    BREAKING: Gunmen bomb station, kill three policemen in Anambra

    Gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have bombed one of the police stations, killing three policemen in the process in Anambra State.

    The Nation reports that the incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Monday, September 16, in the Orumba South Local Government Area.

    Following the attack, Joint Security Forces—including the Military, Police, Navy, Civil Defence, and Vigilance groups—recovered five unexploded bombs at the scene. 

    Reports indicated that the assailants were attempting to enforce the Monday sit-at-home order when they clashed with security personnel.

    While eyewitnesses reported three fatalities and additional injuries, Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed that two policemen were killed in the attack.

    He said: “The Joint Security Forces comprising of the Police, Army, Navy, Civil defence and other Security Agencies recovered five unexploded improvised explosives and are on the trail of arsonist and armed successionist group members, who in the early hours of today 16/9/2024 attacked the Umunze Police Station.

    “The suspected Armed Proscribed Group invaded the Police Facility with improvised explosives, shooting sporadically and fire caught part of the Station. 

    “Unfortunately, two of the Police Operatives on duty during the gun battle in a bid to resist the assailants from causing more havoc paid the supreme price. Their bodies have been recovered and taken to the morgue”. 

    Meanwhile, he said the Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam visited the scene, on a spot assessment to reinforce and reassess security deployment.

    JUST IN: Gunmen reportedly kill seven in Benue community

    Gunmen on Tuesday morning killed seven persons in Naka town, headquarters of Gwer West Local Government Area in Benue State. 

    Naka town is located on Makurdi- Naka- Adoka – Ankpa trunk A federal highway.

    The inhabitants are predominantly peasant farmers who have been suffering herdsmen attacks for over 16 years.

    An eyewitness, Terna Ukaa, told The Nation the gunmen stormed Naka town on bicycles towards Adoka road around 4 am and opened fire on sleeping residents.

    Ukaa said they did not pick any item, suggesting the gunmen came to kill.

    He said before the Tuesday killing ,armed herdsmen have  destroyed their farm land using cattle who graze on crops like cassava,rice and millet .

    Police spokesman Kate Aneene, a SP, said she was yet to confirm the incident but promised to call back.

    Gunmen shoot man dead

    A 20-year-old man has been murdered in Okokomaiko, Ojo, Lagos, by four unidentified gunmen.

    The incident occurred around 9:10 p.m. last Friday on Abeokuta Street, where the victim was chased down and shot multiple times.

    According to the police, the assailants fired several shots at the young man, targeting his head, stomach, and leg.

    The victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The attackers fled immediately.

    The police anti-crime team responded to the distress call and arrived at the scene shortly after.

    Upon arrival, they met a woman identified as Vivian, who confirmed that the deceased was her 20-year-old son.

    His identity is being withheld for security reasons. The victim lived with his mother at the same address on Abeokuta Street.

    Photographs of the deceased were taken, and the body was subsequently evacuated and deposited at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) mortuary in Yaba, Lagos.

    The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident.

    Efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend the fleeing suspects for prosecution. The case has been transferred to the appropriate authorities for further and discreet investigation.

    Gunmen kill two in Rivers community

    Gunmen have killed two natives of Briun community in Bou-Ko kingdom in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State

    The incident incident reportedly occurred around 8pm when many residents of the area were already indoors.

    Some of the residents, who heard the sound of the gunshot, were said to have panicked and fled the community.

    A resident of the area and Chairman, Board of Trustees, Ken Saro-Wiwa Surveillance Group, Bright Nwiyorde, called for a thorough investigation into the incident. 

    Nwiyode called for more security presence in the area and urged the state government and relevant security agencies to come to the aid of the community and help fish out the killers.

    He said: “In Bou-ko kingdom we heard that unknown gunmen shot two people in Briun community at night.

    “We don’t know the people and that is why we are calling on the Government, the Commissioner of Police, the Khana local government chairman and the security at the local government level to come and investigate the matter and bring them to book.

    “At the same time, myself as a security person I’m also doing my own investigation to help the government get to the root of the matter.”

    When contacted, Rivers police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said she was yet to receive a report of the incident.

    Gunmen assassinate lawyer in Aba

    A lawyer Lucky Nonso Emeh has been shot dead by gunmen at his residence at No. 28 Umuatako Road, Aba.

    Emeh of the Ministry of Justice in Umuahia was said to have been seen in Umuahia, the state capital on Monday before he left for Aba.

    Some members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Aba Branch confirmed the death.

    They said though they wouldn’t want to preempt police investigation, there were indications that it was a case of assassination.

    A colleague, Emperor Ogbonna, said: “I am mourning. The entire Bar and Bench in Abia state are mourning.

    “My man, Lucky Chinonso Emeh, was shot near his home at Umuatako two days ago.

    “The last time I was with him was at the Museum in Aba about a month ago when we were laughing and talking law.

    “Never knew that was the last time I was going to see this good man. A very respectful lawyer.

