    Gunmen kill two police officers, civilian in Imo ambush

    Tragedy struck in Akabo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State on Tuesday when gunmen killed two police officers and a civilian. 

    The incident occurred around 6 am, causing panic among residents and passersby.

    According to eyewitnesses, the policemen were on duty at the junction when the armed hoodlums attacked, fatally shooting them. 

    The police officers and other victims were seen covered in the pool of their blood. 

    The incident has sent shockwaves through the community with residents calling for increased security measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

    A resident, Ozuzu, revealed that the officers were consistently present at the junction as early as 6 am daily.

    “We always see them there on duty even  Sundays as early as 6 am,” he said. 

    Imo Police spokesman, Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident, describing it as “unfortunate.” 

    He stated that two officers were confirmed dead and the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has mobilised a tactical operation to the scene to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

    “Currently, a massive operation is underway in the area to ensure the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the heinous crime,” he said.

    Gunmen kill Enugu politician

    Gunmen have shot and killed a popular politician in Enugu State, Ejike Ukwueze.

    It was gathered that Ukwueze was reportedly killed on Friday night while driving in a local area, Neke Odenigbo, in Enugu East Local Government Area of the state.

    In a viral video, Ukwueze and his car were shot multiple times, with bullet holes visible in the vehicle.

    The victim was the immediate younger brother of the member who represented Isi-Uzo State Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, late Chijioke Ukwueze, who in 2020 slumped and died during a plenary session of the house.

    A source close to the family alleged that the family suspects the killing was politically motivated, suggesting it was an assassination as the victim was becoming influential in the Isi-Uzo Local Government Area political circle ahead of the October local government elections.

    “Yeah, I heard he was a strong contender. Aside from having the intention of running for the LG election, he was becoming a force in the Isi-Uzo political affairs, standing in for his dear late brother who was one of the most accepted and powerful political stakeholders in Isi-Uzo,” the source told newsmen.

    Meanwhile, the police authorities in Enugu State are yet to comment on the incident.

    Gunmen reportedly kill five in fresh Plateau attack

    Gunmen have killed five persons in Kimakpa village of Kwall district in Bassa local government of Plateau state. 

    The killing, according to national publicity secretary Irigwe Development Association ((IDA) Sam Jugo, took place on Monday 2nd June 2024 around 12 am. 

    Jugo said: “We woke up this morning to another sad one. In the middle of the night of 2nd June, 2024 criminal invaders attacked and killed 5 of our residents in cold blood at Kimakpa.

     “The criminal elements who came in their numbers with heavy weaponry killed a pastor of Assemblies of God church Kwall Pastor Dauda Dalyop.

    ”Also killed are Mrs Chummy Dauda, 57 years, Mr. Chwe Ajuhs, 26 years, Mr. Joshua Kusa, 45 years and Mrs Rikwe Doro 43 years old.

    “Two persons were severely injured and are currently undergoing treatment at home. Troops of Operation Safe Haven were instantly mobilized to avert further genocide. There’s uneasy calm in Kwall district as at Press Time. 

    “This sad incidence came just two days after some disgruntled elements ambushed some Rigwe youth on motorcycles while returning from Gero mining site and killed instantly Mr Irmiya Musa Timbi and severely injuring one other.

    “We use this medium to further appeal for calm to enable the security agencies carry out their investigations. We should upscale our vigilance, avoid night movements to distant destinations and suppress the urge for reprisal or taking the law in our hands and give the security agencies the benefit of the doubt. In as much as we are quite saddened by this condemnable incidence , we cannot afford to aggravate the situation by seeking self help at this time. 

    “We call on the security agencies to do the needful by fishing out the culprits so that the affected will see justice being served as that’s the only way to restore the confidence of our people”

    Spokesmen of the police and STF DSP. Alfred Alabo and Major Samson Khazom respectively didnt respond to call to confirm the incident..

    Gunmen attack police station in Ebonyi

    Gunmen yesterday attacked the Ohaukwu Police Division at Ezzamgbo in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area (LGA), burning vehicles.

    However, no casualties were recorded as policemen on duty stood firm and repealed the gunmen.

    A source said the gunmen, numbering eight, came in a bus and started shooting, causing panic in the neighbourhood.

    The attack also disrupted the distribution of palliatives by the Chairman of Ohaukwu LGA, Ikechukwu Odono, at the Council headquarters adjacent to the police station.

