    Davido reacts after Cubana Chief Priest gets N10m bail grant

    Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido has wondered how he would have coped if his friend, Cubana Chief Priest suffered a jail term of six months like Bobrisky.

    He expressed disbelief that the celebrity barman could be jailed for six months for misuse of the nation’s currency.

    This followed a response to a post made by Cubana Chief Priest on Instagram.

    Cubana Chief Priest had posted on his page after paying a sum of N10 million for alleged naira abuse: “Seeing all your messages and love, I’m so humbled. Now it’s confirmed CP has no small money. Na water.”

    The Nation reported that the EFCC had arrested and arraigned the businessman in a notable Nigerian court for alleged naira abuse, but he pleaded not guilty, after which he was granted 10 million naira bail.

    Recently, online personality Bobrisky was arrested and arraigned for the same offence, where he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months in prison.

    Davido rushed to the comment page of his celebrity best friend, the Cubana Chief Priest, using Bobrisky as a case, he declared that it was impossible for him not to see the Cubana Chief Priest for six months.

    He said: “I no go see you for 6 months ke…. Never.”

    Night life business and social media celebrity Paschal Okechukwu aka Cubana Chief Priest has pleaded not guilty to the three count charge bordering on Naira abuse filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

    Cubana Chief Priest, who was dressed in a wine coloured senator buba and sokoto style, looked calm as he took his plea after the three count charge brought against him by the Commission was read to him.

    Defence Counsel, Chikaosolo Ojukwu (SAN) informed the court that he filed two applications  on behalf of his client.

    Ojukwu told Justice Kehinde Ogundare that his client filed a preliminary objection challenging the jurisdiction of the court to try him.

    Ojukwu also informed the court that he filed a bail application for the defendant and urged the court to grant his client  bail in the most liberal terms.

    Ojukwu, citing some sections of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), told the court that the defence has served the two application on the prosecution .

    He urged the court to allow him argue his application challenging the court’s jurisdiction  to hear the suit.

    The prosecuting counsel of the EFCC Bilikisu Buhari who confirmed service of the two applications however opposed his submission and urged the court to allow the defendant to take his plea first.

    Ojukwu said he had no objections to his client taking his plea when asked by the court.

    “This is premature. I am just informing the court about the pending applications. If it is just to take his plea, it’s okay but most times, the court would take objections sometimes before plea.

    “Our contention is for the preliminary objection to be taken first,” he said.

    Thereafter, the three count charge was read and Okechukwu pleaded not guilty.

    Citing section 396 of ACJA, Ojukwu argued that the offence for which his client was charged is a misdemeanor which carried 6 months imprisonment  or N50,000 fine or both.

    He urged the court to exercise discretion in favour of the defendant.

    He said  the defendant has over 1,000 employees who are dependent on his  small business.

    Citing section 163 ACJA, he urged the court to grant him bail in liberal terms saying, ” the defendant is not well. He has palpitation of the heart.”

    The defence urged the court to release the defendant to him saying he has not flouted the administrative bail given to him.

    “I would take him on my honour and perfect bail conditions in14 days,” he assured.

    Justice Ogundare granted the defendant  bail in the sum of N10million, with three sureties in like sum.

    He said one of the sureties  must be a civil servant not below grade level 16 in Federal or Lagos State Government service.

    The judge said the other two must be gainfully employed and have property within the juridition of the court and that the title documents of the properties must  be verify by the deputy registrar of the court.

    The trial Judge while handing over the defendant to his lawyer, Ojukwu ordered that the bail conditions must be fulfilled within seven days failure of which the bail will be revoked. 

    Justice Ogundare adjourned till May 2 for trial and for the hearing of pending applications bordering on jurisdiction of the court to hear the suit.

    Also in court to solidarise with Cubana Chief Priest was a social media influencer, Israel DMW.

    After the proceedings, he left the court in his black coloured Lexus Jeep marked LSD 704 HF.

    As he approached his car, the crowd  that thronged the court shouted: “Cubana! Cubana!! Igbo to the world.”

    Cubana Chief Priest stood on the step of his jeep and gave a salute to the cheering crowd and was driven out of the court premises.

    The three-count charge against  Okechukwu was filed on April 4 by Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) and seven other lawyers representing the chairman of the EFCC.

    It alleged that “Okechukwu Pascal on February 13, 2024, at Eko Hotel, within the jurisdiction of the court, while dancing during a social event, tampered with funds in the denomination of N500 (Five Hundred Naira) notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying same for two hours, and thereby committed an offence, contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007.

    “That you, Okechukwu Pascal, sometime in 2020, in Lagos during a social event, tampered with funds in the denomination of N500 (Five Hundred Naira) issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying same for two hours, and you thereby committed an offence, contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007.”

