  • Wife to husband: produce our son missing for seven years

    A woman, Mrs. Mojirayo Arokoyo, has told the Igando Customary Court in Lagos to compel her husband to disclose the whereabouts of their son, a medical student, who has been missing for seven years.

    Mojirayo, a 53-year-old caterer, made the appeal while giving evidence in a divorce suit filed by her husband, Mr. Michael Arokoyo, who is seeking the dissolution of their 33 years marriage.

    The petitioner wanted divorce on the grounds of lack of care.

    The mother of four, however, said it was her husband who distanced himself from the family, especially the children.

    She alleged that there was a time her husband called their second child to come and see him and since then he was yet to be found.

    Her words: “My husband called our son, who was studying medicine at the university to come and see him and up till today, he could not be found.

    “It is seven years now that the boy, who is supposed to be 29-year-old this year, disappeared.

    “Efforts by me to find him proved unsuccessful. Your lordship, please help me ask my husband what he did to my son.

    “He does not care about the welfare of our children.

    “He does not even know where the children are schooling nor does he pay their school fees. I pay the fees.”

    The respondent said she satisfied her husband in all ways.

    She implored the court not to grant her husband’s wish for the dissolution of their marriage “because I still love him.”

    Arokoyo had told the court that his wife, with whom he had four children, did not take care of him.

    “I live like a bachelor. I wash my clothes, cook for myself,” the man said.

    The 65-year-old petitioner said his wife was stubborn, adding that she assaulted him.

    “My wife is stubborn, she does not respect me. There was a day she slapped me. I beat her up and she fainted,” he said.

    The petitioner said Mojirayo goes out at will and comes back anytime she likes.

    “She can leave home and return after two weeks without letting me know her whereabouts,” he said.

    The husband said things were moving on fine for them until when he was no longer working.

    He said his wife suddenly became hostile.

    According to him, his wife had turned their children against him.

    He asked the court to dissolve the marriage, saying he no longer loved her.

    The Court President, Mr. Adegboyega Omilola, adjourned the case till September 26 for judgment.

    A Customary Court sitting in Ikole-Ekiti  in Ekiti, on Monday dissolved the 39-year-old marriage between Mrs Idowu Omolayo,50, and her estranged husband, Chief Olusola Omolayo,55.

    Mrs Idowu was a former regent of Ayebode –Ekiti in  Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti.

    The president of the court, Mrs Yemisi Ojo, in her judgment ordered that the couple should go their separate ways since there was no room for reconciliation as claimed by the petitioner.

    “The court has heard the evidence of both parties and finds that the parties have lived together for a very long period of time, such that a marriage can be reasonably presumed.

    “But since no dowry was paid, an allegation admitted by the respondent, the association can, however, be regarded as cohabitation.

    “The petitioner insists on dissolving whatever relationship she has with the respondent, refusing to consider reconciliation.

    “It is on this note that the court orders the parties to go their separate ways as they stand unmarried,” she said.

    Ojo said that the prayer by the petitioner for the custody of the third and fourth children, aged 20 years and 25 years respectively, was not granted.

    “No order as to the visitation rights of the children and consequently no order as to the financial cost maintenance of the children sought by the petitioner by reason of their being aged,” she said.

    She said that the parties must maintain peace henceforth, reminding them of their rights to appeal the decision of the court within 30 days.

    NAN also reports that the former regent had approached the court for an order for the dissolution of the marriage that was blessed with four children.

    The petitioner had sought the dissolution on grounds of alleged threat to her life; constant fighting between her and her husband, lack of proper care for her and the children, as well as drunkenness.

    She also accused her husband of abandoning the family for two and half years, her unsettled mind, public assault and non-payment of her dowry by her husband.

    Olusola who was the respondent in the case, however, denied the allegations and claimed that both of them jointly responsible for their children’s upbringing.

    He said that he was shouldering 65 per cent of the responsibilities.

    Olusola, who opposed the prayer of the petitioner for the dissolution, claimed that the last time he beat his wife was over 20 years ago.

    TRYING to cope with an emotionally and verbally abusive husband can be very difficult. Abusers create an unfair playing field so they can be in control. Tactics abusers use include intimidation, humiliation, coercion and isolation. Nearly one in seven American women have experienced this type of abuse by an intimate partner during the past 12 months, according to the 2010 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study “The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey.” While there is nothing you can do to make your husband stop being abusive, you can regain some control over your life to make it better.

    Step 1: Living with emotional and verbal abuse can take its toll on your health and general well-being. Take care of yourself and find healthy ways to deal with the stress of an abusive marriage. Eat healthy foods and try to get enough rest. Remind yourself of your unique qualities and talents. Indulge in a hobby or interest you enjoy. Try starting an exercise routine or reading a good book to escape for a while.

    Step 2: Keep your support system strong. Try to maintain your relationships with friends and family as much as you can. Your husband may try to limit the amount of time you spend with others or sabotage your friendships. Tell them what is going on so they will understand if they don’t hear from you.

    Step 3: Learn about the dynamics of abusive relationships. Knowing more about the pattern of abuse will help you understand that the abuse is not your fault but is something your husband chooses to do. Speak to a domestic violence advocate in your community or call the Domestic Violence Hotline

    Step 4: Set some boundaries with your husband. When he starts a verbal tirade, do not engage and try match his abuse. Psychologist Marie Hartwell-Walker’s article “Signs You Are Verbally Abused: Part II,” published on the Psych Central website, suggests calmly letting him know that you are sorry he feels that way, but that you expect him to treat you with respect. If he continues, simply walk out of the room and give him time to cool off.

    Step 5: Prepare a safety plan. In its post “What Is Safety Planning?” The National Domestic Violence Hotline stresses the importance of developing a practical, personalized plan to stay safe while in an abusive relationship, when leaving an abuser or after the relationship is over. Even if your husband has never been physically violent, verbal and emotional abuse can quickly escalate to physical abuse. Your plan should include identifying safe areas of your home and planning an escape route. You should keep a phone with you at all times and know who you can call for help. Create a code word or signal so trusted friends and neighbors know if you need emergency assistance.

    Tips: Keep your car filled with gas and back it into your driveway. Lock all doors except the driver’s in case you need to make a quick escape.

    Warnings

    Take extra precautions if you decide to leave your husband. Abuse can escalate when a victim tries to leave, or when the abuser fears you might. If you believe you are in immediate danger, call 911.

    A renowned female cleric, Evan. Christy Elendu, Friday said that the act of couple filing for divorce in the face of family challenges is devilish, adding that the only solution to marital problems is God.

    Elendu, Pastor of Woman Behold the Enmity, a.k.a., Heartbeat of God Ministries, spoke while hinting the press on a programme organised for couples, tagged: ‘My Home Shall not Break.’

    The cleric said God did not plan marriages to end in divorce, but stated that the world through devilish council has devised separation as the solution to marital problems.

    She said: “God spoke to me that the devil is after families and directed me to go and talk to families against divorce. His plan for family is peace understanding. Spouses should not see themselves at any point as enemies. The plan of God is for marriages to perceiver and last to the end.

    “What is happening now is that husbands and wife do not see themselves as one again. The enemy of marriage is devil he does not want marriages to stay that is why just small challenges spouses see divorce as the only option.

    “Families should seek the face of God and overcome their challenges and make their marriages work. I want to   urge couple who are in hard times to seek the face of God and avoid ending their divine relationship in divorce.