    “Everyone, including the Chairman of the Council, ran for their lives to avoid injuries from the gunshots,” the source said.

    Odono confirmed the attack to our reporter.

    He said no life was lost but the attackers burnt some vehicles at the police station.

    He further stated that the attack disrupted the distribution of the palliatives in the council headquarters as people ran for safety.

    Police spokesperson, Ukandu Joshua did not take calls or respond to messages when our reporter tried to get his reaction.

    Gunmen kidnap four passengers in Benue bus attack

    Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have attacked a passenger bus and kidnapped four passengers in the NorthBank area of Makurdi, the Benue State capital .

    The attack took place about 10 pm around the busy SRS Junction and J.S.Tarka University Road on Saturday night.

    An eye witness, James Igbudu, told The Nation that the herdsmen blocked the bridge before Alfred Akawe Torkula Polytechnic, Makurdi.

    “They shot at a passenger bus as well as a Honda car that coming from the same direction.

    Many passengers sustained injuries. He said the gunmen abducted one woman in the bus and three passengers in the Honda Accord car . However, the abducted woman in  the bus was later freed as the injuries from the attack prevented her from moving fast with the victims.

    The incident was reported to the police who rushed to the scene, but, before they arrived, the gunmen escaped with their victims.

    At press time, villagers who live around the scene of the incident and a vigilance group had launched a man hunt to rescue the victims.

    Gunmen kill two, kidnap one in Anambra community

    Gunmen on Sunday night killed two and abducted one at Okija community in Ihiala local government area of Anambra State.

    The incident, which occured around 9pm, created tension in the area. 

    One of those killed was the Secretary general of Okija Progressive Union, Peter Awa, a lawyer.

    The other was Izuchukwu Igwenagha, popularly known in the area as (Onwa)

    The third person, The Nation gathered, was whisked away by the gunmen, over what some people described as a land tussle.

    While Okija Secretary, who was also the Chancellor of the Knights of St Mulumba, Okija Sub Council, was killed in a market square in his Umudioka village, Izuchukwu Igwenagha was murdered in his Isieke village.

    However, the business man kidnapped at Nkwo Okija while he was driving home from a function, had not been identified. 

    The Nation further gathered, that before the invasion of gunmen in Okija on Sunday, the community was the most secured in Anambra because of its security architecture. 

    It was also learnt that neighbouring communities were coming to conduct burials and weddings in the town because of the security in place 

    The Okija Secretary was elected in 2023 during  a town union election conducted by the Anambra Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Town Union Matters.

    Only recently, The Nation, learnt, there was an attempt to kidnap his wife , also a lawyer, at Ihiala, which failed.

    It was further gathered that he attended a village meeting few hours before his murder.

    Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, was ‘not available’ when contacted on phone but one of the Senior Police officers in the state confirmed it.

    The source, who did not want to be mentioned, told The Nation that security operatives had already been deployed in the area.

    JUST IN: Gunmen kidnap Catholic priest in Anambra

    A renowned Catholic Priest, Rev. Father Basil Gbusuo, has been kidnapped in Anambra state by unknown gunmen.

    The Catholic priest, who lives in the Onitsha Diocese was said to have been kidnapped along Eke-Nkpor, Obosi, Idemili North local government area on Wednesday, May 15.

    A statement issued by the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha chapter confirmed the kidnap of the priest.

    The state police command confirmed the incident on Thursday, May 16, in a statement.

    When contacted, the police public relations officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, SP, confirmed the incident

    He said the command had mounted surveillance to track down the hoodlums.

    He stated: “Anambra Police Command has launched a manhunt for the abductors and possible rescue of Fr. Basil Chukwuemeka which sad incident occurred at Nkpor Junction, Onitsha.

    “The Command is already working with some eyewitnesses to the incident in the ongoing operation

    “Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, while addressing the Catholic priests allayed their fears and assured them that the Command would do everything to rescue the priest unhurt and arrest the abductors.”

    The statement by the church, said His Grace, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha, had called on all Christ’s faithful and people of goodwill to pray for the quick and safe release of the priest.

    The Archdiocese said it was also intensifying efforts to secure Fr. Gbuzuo’s freedom, while committing the priest to the “powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Priests, for his speedy release from the hands of his kidnappers.”

