U.S firm eyes mechanised farming in Enugu

Enugu State Government has expressed its readiness to support American investors seeking to mechanise agriculture in the state.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Ebere Onyia, stated this when he hosted a delegation of Praxis Africa, a United States-based company and its Nigerian partners, IAEGO Agro Ventures, at the Government House, Enugu.

Onyia said the investors could not have come at a better time as the state government was doing a lot in the area of bankable projects across various sectors of the state’s economy.

“We are looking at investing massively in agriculture across the value chain and we want to do that in large clusters. And this will be in the areas we have comparative advantage. So, we are hoping that through what you are doing with IAEGO, we will be able to upscale agriculture in the state,”, Onyia said.

He added: “This is a serious government. We believe that whatever we can do to support you from the thought process to the actual execution, will be done. We believe that this will be good for the business perspective and in the interest of the good people of Enugu State.”

The traditional ruler of Nara Unateze and chairman, IAEGO Agro Ventures, Igwe Ifeanyi Ogbu, told the SSG that Praxis Africa in collaboration with their organisation, was currently exploring ways to jointly boost agriculture in the state by investing massively in mechanization and funding of farm activities across the 17 local government areas of the state.

“So, Enugu State will benefit tremendously. We are starting with Nara as the pilot area, and we will move to all 17 local government areas in Enugu State and the entire country. We already have over 25,000 hectares from which we can work.

“We are also going to talk to other communities around Nara, like Ihuokpara, Igboaka, Amagunze, and anywhere we can get land”, the monarch said.

Also, at a reception in his honour in palace of the monarch, the visiting Founder/President of Praxis Africa, Dr. Delore Zimmerman, who spoke on the areas his company will be investing in, expressed optimism that the partnership will yield tremendous results that will turn around the agricultural fortunes of Enugu State and Nigeria as a whole.

“We are working with our partners here, IAEGO Agro Ventures. We are going to be bringing more mechanisation to agriculture and more funding. Our company, Praxis Africa, started in Ghana in 2009, and we are also in Liberia. We are in Rwanda and Tanzania. We are just coming into Nigeria, and it’s all about agriculture,” he said.

Three kidnapped while performing sacrifice in Enugu River

Three young men have been kidnapped by gunmen suspected to be herders in Ajalli River in the Ezeagu local government area of Enugu state.

The men, who hail from the Akama Oghe community in the area, were said to have gone to the river to perform some sacrifice when the gunmen swooped on them.

It was gathered however that the incident which happened on Saturday, saw one of the victims escaping from captivity in the wee hours of Sunday morning, while the rest were rescued late Sunday night.

A community leader who confirmed the development to our correspondent in Enugu said it was because of the escape that the rest were rescued.

He said: “We got the information Sunday morning after the man escaped from the den of kidnappers. Thankfully, he ran into some operatives of the Forest Guard, who ensured the rest of the victims were freed that same Sunday. And they were eventually rescued close to the RCC office along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

“They had gone to Ajalli to perform the sacrifice. It is what our people do. But, what they never envisaged was that the criminals were lurking around in the forest. So, they kidnapped them and matched them into the forest from where the other person escaped. We thank God for their safety. We thank our security men. They are doing well. Without them, police cannot operate successfully in this state.”

In a viral video shared by vigilante operatives in the area, an escaped victim, who identified himself as Chiemelie, said they were leaving the river after performing their sacrifice when they were accosted and their motorbike was taken away from them by the gunmen.

He stated: “They are Fulani people. But they were mixing their Fulani with the Hausa language. They marched us across the river and further into the forest, swinging their AK-47 rifles.

“But, I had to escape when they asked us to lie down for two hours. Two of them chased me but I continued and jumped into the muddy river. I stayed there inside the river for as long as I could until the gunmen turned back. I believe it was God that saved me.”

Meanwhile, police operatives of Enugu State Command, serving in Hawk Tactical Squad, have rescued travellers who were kidnapped along Ette Road in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area, en route to Abuja.