    “That you, Okechukwu Pasca,l sometime in January 2024, in Lagos during a social event, tampered with funds in the denomination of N500 (Five Hundred Naira) issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying same and you thereby committed an offence, contrary to and punishable under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act 2007.”

    Israel DMW spotted at Cubana Chief Priest’s arraignment

    Israel Afaere aka Israel DMW was spotted at the arraignment of Pascal Chibuike Okechukwu aka Cubana Chief Priest on Wednesday morning, April 17.

    Israel DMW was in the premises of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, where Cubana Chief Priest was arraigned before Justice K.O. Ogundare by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

    Cubana Chief was handed over to his lawyer, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, SAN, after which he was told to perfect his bail condition within seven days.

    Three sureties were required to perfect his bail condition, which was put at N10m.

    Ojujkwu declined comment when sought out noting that he doesn’t speak on matters already in court as the EFCC will provide further details.

    Celebrity barman, Cubana Chief Priest has broken his silence following his arrest by the EFCC, an anti-graft agency. 

    The Nation reported that the EFCC released a statement Cubana Chief will be charged to court on Wednesday for allegedly spraying and tampering with nation’s currency at a social event. 

    Sharing the specific video of him guilty, Chief Priest could be seen throwing heavy naira notes at a celebrant. 

    This particular disregard for the naira was what piqued the curiosity of the EFCC and got them to submit a case against him.

    In the wake of these charges leveled against him, Cubana Chief Priest took to his Instagram story to break the silence.

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday arraigned a businessman Pascal Okechukwu, a k a Cubana Chief Priest, before a Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged abuse of the Naira currency.

    He was arraigned on three counts of spraying and tampering with the Naira notes during a social event at Eko Hotel in Lagos.

    When the case was called on Wednesday, Mrs Bilikisu Buhari, appeared for the prosecution while Mr Chikaosolu Ojukwu , SAN,  announced appearance for the defendant .

    The defence counsel then first informed the court of a preliminary objection challenging the courts jurisdiction as well as a bail application files on behalf of the defendant.

    He informed the court that the prosecution was not opposed to same.

    After the charge was read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    In moving the bail application of the defendant, counsel urged the court to grant him bail on liberal terms

    He told the court that the defendant was admitted by the prosecution following his health condition, adding that due to his weight, the defendabt suffers palpitation

    Besides, he told the court that the offence with which the defendant is charged is a misdeamenour and that the prescribed punishment ranges from a fine of N50,000 or an imprisonment term of six months.

    He urged the court to grant bail on very liberal terms to the defendant as he is a first offender with no past criminal records .

    Counsel also informed the court that the defendant is an employer of labour with over 1000 employees on his payroll, who are dependent on their jobs.

    In response, the prosecutor said she will leave the issue of bail to the discretion of the court.

    Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Federal High Court in Lagos State has granted businessman and socialite, Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, N10m bail with two sureties in like sum.

    The Nation reported that the celebrity bar man pleaded not guilty to tampering and abusing the naira during his trial.

    Cubana Chief Priest was arraigned before Justice Kehinde Ogundare on three counts bordering on abuse of naira by allegedly spraying and tampering with the naira at a social event, contrary to the provisions of the Central Bank Act of 2007.

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will today arraign socialite and barman, Pascal Chibuike Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, at the Federal High Court in Lagos for alleged naira abuse.

    An EFCC source said the socialite is in the commission’s custody, from where will be taken before Justice Kehinde Ogundare.

    Last week, cross-dresser Idris Okunneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, was convicted and jailed for six months following EFCC’s prosecution of him for naira abuse.

    Singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, appealed to the EFCC to forgive him for spraying money on his fans.

    He urged fans in a live video seen yesterday to open bank accounts, saying he would only make transfers going forward.

    Portable said: “I didn’t deface the Naira. I help a lot of people. After God na government. Please forgive me if you have videos of me spraying money.

    “No more spraying of money. If it’s about money, open bank accounts, and let’s make transfers.”

    The abuse of naira has become a priority investigation by the agency.

    EFCC on Sunday said many celebrities were being probed for their illegal use of the nation’s currency.

    “Increasingly, members of the public are drawing the attention of the Commission to videos recording of abuse of the Naira by Nigerians from all walks of life.

    “These gestures amply demonstrate the rising consciousness of the public to the sanctity of our national currency and the need for collaborative engagement to sustain the tempo.

    “To this end, the Commission will always investigate and prosecute anyone involved in the abuse of the Naira.

    “At the moment, the Commission is investigating several celebrities involved in Naira abuse.

    “Many of them have made useful statements to the Commission and many more have been invited by investigators working on the matter.

    “The EFCC will not relent in its ‘no-sacred-cow’ mode of operations and the public should be wary of running afoul of laws against the crime,” the anti-graft agency said.