    The statement signed by the Chancellor of the diocese, Rev. Fr. Prudentius E. Aroh, read in part, “With sadness, we write to inform the general public of the kidnap of one of our priests, Rev. Fr. Basil Gbuzuo.

    “The sad incident occurred yesterday morning, Wednesday, 15th May, 2024, along Eke Nkpor-Obosi bypass at about 8 am.

    “He is a priest in residence at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, Ogidi. Until now, the abductors have not established any contact with anybody.

    “His Grace, Most Rev. Valerian M. Okeke, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha, invites all Christ’s faithful and all men and women of goodwill to earnestly pray for the quick and safe release of the priest as we intensify our efforts to ensure his freedom.

    “We commend our brother, Fr. Basil, to the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Priests, for his speedy release from the hands of his kidnappers.”

    JUST IN: Gunmen kill pregnant woman, eight others in Benue community

    Suspected armed herdsmen numbering over 15 have attacked Aliko community and killed nine persons, including a pregnant woman .

    The attack occurred on Sunday around 4pm in Usha Council Ward, Agatu Local Government area of Benue state.

    The chairman of Agatu Local Government area, Hon.Yakubu Ochepo, who confirmed the attack. 

    He told The Nation on phone that over 500 persons were displaced and many others wounded.

    “Seven corpses have been  recovered ,including a pregnant woman and others victims,” he said. 

    Ochepo called on the State and Federal Governments to provide security to the People of Agatu so that they can go back to their farming activities.

    Agatu,a town located in Benue South Senatorial District ,has been under sustained herdsmen  attacks since January 2024.

    Benue State Command Police said it was yet to get the report on the incident when contacted.

    Gunmen invade Edo community, burn cars, houses

    A group, who identified itself as “Ijaw Freedom Fighters”, has attacked Imariogha Community, near Okomu Oil Palm Plantation, setting ablaze over eight vehicles, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

    Investigation shows that the bandits invaded the community, formerly known as AT&P,   in Ovia South West Local Government Area.

    Commissioner of Police in Edo, Mr Funsho Adegboye, confirmed the attack to NAN in a telephone interview in Benin.”We are aware of the incident and have visited the community.

    We are already holding talks in partnership with sister security organisations and Okomu Oil Palm Company to arrest the situation,” he said.

    Meanwhile, an eye witness told NAN that the invaders entered the community from the Riverside on Sunday midnight shooting sporadically into the air and setting fire to about eight private vehicles and destruction of many houses.

     One of the community leaders, Mr Rex Akpokiniovo, told NAN that while one person was killed, a Chief of the community, Pa Gabriel Okorugbe, who sustained injuries from the attack had been hospitalised.

    “The body of the dead person has been taken away by the police.

     “My house was attacked and my car burnt down by the gunmen who came into the community at midnight and started shooting sporadically into the air.

    JUST IN: Gunmen kill two policemen in Enugu checkpoint attack

    Gunmen have killed two policemen in a checkpoint attack along Presidential road, Enugu

    The development came barely one week after two policemen and three vigilante operatives otherwise known as Neighbourhood Watch Group were killed in another attack by a gang of rampaging hoodlums in Igga community in Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu State.

    The latest incident, our correspondent gathered, occured around 9:30 pm on Friday when the officers serving in Ogui Division were conducting stop-and-search along Presidential Road, Enugu.

    According to the spokesman of the Enugu Police command, Daniel Ndukwe, the attackers were suspected to be the armed members of the IPOB/ESN who operated in three SUV jeeps. 

    Ndukwe stated the operatives returned fire, forcing the hoodlums to escape with varying degrees of gunshot wounds and abandoning a recovered Lexus RX 300 jeep with Reg. No. KTU 991 FD.

    But Governor Peter Mbah has placed a N10 million bounty on the killers, saying the State would go after the culprits with every resource at its disposal.

    Mbah pledged the reward while briefing newsmen after a State Security Council meeting at the Government House, Enugu on Saturday.

    The meeting attracted Commissioner of Police,  Kanayo Uzuegbu; Director, State Security Services, Theresa Egbunu; Garrison Commander, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Brigadier General Murtala Abu; and the State Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Peter Ogar, among others.

    On the possible culprits, Mbah said available security information pointed to men of the Eastern Security Network, ESN, who came in several SUVs, among them a black Lexus SUV. 

    He called on members of the public to be on the lookout for the criminals and the exhibits and report same to security agencies.