Reports had it that between Thursday and Friday penultimate week, some commercial buses travelling to and from Abuja were abducted and taken hostage by suspected kidnappers.

The operatives also on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at about 10 a.m., swiftly responded to credible information and rescued four kidnapped victims (three males and one female) in a forest at Agbogazi-Nike in Enugu East Local Government Area, barely one hour after their kidnap.

According to the spokesman of the Enugu State police command, Daniel Ndukwe, the hoodlums, upon sighting the Operatives, opened fire on them, but the gallant and tactful Operatives returned fire, neutralizing one of the hoodlums, forcing others to escape with fatal gunshot wounds.

He noted that an AK-47 rifle loaded with nineteen (19) rounds of live ammunition was recovered from them, while further manhunt operations to fish out the fleeing suspects were ongoing.

He said, the commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, while reiterating the avowed commitment of the police to deal ruthlessly with unrepentant violent criminals and their activities in Enugu State, commended the gallant efforts of the operatives, charging them to ensure that the fleeing miscreants are fished out, dead or alive.

The CP, therefore, entreated citizens of the state to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive, and report individuals sighted with gunshot wounds to the nearest Police Station.

  • Enugu residents adopt new lifestyle models

Enugu residents adopt new lifestyle models

Some residents of Enugu metropolis have said that they have been able to survive the current harsh economic situation in the country by adopting new lifestyle models.

The residents, who spoke separately in an interview with our correspondent in Enugu, lamented that they could barely take care of basic household necessities and transportation.

According to them, the situation had led to rising cost of transport, essential commodities, and steep increase in utility bills and had left many struggling to make ends meet.

One of the residents and entrepreneur, Onyema Onyia, said he started by reducing workforce and changing his children’s schools to more pocket-friendly institutions.

“I used to have three people working for me. But because of economic hardship, I told them that I could no longer sustain paying them. So, I had to ask two to leave,” he said.

“The reason is simply because the number of people who used to patronise my business has significantly reduced. I run a food outlet. Before now, many young people, especially university students and bachelors who live around here used to stray in to get food at very cheap price.

“But, for sometime now, most of them have decided to be cooking by themselves and that significantly reduced the number of people coming to my shop. That in itself has its negative impact on my business and income. As a result, my children I had planned to give the best education, I withdrew from the boarding school where they were and sent them to a nearby school which I can afford.

“This is not what I had planned for them. But, the situation was so critical that I had to take that decision in order not to die before my time”, he said.

Another resident and civil servant, Gilbert Aja, revealed using his car to work on daily basis had become practically impossible.

He said: “I’m a civil servant and the situation is biting me hard because all my earnings finish before the end of the month without any savings. Look at the N35,000 they promised to pay us, they managed to pay for one month and stopped. How can one really cope with this situation?

“For someone who is expected to go to work every day, there is nothing I can really venture into. Doing that means that I will have to stop this one. Assuming I reside in my village, I could have started up any venture at all or go into farming. But, it’s not possible in the city. Even if it’s possible to own a shop here, the money to start any business is not there.

“So, I am hoping that the situation will change for the better from next year. But there is no sign yet that that is possible”.

Tony Adibe had to change his purchasing style, lifestyle and others just to cope with the situation.

According to him, he had to devise strategies to reduce various expenses.

In response to increase in fuel price, he cut back on driving his car to work every day and opted for public transport.

“I had a bulk buying system every month, but I decided to cut down because there is no extra income from anywhere,” he said.

“As a responsible family man, I prioritise planning and focus on fulfilling the essential needs of my family while disregarding unnecessary wants.”

Ijeoma Ogbu, who is a teacher in a private school, said she had to withdraw from school to take up a teaching job to help her husband reduce the burden at home.

“My husband is the one paying my school fees. But, his income has reduced and he is no longer getting business as he used to because most of his clients are complaining of lack of funding for their projects. I was supposed to go back to HND but I didn’t need anyone to tell me that that is not a priority for now,” she stated.

