  • Bread seller bags one year jail term for fake currency

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, sentenced a 27-year-old bread seller, Ifeanyi Osuohae, to one year in prison for possession of fake currency.

    The convict, who lives at No. 1, Lateef St., Orile-Agege in Lagos, was arraigned and tried for possessing fake currency.

    The magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, who gave the verdict, said the convict was found guilty of the charge.

    Fashola, however, gave the convict an option to pay N50, 000 as fine.

    Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Mike Unah, told the court that the accused had in his possession, N2, 000 counterfeit notes.

    He said that the accused committed the offence on June 11 about 1.30 a.m. at Akerele Street, Agege, a Lagos suburb.

    He told the court that the accused boarded a taxi and paid his fare with a fake N1,000 note and he was given N700 change.

    “The driver checked the fake N1,000 note and found out that it did not have CBN governor’s signature.

    “The accused started arguing with the driver and in the process, the driver quickly drove to the nearest police check point and alerted them.

    “The police found another fake N1,000 note on the accused after a thorough search,” he said.

    He told the court that the offence contravened Section 372 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

  • Man stabs, robs Uber driver of N1.4m Toyota car

    A 24-year-old man, Lucky Friday, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly robbing an Uber driver of his Toyota Corolla car valued at N1.4 million after stabbing him on the stomach.

    Friday, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery.

    Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi had told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large on March 16 at Ekingbon Estate in Lekki area of Lagos.

    He said the accused allegedly stabbed the complainant, Mr Godfrey Ovie, on the stomach with a dagger and robbed him of a Toyota Corolla car with registration no. FST 663 EZ valued at N1.4 million, property of the complainant, Alexander Abiola.

    The prosecutor said the accused was also armed with other dangerous weapons.

    “The complainant was attacked while driving the accused and his accomplices who had earlier boarded his car.

    “Suddenly the accused brought out a dagger and stabbed the complainant on the stomach and thereafter robbed him of the car.

    “He was arrested by some policemen from Ajah Police Division while trying to escape, while accomplices fled the scene in an unmarked motorcycle,” Emuerhi said.

    The offences contravened Sections 297 and 299 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat remanded the accused in prison and directed that the case file should be sent to the Lagos State
    Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.

    Sule-Amzat adjourned the case until Oct. 22.

  • Driver bolts with employer’s N5.4m valuables

    A 38-year-old driver, who allegedly stole from his employers’ cash and valuables worth N5.4 million, was
    on Friday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi told the court the accused committed the offences with others still at large on June 21 at Maryland,
    Ikeja.

    Emuerhi said the accused, who worked as a driver for the complainant, Mrs Ngozi Braide, allegedly stole gold jewellery and cash
    valued at N5.4 milion.

    He alleged that the accused was given the keys to the complainant’s house to grant access to the people who were coming to clean
    the house.

    “Braide gave Phillip the keys to her apartment so he could let the housekeepers have access to her apartment but when she got
    home, she noticed some of her property were missing.

    “The items stolen includes a 22 karat gold bangle, 22 karat chain, a set of diamond rings all valued at N3.6 million and 3,000 dollars
    (N1.8 million).

    “The accused, who had been working for the complainant for over three years, broke into her room and made away with the items.

    “He was, however, apprehended by the police,” Emuerhi said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 (&) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Section 287 (7) stipulates seven years jail term for offenders, while Section 411 provides
    two years.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    In her ruling, Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat granted the accused bail of N250, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

    Sule-Amzat said one of the sureties should be a blood relation of the accused and must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two
    years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until Oct. 25 for trial.

  • Clearing agent docked for absconding with customer’s N2.6m

    A 51-year-old clearing agent, Hyginus Onwujialiru, was on Monday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly defrauding a customer of  N2.6million.

    Onwujialiru, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Peter Nwangwu, told the court that the accused committed the offences between March 9 and April 6 at No. 14 Jasper Ike St., Lekki, Lagos.

    He said the accused defrauded the complainant, Mr Obed Aika, as he failed to clear the four cars he was paid to clear from Apapa Ports.

    “The money was paid into the accused account by the complainant to clear the cars.

    “He absconded with the money until he was apprehended by the police,’’ he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 stipulates a15-year imprisonment for obtaining under false pretences, while Section 287 provides a seven-year jail term for stealing.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Aje-Afunwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N600, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Aje-Afunwa adjourned the case until July 4 for mention.

  • Driver docked over theft of truck worth N4m

    A 57-year-old truck driver, Bayo Adeleke, on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing an Iveco truck valued at N4 million.

    Adeleke, who resides at No. 2, Daniel Gaby St., Oluwo, Agbado, Lagos, is facing a five-count charge of stealing, false pretence, conspiracy, fraud and damage.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Innocent Odugbo, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 24 at No. 1, Jide Agbe Close, Alagbado, a suburb of Lagos.

    He said that the accused stole an Iveco truck with registration number FST 113 XT, belonging to Mr Jide Agbe.

    Odugbo said that the accused fraudulently collected the complainant’s truck on the pretext that he wanted to use it for commercial activities with an agreement to remit N750,000 from the proceeds.

    “Agbe gave Adeleke the truck, who absconded with it.

    “Later, he came back to the complainant saying the truck engine valued at N250,000 had been damaged.