    “He was never controversial like us. I wonder why anyone would want to snuff out the life of this good man.

    Rest in peace my man.”

    Another colleague of the deceased said:  “This is sad news. My man is gone, someone that just lost his father not quite a long time ago. May God grant your soul everlasting rest.

    “I was at the hospital on a visit to my sick Aunty when he was brought in. The shock I had that night was inexplicable.

    Gunmen kill police officer, two others, burn down stations in Imo

    Gunmen have reportedly killed three security personnel in Imo State

    Three police personnel were killed on Tuesday evening and Wednesday at two separate operations in two different locations. They also set a police station and council headquarters ablaze.

     At Obowo Council area, the gunmen  slaughtered a police officer in his house at Umulogho NEPA junction in Obowo Council area. 

    The Nation gathered the gunmen invaded the area around 8 pm on Tuesday and shot sporadically, entered into the house of the late officer after identifying him from the student nurses residing in the same compound.

    It was gathered the hoodlums spent 45 minutes  unchallenged despite the presence of three police formation and a military checkpoint in the area.

    Some witnesses told our correspondent that the gunmen took 45 minutes to separate those who are students before eventually identifying the officer who they slaughtered with a knife.

    It was learnt that after killing the police officer and left around 8.45pm,  they returned early morning on Wednesday to set the police station ablaze.

    One of the sources who pleaded not to be mentioned because of the security risk, described the killing as “horrifying.”

    “I want the Imo State Government and  state police command to come out clean on security situation in the state, especially in the rural areas.

    “We have three police formations and a military presence at Obowo where the incident took place. Yet no single operational vehicle there. The only one hilux van all of them are using is solely  used by the area command to the extend that police officers there use Keke to go on road block.

    He continued: “This police officer was slaughtered right in his house at NEPA Bus Stop Junction where he is living. When the gunmen stormed the place, they took 45 minutes to identified those who are student nurses, before identifying the officer and eventually slaughtered him.

    “They left after killing the officer and returned this morning to burn down the Obowo police Division,” he said.

    At Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, they killed two security officers on duty and setting some sections of the council building and vehicles on fire.

    A witness said the attack might be due to the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election held in the 27 LGAs and 306 wards of the State.

    He said: “Two security personnel at Isiala-Mbano council headquarters have been shot dead. The hoodlums also set ablaze a larger portion of the council building and several vehicles parked on the premises,” the source said.

    APC is having their primaries today for the September 21 local government council election. The assailants may have thought the exercise was held at the council headquarters.

    “They stormed there around 8:30pm and shot the security men on sight to death. Many others escaped with various degrees of injuries.

    “There is palpable fear in Umuelemai, the LGA headquarters, because people, as I speak, have run away to neighbouring villages for fear of being killed. Government and police should come to our rescue.”

    Imo Police spokesman Henry Okoye is yet to comment on the incident.

    Gunmen kill popular Aba-based lawyer

    Barrister Lucky Nonso Emeh, a staff of the Ministry of Justice in Umuahia, has been killed by yet-to-be identified gunmen at his residence in Aba, Abia State last night.

    Eme was said to have been killed in front of his residence at No. 28 Umuatako road, off Aba-Owerri Road, Aba.

    The news of lawyer’s untimely death has sent fear among the members of Bench and Bar community in not just Aba but the State at large.

    Emeh, who reportedly buried his father not too long ago, was said to have been seen in Umuahia, the state capital on Monday before he left for Aba.

    A colleague was said to have driven him to the popular Umuahia motor park where he was said to have boarded a commercial bus to Aba.

    It wasn’t clear at what point that the gunmen started trailing him or the incident that led to his untimely death.

    It was however gathered that it was a case of assassination.

    Sources said that before his brother could arrived the scene, he had died in the pool of his blood.

    Some members of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Aba Branch confirmed the death of Eme.

    They said that though they wouldn’t want to preempt police investigation there were indications that it was a case of assassination.

    The leadership of the NBA, is yet to react to the incident officially as efforts were on to visit the family in order to obtain firsthand information from them.

    A colleague, Barr. Emperor Ogbonna, speaking on the killing of his colleague said: “I am mourning.

    The entire Bar and Bench in Abia state are mourning.

    “My man, Barrister Lucky Chinonso Emeh was shot near his home at Umuatako two days ago.

    “The last time I was with him was at the Museum in Aba about a month ago when we were laughing and talking law.

    “Never knew that was the last time I was going to see this good man.

    A very respectful lawyer.

    “He was never controversial like us.

    I wonder why anyone would want to snuff out the life of this good man.

    Rest in peace my man.”

    Another colleague of the deceased said: “This is a sad news,my man is gone someone that just lost his father not quite long time ago.May God grant your soul everlasting rest.

    “I was at the hospital on a visit to my sick aunty when he was brought in. The shock I had that night was inexplicable. 

    “My Jolly good fellow whom I attend same church with, just gunned down like that? Seeing him struggling with life in a pool of his own blood?”

