    Gunmen abduct 11 students, others in Enugu

    Gunmen have abducted 11 passengers at the Amechi-Idodo axis of the Enugu-Abakaliki federal highway in Enugu State.

    Among the victims are students from tertiary institutions in Ebonyi State, who were on a commercial bus from Awka, Anambra State to Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

    The abduction occurred on Tuesday when the assailants intercepted the bus at the Amechi-Idodo area in Nkanu East Local Government Area.

    This location has become a hotspot for kidnappings.

    A relative to one of the victims said the kidnappers had contacted the family and demanded a ransom of N30 million.

    JUST IN: Gunmen abduct eleven students, passengers in Enugu

    Eleven passengers have been abducted by suspected gunmen at the Amechi-Idodo axis of the Enugu-Abakaliki federal highway in Enugu state.

    The victims included students from tertiary institutions in Ebonyi State who were travelling in a commercial bus from Awka, Anambra State, to Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State.

    The abduction took place on Tuesday when the assailants intercepted the bus at the Amechi-Idodo area in Nkanu East Local Government Area.

    The location has recently become a hotspot for kidnappings.

    A relative of one of the victims revealed that the kidnappers had contacted the family and demanded a ransom of N30 million.

    The Enugu State Police command is yet to react to the development as of the time of filing this report.

    Gunmen kill one, kidnap four in Anambra

    No fewer than four unidentified persons have been kidnapped by gunmen, while one was killed in Anambra State.

    The incidents happened on Saturday night in various locations.

    At Ifite Awka, two persons were kidnapped after the gunmen fired shots close to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) school gate.

    Another incident took place at Peter Obi’ Agulu-Oraukwu Road, where one person was equally kidnapped in the evening.

    But at night in Oye Market in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area, where one man was whisked away by the gunmen.

    Also, one of the persons from Enuavomimi village in Enugwu-Ukwu in the same Njikoka, identified as Clement Eduzor, was killed by the gunmen.

    Gunmen who attacked Ebonyi police station killed

    The Police and other security agencies on Wednesday night reportedly killed about five gunmen who allegedly attacked a police station in the state.

    Sources in the area said the gunmen attacked the Ishieke Police Station in Ishieke, a suburb of Abakaliki, capital of the State.

    On arrival, the gunmen reportedly engaged police men on duty in a shootout which lasted for some hours.

    The incident, according to sources, started around 9 pm, with heavy shooting, scaring residents into hiding.

    One of them, Tony Nwori, said the gunmen arrived the police station and started shooting sporadically on the air.

    He said the gunmen engaged in a gun battle with the policemen in front of the station for over 30 minutes, before reinforcement from other security agencies arrived.

    The situation later drew the attention of more security operatives including soldiers who came in their numbers to apprehend the hoodlums.

    The gunmen made to retreat while shooting sporadically on the air through Odomoke Ishieke market along Nwiboko Obodo road.

    But the security agents gave them a hot chase and neutralised them.

    Police spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu could not be reached for comment as of the time of filing this report.

    Gunmen kill PoS operator in Ekiti

    A popular Point of Sale (PoS) operator has been shot dead by unknown gunmen around Adebayo area, Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

    The deceased, simply identified as Alfa, was killed by the assailants yesterday in his shop located after the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).

    The incident happened four days after two gunmen killed okada riders’ ticketing officer around Okesa Area of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

    Eyewitnesses said the assailants numbering about three stormed the area on a motorcycle and opened fire on the victim and escaped from the scene with an undisclosed amount.

    A source said: “The people came on okada and shot at him from close range, killing him on the spot. He was a popular PoS agent in this area, because he always had cash.

    “They even took his money and phones away because he was just settling down for the day’s operations as a PoS agent. You know, they deal mostly with cash.’

    “The government must be alive to its responsibilities because these killings happening in the state capital in daylight are troubling. We have had killings in Ado-Ekiti in the last few weeks,” the source added.