    “The case was reported at the Police station and he was apprehended,’’ the prosecutor said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 411, 339, 323 and 314 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

    Adeleke, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs S.K. Matepo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N750, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Matepo said the sureties should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions.

    She said that the sureties must swear to an affidavit of means; reside within the court’s jurisdiction and their addresses should be verified.

    Matepo said that one of the sureties must present two recent passport photographs.

    She adjourned the case until June 18, for mention.

  • Man arraigned for allegedly stealing

    An unemployed, Olumide Kolawole, who allegedly stole two phones valued at N379,000 at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport, on Tuesday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Kolawole, 41, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge bordering on stealing.

    The prosecution alleged that the accused stole an iPhone valued at N325, 000 and an Infinix phone valued at N54, 000, property of the complainant, Mr Samuel Orimoloye.

    According to the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Vincent Atagamen, the accused committed the offences on March 31 at the Departure Hall of the airport.

    Atagamen said the accused, who was said to have unlawfully gained entry into the Departure Hall which is a restricted area, stole the two phones which the complainant forgot in the toilet.

    “The complainant escorted his mother to the airport and forgot his phones after using the toilet.

    “The accused stole the phones and took it to Computer Village for sale.

    “”The accused was caught after he was unable to unlock the iPhone. The buyer suspected that the phones must have been stolen and alerted the police,” Atagamen said.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. (Revised)

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates three years imprisonment for offenders.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Kubeinje said the surety should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case until June 16.

  • Landlord’s children beat up couple over unpaid rent

    Two siblings, Isiaka Olaleye and Olaide Olaleye were on Thursday in Lagos hauled up before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating up a couple over house rent.

    The accused were arraigned before the Magistrate, Mrs F.F. George, on a three-count charge of breach of peace, conspiracy and assault.

    Isiaka, 43, a businessman, and Olaide, 35, female fashion designer, however, pleaded not guilty and were admitted to a bail of N50,000 each with one surety each in like sum.

    George said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Police Prosecutor Godwin Awase had told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 6 at Onipanu area of Lagos.

    He said the accused and others still at large conspired to assault Mr Sheu Adeniran and his wife, Asiatu, by beating them for owing rent.

    “The accused, who are landlord’s children, conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by hiring thugs to beat up the complainants.”

     According to Awase, the accused unlawfully entered the complainants’ apartment with the thugs and started throwing out their property.

    `The accused were parking out the complainants’ property from the apartment and the complainants were trying to stop them which resulted into serious beating.

    “The complainants reported the case at the police station and the accused were arrested while others escaped,” the prosecutor said.

    The offences contravened Sections 168, 171 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 172 stipulates one year imprisonment for assault, while Section 411 prescribes two years for conspiracy.

    The case was adjourned until May 23 for mention.

    Men docked for bolting with friend ’s N130,000

    Oyebamiji Sarafa, 39, and Ibrahim Mustapha, 51, who allegedly conspired to steal N130,000 from their friend, Shola Adebayo while sleeping in his hotel room, were on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The defendants, who are both residents of Ogba area of Lagos State, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Raji Akeem, told the court that the accused persons committed the offences on Dec. 19, 2017 at a hotel situated at Agoshasha Street, Alakuko in Ikeja.

    Akeem alleged that the accused conspired to steal N130,000 belonging to their friend, Adebayo.

    He claimed that the complainant won N130,000 from a lotto game he played and decided to invite two of his friends for celebration in a hotel.

    The prosecutor said that the complainant who had no idea that his friends were planning to steal the money from him, carelessly put the money in a drawer at his hotel room.

    Akeem explained that when Adebayo noticed it was already late, he told his friends to keep the night with him in the hotel and go home the following day.

    The prosecutor alleged that by the time the complainant woke up the following day, his friends had absconded with his money.

    Akeem explained that Adebayo reported the case to the police and the accused were apprehended and taken to the police station for questioning.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three years’ imprisonment for stealing while Section 411 stipulates two-year jail term for conspiracy, if found guilty.

    Senior Magistrate T.O. Shomade granted the accused N100, 000 bail each with one surety each in like amount.

    He adjourned the case until Feb. 5 for mention.

    Three women in court over theft of lace materials worth N10.2m

    A 55-year-old businesswoman, Kuburat Sheu,  and two others, were on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged stealing of lace materials valued at N10.2 million.

    Others facing trial along with the businesswoman are Husseini Isiaka, 32 and Mutairu Abdullahi, 27, both sales representatives.

    They are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and receiving stolen goods.

    The prosecutor, Peter Nwangwu, told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large on November 13, 2017 at No.11, Ereko St., Idumota, Lagos.

    Nwangwu said that the sales representatives, who worked for Alhaja Remi Bakinson, stole three hundred bundles of assorted lace materials from the complainant’s warehouse.

    “The sales representatives later sold 80 bundles of the materials to Sheu at N2.7million,’’ he said.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened Sections 287, 328 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Section 287 stipulates three years jail term for the offenders.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs Aje Afunwa, granted the trio bail of N900, 000 each with two responsible sureties in like sum.

    Afunwa said that one of the sureties should be a blood relation of the accused.

    She said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case until March 19 for mention.
