Davido reunites with daughter after custody battle

Music icon David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has joyfully reunited with his first daughter, Imade Adeleke, amid an ongoing custody battle with ex-partner, Sophia Momodu.

Afrobeats star shared a photo with Imade on Instagram, calling it the “best day of my life”.

The reunion follows a contentious legal struggle that began in 2024, when Davido filed a lawsuit at the Lagos State High Court seeking joint custody or unrestricted access to his then nine-year-old daughter.

He accused Momodu of blocking his access to Imade, despite claiming to have met financial obligations, including covering school fees, providing vehicles for her transportation, and offering a N200 million apartment in Oniru, Victoria Island, which Momodu allegedly declined.

Momodu countered with a 102-paragraph affidavit, alleging that Davido abandoned his fatherly duties after their relationship ended in July 2022, particularly after she refused further s3xual involvement.

She claimed responsibility for Imade’s expenses, including unpaid school fees, and argued that Davido’s lifestyle and frequent travels made him unsuitable for custody, referencing the tragic 2022 death of his son, Ifeanyi, as a concern for Imade’s safety.

Sophia’s uncle, veteran journalist Dele Momodu, addressed the dispute in a detailed Facebook post, revealing that the court had referred the case to alternative dispute resolution (ADR) for a potential out-of-court settlement.

He emphasised the need for both parties to prioritise Imade’s well-being and avoid damaging public rhetoric.

Momodu also noted that Davido’s father, Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, had stepped in to settle outstanding school fees and provide a car for Imade, addressing some financial disagreements.

Most African artists are scared to show their real selves – Davido

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about the secret behind becoming the most-followed African artist on social media.

Speaking during an interview on ‘BET Talks’, the ‘With You’ crooner attributed his digital success to his open-mindedness and authenticity, noting that fans gravitate toward realness.

Unlike some of his peers who are reluctant to share personal moments online, Davido said his willingness to be himself, both on and off the stage, has helped him build a strong connection with his audience.

Reflecting on his early career, Davido said his time in the United States influenced his decision to vlog and share everyday moments of his life, making him more relatable to fans.

“I used to just post myself at home in shorts and slippers, doing regular stuff. People liked that because it felt real,” he said.

The singer, who returned to Nigeria with what he called a “laid-back” mindset, encouraged fellow artists to loosen up and “go with the flow” rather than maintaining a rigid or overly polished image.

His candidness and consistent engagement with followers, he believes, are what set him apart and keep his online presence thriving.

Davido said, “I’m the most-followed African artist across social media because I’m free with my fans. At the beginning of my career, I was very open. I used to do vlogs, showing people my life. A lot of Nigerian and African artists are always scared to show their real selves.

“I think living in America helped me a lot, too. Because my mind is kind of open a little bit. I’m not saying my people are ignorant. But let’s see them [other artists] taking pictures in shorts and slippers while chilling in their homes. Some artists won’t do that. They would want to change to something beneficial. But I still see myself as a regular person. I take pictures in shorts and slippers. And when it’s time to turn up, trust me, I turn up.

“When I moved back to Nigeria, some celebrities overthink and overdo it. I was like, no, just be chill. Just go with the flow. I feel like that’s how it should be.”

“So many songs come out every day, but only a few truly resonate.”

Shizzi joins a long list of Nigerian music aficionados and connoisseurs who are of the opinion that most of the newly released Afrobeats songs have the same sound.

Another connoisseur opined that the music genre is saturated. “Afrobeats is oversaturated right now, and everyone’s dropping, but few are connecting. Quality > virality. We need more timeless vibes, less TikTok bait,” he said.