“Sadly, the situation means that we now eat twice a day. We were able to work it out. As we leave in the morning for work, we take food in small flasks and eat it around 12 noon. So, by the time, we return back, we only eat night food and go to bed. It’s not been easy but that has helped a bit.”

FG sets 11 inmates free from Enugu Correctional Centre

No fewer than 11 inmates of the Enugu Correctional Centre have been released under the federal government prison decongestion programme.

The inmates were drawn from the Enugu, Nsukka as well as Oji River and Ibite-Olo custodial centres.

The inmates were handed over to the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who was in Enugu on yesterday, for their official release to their families and society.

Recall that the Ministry of Interior flagged off the release of 4,068 inmates sentenced to various terms of imprisonment with option of fine and compensation in custodial centres nationwide.

Speaking during the ceremony at the Enugu Maximum Correctional Centre, the minister said the gesture was part of measures to decongest custodial centres and make them humane for proper reformation and rehabilitation to take place.

He disclosed that as at November, 2023, there were about 80,804 inmates in 253 custodial facilities nationwide, whose total installed capacity was less than 50,000 inmates.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo acknowledged that the alarming figures show that Nigeria’s custodial facilities are over-crowded, necessitating the initiative targeted towards addressing the overcrowding conundrum bedevilling Custodial Centres and their reformatory function.

The minister said that most of the inmates at the verge of regaining their freedom were indigents who could not afford to pay their fines and were languishing in custody.

He disclosed that philanthropic individuals, groups and corporate bodies raised the sum of Five Hundred and Eighty-five Million Naira only (N585,000,000.00) for their release as part of their corporate social responsibility.

The minister advised the released inmates to stay off crime and criminality.

He also charged their immediate families and the society not to stigmatise them.

“Hence, all inmates in Custodial Centres who have fines and/or compensation not exceeding One Million Naira only (N1,000,000.00) are qualified, and would benefit from this gesture.

“In addition, we are also providing each of them a stipend to enable them return to their communities.

“Suffice it to mention at this point that we are not just releasing them to their fate; we have given them requisite training aimed at impacting their lives functionally and equipping them with the knowledge for their self-reliance upon discharge.

“The training also covers their civic duties and responsibilities as citizens, and strategies of refraining from reoffending.

“In line with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu mantra of Renewed Hope, the benefitting inmates have been given a second opportunity to get back to track and contribute to the ongoing development of our dear nation.

“It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its custodial facilities. It is based on this premise that this administration is poised to transform custodial and non-custodial facilities to ensure compliance with international human rights standards and good correctional practices.

“To the benefitting inmates, I implore you to see this as a second chance to make things right again. You are therefore advised to stay off crime and criminality, and all join hands with our father, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, to make Nigeria a great nation.

“Abide by the instructions and training you have received while in custody and be good ambassadors in your communities.

“I hereby flag off the release of 4,068 inmates with option of fine and compensation nationwide to the glory of God,” he said.

  • Making Enugu dry water taps run again

Making Enugu dry water taps run again

For two decades or more, residents of Enugu State had harrowing experiences in terms of lack of potable water. Most residents resorted to getting water from vendors as a result of the terrible state of the public water supply. DAMIAN DURUIHEOMA reports that Governor Peter Mbah has made good his electoral promises by reactivating water schemes in the state which is now supplying residents of the metropolis with regular water

It is incontrovertible that residents of Enugu State have had more than a fair share of water crisis. For upwards of 20 years, residents of the Enugu metropolis and, indeed, the entire state were having harrowing experiences trying to get potable water or any kind of water at all from water vendors as a result of the terrible state of the public water supply.

For those who could afford it, they bought plastic water tanks while others started digging wells for water, which usually dries up immediately dry season sets in. Even at that, it is not in every place that well water was available as quite a few landlords were able to get well water, but mostly unhygienic, for their tenants.

