  • Driver in court for stabbing NURTW official

    A commercial bus driver Ariyo Lukman, was on Thursday docked before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly beating and stabbing a man, Sunday Olaopa with a knife on the hand.

    Lukman, who resides in Agege area of Lagos, is facing a charge of assault.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Raji Akeem, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 16 at Iju Ishaga Roundabout, Lagos.

    He said that the accused assaulted Olaopa and used a knife to stab him on the hand.

    The prosecutor said that the complainant, an official of the National Union of Road and Transport Workers (NURTW), said he was performing his duty when the accused assaulted him.

    Akeem said that Lukman attacked the complainant because he told him not to park on the road.

    “The complainant said the accused got angry and stormed out of his vehicle because he told him to park at the bus stop.

    “The accused took a knife from a boy selling orange by the roadside and used it to stab Olaopa on the hand, “the prosecutor said.

    He said the offence contravened section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.‎

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 171 prescribes three years imprisonment for assault occasioning harm, if found guilty.

    The accused, however, denied the allegation levied against him.

    The Magistrate, Mr T.O. Shomade, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned further hearing in the case till March 13.

     

  • Pastor arraigned for alleged threat to set church ablaze

    A 56-year-old pastor, Jones Nwaeze, was on Friday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ court in Lagos for allegedly chasing worshippers with sticks and threatening to burn down his church.

    Nwaeze, a resident of Oba Akinjobi Road, Ikeja, Lagos, is being tried for breach of peace and assault before Magistrate Mrs. Y.O. Ekogbule.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, said the accused committed the offences on Feb. 12 at No. 95, Tina St., Ojodu, Lagos.

    He said that the accused, a pastor of Minister of Gospel of God Church, conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by chasing away other worshipers with stick and fuel.

    The prosecutor said the accused invaded the church during Saturday morning prayers, disrupted the service and assaulted some of the worshipers.

    He said that the security man attempted to prevent the accused from gaining access into the church premises because it was not the first time he (accused) was disrupting church service.

    “He (pastor) hit the security man with a stick on the head, dragged him on the ground and the security man sustained injuries.

    “One of the worshippers alerted the police who rushed to the scene,” the prosecutor said.

    Okuoimose said the accused claimed ownership of the church saying had invested heavily on it by bringing coverts and he needed his share.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Section 171 states that if found guilty, the accused will serve three years jail term.

    The accused however pleaded not guilty to the offences leveled against him.

    The Magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N20, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till March 13 for mention.

     

  • Woman in court for slapping employer’s mother

    A 32-year-old female employee, Sarah Oboh, who allegedly slapped and tore the clothes of her employer’s mother was on Friday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Oboh, a resident of Surulere area of Lagos State, is being tried for breach of peace, damage and assault.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offences on Feb.1 at Bolaji Street, Ikeja, Lagos.

    He said that the accused assaulted Mrs Olubunmi Jeyibo, by slapping her and tearing her clothes.

    “The accused gave the complainant a slap and she also tore her clothes valued at N25, 000,” he said.

    He said that the complainant was assaulted when she went to her late son’s company to check the well-being of staff and discuss with the accused who was managing the company.

    “She went to her son’s company to have discussion with the accused who is in charge after the demise of her son.

    “During the discussion, an argument ensued and the accused slapped the complainant on her right cheek.

    “She went further by tearing her clothes,” he said.

    The offences contravened sections 166, 170 and 348 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 170 prescribes a year imprisonment as penalty for assault.

    The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N20, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O Ekogbule, adjourned the case to March 1, for mention.

  • Civil servant faces N2.5m fraud charge in Lagos

    A civil servant, Ogunlolu Kolawole, who allegedly defrauded Adeoso Ademola of N2.5 million, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Kolawole, 45, who resides at No. 22, Salvation Ave., Ikotun, a Lagos suburb, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Peter Nwangwu, told the court that the accused committed the offences in Dec. 2015 in Ikotun area of Lagos State.

    Nwangwu said that the accused collected the money from the complainant under the pretext of helping him to purchase a Honda 2009 model car from Cotonou, Republic of Benin.

    “The accused failed to purchase the car, and instead converted the money to his personal use,’’ he said.

    Nwangwu alleged that the accused refused to pick his calls, until he was trailed and apprehended by the police.

    The offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term for offender if found guilty.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O Aje-Afumwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N700, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Aje-Afumwa adjourned the case to March 15 for mention.

    Movie producer Seun Egbegbe arrested for alleged fraud

    Less than two months after he was almost lynched at Computer Village, Ikeja for allegedly stealing Iphones, filmmaker, Seun Egbegbe Thursday landed in another trouble.

    He was arrested by policemen from the Area H command for allegedly defrauding some Bureau De Change (BDC) operators of about N10 million at Gbagada.

    Egbegbe was remanded in prison custody by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on a count charge of stealing, under Section 278 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The producer who was later granted bail of one million Naira, with two responsible sureties in like sum, traveled abroad last month and returned recently.

    With his previous trial adjourned to February 18, Egbegbe, it was gathered went to Gbagada with some of his friends under the guise that he wanted to change some dollars.

    Witnesses who took to social media to share information on the incident claimed the producer lied that he was a medical doctor at Gbagada General Hospital, asking the BDC operator to come there for his money later.

    But when he was unable to provide an identity card to support his claim, the operator was said to have raised an alarm, attracting others who had him beaten before handing him over to the police.

    Efforts to get comments from the spokesperson for the state command, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP) failed at the time of filing this report.

     

  • 10 arraigned for ‘publishing’ unlicensed Biafra Times

    The police Monday arraigned 10 persons at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly publishing inciting news.

    They were accused of publishing an unlicensed newspaper called The Biafra Times.