    Gunmen have attacked another police station with bombs in Anambra State with three operatives feared killed.

    The incident happened at Oba, idemili South local government are on Tuesday morning with many policemen seriously injured

    But the police authorities claimed that only a Corporal was killed by the hoodlums.

    The secessionist group terrorising the entire Southeast region also attacked the Oba Civic Centre.

    Last week, one of the leaders, sent a voice note on social media calling for a one month sit-at- home in the region

    Anambra police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday in Awka

    Ikenga said: “Following, an attack in the early hours of today 3/9/2024 on Oba Police Divisional Headquarters and Oba Civic Cent<re. 

    “The suspected armed successionist group started shooting sporadically in an attempt to gain entrance to the Police Station and threw petrol bombs at the security facility which made some of the offices catch up with fire including the Oba Civic Center. 

    “Unfortunately, a police corporal who was fatally wounded paid the supreme price, while the fire was put off with the help of other Police officers on duty and the Joint Security responding team. 

    “The Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, while condemning the act, described the invasion of Security facilities and hostility towards security agents as an attack on the soul of a Nation and vows to bring those behind the unholy act to book.” 

    However, one of the Senior Police Officers in the state, told The Nation that three of their men died during the attack. 

    The source regretted that such attacks on Police formations had started again in Anambra state, while describing the assailants as members of the secessionist group.

    • As residents, police disagree on number of deaths

    The people of Ogbaru local government area of Anambra state have disagreed over the number of casualties recorded during the attack on the Council headquarters Friday.

    While some of the residents told The Nation that five persons were killed by the gunmen, the state police spokesman, Ikenga Tochukwu said no life was lost.

    The hoodlums, invaded the Council headquarters in Atani, early Friday morning where they had a field day without challenge, destroyed some of the vehicles and buildings at the headquarters

    The Nation gathered that the gunmen numbering over 30, arrived at the Council secretariat and opened fire, destroying buildings within the headquarters of the council area.

    In the process of the random shooting that scared the residents, about five persons were killed, while some others were injured

    But the State police public relations officer, Ikenga, said: “The attack was on Ogbaru LGA in the early hours of today 30/8/2024.

    “Security operatives gallantly resisted the gunmen, but some LGA properties were destroyed, some buildings were also affected, but no life was lost.”

    He said a joint security operation was ongoing in the area presently.

    It was not the first time Ogbaru Local Government headquarters would be attacked by gunmen.

    During the last attack, some buildings and cars within the premises of the secretariat were burnt.

    Reacting Friday, the member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Hon. Afam Ogene, condemned the violent attack on innocent citizens.

    While urging the governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo to prioritize the security of the people

    He described the incident as “utterly horrendous, mindless, and worrisome.”

    The Nation, further gathered that they had accessed the vicinity from the Umuzu and Amiyi axis, of the local government

    In a statement in Awka, Ogene, expressed deep concern and condemnation over the senseless violence in Ogbaru Local Government Area.

    He urged the Anambra State government and security agencies to take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of the people.

    Ogene lamented that the recurring violent killings and destruction of property in the LGA had become a persistent nightmare

    He said the situation had instilled morbid fears and trepidation among the residents, while emphasising on the need for swift and decisive action to address the situation and restore peace to the affected communities.

    “The persistent violence and criminality in Ogbaru Local Government Area are alarming, despite repeated calls for government action.

    “It is worrisome that despite numerous appeals to the government to address insecurity in Ogbaru, we continue to witness avoidable incidents of violence and criminality.”

    “In fact, I am aware that earlier this year, the traditional rulers of Ogbaru had, in a memo to Governor Soludo, lamented the siege on their people and suggested the citing of security outposts around the junctions leading into Amiyi and Ogwuaniocha communities.”

    Gunmen kill Lekki traditional ruler’s son

    Gunmen have reportedly murdered Demola Akinloye, the first son of Oba Tijani Akinloye, the traditional ruler of Ajiran land, Lekki, Lagos State

    The brutal killing occurred on Sunday around 12:30 pm near Bourdillion Court Estate along Chevron Drive.

    According to the Lagos Police Command, the 50-year-old Akinloye was driving a Toyota Corolla when he was attacked by suspected gunmen in a minibus.

     Eyewitness accounts suggested the assailants shot and stabbed Akinloye to death before fleeing the scene.

    Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, stating that a distress call was received at the station, prompting an immediate response. 

    He said officers visited the crime scene where they recovered an expended cartridge while Akinloye’s body has been transferred to a morgue in Ajah, pending an autopsy.

    The case has since been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti-Yaba for further investigation.

    The incident sent shockwaves through the Ajiran community, leading to widespread fear and panic.

     The area around the crime scene, particularly near Chevron Drive, has been deserted as residents, gripped by fear, fled. 

    Notices from local estate management have urged residents to avoid the Chevron, Agungi, and Ajiran areas for safety.