As a result of the situation, the water instantly became a very lucrative business, which only the rich could afford. People began to invest in water tanker truck businesses which flourished.  Most large-scale users such as hotels, hospitals, schools and churches had to acquire tanker trucks to afford themselves some reliability of supply of the commodity.

Average-income families had to queue endlessly to fetch water from tanker trucks that supplied water in a very unreliable and epileptic fashion, while prices of potable water skyrocketed.

For instance, a tanker of water costs between N28,000 and N35,000 depending on location and the size of the tank. For those who bought water in jerry cans, a 30-liter jerry can of water was sold for between N200 and N250 for clean water, while coloured water from wells cost between N50 and N100.

In areas such as New Haven and Independence Layout Enugu where well water is hardly available, some of the residents, particularly Umuezebi, New Haven in Enugu Town fetch water from Ugbo-Ogrugru stream close to a dumpsite and unclean even to the ordinary eye, while those of Independence Layout fetch from Mmili Ani Stream situated at the back of Chinatown Building, Independence Layout area of Enugu State, also very close to a dump site. Because they could not afford to buy distributed water from the suppliers, this became their only option.

Findings showed that they used the water to cook, bathe and wash clothes, while households who did not have options drank the water after boiling it.

According to WaterAid Nigeria, over half of the state’s residents lack basic water services. Its research shows that lack of access to water contributes to poverty and poor health, with almost one in 10 children under age five being stunted. This is exacerbated by the topography of the state, which is covered by coal and makes access to groundwater difficult with no permanent solution to it.

Year after year, the water crisis became persistent in Enugu. To many, the Enugu public water supply from Enugu State Water Corporation was jinxed. In the past 20 years, every effort made by residents, business owners and the media to have the public water supply brought back to its good old days invariably met a brick wall.

       A promise kept

These days, however, residents of the state capital are singing a new song. On Saturday, November 25, 2023, the day Governor Peter Mbah clocked 180 days in office, the newly reconstructed ultramodern water scheme was inaugurated, bringing relief to millions of residents in the metropolis.

The water challenge had been a major campaign issue for candidates during the 2023 electioneering campaigns. To demonstrate how serious he was, before his assumption of office on May 29, 2023, Governor Peter Mbah had vowed to make public water supply run in every household within the Enugu metropolis. And exactly 180 days in office, the governor forced the era of water scarcity to become history as the public taps started running again with the results showing in homes and other public water galleries within the capital city.

Looking back to the campaign days before the elections, where it all started, Governor Mbah said it became evident to him that the challenge of water supply was fundamental to the achievement of his objective to take the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from its current position of $4.4 billion to $30 billion within the next four to eight years.

“It was clear to us that the status of water supply at the time was deplorable,” he said.

Continuing, Mbah said: “One doesn’t need to be a rocket scientist to discern that a few investors will be attracted to the state under such dire circumstances, neither can existing businesses expand to generate additional jobs and economic growth. If anything, these conditions are suffocating businesses and households and leading to unnecessary suffering across the state.

“Faced with this fundamental issue, and considering the suffering of Ndi Enugu, it was only natural that we identified the provision of water as one of our first targets in the drive to execute our mandate and social contract with citizens of Enugu State.

“We also chose to give ourselves a target of resolving this challenge in 180 days; not for the purpose of chest-thumping but rather because firstly, the issue is urgent. We did not want Ndi Enugu to suffer unduly for even one minute longer than avoidable, and secondly, we saw this as an opportunity to galvanise Ndi Enugu for the tough tasks ahead and whip our administration into gear as quickly as possible.

“When we communicated this promise, it triggered disbelief in most quarters and that is, perhaps, understandable. After all, Ndi Enugu have seen before now countless successive but unsuccessful attempts to address this problem.”

The governor expressed happiness that 180 days after he made the promise of getting water to every household; he had inaugurated the new ultramodern water scheme with a capacity to deliver 70 million litres of potable water daily to businesses and families in Enugu.

While noting that this was but the first phase, Mbah said that “in a few weeks, we will also be inaugurating new pumps in Oji Water Scheme to enable us to deliver another 50 million litres of water every day.