    Police prosecutor, Effiong Asuquo, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), said the accused persons “projected obscene article in an unlicensed publication” known as The Biafra Times on January 29.

    The publication, the prosecution said, contain pictorial displays of persons living and dead in a manner likely to provoke or cause disaffection among some Nigerians.

    The accused were also alleged to have conducted themselves in a manner likely to constitute a breach of peace, by inducing fear in the public to abstain from going about their lawful businesses.

    The police said the alleged offences contravened Section 58, 59 and 403 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Cap C17 Laws of the Federation, 2015.

    The accused are: Peter Eke, Jamiu Eke, Azeez Ayoola, Akeem Adebakin, Bisi Akeem, Adewumi Temitope, Sakiru Folorunsho, Rafiu Qudus, Kunle Olusola, and Ayodeji Odunyingbo.

    They were arraigned before Chief Magistrate, Aje Afunwa and pleaded not guilty to the seven count charges preferred against them by the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID).

    Their lawyer, Lucy Baadoo moved an application for their bail, praying the court to grant them temporary freedom on liberal terms.

    The magistrate, however, refused the application after Asuquo raised objections.

    The magistrate instead ordered accelerated hearing of the case.

    Asuquo, Officer-in-Charge of Legal Department, SCIID, Panti Yaba, alleged the defendants reproduced statements, rumors and reports calculated at inciting the secession of a section of the Nigerian Federation.

    Trial will begin on February 10 and continue on February 17 and 24.

    Police arraign auditor for assault

    The police on Tuesday arraigned a 36-year-old auditor, Omobolaji Ipadeola, in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court f0r allegedly assaulting and tearing the uniform of a policeman.

    Ipadeola, a resident of Command Road, Ipaja, Lagos, is standing trial for alleged breach of peace and assault.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 3 at Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.

    Nwosu said that Ipadeola unlawfully assaulted a police sergeant on duty by hitting him and tearing his uniform.

    He said that a team of police officers were on patrol and stopped the accused who was driving his Honda Accord car, but he refused to stop.

    “The accused refused to stop initially but was intercepted in traffic, he was then asked to produce his vehicle document but he refused.

    “The police team leader instructed the complainant to take the accused to the station for questioning following his refusal to comply with their directive.

    “But the accused refused to go to the station and started fighting with the complainant and in the process tore part of his uniform,” he said.
    The offences contravened sections 166 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 172 provides for four-year imprisonment for the offence.

    Ipadeola pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mr A.A Adesanya, adjourned the case till Oct. 26 for mention.

    Police arraign 10 men for rioting

    The police on Tuesday arraigned 10 men in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for rioting, assaulting and damaging people’s property,

    The accused persons were; Umar Zakari, 18; Babagida Malami, 20; Babagida Sani, 22; Salisu Auta, 33; Aminu Nuhu, 32; Ezekiel Yahaya, 29;  Bala Yau, 30; Mohammed Bello, 45; Shefiu Halidu, 22; and Aji Rabiu, 29.

    The accused are being tried for breach of peace, conspiracy, rioting assembly, damage and assault.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unah, told the court that they committed the offences on Sept. 6 and Sept. 7 at Abattoir Animal Market, Agege.

    He said that they conspired to riot, disturb the peace and damaged property of the residents of the area.

    “The accused persons conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause fear by attacking the innocent residents of the area with dangerous weapons,” he said.

    Unah said that there was a disagreement between the two factions of the accused over demolition of some structures which resulted into a fight.

    “The two factions had an argument which degenerated into a fight, and they stormed the area with cutlasses, knives, sticks, iron rods and other dangerous weapons,” he said.

    The prosecutor also told the court that the accused damaged several vehicles and used the avenue to rob people of their belonging.

    Prosecution said the offences contravened sections 50, 166, 348 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, which on conviction attracts between three and seven years jail term for offenders.

    The accused persons pleaded innocence of the offences and were granted bail each in the sum of N50, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O A. Gbajumo adjourned the case till Oct. 10 for mention.

    Driver in court for allegedly biting Policeman

    A commercial bus driver, Monday Asien, who allegedly bit a police officer on official duty, on Friday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Asien, 45, a resident of Makinde Street, Alausa, Ikeja in Lagos State, is facing a two-count charge of threats to life and assault.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 30, at 8.00p.m., at his residence.

    He said the accused assaulted and prevented some police officers from carrying out their lawful duties.

    “The officers were in the accused residence following a complaint by one Adanma Anachuma, his neighbour, over an alleged violent act and threat to life.

    “When the accused sighted the police officers, he took to his heels, but was caught.

    “Asien, while trying to escape, punched and bite one Sgt. Godspower Okoro, on the hand causing him bodily harm and also tore the uniform of Cpl. Tajudeen Alimi.

    “The accused was finally overpowered and brought to the station where he continued fighting, until he was locked up,’’ Egunjobi said.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 56 and 172 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The chief magistrate, Mrs M.O. Oshinbajo, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N20, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Oshinbajo ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and showed evidence of payment of tax to the Lagos State Government (LASG).

    The magistrate adjourned the case to Aug. 24 for mention.

    Man in court for allegedly raping church member

    A 31- year-old man, Damilare Balogun, was on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raping `a church sister’ (names withheld).

    The accused, a website designer, who lives at Plot 426, Damilola Folashade Street., Omole Phase 1, Ojodu, a Lagos suburb, is being tried for sexual assault.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that the offence was committed on July 24 at the accused residence.

    Aigbokhan said that the accused invited the victim, a 25-year-old lady to his house.

    “The accused and the victim are church members, and also belong to the same service unit in the church.

    “When the victim got to his house, he shut the door at her and forcefully made love to her,” he said.

    The offence contravened Section 259 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Olanipekun granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    She adjourned the case till Sept. 19 for mention.
