an enormous mistake. If we’re honest, Chelsea could do with more men like him.