“This will give us a total daily delivery of 120 million litres in Enugu, about twice the daily demand of Enugu urban.

“We are currently supplying water at appreciable pressures to Enugu municipality and I can state here and now that pipe-borne water is here to stay.

However, it is certainly not yet time to shout Uhuru. That is because the existing water pipe network does not service a number of major residential areas which developed since the last major pipe-laying projects in Enugu. We will need to continue the effort to extend pipe-borne water to them.

“In addition, the towns outside Enugu also have varied degrees of water problems. Now that we can see the end of the water issues around Enugu urban, we must not refocus on addressing towns such as Nsukka, Oji, Udi and other areas.

“Finally, but certainly not least importantly, we still have our rural areas, where clean water availability is still not assured. We must now begin to examine and deploy creative location-specific water supply solutions across all the local government areas. This will enable us to achieve the minimum levels of water sufficiency, sanitation and hygiene which will position us to meet the sustainable.”

    Residents react

Expectedly, some residents of Enugu metropolis reacted to the news of public water supply returning back to the capital city, praising Governor Mbah for ending the perennial water scarcity within the state capital just in 180 days in office as promised during the campaigns.

The residents, who described Governor Mbah as the type of leader they look up to emulate in the future, regretted that the Enugu people had suffered acute water shortages that impugned their humanity for over 20 years.

One of the residents and former Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo described the administration’s massive investment in water resources through Internally Generated Revenue and 120 million litres daily volume of water recorded in 180 days, as a miracle.

According to him, Mbah had redefined governance and rebuilt public confidence in the government.

“In the past, we used to hear that the government earmarked a lot of things, but nobody gets to see them. But we are now “eye-marking” a solemn promise that was made and kept,” Nebo stated.

Speaking during one of the governor’s stopovers to inspect some reconnected institutions and inaugurated some of the 96 water galleries constructed around the city, the Senior Prefect of Godfrey Okoye University Secondary School, Master Radiance Kamah expressed the joy and appreciation of the students to the governor.

Kamah said: “Not long ago, you came into this state, you started improving Enugu and I am very sure that by next year, we will be ranking among the first best states in Nigeria. I can remember the 11th convocation held at Nike, we could see different stuff this beautiful construction going on. But it wasn’t completed then. To the glory of God, with you and your inspections, this has been built. With not much time, you have completed it and you are inaugurating it today.

“And I know this will send to the students and the youth of Nigeria, how a good leader should be and how they should begin to form themselves so that at the end when it will be our turn, we would have that sense of how to govern a country and a state. I pray that maybe when you will reach the top of the Presidency, you will change Nigeria for good.

“Ndi Enugu, you are lucky to have a governor such as this and I know other states will be jealous.”

For the Director of Communications and Public Enlightenment of the Centre for Humanity, Peter Ugwu, the group is pleased to identify with the governor for fulfilling his promise in record time.

According to him, the abundance of water achieved by the Mbah administration in 180 days could have taken any other serious government at least four years to record.

Ugwu said: “According to the World Bank, about 70 million Nigerians do not have access to safe drinking water, while approximately 114 million do not have access to basic sanitation facilities. This has affected people’s health, well-being and economic productivity.

“This is why The Centre for Humanity is pleased to identify with the grand success registered by Governor Peter Mbah in the provision of potable water in Enugu City in 180 days, especially the inauguration of the 9th Mile 24/7 Water Scheme, backed by a 4.4MW backup gas-powered electricity generation plant to guarantee non-stop water supply to Enugu metropolis going forward.

“Raising water production capacity from an occasional two million litres to 120 million litres daily is a great mileage, and we trust that the governor will, as promised, now concentrate on fixing the bursting pipes and willful vandalisation and sabotage, which result in loss of huge quantities of water,” the Centre stated.

Ugwu also urged Enugu residents to own the facilities and protect them against vandals and those out to sabotage efforts to have the people enjoy public water after over two decades.