    The incident happened four days after two gunmen killed Okada riders’ ticketing officer around Okesa Area of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. 

    Eyewitnesses said that the assailants numbering about three stormed the area on a motorcycle and opened fire on the victim and escaped from the scene with undisclosed amount of money.

    Gunmen kill motorcyclists’ ticket officer in Ekiti

    Gunmen on Tuesday killed an officer of the Okada Riders Association, Ekiti State, Samuel Omoyajowo in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital. 

    It was learnt that the victim was shot in broad daylight by two gunmen riding on a commercial  motorcycle around the popular Okesa Roundabout in Ado Ekiti.

    Omoyajowo was said to have been shot moments after he asked to know if  the gunmen had obtained a  ticket for the day.

    Witnesses, who knew the victim before his death, said that he was one of  the officers engaged to issue daily tickets to commercial motorcyclists around Okesa Roundabout.

    The witnesses said that the assailants immediately sped away after shooting at the victim. 

    The incident led people around the area to scamper for safety, as many hurriedly closed shops and offices for the fear of reprisals attack by member of the Okada union.

    It was gathered that the corpse of the victim had been deposited at the morgue of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital. 

    The Ekiti State Police Command Public Relations Officer DSP Sunday Abutu who confirmed the development, said that the investigation had begun to unravel the situation.

    Anambra Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Itam has described the gunmen who killed leader of a Vigilance group Monday in Nnewi as cowards.

    He ordered immediate manhunt operation on the armed men Operating in a red Highlander jeep.

    During the operation of the hoodlums,  one person was abducted while three others hit by the bullets later died in one of the hospitals in Nnewi.

    In a statement Tuesday by the Command  by the Police spokesman, Ikenga Tochukwu, the security operatives trailed the assailants to Nnobi, Idemili North local government area, where they engaged them in a shootout

    According to Ikenga: “During the gun duel, one of the security Operatives was fatally hit by the bullet and due to the indiscriminate shootings by the hoodlums in an attempt to escape the scene, the bullet also fatally struck two innocent passersby in the area. 

    “The Police Responding Team at the scene recovered the bodies of the victims and took them to the hospital but regrettably, three of the victims including a 22-year-old lady were confirmed dead by the doctors on duty while two others are currently receiving treatment.

    “The Commissioner condemned the killing in the strongest possible terms and described the killers as cowards who have murdered sleep.  

    “He condoles the families of the deceased and vows to get justice for the heroic act of the murdered Vigilantes Operative and unsuspecting members at the scene. 

    “He also called on members of the public especially the eyewitnesses to assist us with information on the ongoing onslaught Operation.”

    The incident happened Monday at Nnewi in the afternoon.

    However, it could not be ascertained whether they were trying to implement sit- at-home.

    The security man killed by the hoodlums identified as commander, was said to be in one of the Sienna vehicles donated by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

    The windscreen of the vehicle was shattered with many people rushed to one of the hospitals in Nnewi.

    Activist kidnapped in Edo by gunmen in DSS uniform

    A Benin, Edo State-based leading human rights activist, Omobude Agho, has been kidnapped by gunmen in the uniform of the Department of State Services (DSS).

    Agho, the Coordinator-General of Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSOs), was picked from his residence at Medical Stores axis of Benin in Egor Local Government Area of Edo at 2 a.m. yesterday (Friday).

    A member of the traumatised family of the frontline human rights activist, who spoke in confidence, disclosed that the gunmen stormed Agho’s house in four vehicles, laid siege, and took him away, without prior invitation.

    The family member noted that the condemnable strategy of the invaders made the activist’s neighbours and other residents of the densely-populated neighbourhood scamper to safety.

    EDOCSOs’ ex-Spokesman, Osazee Edigin, expressed surprise that the social critic was treated like the most dreaded bandit leader.

    Edigin suspected that the act might have been carried out by DSS operatives in Edo.
